NEW YORK (AP) — The toll of wildfires is usually counted in acres burnt, property destroyed and lives lost to smoke and flames. But three studies published Wednesday suggest the cost to human health from the Maui and Los Angeles wildfires was substantially higher.

Two of the papers explore what happened after the Hawaii fire in August 2023 — one of the deadliest U.S. wildfires in a century. A third looks at the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.

The Maui fire was directly blamed for more than 100 deaths. But it also left 1 in 5 with lung damage and as many as half with symptoms of depression, the new research found. The month of the fire saw 13 suicide and overdose deaths, translating to nearly double the normal suicide and overdose death rates.

The study of the Los Angeles fires concluded that in addition to at least 30 deaths attributed to the fire, more than 400 other deaths could be blamed on the event, due to interruptions in health care and other factors.

The studies, published in two American Medical Association journals, add "a really important piece to the understanding of the true health risks from these extreme climatic events," said Dr. Jonathan Patz, a University of Wisconsin environmental public health researcher who was not involved in the papers.

The results conform with existing understanding of the effects of extreme weather events, some experts said.

How to track the indirect impacts of disastrous events has been a continuing subject of academic research and even legislative proposals. There have been estimates of deaths caused by extreme heat, as well as research into the large-scale toll of wildfires driven by climate change.

"But this hones in, especially on (specific) fires," Patz said.

One of the studies, co-led by Ruben Juarez of the University of Hawaii, looked at more than 1,100 adults six to 14 months after the Maui fire. It found lower lung function in people in areas close to the fire compared with those in lower-exposure areas. Overall, about 22% had below-normal lung function.

"It's a stark reminder that wildfires can leave an invisible but lasting scar on respiratory health, long after the flames are gone," Juarez said, in an email, noting that this Friday marks the two-year anniversary of the fire.

Patz called the finding "an important new contribution."

Kristie Ebi of the University of Washington echoed that, noting that there is a growing understanding that wildfire smoke can be more toxic than standard air pollution.

"It's not just leaves and branches and trees" that are burned, she said. "It's buildings. It's gasoline stations. It's old houses that have asbestos in them. It's automobiles. There are lots of components of wildfire smoke."

She said the study suggests "this toxicity is affecting people's long-term lung function."

Of course, the researchers don't know exactly how much smoke each person was exposed to, and other studies would need to be done to explore cause-and-effect, she added.

The study also found 40% saying their health had declined since the fires, with close to half talking about increased fatigue and weakness, eye irritation and lung-related symptoms.

Jonathan Purtle of New York University was the lead author of another study, which calculated rates of suicide and overdose deaths in Maui and Hawaii's four other counties. That research team found a 97% increase in suicides and overdose death rates on Maui during the month of the wildfires. The total number of suicide and overdose deaths was 13 that month — most of them suicides. That's a significant increase, Ebi said.

They also found a 46% increase in such deaths in all five counties, which may have been influenced by displaced Maui residents migrating to other islands, the authors said.

The increases did not last: Rates fells in the following months, the researchers found.

The third study was led by researchers in Finland. They used mathematical modeling to estimate that there were 440 more deaths in Los Angeles County from Jan. 5 to Feb. 1 than what would normally have been expected, and said those are related to the fires.

Norwegian police confirmed that Alec Luhn was found alive Wednesday morning and is being transported to a hospital via a rescue helicopter. He appeared to be in good condition other than an injury to his foot.

Luhn, 38, who has worked for The Guardian, The New York Times and The Atlantic, was reported missing on Monday to the Norwegian authorities after he did not appear for a scheduled flight from Bergen to England.

Authorities confirmed that Luhn is now on his way to Haukeland University Hospital in a rescue helicopter with no injuries major reported other than one to his foot.

Luhn had been on vacation with his family in the days before he set out on the hike. In England, Luhn lives with his wife, Veronika Silchenko, an Emmy-winning television journalist, who posted on social media urging anyone who may have seen Alec to get in touch.

Luhn had set out alone on the hike on July 31 from the town of Odda on the northeast edge of the Folgefonna, a wilderness park in western Norway that is home to the country's third-largest glacier.

