The look gives a subtle nod to "the Rachel" haircut she wore on Friends in the '90s

Jennifer Aniston is giving "the Rachel" an upgrade!

On Monday, Sept. 8, The Morning Show actress, 56, was spotted in New York City with a new haircut just in time for fall. Aniston's highlighted brunette hair appeared to feature several layers and slightly curled ends, recalling her Friends character Rachel Green's most icon look: "the Rachel."

Aniston paired her fresh cut with an equally sexy outfit that consisted of a black satin midi dress and a fitted black blazer, which she accessorized with orange-tinted aviator sunglasses and the Aupen Nova bag in black.

"The Rachel" haircut, created by celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan, references the shoulder-grazing style with multiple face-framing layers that Aniston wore in the '90s while playing Rachel Green on the hit sitcom Friends.

The hairstyle would go on to become a global phenomenon during the show's run, and saw fans of the program flocking to their nearest hair salons with the hopes of recreating the popular look.

While Aniston's latest haircut contains some of the magic of the original Rachel, the actress likely won't be doing an exact copy of the '90s version of the look anytime soon.

In a 2011 interview with Allure, Aniston called McMillan — despite their working relationship dating back decades — "the bane of my existence because he started that damn Rachel, which was not my best look ... How do I say this? I think it was the ugliest haircut I've ever seen."

Two years later, Aniston told Marie Claire that " 'The Rachel' was ... horrible and ... high maintenance." Part of the actress' disdain for the hairstyle stemmed from it requiring "three brushes" to complete. She also added that sitting in the chair for the haircut was "like doing surgery. I'd curse Chris every time I had to blow-dry."

McMillan also told Marie Clare that he knew that "the Rachel" was "Jen's least favorite hairstyle" because "I hear about it every time I style her hair."

In the time since, Aniston has launched LolaVie, her own line of haircare products. The line launched in 2021 with the Glossing Detangler as its first product.

"As a creative, I love that this is just a different version of creating. The development phase is probably my favorite. It's sort of like why I love the designing of a house: the process of exploring and experimenting and getting it right," she said in an Aug. 5 interview with PEOPLE, following the launch of the brand's Powder Perfect Dry Shampoo.

"Knowing that you can actually get to a result that you want, it just takes a little time, has been really, really wonderful and fun," Aniston added.
