Young kids missed the pandemic's school disruptions. Their reading scores are still behind

WASHINGTON (AP) — WhenCOVID-19 wrought havocon society in early 2020, today's youngest schoolchildren were infants or yet to be born. Now in their early school years, researchers are beginning to see how the pandemic years have shaped their education, even though many had yet to set foot in a classroom when it began.

Associated Press

First and second graders continue to perform worse than their pre-pandemic counterparts on math and reading tests, according to a report published Tuesday by the education assessment and research group NWEA. But while math scores have inched up every year, reading scoresremain stagnant, the report shows. The data suggests the slump in academic performance is not rooted only in instructional disruption. Broader societal shifts might be at play.

In the youngest students' failure to recover, "there's something kind of systemic here happening ... within schools and outside of schools," said Megan Kuhfeld, a researcher at NWEA. "We can't pinpoint one specific cause."

The pandemic's effects on older children'sacademic achievementare well-documented. COVID-19 forced kids out of classrooms and into online learning. Students lost out on face time with instructors, theirmental healthsuffered in the isolation, and their well-beingdeterioratedas some families endured hardship. Some schoolchildrenstopped showing up to schoolaltogether.

The federal government gave billions of dollars to school districts to help students catch up — with mixed results. In 2024, reading scores for fourth- and eighth-graderscontinued a downward slide, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Math scores, however, trended upward.

Testing for younger kids is less common, so the NWEA report offers insights into the depth of the academic disruption. It's based on assessments given to students in the 2024-25 school year.

Kindergarten scores for math and science remained roughly the same throughout the pandemic. First and second graders are trending in the same way as their older peers. Math and reading scores are still falling short of pre-pandemic levels, although math scores are slowly rising. Reading scores have remained roughly the same since the spring of 2021, when the first full school year in the pandemic was wrapping up.

It's unclear what is depressing the scores. Kuhfeld pointed to emerging data showing that fewer parents are reading to their children, an activity that has been shown to boost literacy. A 2024 survey of parents in the United Kingdom found that less than half of children under 5were regularly read to, a 20-point drop from a dozen years prior.

In Minnetonka Public Schools outside Minneapolis, school leaders say that while reading scores dipped during the pandemic, they have since recovered. Teachers now focus more onphonicsand also regularly assess students on literacy. Students who are behindreceive extra helpon the parts of reading where they struggle. A student who has difficulty reading aloud might be asked to read to one of their classmates, for example.

But some things are out of the district's control. During the pandemic, Associate Superintendent Amy LaDue said, many young children were homebound. They missed out on activities like going to museums and playing with other children, which are helpful for language and literacy development. She believes that's one factor that continues to hamper kids, especially those from low-income families.

"These kids weren't in school when the pandemic happened, but (some) were ... in early childhood and preschool," LaDue said. "Their opportunities ... to have those experiences outside of their home that build literacy skills and to apply them with peers probably were impacted because they were home."

Along with interventions at school, a growing number of states and cities are investing in pre-kindergarten to help children with early literacy. California has introduced universal pre-kindergarten, and New York City is expanding its pre-kindergarten program to 2-year-olds, giving toddlers an early start on learning.New Mexicohas made child care free for nearly all families.

Hurley's contract, which was obtained by the USA TODAY Sports Network, is set to run through June 30 with the Sun Devils. This means, even if the Sun Devils don't elect to renew Hurley's contract, there will be some money going to him if he is let go by the athletic department. Hurley is owed approximately $900,000 if he is fired.

The Sun Devils have only made it to the NCAA Tournament three times under Hurley, and have finished with a winning record in four seasons. Hurley, the former Duke guard and brother to Connecticut coach Dan Hurley, has only won 20 or more games four times and has not led the Sun Devils to a conference title.

Since the Sun Devils moved to the Big 12, they are 29-35 overall and 11-27 in Big 12 play. The best win forArizona Stateunder Hurley in the Big 12 came just last week against No. 16 Kansas and Darryn Peterson in Tempe. It marked just the 15th win over a ranked team in his 11-seasons, and the ninth over a top-15 ranked team.

Arizona State opens up Big 12 tournament play on Tuesday, March 10 at 12:30 p.m. ET against Baylor at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri as the No. 12 seed in the bracket.

Knicks' Mohamed Diawara posterizes Nic Batum — who he grew up watching — with vicious dunk

LOS ANGELES — Mohamed Diawara's first NBA dunk was a poster.

The Knicks rookie highlighted an otherwise dreary Knicks loss Monday with a dribble through the Clippers defense before a one-handed jam over fellow Frenchman Nic Batum.

It occurred late in the third quarter and ignited a pro-Knicks crowd at the Intuit Dome, but the visitors couldn't complete a comeback and fell amid a rash of turnovers,126-118.

"I was just driving and dunked the ball and fortunately (Batum) was there," Diawara, who grew up in France hearing much about Batum, told The Post. "But that was a good play. Funny to see that. My first dunk – my first poster – was against him."