Local police told Norway's public broadcaster NRK that a volunteer search was launched after he was reported missing and a rescue team, as well as the police, sniffer dogs and drones renewed the search for Luhn on Tuesday before being called off due to weather conditions.

Bad weather the night before had forced the search with a helicopter to be suspended overnight, local police said.

"The weather started to get really bad around midnight. At that time, it was not reasonable to continue the search up in the mountains," Tatjana Knappen, an operations manager at Western Police District, told NRK. Knappen said a strong gale was forecast to continue on Tuesday, but it was hoped there would be a possible window for the helicopter to operate.

Raised in the Midwest, Luhn graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2010 and worked as a foreign correspondent in Moscow for around a decade, primarily for The Guardian and The Telegraph newspapers. He later switched to focus on covering the effects of climate change. Luhn is a Pulitzer Center reporting fellow and currently writes for the Scientific American magazine. Along with a number of awards, Luhn also has two Emmy nominations.

Luhn is an experienced hiker who regularly travels to remote and challenging environments as a reporter, also often spending his vacations seeking out wildernesses, his friends and family said. He has trekked as part of a scientific expedition deep in the wilderness in Alaska and visited the Arctic in both Canada and Russia. He has also worked in conflict zones, including in Ukraine and Somalia.

Sharp-eyed Florida sheriff's deputies prevented a possible mass shooting Tuesday when they arrested a man armed to the teeth with high-powered guns just outside a busy airport, officials said.

Michael Rodrigues, 41, was in a rental car packed with an AR-15, at least two loaded magazines, and several knives parked outside the Palm Beach International Airport in a restricted lot, on Tuesday morning, the Miami Herald reported.

Palm Beach Sheriff's deputies approached the "suspicious" man at 7:10 a.m. as the suspect was getting dressed outside the car — discovering the small armory inside his vehicle after finding one loaded magazine in a glovebox, the outlet stated, citing the sheriff's office.

Some of those deadly weapons were concealed under a blanket in the car, according to the Herald.

Rodrigues was taken into custody without incident.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Wednesday eased a key term of the house arrest imposed on former President Jair Bolsonaro in his coup plot case, allowing family members to visit without prior authorization.

De Moraes' authorization, which followed a request from federal police, means the relatives will be able to visit the residence where Bolsonaro lives with his wife, Michelle, without first asking court for permission. It applies to Bolsonaro's sons and daughter, grandchildren and close relatives of his wife.

The conservative former leader is on trial for allegedly masterminding a coup plot to remain in office despite his election loss to current leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing.

The house arrest order has sharply divided Brazilians, with his supporters saying the case against Bolsonaro is persecution of a political adversary, while Lula supporters say the matter should be decided in court.

The case has gripped the South American country as it faces a trade war with the United States. Bolsonaro has drawn the support of the U.S. government, with President Donald Trump calling the prosecution of Bolsonaro a witch hunt and tying his decision to impose a 50% tariff on imported Brazilian goods to his ally's judicial situation.

The original house arrest order issued Monday allowed only Bolsonaro's lawyers to have unlimited access to his residence.

De Moraes, who is responsible for putting Bolsonaro on trial, had ordered the former president's house arrest for violating precautionary measures imposed on him by spreading content through his sons. The 70-year-old politician denies that and pledges to appeal the decision.

The court last month had ordered Bolsonaro to wear an electronic ankle monitor and obey a curfew while the proceedings are underway.

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is expected to be ready for Week 1 as he deals with a reported aggravated disc in his back, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

The 37-year-old Stafford visited back specialist Dr. Steven Watkins for a second time on Saturday. He remains "week-to-week" and received an epidural to aid in his recovery. Stafford has been held out of training camp after encountering back soreness during the offseason.

"He's making good progress, he feels good (and) we've been able to kind of increase some things behind the scenes," said Rams head coach Sean McVay, via The Athletic. "He's in good spirits. … We do have a good plan in place that we feel good about, and he's progressing in the right direction."

There were talks about Stafford exiting Los Angeles over the offseason, but he ended up agreeing to a contract restructure to remain with the team. He's entering his fifth season with the Rams, who won a Super Bowl in his first season in L.A. but have failed to advance past the divisional round since.

