Details of US-Iran deal begin to emerge after Trump announces progress

CAIRO (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump said a deal with Iran onthe warin the Middle East, including opening the Strait of Hormuz, has been “largely negotiated” after calls with Israel and other allies in the region over the weekend.

Associated Press United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio speaks at a joint presser with India's Minister of External Affairs S. India United States Rubio

But other officials counseled caution on Sunday, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio noting that “significant progress, although not final progress has been made” in the negotiations.

Rubio, on a four-day visit to India for meetings with Indian, Australian and Japanese officials, said he hoped that there would be good news in the coming hours.

The negotiations have succeeded in one of Trump’s main aims, Rubio said, “that is a world that no longer has to be in fear or worry about an Iranian nuclear weapon.”

Trump said on Saturday he had spoken with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain, and separately with Israel.

“Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly,” Trump said on social media, with no details.

The announcement capped a week in which the U.S. weighed a new round ofattacks on the Islamic Republicthat would break a fragile ceasefire.

Details of a deal begin to emerge

The potential deal will include Iran’s commitment that it won’t pursue a nuclear weapon, and Tehran agreed to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, according to two regional officials.

One official, with direct knowledge of the negotiations, said how Iran will give up its highly enriched uranium is a subject of further negotiations over the course of a 60-day period.

It’s highly likely that a part of the amount will be diluted, while the rest will be transferred to a third country, potentially Russia, he said.

Iran has 440.9 kilograms (972 pounds) of uranium that is enriched up to 60% purity, a short, technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90%, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Strait of Hormuz will be gradually open in parallel with the U.S. ending its blockade of Iran’s ports, said the official.

The U.S. will also allow Iran to sell its oil through sanctions waivers, said the second official who has been briefed on the negotiations. Sanctions relief and release of Iran’s frozen funds will be negotiated during the 60-day time frame, he said.

Both officials said the draft deal includes an end of the war between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as a commitment of not interfering in the domestic affairs of countries in the region. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss closed-door deliberations.

Twelve weeks have passed since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28, killing top Iranian officialsincluding its supreme leaderand interrupting nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran for the second time in less than a year. Iran fired at Israel and at neighbors hosting U.S. forces, shaking Gulf nations that had considered themselves safe havens in a tough region.

A ceasefire has held since April 7. But Iran’s decision to effectively close the Strait of Hormuz for ships carrying regional oil, natural gas and other critical supplies has been a focal point of global concern and economic pain.

Israel concerned over Hezbollah

Israeli officials are concerned that Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group allied with Iran, remains a serious threat to Israel and that Lebanon is ill-equipped to disarm it.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Trump that Israel “maintains freedom of action against threats in all arenas, including Lebanon,” according to an official familiar with the conversation. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The official said Trump made it clear to Netanyahu that he will not sign any final agreement without the conditions that Iran dismantle its entire nuclear program and remove all enriched uranium from the country.

Israel’s Minister of Science and Technology Gila Gamliel, a member of Netanyahu’s Likud party and part of his national security cabinet, told Israel's Army Radio on Sunday morning that Israel is taking a “wait-and-see” approach.

There is a fragile,U.S.-brokered ceasefirein the Israel-Hezbollah war in Lebanon since April 17, a conflict that began two days after the Iran war started.

Despite the ceasefire, firing continues on both sides. Hezbollah launches daily drones and projectiles toward Israeli soldiers and northern Israel, and Israel strikes targets in Lebanon while its troops remain in large swaths of southern Lebanon.

More than 3,000 peoplehave been killed in the latest round of fighting, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Additionally, 22 Israeli soldiers and a defense contractor have been killed in or near southern Lebanon, and two civilians have been killed in northern Israel, mostly from Hezbollah drones, according to Netanyahu’s office.

Lidman reported from Tel Aviv, Israel. Associated Press writers Sheikh Saaliq in New Delhi and Munir Ahmed in Islamabad contributed to this report.

Tyrone GAA legend McGuigan dies aged 71

Former Tyrone forward Frank McGuigan, widely regarded as one of the county's finest footballers, has died at the age of 71.

BBC

The Ardboe club-man captained the Red Hands to the 1973 Ulster title in just his second year in the senior panel at the age of 19.

After returning home in 1983 following six years in the United States, he famously scored 11 of Tyrone's 15 points in the 1984 Ulster final win over Armagh in what became known as 'The Frank McGuigan final'.

