TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis ' administration is apparently preparing to build a second immigration detention center, awarding at least one contract for what's labeled in state records as the "North Detention Facility."

The site would add to the capacity at the state's first detention facility, built at an isolated airfield in the Florida Everglades and dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz." Already, state officials have inked more than $245 million in contracts for that facility, which officially opened July 1.

Florida plans to build a second detention center at a Florida National Guard training center called Camp Blanding, about 27 miles (43 kilometers) southwest of downtown Jacksonville, though DeSantis has said the state is waiting for federal officials to ramp up deportations from the South Florida facility before building out the Camp Blanding site.

"We look forward to the increased cadence," of deportations, DeSantis said last month, calling the state "ready, willing and able" to expand its operations.

Civil rights advocates and environmental groups have filed lawsuits against the Everglades facility, where detainees allege they've been forced to go without adequate food and medical care, and been barred from meeting with their attorneys, held without any charges and unable to get a federal immigration court to hear their cases.

President Donald Trump has touted the facility's harshness and remoteness as fit for the "worst of the worst," while Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has said the South Florida detention center can serve as a model for other state-run holding facilities for immigrants.

Plans for the 'North Detention Facility'

The Florida Division of Emergency Management, the state agency that built the Everglades facility, has awarded a $39,000 contract for a portable emergency response weather station and two lightning sirens for what's been dubbed the "North Detention Facility," according to records in the state's public contract database. The equipment will help enable "real-time weather monitoring and safety alerting for staff."

The contract comes as the state approaches the peak of hurricane season, and as heavy rains and extreme heat have pounded parts of Florida. Immigrant advocates and environmentalists have raised a host of concerns about the Everglades facility, a remote compound of heavy-duty tents and trailers that state workers and contractors assembled in a matter of days.

Last week, FDEM released a heavily redacted draft emergency evacuation plan for what the document called the "South Florida Detention Facility." Entire sections related to detainee transportation, evacuation and relocation procedures were blacked out, under a Florida law that allows state agencies to make their emergency plans confidential. Despite multiple public records requests by The , the department has not produced other evacuation plans, environmental impact studies or agency analyses for the facility.

Questioned by reporters on July 25, FDEM executive director Kevin Guthrie defended the emergency response agency's plans for the makeshift facility, which he says is built to withstand a Category 2 hurricane, which packs winds of up to 110 mph.

"I promise you that the hurricane guys have got the hurricane stuff covered," Guthrie said.

What if we got it wrong about Colonel Tom Parker?

That's the provocative question raised by music historian Peter Guralnick's latest book, "The Colonel and the King" (Little, Brown, 624 pp., out now), which examines Parker's reputational arc from visionary to villain.

"His motivations were almost completely misunderstood," says Guralnick of Elvis Presley's wheeling and dealing manager, who receives an overdue reassessment in the new biography. "When I call their partnership a partnership of equals, I think it really was."

For Parker, "it was love at first sight. The colonel was a believer in show business. That was his one article of belief. And Elvis was the greatest entertainer he'd ever seen. He knew it the moment he saw him."

'Burning Love': Elvis balked about recording the oversexed song. Then it became his last hit.

Peter Guralnick's new Elvis book, "The Colonel and the King," delves into the making of Colonel Tom Parker.

Guralnick realizes it's a reappraisal many aren't willing to undertake, and "I'm not trying to paint the colonel as a saint," he says. "I would be glad to have him as my manager, but at the same time, I would want to look closely at what I was agreeing to."

The book, which traces the colonel's life from his secretive childhood in Holland to his death in 1997, takes a deep dive into their productive partnership. (Elvis fans may be surprised that touchstones like the courting of Priscilla Presley and the making of the '68 Comeback Special are mentioned only in passing, but this is, after all, Parker's story.) In keeping with the characteristic level of detail that the faithful have come to expect from Guralnick's previous Presley biographies ("Last Train to Memphis," "Careless Love"), nearly half the book is turned over to Parker's illuminating letters.

These are among the biography's biggest revelations:

Colonel Tom Parker ran away from home repeatedly and claimed to have been adopted multiple times.

Parker spun a myth about his upbringing in West Virginia that endured for decades. In reality, he was born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk in Holland and came to America as an underage stowaway. He presented himself as an orphan and would ingratiate himself with families and then disappear, joining circuses, carnivals and the U.S. Army on his way to careers as a Humane Society director and a music promoter.