In Stafford's absence, Jimmy Garoppolo has taken first-team reps while former fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett has worked with the second team. The Rams are scheduled to open their season Sept. 7 against the Houston Texans.

- - 2025 NFL betting preview: Bet on the Chicago Bears to miss the playoffs

Michael FiddleAugust 6, 2025 at 8:22 PM

I've been sports betting for 15 years now, and I can't remember the last time I watched a game without knowing what the odds were. After being around the industry so long, I've developed a strong sense not only of how markets move and evolve, but also which betting markets are established and which are relatively new.

One market that's gained traction recently is the simple yes/no bet on whether an NFL team will make the playoffs. While this was occasionally available in the past, it's now widely offered for all teams, posted months in advance and often still available well into the season.

I find this market particularly exploitable. There are consistent angles to target: weak divisions, unbalanced schedules and asymmetric injury situations. Sure, these factors are all priced into the odds, but the key is identifying where the market is over- or under-weight for certain teams.

Here are three NFL playoff futures bets I think are worth placing right now:

San Francisco 49ers to make the playoffs (-180 at BetMGM)

The 49ers enter this season with the easiest schedule in the NFL based on opponent projected win totals. After finishing last in their division, they draw a schedule with a 41.5% opponent win percentage last season. They were hit hard by the injury bug last year and will be hoping for better health this season. The run defense was abysmal, ranking in the bottom five of the league, but this year they addressed it by drafting elite defensive line prospect Mykal Williams in the first round and bringing back Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator. Despite ranking 29th in points allowed last season, they were No. 2 in yards per game allowed. The latter is a larger indicator of what's likely to happen moving forward.

The offense has continued to be plug-and-play throughout the Kyle Shanahan era, and I expect QB Brock Purdy to stay healthy, thanks to a strong offensive line and a play style that limits exposure to big hits.

The reason I prefer this angle over betting the division for San Francisco is because, while the division is strong, the conference is relatively weak. It would not be surprising to see three of the four teams in the NFC West make the playoffs. Meanwhile, all eight teams in the NFC East and NFC North face tougher-than-average schedules, according to Sharp Football Analysis.

Chicago Bears to miss the playoffs (-190)

The Bears have the seventh-hardest projected schedule in the NFL, including six games against an incredibly tough NFC North, and they have a new head coach along with a second-year quarterback. All of these factors make this team a clear fade for me. However, the fundamental flaw in my eyes is the Bears' team identity compared with their playing conditions.

This team is trying to play with pace and space, loading up on weapons to surround Caleb Williams. Football is won in the trenches, especially in cold and windy Chicago. There is a reason no Bears quarterback has ever thrown for 4,000 yards in a single season: home conditions often deter those types of performances. The next great Bears team will have an elite defense and a strong running game; this is not it.

The Bears ranked 22nd in TD conversion rate last season, and I am skeptical the new coaching staff will vastly improve that metric; scoring TDs on 51.4% of drives into the red zone and then settling for field goals in tough conditions is not a recipe for success. Fade the Bears this year.

Jacksonville Jaguars to make the playoffs (+165)

Jacksonville is a sneaky team worth attacking in several ways this offseason. It has the potential to be a breakout team that could earn a playoff berth and some award nominations such as Liam Coen for Coach of the Year, Travis Hunter for Rookie of the Year, or even a Trevor Lawrence MVP long shot. I want to play the Jaguars in various plus-odds ways.

The AFC South is the weakest division in the conference. The Colts still have not named a starting quarterback — and the choices are Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones. The Titans have a rookie quarterback and a second-year head coach. The Texans face under-discussed issues with a problematic offensive line, not to mention Joe Mixon's foot injury.

Lawrence has breakout WR Brian Thomas Jr., who had 1,282 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, and the threat of Heisman winner Hunter, whom the Jaguars traded up to No. 2 to get in the 2025 NFL Draft. Finally, with the dual threats at RB between Tank Bigsby (nearly 800 rushing yards and 7 TDs) and Travis Etienne, the depth of talent and diversity of play calls should vastly improve on offense.
