Parents of a 10-year-old child are accused of leaving their son behind at the airport so they could catch a flight.

According to Spain's national police, Guardia Civil, the incident took place a few days ago at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport.

Guardia Civil's Catalonia office told USA TODAY the boy wasn't able to board the flight because of issues with his documentation, so his parents decided to leave him unaccompanied while they boarded with their younger child.

At first, airport staff alerted Catalonia police, Mossos d'Esquadra, because the incident happened in a public area of the airport, where they have jurisdiction. They, in turn, alerted Guardia Civil, which has jurisdiction over restricted parts of the airport.

Guardia Civil temporarily stopped the flight, found the family members on the plane and escorted them to a Mossos d'Esquadra station, where the child had been taken in the meantime for safety.

Mossos d'Esquadra said the child was handed over to the parents, who were being reported for child abandonment.

This incident first caught global attention after an apparent airport worker recounted what happened on TikTok.

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to bow to a sanctions ultimatum expiring this Friday from U.S. President Donald Trump, and retains the goal of capturing four regions of Ukraine in their entirety, sources close to the Kremlin told Reuters.

Trump has threatened to hit Russia with new sanctions and impose 100% tariffs on countries that buy its oil - of which the biggest are China and India - unless Putin agrees to a ceasefire in Russia's war in Ukraine.

Putin's determination to keep going is prompted by his belief that Russia is winning and by scepticism that yet more U.S. sanctions will have much of an impact after successive waves of economic penalties during 3-1/2 years of war, according to three sources familiar with discussions in the Kremlin.

The Russian leader does not want to anger Trump, and he realises that he may be spurning a chance to improve relations with Washington and the West, but his war goals take precedence, two of the sources said.

Putin's goal is to fully capture the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, which Russia has claimed as its own, and then to talk about a peace agreement, one of the sources said.

"If Putin were able to fully occupy those four regions which he has claimed for Russia he could claim that his war in Ukraine had reached his objectives," said James Rodgers, author of the forthcoming book "The Return of Russia".

The current talks process, in which Russian and Ukrainian negotiators have met three times since May, was an attempt by Moscow to convince Trump that Putin was not rejecting peace, the first source said, adding that the talks were devoid of real substance apart from discussions on humanitarian exchanges.

Russia says it is serious about agreeing a long-term peace in the negotiations but that the process is complicated because the two sides' stances are so far apart. Putin last week described the talks as positive.

Moscow's stated demands include a full Ukrainian withdrawal from the four regions and acceptance by Kyiv of neutral status and limits on the size of its military – demands rejected by Ukraine.

In a sign that there may yet be an opportunity to strike a deal before the deadline, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to visit Russia this week, following an escalation in rhetoric between Trump and Moscow over risks of nuclear war. On Monday, Russia said it was no longer bound by a moratorium on short- and medium-range nuclear missiles.

The Kremlin did not respond to a request for comment for this story. All the sources spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Trump, who in the past has praised Putin and held out the prospect of lucrative business deals between their two countries, has lately expressed growing impatience with the Russian president. He has complained about what he called Putin's "bullshit" and described Russia's relentless bombing of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities as "disgusting".

The Kremlin has said it noted Trump's statements but it has declined to respond to them.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko last week called on the world to respond with "maximum pressure" after the worst Russian air strike of the year killed 31 people in Kyiv, including five children, in what she called Russia's response to Trump's deadline.

"President Trump wants to stop the killing, which is why he is selling American-made weapons to NATO members and threatening Putin with biting tariffs and sanctions if he does not agree to a ceasefire," White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said in response to a request for comment.

The first source said Putin was privately concerned about the recent deterioration of U.S. ties. Putin still retains the hope that Russia can again befriend America and trade with the West, and "he is worried" about Trump's irritation, this person said.

But with Moscow's forces advancing on the battlefield and Ukraine under heavy military pressure, Putin does not believe now is the time to end the war, the source said, adding that neither the Russian people nor the army would understand if he stops now.

Rodgers, the author, said Putin has invested his political reputation and legacy in the war in Ukraine.

"We know from his previous writings and statements that he sees himself as part of a strong tradition of standing up to the West and the rest of world to defend Russia's interests," he said.

The Kremlin leader values the relationship with Trump and does not want to anger him, however, "he simply has a top priority - Putin cannot afford to end the war just because Trump wants it," the second Russian source said.

A third person familiar with Kremlin thinking also said Russia wanted to take all four regions and did not see the logic in stopping at a time of battlefield gains during Russia's summer offensive.

Ukraine has suffered some of its biggest territorial losses of 2025 in the past three months, including 502 square kilometres in July, according to Black Bird Group, a Finland-based military analysis centre. In total, Russia has occupied around a fifth of Ukraine.