Guralnick cautions against taking Parker's explanation of his origins too literally. "He loved to tell that story, and you can judge from that his psychology. But he was someone who in some ways felt so abandoned and alienated from the world in which he grew up. He was abused by his father. But I don't think that was the real story. Something traumatic happened, and he carried that with him all of his life."

From Elvis to Michael Jackson: The biggest reveals in Lisa Marie Presley's memoir

Elvis' high-stakes contracts were often handshake deals that Tom Parker didn't have in writing.

Elvis' contracts, specifically with RCA, were often verbal agreements.

"One of the things that necessitated everything not being written down was the favored nation clause, which every big star had. Any big employer can understand this," Guaralnick says. "You say to me, I'll pay you $1,000 more. But if you have contracts with other people, there may be a dozen other people, so it's not just my $1,000, it's going to cost you $12,000 more."

The colonel worked those backdoor deals to Presley's advantage, Guralnick notes. In November 1955, Elvis was paying back his RCA advance out of his royalties. Eleven months later, Elvis had a million-dollar contract (the equivalent of $10 million today). "That's a pretty good turnaround," Guralnick says.

"(Parker) always articulated the belief that a deal was no good unless it was to the benefit of both parties."

Elvis never toured internationally, but mostly because he couldn't cross borders with his drugs and guns.

Presley's friends in the Memphis Mafia were convinced that Elvis wanted to tour the world and blamed Parker's fear of deportation. But the colonel worried that security would be an issue.

"Everybody thought he meant you can't get armed guards to protect Elvis from the crowds," Guralnick says. "That wasn't what he meant at all, he meant the security to keep Elvis from getting busted. Who was going to carry the drugs? Who was going to carry the guns?"

Elvis and the colonel both considered parting ways. But their respective addictions kept them together.

In addition to the infamous 1973 incident at the Hilton Hotel in Vegas, in which Elvis lashed out at Parker from the stage, and they (temporarily) fired each other, there were other instances when they attempted to split. But the colonel had developed a gambling addiction to go along with Elvis' drug dependency.

"Each of them was aware of the other's addiction, the other's failures, and neither one of them was going to bring up the other's failure for fear that the other would then bring up his own. And so they were stuck," Guralnick says.

"The colonel became in a sense not a tragic figure, because he was a life force overall, so full of vitality and creativity. But I came to see those last years with Elvis as a linked tragedy, in which each of them has their own addiction, and I just didn't see that before."

Elvis may have known Tom Parker was an undocumented immigrant − and kept it a secret.

In 1960, Parker's family in Holland recognized him in a photo with Elvis. He reluctantly agreed to bring his brother Ad to the U.S. for a visit in 1961 and apparently introduced him to Elvis, who might reasonably have wondered why his American manager's sibling spoke virtually no English.

Many in Elvis' entourage doubted that the meeting happened, "because Elvis could not keep a secret. He was the worst in the world at keeping a secret, and this was the biggest secret of all," Guralnick says.

The colonel may have presented Ad simply as someone he knew from the carnival or circus. "But I'd like to think he introduced him as his brother and that Elvis knew."

Cleveland Browns fans will get their first look at Shedeur Sanders in a live game Friday as the 2025 fifth-round draft pick is projected to start at quarterback in the team's Week 1 preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot reported Tuesday.

Sanders finds himself in line for the start amid injuries to fellow rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett, who's heading into his fourth NFL season. Veteran Joe Flacco was recently listed as QB1 on the the team's first unofficial depth chart for the 2025 season, with Pickett as the backup, followed by Gabriel at No. 3 and Sanders at No. 4.

The Browns' quarterback saga is one of the most-discussed stories of the offseason as Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel and Sanders all compete for the starting spot left after the team moved on from Deshaun Watson, who is expected to miss the season due to an Achilles injury.

Although Sanders did not get many reps with the first team during camp, he stayed positive throughout the process. The former Colorado signal-caller noted how the lack of reps did not affect his work ethic.

"That's not my place to answer," Sanders told reporters Friday, via ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. "I feel like it's not in my control, so I'm not even gonna think about that or have that even in my thought process.

"There's a lot of people that wanna have the opportunity to be at this level, and I'm here, and I'm thankful to have the opportunity, so, whatever that is it is."

