Israel called an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday to demand the release of its emaciated hostages, including one seen digging his own grave. Their plight drew widespread sympathy — but the 2 million Palestinians starving in Gaza got even more.

Not only the Palestinians but most council members blamed the Israeli government and military for the two-month blockade of Gaza and failure to allow enough food into the conflict-wracked territory, where its health ministry has reported over 100 deaths from starvation, including many children.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who flew to New York to attend the council meeting, accused Russia and other unnamed council members as well as the international media of perpetuating "so many lies." He pointed to Hamas and Islamic Jihad's starvation of hostages taken during the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks in southern Israel "while the terrorists enjoy meat, fish and vegetables."

Saar insisted that Israel is facilitating "huge amounts of aid into Gaza," accusing Hamas of looting the food and other items and using it as "a financial tool" to sell and make money. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric has said there is no evidence of this.

Israel's top diplomat also accused the Palestinians of inventing terrorism, and Hamas of wanting to continue the war against Israel instead of reaching a ceasefire.

"The world has been turned upside down while Hamas runs its propaganda machine," Saar said. It's "a world in which Israel is put on a bench of the accused while it fights for its survival. There is a name for it. It's called antisemitism."

Testimony came from Israeli hostages' relatives

Itay David, the older brother of emaciated hostage Evyatar David, who was pictured over the weekend in a Gaza tunnel saying he was digging his own grave, urged the Security Council: "Do not let them die. We don't have time. Do not let them spend another minute in darkness."

Calling his brother "a living skeleton," Itay urged the 15 council members in a video briefing to get humanitarian aid to the hostages, saying they are being broken psychologically and physically by Hamas and denied "the most basic necessities of life."

British U.N. Ambassador Barbara Woodward reiterated the country's support for the immediate release of all hostages and condemned parading them for propaganda purposes as a "depraved" act. "Hamas and its terrorist ideologies can have no place in the future governance of Gaza and should never again threaten Israel's security," she said.

Woodward recalled the hopeful ceasefire earlier this year when hostages were released and the U.N. was able to send large amounts of aid into Gaza. "Since the ceasefire ended, the suffering of the hostages and Palestinian civilians has plumbed to new and shocking depths," she said. "Israel's aid restrictions have led to famine now unfolding in Gaza," as reported by international experts who monitor famine globally.

Woodward said she spoke to doctors last week who had served in Gaza. "They had seen children so malnourished that their wounds festered for months without healing," she said, and saw baby formula confiscated by the Israeli military.

"I call on Israel now to act to alleviate the horrendous suffering," she said.

Discussion focused on both sides

Sierra Leone's U.N. ambassador, Michael Imran Kanu, commended Itay David's advocacy for his brother and the hostages, condemned their "inhumane treatment," and said Hamas' hostage-taking is a war crime that must be prosecuted. But, said Kanu, "One atrocity cannot justify another."

"While we express deep concern for the hostages, we cannot ignore the wider humanitarian catastrophe that has engulfed Gaza," he said. "The people of Gaza have been subjected to a blockade and siege that deprived them of food, water, fuel and medical supplies," which could also constitute a war crime.

Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea said President Donald Trump has recognized "real starvation" in Gaza and the United States is working to get assistance to civilians. She urged "those who have professed concern about the reported risk of famine" to support the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an Israeli-backed American contractor, which she said reported delivering more than 1.5 million meals on Sunday. Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed trying to get to its four food distribution sites.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. ambassador, acknowledged "the distressing, unacceptable video" of 24-year-old Evyatar David, saying "We reject all inhumane and degrading treatment against anyone, especially persons held in captivity."

But in a strong rebuke, he said, "Israel is demanding the world to take a stance against starvation when it is actually starving an entire civilian population, when it is shooting at them while they seek water and food."

HIROSHIMA, Japan (Reuters) -Exactly 80 years since an atomic bomb was used in war for the first time, thousands bowed their heads in prayer in Hiroshima on Wednesday, as the city's mayor warned world leaders about the nuclear warheads that still exist today.

The western Japanese city of Hiroshima was levelled on Aug. 6, 1945, when the United States dropped a uranium bomb nicknamed "Little Boy", killing about 78,000 people instantly.

Hiroshima was the headquarters of some military units and a major supply base during World War Two. U.S. war planners calculated that the surrounding mountains would concentrate the force of the bomb and enhance its destructiveness.

"Little Boy" unleashed a surge of heat reaching 4,000 degrees Celsius (7,200 Fahrenheit) and radiation that killed tens of thousands more by the end of the year. It was followed by a plutonium bomb on Nagasaki three days later, and Japan's surrender on Aug. 15.

Representatives from a record 120 countries and territories including nuclear superpower the United States, and Israel, which neither confirms nor denies having nuclear weaponry, attended the annual ceremony at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park for the milestone year.