Russia's military General Staff has told Putin that the Ukrainian front will crumble in two or three months, the first person said.

However, Russia's recent gains remain relatively minor in purely territorial terms, with only 5,000 square kilometres (1,930 square miles) of Ukraine taken since the start of last year, less than 1% of the country's overall territory, according to a June report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank.

Ukrainian and Western military sources, acknowledge that Russia is making gains, but only gradually and with heavy casualties. Russian war bloggers say Moscow's forces have been bogged down during its current summer offensive in areas where the terrain and dense urban landscape favoured Ukraine, but assess that other areas should be faster to take.

'HE'S MADE THREATS BEFORE'

Trump's sanctions threat was "painful and unpleasant," but not a catastrophe, the second source said. The third source said there was a feeling in Moscow that "there's not much more that they can do to us".

It was also not clear if Trump would follow through on his ultimatum, this person said, adding that "he's made threats before" and then not acted, or changed his mind.

The source also said it was hard to imagine that China would stop buying Russian oil on instructions from Trump, and that his actions risked backfiring by driving oil prices higher.

As a consequence of previous rounds of sanctions, Russian oil and gas exporters have taken big hits to their revenues, and foreign direct investment in the country fell by 63% last year, according to U.N. trade data. Around $300 billion of central bank assets have been frozen in foreign jurisdictions.

But Russia's ability to wage war has been unimpeded, thanks in part to ammunition supplies from North Korea and imports from China of dual-use components that have sustained a massive rise in weapons production. The Kremlin has repeatedly said that Russia has some "immunity" to sanctions.

Trump has acknowledged Russia's skill in skirting the measures. "They're wily characters and they're pretty good at avoiding sanctions, so we'll see what happens," he told reporters at the weekend, when asked what his response would be if Russia did not agree to a ceasefire.

The first Russian source noted that Putin, in pursuing the conflict, was turning his back on a U.S. offer made in March that Washington, in return for his agreement to a full ceasefire, would remove U.S. sanctions, recognise Russian possession of Crimea - annexed from Ukraine in 2014 - and acknowledge de facto Russian control of the territory captured by its forces since 2022.

The source called the offer a "fantastic chance," but said stopping a war was much more difficult than starting it.

Jeanine Santucci and Doyle Rice, USA TODAY August 5, 2025 at 8:15 PM

As Tropical Storm Dexter moves further out into the Atlantic Ocean and away from any potential risk to land, hurricane forecasters have their eyes on two other disturbances brewing in early August.

Dexter, which formed over the weekend, was weakening on Aug. 5 as it battled shearing winds on its path northeastward away from the U.S. coast, according to the National Hurricane Center. As of midday, it was positioned about 400 miles north of Bermuda, putting it over 600 miles off the East Coast. There were no coastal watches or warnings for weather impacts from the tropical storm.

Forecasters say Dexter should keep going at its current rate of about 12 mph with little change over the next couple days, but could re-intensify as a post-tropical cyclone later in the week.

Meanwhile, two more areas of possible concern include a disturbance off the Southeast coast of the United States with a 40% chance of formation over the next week, the hurricane center said. That broad area of low pressure could develop several hundred miles off the coast and might spell rainfall for beachgoers.

The other, a tropical wave producing showers over the far eastern tropical Atlantic recently moved off the coast of Africa and has a 50% chance of becoming a cyclone; forecasters said it could become a tropical depression later in the week.

Dexter was the fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, putting it on par with an average hurricane season, which usually has a fourth named storm by Aug. 3, according to Philip Klotzbach, a senior research scientist at Colorado State University. The average date of the first hurricane in the Atlantic is Aug. 15.

If the other two disturbances form into named storms, they would be called Erin and Fernand.

"We are now moving into a more active period (of the) Atlantic hurricane season," Weather Trader meteorologist Ryan Maue told USA TODAY on Aug. 4.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1 and will last through the end of November. Active hurricane weather typically peaks between mid-August and mid-October.

See the current storms brewingHow do hurricanes form?

Hurricanes are born in the tropics, above warm water. Clusters of thunderstorms can develop over the ocean when water temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If conditions are right, the clusters swirl into a storm known as a tropical wave or tropical depression.

A tropical depression becomes a tropical storm once its sustained wind speeds reach 39 miles per hour. When its winds reach 74 mph, the storm officially becomes a hurricane.

Teddy Bridgewater will not coach high school football this coming season. Instead, the veteran quarterback is signing a contract to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tampa general manager Jason Licht said the veteran Bridgewater is being brought in to help Baker Mayfield.

The 32-year-old Bridgewater led the Miami Northwestern Bulls to the Florida Class 3A state championship last season and then unretired to join the Detroit Lions. He served as Jared Goff's backup and did not appear in a regular-season game.