"It doesn't really faze me. You gotta understand, we came all the way from an HBCU to a Power 5 [conference team], and now we here, so," he continued. "At this point, you look around, there's nothing that's a challenge, I would say."

Sanders also had an impressive showing in Day 4 of camp, throwing three touchdowns during the workout, including this one to fellow rookie Luke Floriea.

Cleveland will play three preseason games, starting with the Panthers and matchups against the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams scheduled for mid- and late-August to follow. They will begin their regular season against the Cincinnati Bengals at home on Sept. 7.

USA TODAY staff August 5, 2025 at 10:24 PM

The 2025 WNBA trade deadline is quickly approaching, and there are several players to monitor as movement heats up before the deadline on Thursday, Aug. 7.

Only a couple of players have moved so far with DiJonai Carrington, last year's Most Improved Player, going to the 2024 WNBA runner-up Minnesota Lynx and 2025 All-Star Brittney Sykes to the Seattle Storm.

Here are a few players that could move and here's a round up of the 2025 WNBA trade deadline deals so far:

Aug. 5: Seattle Storm trade for Washington Mystics guard Brittney Sykes

Guard Brittney Sykes, shown during a game on Aug. 3, 2025, was traded from the Washington Mystics to the Seattle Storm.

Storm get:

G Brittney Sykes

Mystics get:

F Alysha Clark

G Zia Cooke (has since been waived)

2026 first-round draft pick

Sykes is averaging 15.4 points, 4.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game, while shooting 31.8% from beyond the arc. The 5-foot-9 guard received her first All-Star selection this season and has four WNBA all-defensive team selections during her nine-year career, which also includes stints with the Atlanta Dream and Los Angeles Sparks. She signed with the Mystics as a free agent ahead of the 2023 season. Read more about the trade here.

Storm grade: A

Adding Sykes to Seattle does a few things. It gives the Storm a versatile defender who plays larger than they are, plus a player who can create for themselves and others. Sykes will all but certainly be inserted into the starting rotation, and that should be a very nice one-two punch with Wheeler. Additionally, Seattle now has fewer excuses not to succeed.

Mystics grade: A+

Heading into next season, the Mystics now have three first-round picks. That's not including the other selections they have in the 2026 WNBA draft. Essentially, Washington would have plenty of options to choose from, including TCU guard Olivia Miles, UCLA Bruins center Lauren Betts and UConn Huskies guard Azzi Fudd.

Aug. 3: Minnesota Lynx trade for Dallas Wings guard DiJonai Carrington

Lynx get:

G DiJonai Carrington

Wings get:

F Diamond Miller

G Karlie Samuelson (has since been waived)

2027 second-round draft pick

It is the second trade in a matter of months for Carrington, who was traded to the Wings from the Connecticut Sun back in February. The former second-round pick out of Baylor is averaging 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists this season. Read more about the trade here.

Lynx grade: B

Bringing in Carrington does a few things for Reeve's squad. First, it adds valuable guard and wing depth. Carrington is more comfortable as a wing, but could take over point guard duties if necessary. She can even start if they need her to, which is huge. With that in mind, veteran Kayla McBride has to be jumping for joy right now. Carrington will fit nicely as depth behind her, and because she's an excellent defender, it takes a lot more pressure off McBride to have to be everything all at once.

Wings grade: B

Guard Diamond Miller now has a new place to get more minutes and should thrive with the Wings. Veteran Karlie Samuelson is out for the season with an injury, but once healthy, there's a chance she could add quality minutes, too. Also, future draft stock never hurts. The Wings are somewhat leaning into a soft rebuild and should continue making moves for the future.

When is the trade deadline?

The 2025 WNBA trade deadline is at 3 p.m. ET Thursday, Aug. 7. After that, teams cannot make trades for the remainder of the season.

Why aren't many trades made in the WNBA?

The trade deadline in the WNBA is not traditionally as busy as those in the NFL, NBA or MLB. The WNBA's hard salary cap ($1,507,100 per team) has no flexibility, meaning a team can't go over. That means team have to be able to make the money work in any trade dollar for dollar.

Even with addition of the Golden State Valkyries, there are only 13 teams with 12 players each in the league. With fewer players, there are fewer trades.