After a moment of silence observed at 8:15 a.m., the exact time of the blast, mayor Kazumi Matsui called on leaders to heed the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and warned of the consequences of the global trend towards a military buildup.

"Among the world's political leaders, there is a growing belief that possessing nuclear weapons is unavoidable in order to protect their own countries," he said, noting that the U.S. and Russia possessed 90% of the world's nuclear warheads.

"This situation not only nullifies the lessons the international community has learned from the tragic history of the past, but also seriously undermines the frameworks that have been built for peace-building.

"To all the leaders around the world: Please visit Hiroshima and witness for yourselves the reality of the atomic bombing."

Yoshikazu Horie, a 71-year-old tourist, expressed a similar sentiment.

"It feels more and more like history is repeating itself. Terrible things are happening in Europe ... Even in Japan, in Asia, it's going the same way, it's very scary," he said.

"I've got grandchildren and I want peace so they can live their lives happily."

In the decades following the attacks, those who survived, called "hibakusha", often faced discrimination as rumours spread that they carried diseases and their offspring could be tainted. Their numbers fell below 100,000 for the first time this year.

Japan, the only country to have suffered nuclear attacks, has stated its commitment to nuclear disarmament but is not a signatory or observer of the U.N. treaty to ban nuclear weapons.

Sean "Diddy" Combs' defense team has reached out to President Donald Trump seeking a pardon after his conviction on prostitution-related offenses, a source close to the legal team told NBC News on Tuesday.

Asked about pardons in an interview with Newsmax on Friday, Trump said "they have talked to me about Sean" but did not announce any decision.

The source close to Combs' legal team confirmed to NBC News that it has been in contact with the Trump administration.

The confirmation that the Trump administration has been approached was earlier reported Tuesday by CNN in an interview with defense team member Nicole Westmoreland.

A White House official said, "The White House will not comment on the existence or nonexistence of any clemency request."

Combs, a musician and hip-hop mogul, was convicted last month of two counts of interstate prostitution and faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in October.

He was acquitted of the most serious federal charges, which alleged a racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking.

Combs was charged with five criminal counts, and he pleaded not guilty. He was charged with one count of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking by fraud or coercion and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Combs sexually abused women and forced them into "freak offs" that involved drugs.

The U.S. government accused Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records, of leveraging his power, wealth and influence as the head of a "criminal enterprise" to sexually abuse and exploit women for his gratification over two decades.

A federal judge on Monday denied Combs' attempt to be released on bail ahead of sentencing, meaning he will be detained until October.

In Friday's interview with Newsmax, Trump was asked whether he would consider a pardon or clemency for Combs.

He seemed to cast doubt that he would grant a pardon.

"You know, I was very friendly with him. I got along with him great. And seemed like a nice guy, I didn't know him well," Trump said. "But when I ran for office, he was very hostile."

"I don't know," Trump said. "It makes it more — I'm being honest, it makes it more difficult to do."

Trump was then asked, "more likely a 'no' for Combs?"

He responded: "I would say so."

In the interview, he was also asked about the possibility of a pardon or clemency for Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of Jeffrey Epstein, and imprisoned former Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y.

ESPN and the NFL are putting a ring on it – let's hope that means a huge win for their viewers.

As originally reported by The Athletic last week, ESPN's relationship with the league will become even more intertwined in the wake of Tuesday night's announcement of a non-binding agreement in which it "will acquire NFL Network and certain other media assets owned and controlled by the NFL – including NFL's linear RedZone Channel, and NFL Fantasy – in exchange for a 10% equity stake in ESPN." The parties "are also entering into a second non-binding agreement, under which the NFL will license to ESPN certain NFL content and other intellectual property to be used by NFL Network and other assets."

In addition to making more untold billions, the NFL effectively divests itself of the costs associated with in-house broadcasting. Concurrently, its product gains even wider distribution and new innovative benefits.

NFL Network will continue to broadcast seven games per season with ESPN reaping the benefits of that – notably to its pending direct-to-consumer service. NFL Fantasy Football and ESPN Fantasy Football will merge.

"This is an exciting day for sports fans," Jimmy Pitaro, ESPN's chairman, said in a statement.

"By combining these NFL media assets with ESPN's reach and innovation, we're creating a premier destination for football fans. Together, ESPN and the NFL are redefining how fans engage with the game – anytime, anywhere. This deal helps fuel ESPN's digital future, laying the foundation for an even more robust offering as we prepare to launch our new direct-to-consumer service."

The breadcrumbs for this union have been apparent for some time.

POWER RANKINGS: As preseason nears, who are Eagles' main threats?

NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport is a frequent guest on ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show" and has even hosted it – certainly an unusual arrangement for entities seemingly set up as something of competitors when the league became the first of the major ones in North America to create its own broadcasting arm with the launch of NFL Network in 2003.

Rich Eisen, the original face of NFLN when he left ESPN to help start it, had already been revealed as the new de facto voice of ESPN Radio – "The Rich Eisen Show" to begin airing there in September from noon to 3 p.m. ET as well as on Disney+ and ESPN+. Former NFLN reporter Peter Schrager, a longtime cast member of "Good Morning Football," the network's morning show, jumped to ESPN earlier this year.

Hopefully viewers reap the benefit of better and broader coverage of the league.

The entertainment goliaths have essentially been significant others for decades, ESPN broadcasting league games on Sunday nights, Monday nights and, more recently, via select streaming opportunities through the years. "NFL Live" is an hour-long afternoon show that's a staple of the network's weekday lineup, and the cable giant's morning shows typically devote the bulk of their air time to NFL news and analysis.

NFL Network original programming, along with its workforce, has been steadily reduced for years. Despite its new campus adjacent to SoFi Stadium − home of the Rams and Chargers − in Inglewood, California, "GMFB," which now runs two hours (it was once four hours), is currently the only regular studio show in the NFLN lineup year-round. The nightly "The Insiders" show replaced "NFL Total Access," which had been the network's long-running equivalent of "SportsCenter," but is essentially aired from the homes of its reporters as the league opted to cut the production costs associated with doing a studio show. During the season, the network does a stripped-down Sunday night highlights show and daily fantasy show.

Yet it didn't even send Eisen and Hall of Fame analyst Kurt Warner to Canton, Ohio, last weekend to anchor this year's Hall of Fame inductions. Original "GMFB" cast member Kyle Brandt wore a "SportsCenter" shirt on Monday's broadcast.

There were no details Tuesday regarding the impact on programming or on-air talent, though the marriage will obviously create opportunities − along with redundancies. Multiple people at NFL Media told USA TODAY Sports that rumors of the move have lingered for months and created an environment of uncertainty. They were granted anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation.

The NFL will continue to own and operate NFL Films, which has churned out 141 Sports Emmys during its existence and helped mythologize the sport over the decades. However its footprint on NFL Network has dwindled in recent years as shows like "NFL 360," "NFL Top 10" and "A Football Life" wound down. This year, its annual "NFL's Top 100 Players" − a series underpinned by player surveys to determine the league's top stars − is being distributed on X rather than airing on NFLN.

Naturally, another major concern is how the league's seedier issues will be covered.

In past years, ESPN has done deep dives into troubling NFL stories, such as the highly controversial tenure of former Washington owner Daniel Snyder or the ramifications of concussions, with hard-hitting, in-depth investigative pieces − both on air and digitally. NFL Network rarely delved into such topics, particularly when an owner like Snyder or the New England Patriots' Robert Kraft was in the headlines. How such stories are reported on ESPN in the future will invite further scrutiny given the league's ownership stake.

NFL Network itself has been plagued for years by the dismissal of former players turned analysts who got into trouble behind the scenes or elsewhere, a list that includes Michael Irvin, Willie McGinest, Marshall Faulk, Warren Sapp, Ike Taylor and Heath Evans, among others.

HARD KNOCKS: 20 most memorable moments from NFL training camp docuseries

"Since its launch in 2003, NFL Network has provided millions of fans unprecedented access to the sport they love," Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

"Whether it was debuting Thursday Night Football, televising the (Scouting) Combine, or telling incredible football stories through original shows and breaking news, NFL Network has delivered. The Network's sale to ESPN will build on this remarkable legacy, providing more NFL football for more fans in new and innovative ways."

But how that legacy is shaped moving forward, especially regarding matters that can tarnish the reputation of America's favorite, by far, sports league remains to be seen.

Per the NFL and ESPN, the "transactions are subject to the parties' negotiation of definitive agreements, various approvals including by the NFL team owners, and customary closing conditions."

Mama June Shannon recently revealed a dramatic transformation and her shocking weight loss has fans praising her health journey.

"Never lose yourself. I've been [lost] over the years, been on top and hit rock bottom. [There are] rough days as it is. It's not all peaches and rainbows," the longtime reality star, 45, captioned a new set of photos shared via Instagram on Monday, August 4.

The video included a slideshow of several photos that highlighted her progress. In one shot, she wore form-fitting skinny jeans with a burgundy shirt. Her blonde hair was worn loose around her shoulders and she smiled for the selfie with a pair of sunglasses perched on her head.

Fans flooded the comments section with support and praised her for recent strides she's made in her relationships with her daughters.

"We can say what we want but honestly you've redeemed your place as matriarch or the family; you've stepped up so much!!" one Instagram user wrote. "And you look so good whilst doing it."