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

Last month, Bridgewater was suspended from Miami Northwestern after providing impermissible benefits to his players.

The suspension stemmed from a post Bridgewater put on Facebook on July 7 where he revealed he covered Uber rides, meals and recovery services for his players last season. He asked fans to donate and cover those expenses this year so they wouldn't have to come directly from his pocket.

That drew the attention of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA). An official with the FHSAA, Kelvin Richardson, told Rivals those allegations were sent to Miami Northwestern and that the FHSAA is working to gain more information.

Despite the ban, Bridgewater said he was not going anywhere and would "volunteer from the bleachers" like he'd done in the past.

There are a number of connections in the Bucs organization with Bridgewater. Tampa's defensive line coordinator, Charlie Strong, was his head coach at Louisville. He was also high school teammates with linebacker Lavonte David and worked with Josh Grizzard, the team's offensive coordinator, while he was with the Miami Dolphins.

It's also not the first time the Bucs had interest in Bridgewater. Licht said on Tuesday that Bridgewater was their Plan B had they not ended up signing in Tom Brady in 2020.

"We had him in here in 2014 before the draft, there might've been a situation where we would've taken him if he had fell a little further," Licht said. "And, you know, a few years ago, he was what was behind door No. 2. So, we talked about that today on the sideline. We ended up with Tom Brady, but now we have Teddy on the roster.

Bridgewater played nine NFL seasons with six teams before retiring after 2023 season, which he spent with the Lions. He threw for 15,120 yards and 75 touchdowns in 79 career games after being a first-round pick out of Louisville in 2014.

Tom Schad, USA TODAY August 5, 2025 at 8:48 PM

Donald Trump is slated to sign an executive order later today that will create a White House task force to handle issues surrounding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, according to a White House statement.

Reuters reported the task force will focus on security and transportation issues, while also working to "streamline visa processing and credentialing for foreign athletes, coaches, officials, and media." Those types of broad coordination efforts are common ahead of the Olympics and typically spearheaded by the federal government of the host nation.

It is unclear who will serve on the task force, though multiple news outlets reported Trump will oversee it. A ceremony to sign the executive order is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.

Opinion: Trump can't save Olympic sports through executive order, but he can by funding them

"The President considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in the statement.

Leavitt added that Trump was "instrumental" in bringing the 2028 Summer Games to the United States and described sports as "one of President Trump's greatest passions."

The White House also provided a statement from Casey Wasserman, the chairperson of the 2028 Los Angeles organizing committee, touting Trump's efforts.

"The creation of this task force marks an important step forward in our planning efforts and reflects our shared commitment to delivering not just the biggest, but the greatest Games the world has ever seen in the summer of 2028," Wasserman said.

It is unclear how closely the task force will work with state entities and officials in California, such as Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Both are Democrats and have clashed with Trump over domestic policy issues in the heavily-Democratic state, including the Trump administration's attempts to enforce immigration law. Protests broke out across Los Angeles earlier this summer after Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers raided locations across the city.

The creation of the Olympics task force comes about five months after Trump created a similar task force to handle issues surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup for men's soccer. The president appointed Andrew Giuliani, the son of his close ally Rudy Giuliani, as executive director of that group.

Justin BooneAugust 5, 2025 at 11:37 PM

Fantasy football managers are smarter than ever, so finding a player who's actually being slept on can be difficult. With that in mind, we're shifting our focus to late-round targets who could drastically outproduce their ADP in 2025.

Over the next week, I'll shine the spotlight on my favorite sleeper candidates at every key fantasy position — starting with quarterbacks.

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

Justin Boone's Fantasy Sleepers -

Quarterbacks

Running Backs (Aug. 6)

Wide Receivers (Aug. 7)

Tight Ends (Aug. 8)

Geno Smith, Raiders

Smith is an underrated NFL quarterback and, unfortunately, that perception bleeds over into the fantasy world.

It's true that his fantasy stats have taken a step back since his breakout campaign with the Seahawks in 2022, when he finished with the fifth-most points at his position and was a top-10 QB in fantasy points per game (18.5).

That year, he was eighth in passing yards, fourth in passing touchdowns and first in completion percentage.

There's no denying his 2023 season was more of a struggle, but injuries to Seattle's offensive line — including both starting tackles going down in the opener — increased the degree of difficulty. He stumbled to a QB25 result (15.7 fppg).

In 2024, Smith's numbers bounced back and he ended the year among the top five in passing yards and completion percentage. He even graded out as Pro Football Focus' eighth-best passer.

Fantasy-wise, that made him the QB17 on a per game basis (16.5 fppg). But the 34-year-old posted eight top-12 weekly performances, including six in the first half of the season before Tyler Lockett's performance declined.

