SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenburg Space Force Base in California Sunday night, creating a brilliant show high above the clouds.

The rocket launched 28 new Starlink internet satellites in low Earth orbit and after takeoff at 7:04 p.m. PDT (10:04 p.m. EDT), people across southern California and Arizona captured beautiful video and photos of the rocket's vapor trail across the sunset and darkening sky.

This was the 16th launch for SpaceX this month. The company now has more than 8,500 active Starlink satellites above our planet.

So what creates those dazzling vapor trails? Weather.com meteorologist Jennifer Gray explains, "Rocket engines produce very hot exhaust gases that contain quite a bit of water vapor, along with other gases and particles. When this hot exhaust mixes with the extremely cold air in the upper atmosphere - the temperature of the gases drops quickly - which causes the water vapor to condense and freeze, creating a visible white trail of ice crystals!"