Another person added, "Good for you! I love, love your hair color and hair cut in the picture with the brown top and jeans."

A third chimed in and said, "Having a good man who loves you no matter what you weigh is what we all need. You look amazing and I love that you never stopped trying."

Mama June Explained Why She Quit Semaglutide and Focused on a Lifestyle Change

The famous mom of four has long been open about her ups and downs with weight loss, and in 2015, she underwent a gastric sleeve bypass. However, over the next few years, she gained around 100 pounds back. She later turned to semaglutide injections, a popular weight loss medication, but she eventually quit taking those once she wanted to be able to maintain her weight loss without their help.

"Not judging anyone who's on the weight loss shot because if you are then it's fine, but I don't take the weight loss shot anymore due to the fact that it is a stepping stone, but it's not a fix-all, be-all," Mama June said in an interview with Us Weekly published on May 30. "You have to make it a lifestyle change. So I made the lifestyle changes, and I know I can move forward with the lifestyle changes."

Flash flooding struck northern India on Tuesday prompting at least 70 people to be evacuated while dozens remain missing, according to officials in Uttarakhand. - Newsflare

A surge of flood water tore through a mountainous village in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand Tuesday, leaving at least four people dead and many others missing, officials say.

Dramatic video from the Himalayan village of Dharali shows the wall of water, mud and debris tearing down the mountainside and through the village, destroying the homes and businesses in its path. The flooding occurred around 1:45 p.m. local time, according to Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya.

At least four people were killed, Arya said. "There are a lot of guest houses, restaurants and hotels there, because of which we immediately requested the army to aid rescue operations," he said.

At least 20 people have been rescued and search is underway for the missing, Lt. Col. Manish Shrivastava, a defense spokesperson in Uttarakhand, said shortly after the disaster Tuesday.

Dozens of people could be trapped or missing and many homes have been washed away, disaster response officials have said. Authorities are trying to pin down the exact number of people missing or still in need of rescue. Arya said around a dozen hotels were washed away in Tuesday's flood, the reported.

Arya suggested the flood that devastated Dharali was set off by a sudden bout of heavy rain, also called a cloudburst. "There's a river there and because of the cloudburst, a lot of water came suddenly," Arya said.

Cloudbursts can cause extreme rainfall in localized areas and they typically lead to flash flooding. They occur in the foothills of the Himalayas and are triggered in part by the topography — which also makes the flooding more dangerous. The India Meteorological Department defines a cloudburst as having a rainfall rate over 100 mm (4 inches) per hour.

Cloudbursts can cause extreme damage and destruction as incredible amounts of water are funneled through the mountains and valleys and into villages in a short period of time.

CNN has not confirmed this flooding was caused by a cloudburst. There are other possible causes of an event like this, including glacial lake outbursts, dam failures or sudden releases of water from upstream. Glacial lake outbursts occur when natural ice dams weaken as they melt and collapse, sending sudden, unexpected torrents of water down steep terrain. They are most likely to occur at this time of year.

India's Meteorological Department had their highest level of warnings in place for "extremely heavy" rainfall across Uttarakhand. Some portions of the state, which is especially prone to flooding, received as much as 300 mm (12 inches) in the 24 hours through Tuesday morning.

India receives the majority of its annual rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon, which lasts from June through September. Agriculture and livelihoods depend on the heavy summer storms, but the storms can also bring such torrential downpours and flooding that the infrastructure in the region can't handle.

CNN's Jennifer Hauser and Esha Mitra contributed to this report.

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia's Great Barrier Reef has suffered the largest decline in coral cover in two of its three regions over the last year, research released on Wednesday showed, following a mass bleaching of its corals that was among the worst on record.

The Australian Institute of Marine Sciences said the reef has experienced the largest annual decline in coral cover in its northern and southern regions since monitoring began 39 years ago, with coral cover dropping between a quarter and a third after several years of solid growth.

"We are now seeing increased volatility in the levels of hard coral cover," said Mike Emslie, head of institute's long term monitoring programme.

"This is a phenomenon that emerged over the last 15 years and points to an ecosystem under stress."

The reef, the world's largest living ecosystem, stretches for some 2,400 km (1,500 miles) off the coast of the northern state of Queensland.

Since 2016, the reef has experienced five summers of mass coral bleaching, when large sections of the reef turn white due to heat stress, putting them at greater risk of death.

The 2024 event had the largest footprint ever recorded on the reef, with high to extreme bleaching across all of its three regions, the report said.

The Great Barrier Reef is not currently on UNESCO's list of world heritage sites that are in danger, though the UN recommends it should be added.

Australia has lobbied for years to keep the reef - which contributes A$6.4 billion ($4.2 billion) to the economy annually - off the endangered list, as it could damage tourism.