A builder by trade, McGuigan's performance in the '84 final helped earn him an All-Star, but his career was prematurely ended that year by a car crash that shattered his right leg.

In addition to his achievements at inter-county level, McGuigan won four Tyrone SFC titles with Ardboe.

His four sons - Frank Jnr, Brian, Tommy, and Shay - all followed in his footsteps by representing Tyrone and won five All-Ireland medals between them.

'The King has left the field but his legacy lives on'

In a statement, O'Donovan Rossa GAC, Ardbo paid tribute to "The King" who is regarded as "one of the greatest footballers ever to wear the colours of club and county and a true legend of Ardboe and Tyrone football".

"Frank played a central role in the famous Ardboe teams which secured three consecutive Tyrone Senior Championships between 1971 and 1973 and famously returned from the USA to help the Rossas capture another Championship title in 1984," they said.

"That same year, he produced one of the greatest individual performances ever witnessed in Ulster football, scoring eleven points from play for Tyrone in the Ulster Final at Clones — five with his left foot, five with his right and one with his fist — an unforgettable exhibition of unique skill, composure and supreme talent.

"His exploits in 1984 earned Frank the distinction of becoming Ardboe's first ever All-Star recipient, and he would later continue his lifelong service to the club as manager of our senior team."

It continued: "Known affectionately across Tyrone and beyond simply as 'The King', Frank was a genius of a footballer who commanded the respect and admiration of the entire GAA fraternity both at home and abroad.

"Through his brilliance, humility and love for Gaelic games, he truly put our great club on the map and inspired generations of players who followed. The King has left the field, but his legacy will live forever in Ardboe and Tyrone."

Trump's Justice Department scrubs its website of news releases about Jan. 6 defendants

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Justice is acknowledging it has removed from its website news releases about criminal cases related to theJan. 6, 2021, riot, calling the information about the prosecutions “partisan propaganda.”

Trump Settlement Capitol Riot

The purge of news releases documenting criminal charges, convictions and sentencings is the latest step by the Trump administration to dramatically rewrite the history of the assault on the Capitol, when hundreds of supporters of Republican President Donald Trump stormed the building in an effort to halt the congressional certification of his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

Trump, on his first day back in office in January 2025, pardoned, commuted the prison sentences or vowed to dismiss the cases of all of the 1,500-plus people charged with crimes during the Capitol assault, including those convicted of attacking officers with makeshift weapons such as flagpoles, a hockey stick and crutch.

On Monday, the Justice Department announced the creation of a $1.776 billion fundmeant to compensate Trump allies who feel they were unjustly investigated and prosecuted.Acting Attorney General Todd Blanchehas not ruled out that rioters convicted of violence will be eligible for payouts, prompting bipartisan anger in Congress.

After a journalist on Friday observed on the social media platform X that the Justice Department was “quietly” removing news releases on its website that were related to the Jan. 6 attack, including about a Texas man who pleaded guilty to assault and also faced separate state charges of soliciting a minor, the department responded through its “rapid response” account that there was “nothing ‘quiet’ about it.”

“We are proud to reverse the DOJ's weaponization under the Biden administration. We will do everything in our power to make whole those who were persecuted for political purposes,” the post said. “This includes stripping DOJ's website of partisan propaganda.”

Among the releases removed from the site were those concerningseditious conspiracy casesagainst members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, far-right extremist groups. The Justice Department, in an unopposed motion last month, asked a federal appeals court to vacate those seditious conspiracy convictions, a request that was granted Thursday. The department on Friday moved to dismiss the cases against the group members.

Where does Bills' James Cook rank among NFL running backs in 2026?

TheBuffalo Billsare known for quarterback Josh Allen but running back James Cook is up there for the team, too.

USA TODAY

Cook signed afour-year extensionlast offseason worth $48 million. That average of his contract makes him tied as the running back with the 11th highest salary in the NFL heading into 2026.

Does Cook outrank that pay status? According to SleeperNFL, the answer is yes.

However, Bills Mafia might think he deserves to be higher than the ranking.

Cook landed in the No. 8 overall spot in the outlet's running back list:

A big reason for thinking Cook is overlooked is his 1,621 rushing yards last season. That led the NFL in 2025, so thinking of a rank higher than eighth would be fair.

But with the quarterback league the NFL is, it simply is Allen's shine keeping Cook that low. Even so, Buffalo does not take Cook for granted.

