Gorilla Mom Reveals Her Baby to Zoo Visitors in an Incredibly Precious Moment

Gorillas never cease to amaze me. When you see something all the time, you might think it gets less cool, but I watch every single video I come across of gorillas, and I have never gotten tired of them. They are and will always be some of my favorite animals on the planet.
Recently, a bunch of zoo visitors got to see something very special: a mama gorilla decided to take her newborn baby out into the enclosure! Typically, they stay inside for a while, but she could not possibly wait any longer to show her baby off:
Sherpa Chai was on a trip to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington, when they were blessed by an angel and got to see this. I am definitely feeling very jealous, especially since it was so funny! It was like she brought him out and then immediately went, “Alright, don’t get greedy, you saw him!”
Woodland Park Zoo welcomed two gorilla babies back in May of this year, so these babies aren’t quite newborns like the video caption says. However, they are super cool, and when babies are this little, it’s rare that a mama will show them off so openly!

The two mamas are Jamani and Olympia, who gave birth just days apart. Olympia actually had a C-section, which is exceedingly rare for gorillas, but luckily, she and her baby (Kadre) are doing great! Kadre adores playing with Jamani’s baby, Oku:
Woodland Park Zoo seems like a fantastic place to grow up. If you happen to be there on one of the days Olympia or Jamani decide to show off their babies, say hi for me and know that I am so jealous!
How Long Before Zoos Put Babies ‘On Display?’
Zoos almost always wait a period after an animal gives birth before letting the mother and child back into the public-facing exhibit. It’s not just because of the people, either: they want to make sure the other animals will get along with them, too!

How long a zoo keeps a mother-child pair off display depends on a few factors, like:
Species: some may need longer alone with their young than others.
Attitude: they wait until they’re ready.
Complications: animals who had more complex/traumatic births need longer to recover.
It’s usually at least a few weeks, though it can be longer. Plus, mamas do not have to take their babies out! If Olympia and Jamani want to hide inside with their babies all the time, they can… Luckily, on this day, they weren’t feeling like doing that!