The Raiders liked what they saw and traded for Smith, believing he could be their solution under center. Now, he's reunited with his coach during that career year: Pete Carroll. They're joined by Chip Kelly, who is bringing his uptempo attack to Vegas, which should keep Smith's arm busy.

You could also argue the supporting cast in the desert rivals the talent Smith had in the Pacific Northwest. Brock Bowers, Ashton Jeanty and Jakobi Meyers form the core, which will combine with a group of intriguing young wideouts vying for the No. 2 receiver job.

Remember when Jared Goff only had to play outdoors three times last year and it helped him deliver QB8 fantasy production? Well, Smith gets that cheat code this year, with 12 indoor games and just four outside. In addition, he gets the eighth-easiest slate in my fantasy strength of schedule matrix.

So, while he might be coming off two down years, it's hard to justify Smith going off the board after the top-20 quarterbacks in ADP. He's already proved he can be a low-end fantasy QB1 and, at worst, his situation in Vegas is setting him up to push for a high-end QB2 output.

Anthony Richardson Sr., Colts

Things weren't looking good for Richardson following an injury-plagued and inconsistent season, low-lighted by him taking himself out of a game to catch his breath. It seemed to get even worse, when he missed time in OTAs with a shoulder issue.

Thankfully, he was a full go for training camp and has earned a good amount of praise from those around the team for his recent performances in practice. As we know, Richardson just needs to get on the field in order to instantly be considered a fantasy starter.

The 23-year-old has only played the majority of the Colts' snaps 12 times over the last two seasons, but has eclipsed 20 fantasy points in 50% of those outings. The main reason for that is his rushing production. Even in an up-and-down campaign, Richardson still averaged over 45 rushing yards per contest — which was third-best in 2024, behind only Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels.

Indy has also assembled a great collection of talent at the skill positions, including Jonathan Taylor, Josh Downs, Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce, Adonai Mitchell and first-round rookie tight end Tyler Warren, who apparently has been flashing a real connection with Richardson so far.

Despite being locked in a camp battle with Daniel Jones, Richardson is still someone worth taking a chance on as an extreme upside swing in the later rounds.

Michael Penix Jr., Falcons

Penix is a bit of a forgotten man, overshadowed by the massive fantasy potential of the other five quarterbacks taken in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft.

After being forced to wait his turn behind veteran Kirk Cousins last season, Penix finally slid into the starting lineup in Week 16 and showed improvement in each subsequent appearance. He was the QB24 in fppg during that stretch, mostly on the back of a strong Week 18 performance when he threw for 312 yards and two scores while adding another touchdown on the ground.

Rushing production will be limited from a pocket passer like Penix, but he finds himself in the kind of offensive environment where he could thrive.

Bijan Robinson is arguably the best all-around running back in the league, Drake London announced his presence as a true No. 1 receiver last year, Darnell Mooney (when healthy) is an above-average second option and tight end Kyle Pitts has clearly formed a bond with Penix, who told reporters KP will be getting targeted often this year.

Penix will also benefit from a top-10 offensive line, a solid play-caller in Zac Robinson and the 10th-friendliest fantasy schedule among quarterbacks.

Though Penix might not have the same fantasy ceiling as some other young QBs due to his lack of rushing stats, he can still far outproduce his current ADP of QB25.

Cam Ward, Titans

I would normally never put a first-round pick in a sleeper column, but has there ever been a quarterback taken first overall who received less hype than Ward entering their rookie season?

Fantasy managers don't seem intrigued at all by the 23-year-old, and no one's making the case that he could surprise and be fantasy relevant in Year 1.

While that's still a long shot, let me remind everyone what Titans head coach Brian Callahan did when Joe Burrow went down for the last seven weeks of the 2023 season. Over that span, Callahan helped backup Jake Browning turn into a top-seven fantasy QB — though, it helps when you're throwing to the Bengals' dynamic duo of Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

To their credit, the Titans have made positive strides to improve their pass-catching corps — bringing in rookies Elic Ayomanor, Chimere Dike, Xavier Restrepo and maybe they can get something early in the season out of fading veteran Tyler Lockett. That new group will join star Calvin Ridley and promising tight end Chig Okonkwo. Tennessee also has two backs who are very capable in the passing game in Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears.

The Titans have even gone to great lengths to upgrade their offensive line, investing multiple first-round picks and many free-agent dollars in their blocking over the last couple of offseasons.

Whether that's enough for Ward to find success as a rookie remains to be seen. He does have the confidence and arm talent required to be a franchise quarterback. And while he's not the biggest threat as a runner, his pocket awareness allows him to buy time to make plays.

For fantasy, that might max him out as a mid-range QB2. However, that would make him a value where he's going now as the QB23.