Bills Wirewill continue to provide updates throughout the 2026 offseason.

Explainer-Despite Trump's pressure, Cuba may not turn out like Venezuela

By Patricia Zengerle

Reuters

WASHINGTON, May 23 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has been stepping up pressure on Communist-controlled Cuba, after using the military in January to remove Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Here is why Cuba may not be Venezuela 2.0, even though Caracas had been a key supporter of the island's government.

WHO WOULD TAKE OVER?

In Venezuela, then-Vice President ‌Delcy Rodriguez took over as U.S. forces seized Maduro in a lightning raid on Jan. 3 and has served as acting president since.

Rodriguez was Maduro's deputy, but there is no similar ‌deputy to Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, or former President Raúl Castro, the 94-year-old former president the U.S. indicted this week in a bid to increase pressure on Havana.

"The security apparatus in Cuba has dismantled, systematically dismantled, every alternative or potentially alternative power source," said Orlando Pérez, an expert on U.S.-Latin America relations at the University of North Texas in Dallas.

Venezuela also has a popular opposition leader, Nobel laureate María Corina Machado, who won elections in 2024 but was not allowed to take power and hopes to return to her home country this year for free elections. Cuba has no similar figure.

Raúl Rodriguez Castro, grandson of the former president, met this month with CIA Director John Ratcliffe during a rare visit by a U.S. spy chief to Havana, fueling talk he might agree to work with Washington.

But the younger Castro has no formal position in the Cuban government and is not expected to betray ‌his family. He attended a rally in Havana on Friday to protest his grandfather's indictment.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND RISKS?

Cuba has been a U.S. antagonist for decades, since Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution. Trump is strongly supported by hardline Cuban-Americans in Florida, who have pushed for U.S.-instigated regime change for decades. The Republican U.S. president has made clear he wants to see change in their homeland.

In the past, Cuba was seen as a threatening Soviet satellite, an uncomfortably close 90 miles from Florida, and more recently as a potential site for Chinese influence in the Western Hemisphere. But Russia's attentions have shifted elsewhere since the fall of the Soviet bloc, and Cuba's economic problems have diminished its ability to confront the U.S.

Experts say instability in Cuba also threatens a migration crisis. Its people have been living largely without power due to the U.S. blockade and could opt to flee the island in case of war or chaos.

Cuba's military is more ideologically entrenched and cohesive than Venezuela's and more likely to put up a fight. Dozens of Cuban agents were ‌killed in Venezuela in January when they were providing security for Maduro, but survivors would have learned from that raid how U.S. forces operate.

Cuba is also seen as more advanced in surveillance and intelligence, especially after years of cooperation with Russia and China.

WHAT WOULD CUBA BRING TO THE U.S.?

Venezuela has natural resources, and U.S. companies have been lining up to produce oil in the South American country, which has seen exports jump.

Cuba does not have any similar resource. Its state-run tourism industry was behind other Caribbean destinations in price and quality even before this year's steep downturn, which has been exacerbated by shortages tied to Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign, a U.S. blockade and threats of tariffs for countries that provide it with fuel.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, an outspoken Cuba hawk who is also national security adviser, is seen as the ‌force behind the Trump administration's Cuban policy.

Rubio, a Florida native and the son of Cuban immigrants, has run for president before and is expected to seek the office again. A major change in Cuba could burnish his political ambitions, but a failure poses major risks at a time when the U.S. faces huge budget deficits and is already waging a campaign in Iran that has been estimated to cost billions of dollars per day.

WHAT ARE THE LEGAL ISSUES?

Washington's ability to change relations with ‌Cuba is limited by the 1996 Helms-Burton Act, which ties the lifting of a decades-long U.S. embargo to specific political change such as the creation of a democratically elected government.

Trump changed U.S. business relations with Venezuela by removing Maduro, leaving its government in place without even announcing plans for free elections.

In Cuba, he could not legally do so without a dramatic shift by Cuban officials, who have refused so far to cooperate.

Cuba's situation is more complicated because the country's economy lacks a private sector. It is dominated by Gaesa, a military conglomerate subject to U.S. sanctions that ‌controls most of the island's top hotels, largest port, top commercial bank and a vast array of supermarkets, gas stations and remittance businesses.

Washington also justified the Venezuela raid by saying Maduro's government was involved in "narcoterrorism." Cuban officials have not faced such charges, and in fact its government says it has been cooperating with the U.S. against drug trafficking.