Diawara's jam was part of an 11-3 run to end the third quarter. He finished with five points in 18 minutes with four rebounds and two assists.

"(The dunk) felt good," Diawara said. "It was about time. I was looking forward to doing it."

With Jose Alvarado struggling, coach Mike Brown briefly gave Tyler Kolek a meaningful cameo in the fourth quarter.

Kolek has been basically out of the rotation since Alvarado was acquired in a trade. On Monday, Kolek went scoreless in just two minutes.

"I thought Jose was struggling a little bit. So I threw Tyler out there to see if we could get something from him, similar to me throwing Jordan Clarkson out there (in the previous game against the Lakers)," Brown said. "Tyler didn't get a long time to play because we put Jalen out there to see if we could make a run. But I said this before, those guys have to keep themselves ready just in case their number is called. Because it can be called at any time."

Brown knocked on wood while crediting the performance staff, including owner James Dolan's son, Quentin, for keeping Mitchell Robinson healthy throughout this season.

"Casey (Smith, the VP of Sports Medicine), Chico (Goenega, the head athletic trainer), those guys, and Quentin Dolan, those guys have done a nice job of coming up with a plan," Brown said. "And the biggest thing is to get him in games this year and making sure he stays healthy. And so our whole medical staff, starting with those three guys down to everybody that's in our medical department. They've done a great job of keeping him healthy and keeping him in the game and practicing and stuff like that. So I applaud them more than anybody else for what they put together and how they're executing it."

Quentin Dolan holds the title of Senior VP, Player Performance and Science Leader.

Robinson, who has been injury prone throughout his career and underwent multiple surgeries on his ankle, again sat Monday versus the Clippers in the second game of a back-to-back. Robinson hasn't played both games of a back-to-back all season.

Karla Mosley Talks 'Big Adjustment' Moving Family to Atlanta for

Karla Mosley says landing the lead role in Beyond the Gates brought both joy and a "sinking feeling"

NEED TO KNOW

  • During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actress opens up about how she navigated the "big adjustment" of moving her family of four to Atlanta for the role

  • The actress also reflects on the honor of leading the show alongside industry giants, like Clifton Davis and Tamara Tunie

WhenKarla Mosleywas cast asDani DupreeinCBS'Beyond the Gates, she felt "complete joy and excitement," but also a "sinking feeling" in her chest.

The soap opera veteran tells PEOPLE that landing the role came with a mix of emotions. Mosley, who's mom to two daughtersAurora Imani, 7, andWilla Josephine, 4, with partner John Rogers, says leading a daytime drama was something she "worked so hard" to achieve. But along with "complete joy and excitement," also came the realization that she'd have to move her family of four from Los Angeles to Atlanta.

"[Nothing] against Atlanta, I just hadn't been there. It wasn't on my radar that that's where I was going to move. And I've moved so many times in my life as an actor, but never with a family," Mosley explains. "It was a big adjustment for everybody."

After spending over a year in the bustling Southern city, the doting mom says that her family has adjusted to the move. In fact, Mosley, who grew up in New York, admits that life in Atlanta has "grown" on her.

"The people are dope," she says. "We have got great community. My kids love their schools, so I'm like, 'Okay, there is a plan. God had a plan, [and] it's bigger than mine.'"

For Mosley, making the change was "worth it." She tells PEOPLE that seeing her face on the poster as one of the leads ofBeyond the GatesalongsideClifton Davis,Tamara TunieandDaphnée Duplaixis a "honor" that she will never take for granted.

"On those nights when I'm really tired and I have two scripts the next day, but I have to put my kids to bed, and I'm like, 'How am I going to get it all together?' I have to dig deep and figure out how to do it and to continue to do good work, because the thing about soap operas is it is very easy to get into a rhythm and to feel you don't have to do quite as much, but you get as much as you give," Mosley explains.

"That's a lot of material, and we only get one or two takes, so you're going to have some moments that don't quite go where you want them to go, and you have to be able to let those go," she adds. "But I want to have as few of those as possible because that's what it means to lead."

With every script she reads, Mosley says she sees herself in the pages and understands the impact of sharing authentic stories with the world. However, nothing reminds her of the importance of her role quite like meeting people who were positively impacted by what they saw onscreen.

"When I go to church or to the grocery store or I'm traveling and people come up and they reflect on their experience with the material... When they talk about their family members or their own journeys, those are the moments when I realized how important the work that we're doing is," she says.

With the soap opera in its second season, Mosley believes her character is exactly where she's supposed to be. She also teases that viewers will get to see a different side to Dani Dupree as the season progresses.

"She is kind of settling into the life that she's always wanted, what she imagined life would be like with Bill [portrayed by Timon Kyle Durrett], what she gave up her career for, she's now having all these years later," she shares. "She gets to have her career on her terms as someone who's more settled in her skin and she gets to have this love that's deep and fun and exciting, but also committed. And then she's also getting to be there for her mother."