Michelle and Barack Obama look smitten in a rare photo together.

The "IMO" podcast co-host, 61, took to Instagram on Aug. 4 to celebrate the former U.S. president's birthday, writing in a caption: "Happy birthday to my love, my best friend, my everything! @BarackObama, even after all these years, you're still the coolest guy I know."

In the snap, the "Becoming" author wrapped her arms around her husband, now 64, whose right arm was swathed around her as he leaned in. Obama commented, "Love you, Miche! And thanks everybody for all the birthday wishes."

Recently, rumors swirled that the former first couple, who have been married since 1992, were on the rocks. Whispers about the status of their marriage reached a fever pitch in January when Michelle sat out the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter and later the second inauguration of President Donald Trump.

Barack and Michelle's photo was taken while filming a July 16 podcast episode.

In it, the couple addressed rumors surrounding their marriage as Michelle Obama's brother Craig Robinson quipped, "Wait, you guys like each other?"

Barack Obama jokingly said "she took me back," adding with a hint of sarcasm that "it was touch and go for a while."

During the podcast episode, Robinson shared a story about a woman he met in Wichita, Kansas, who asked him about the divorce rumors and was thrilled to find out they were untrue. Both Obamas appeared tickled by the story, with Barack, in particular, confirming that he rarely sees the rumors until someone on his team informs him.

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Storm acquired All-Star guard Brittney Sykes from the Washington Mystics on Tuesday for Alysha Clark, Zia Cooke and a first-round pick in the 2026 draft.

Sykes averaged 15.4 points, 4.3 assists and 1.2 steals for the Mystics this season to earn her first All-Star selection.

"We're grateful for Slim's contributions this season as she played a key role in our growth," Washington GM Jamila Wideman said. "We're proud of the individual success she achieved during her time with us, including earning her first All-Star selection. This allows Slim the opportunity to join a team that is expected to contend for a championship this season."

She'll join a strong lineup that features Skylar Diggins, Nneka Ogwumike, Gabby Williams and Ezi Magbegor. Seattle (16-13) is currently in sixth place in the standings.

Clark has played more than 300 games for the Storm in two stints with the team and helped the franchise win two WNBA championships in 2018 and 2020.

This season she's averaging just 3.5 points and 2.4 rebounds. Clark has been impactful off the court over the years in the city starting the organization's annual toy drive benefiting Seattle Children's Hospital.

"This was a great opportunity to continue building our program and move us closer to our long-term goals," Wideman said. "Alysha brings veteran leadership that is invaluable as our team continues to develop and grow."

Cooke averaged just over 10 minutes a game this season and has shot a career-best 38.2% from behind the 3-point arc. She was the No. 10 pick in the 2023 draft by Los Angeles. She spent two seasons there before coming to Seattle. Washington waived Cooke.

Washington (13-15) is a game out of the playoffs at the moment.

Seattle is still in possession of two first round picks next season, owning Los Angeles and Las Vegas' selections.

The league's trade deadline is Thursday.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison has been suspended three games by the NFL in connection to a DUI charge from 2024, the NFL announced Tuesday.

Addison is still permitted to practice and play in the preseason.

He was arrested in Southern California last July after being found "asleep at the wheel" while blocking a freeway lane near Los Angeles International Airport. He was charged with driving under the influence after being arrested under suspicion of drunk driving.

Addison faced a minimum three-game suspension from the NFL as a result of the incident.

The third-year receiver was set to go in front of a jury trial last month. He instead pleaded down to a lesser offense. Addison will serve 12 months probation as part of the lesser charge, known as a "wet reckless," a charge that acknowledges alcohol or drugs are involved, but carries a lesser sentence than a DUI.

In addition to receiving probation, Addison was required to pay a fine and finish two online courses related to driving under the influence, per Addison's agent Tim Younger, who said he expects Addison's probation to end early after six months. As a result of pleading down, Addison will not have his driver's license suspended.

Despite not being formally convicted of a DUI, Addison is still subject to the NFL's substance abuse policy, which states that players who have violated the policy can still be punished even if they do not receive a criminal conviction.

Addison has put up two consistent years with Minnesota, amassing 133 catches for 1,786 yards and 19 touchdown in that span. He is the team's second-leading receiver and scorer behind star Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson, who is currently questionable with a hamstring injury without a clear timeline for return.