"While Nicole [portrayed by Duplaix] is becoming a little bit more of the wild child, Dani [has] always felt like a black sheep in the family, the sort of unreliable one [and] the emotional one," she adds. "And now she gets to connect with her mother, .. and I think those moments are so special and really deeply important to her."

Drew Carey's Weight Loss: Inside the Comedian's Health Journey Since His Heart Attack Scare

Drew Carey revealed that he lost 80 lbs. in 2010

People Drew Carey celebrates his 500th

NEED TO KNOW

  • The comedian and host of The Price Is Right said he was motivated to lose weight after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, along with a heart attack that took place in 2001

  • He has relied on a low-carb diet and cardio workouts to sustain his weight loss

Drew Careyhas always been open about his weight loss and health journey, which began more than a decade ago.

"I was sick of being fat on the camera. Really, I just got sick of it,"The Price Is Righthost told PEOPLE in 2010. "Once I started losing weight, again, like once I started dropping a couple pant sizes, then it was easy 'cause once you see the results, then you don't wanna stop."

Though it's been 16 years since the longtime comedian dropped 80 lbs. and went from a size 44 to a size 33, he's been able to keep it off using his tried-and-true method of diet and exercise. Carey does "lots of cardio" and keeps most of his meals carb-free.

During a March 2026 appearance onTed Danson's podcast,Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Carey said he had a heart attack in 2001 but didn't realize what it was at first.

The day after he said his "heart rate went upto something really crazy" during a jog. At first, Carey brushed his symptoms off, but when he went to the hospital the following day, he learned that he'd had a heart attack and felt motivated to work on his health.

Here's everythingThe Price Is Righthost Drew Carey has said about his health and weight loss journey.

He prioritized his health after a diabetes diagnosis

Drew Carey hosts

During his first year as host ofThe Price Is Right, Carey told PEOPLE in March 2024 he would go out to a diner after filming and order pasta, a cupcake and an iced tea "with a bunch of lemons." Then he'd go home and eat Doritos, drink "several Pepsis" and take an Ambien before heading to bed.

"It wasmiserable to live like that," he explained, adding that his doctor gave him a wakeup call when he diagnosed him with type 2 diabetes. Carey said his doctor warned him that if he didn't change his lifestyle, his life was "going to be shorter" and that he would have "bad things to look forward to."

The formerWhose Line Is It Anyway?star was also diagnosed with heart disease in 2001 and had to undergo an angioplasty, perParade. He also had a stent inserted into one of his arteries.

The warning from his doctor gave Carey the push he needed to change his lifestyle. He toldParadethat in November 2009, he had set a goal to go from 262 lbs. to 170 lbs. by the following year — and almost succeeded, losing 80 of the 92 lbs. he wanted to shed.

"I look in the mirror and I feel like I'm in my 20s again," he told the outlet in September 2010. "I feel like I have my whole life back. I could live to be 100 now."

Carey also credits his choice of exercise for helping him maintain his weight loss. The comedian told PEOPLE he does 45-minute cardio workouts several times a week. Though those workouts began on the elliptical, he took up running after he lost weight.

"I knew having a running goal or a race coming up would give me a little more motivation," Carey toldRunner's Worldin August 2011. "I actually was worried about the pounding, but I actually love running more than working out on the elliptical. Now if I get on the elliptical, I feel like I'm trapped."

In August 2010, he ran his first 10K in nearly 25 years.

He joked he's lost "1,000 lbs." over his lifetime

Drew Carey hosted the 9,000th episode of

As the host ofThe Price Is Rightcan attest, keeping the weight off year after year is no easy feat. He joked with PEOPLE that he's lost somewhere around "1,000 lbs." over his "whole life."

Though Carey has noted that weight loss left him feeling great, the best reward was the improvement in his health. In addition to shedding the lbs., the comedian reported that he had reversed his type 2 diabetes and no longer needed medication.

"I always thought I was going to die before I was 60," he toldParade."My father died of a heart attack in his 40s. I'm not an idiot. The writing was on the wall."

He said he mostly avoids carbs

As for his nutrition, Carey has kept the weight off by eating "no carbs." The former host ofThe Drew Carey Showtold PEOPLE that he stays away from "starches of any kind" and opts for protein like grilled chicken and snacks like vegetables and fruit.

Per theMayo Clinic, carbohydrates are part of a healthy diet and are needed to provide a source of energy for the body, particularly the brain.

He called his weight loss "freeing"

Drew Carey during the 10,000th episode of

Carey has been able to maintain his 80-lb. weight loss "more or less" for over a decade. For him, the real victory isn't physical, but emotional.

"It's better being like this," he explained to PEOPLE. "I love myself enough now to want that for myself and desire that for myself. It's a whole kind of change of mindset that you have to have about your whole life. ... but once you do, it's so freeing."
