Russia has provided Iran with information that can help Tehran strike US military, AP sources say

WASHINGTON (AP) — Russia has provided Iran with information that could help Tehran strike American warships, aircraft and other assets in the region, according to two officials familiar with U.S. intelligence on the matter.

Associated Press

The officials, who were not authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity, cautioned that the U.S. intelligence has not uncovered that Russia is directing Iran on what to do with the information as theU.S. and Israel continue their bombardmentand Iran fires retaliatory salvos at American assets and allies in the Persian Gulf.

Still, it's the first indication that Moscow has sought to get involved in the war that the U.S. and Israel launched on Iran a week ago. Russia is in the rare club of countries that maintains friendly relations with Tehran, which has faced years of isolation over its nuclear program and its support of proxy groups that have wreaked havoc in the Middle East, including Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis.

Trump on Friday evening berated a reporter for raising the matter when he opened the floor to questions from the media at the end of a White House meeting abouthow paying student-athletes has recalibrated college sports.

"I have a lot of respect for you, you've always been very nice to me," Trump said to Peter Doocy, the Fox News reporter. "What a stupid question that is to be asking at this time. We're talking about something else."

White House officials downplayed the reports, but did not deny that Russia was sharing intelligence with Iran about U.S. targets in the region. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Friday told reporters that "it clearly is not making any difference with respect to the military operations in Iran because we are completely decimating them."

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a CBS' "60 Minutes" interview on Friday said the U.S. is "tracking everything" and factoring it into battle plans, when asked about the reports Russia was aiding Iran.

"The American people can rest assured their commander in chief is well aware of who's talking to who," he said. "And anything that shouldn't be happening, whether it's in public or back-channeled, is being confronted and confronted strongly."

Leavitt declined to say if Trump had spoken to RussianPresident Vladimir Putinabout the reported intelligence sharing or whether he believed Russia should face repercussions, saying she would let the president speak to that himself.

Asked whether Russia would go beyond political support and offer military assistance to Iran, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there has been no such request from Tehran.

"We are in dialogue with the Iranian side, with representatives of the Iranian leadership, and will certainly continue this dialogue," he said Friday.

Pushed on whether Moscow has provided any military or intelligence assistance to Tehran since the Iran war's start, he refrained from comment.

Russia has tightened its relationship with Iran as it looked for badly needed missiles and drones to utilize in itsfour-year war against Ukraine.

The Biden administration declassified intelligence findings that showed Iran supplies Moscow with attack drones and has assisted the Kremlin with building a drone-manufacturing factory.

The former U.S. administration also accused Iran oftransferring short-range ballistic missilestoRussia for its war in Ukraine.

Details about the U.S. intelligence were first reported by The Washington Post.

Asked whether the revelation had shaken Trump's faith in Putin's ability to cut any peace deal in the Russia-Ukraine war, Leavitt said, "I think the president would say that peace is still an achievable objective with respect to the Russia-Ukraine war."

Meanwhile, Ukrainian PresidentVolodymyr Zelenskyysays the United States and its allies in the Middle East areseeking Ukraine's expertiseincountering Iran's Shahed drones. Tehran has been supplying Russia with Shaheds for its war on Ukraine and are now utilizing them in retaliatory attacks throughout the Gulf.

Zelenskyy says that he's spoken to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait about possible cooperation.

"Ukraine knows how to defend against Shahed drone attacks because our cities have faced them almost every night," said Ukraine's ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna. "When our partners are in need, we are always ready to help."

Trump, who has struggled to fulfill a campaign pledge to end the Russia-Ukraine war, has had an up-and-down relationship with Zelenskyy. He's frequently pressured the Ukrainian leader to heed Russian demands, including that Kyiv concede Ukrainian territory still in its control.

With the Pentagon facing questions about whether the Iran war is depleting U.S. stockpiles, Trump this week grumbled that former President Joe Biden provided billions in high-end weaponry to Ukraine and failed to replenish U.S. reserves.

Associated Press writers Vladimir Isachenkov in Moscow and Michelle L. Price in Washington contributed to this report.

Kenya Floods

George Seda, the police chief inNairobi, said some of the victims were drowned and others were electrocuted. He warned that the death toll may rise as search and rescue operations continue.

Kenya Airways said flights were disrupted, with some diverted to the coastal city of Mombasa, and that disruptions would continue for hours.

The military was deployed to assist emergency rescue services, and the local toll road operator waived fees for an elevated road.

The heavy rain began on Friday and continued overnight, submerging vehicles and forcing motorists in some areas to wade through hip-high water to reach higher ground.

Seda also said that more than 100 vehicles were damaged, with some overturning on the roadside and in parking bays.

Videos of flooded homes and overturned vehicles were shared on social media. Rescue teams pulled out bodies from vehicles that had been washed away.

PresidentWilliam Rutosaid a multiagency team had been deployed to support and relocate those in imminent danger to safer areas as rain continues in the country. He said the government would pay hospital bills for those affected and directed that relief food be distributed to affected families.

A military rescue unit was deployed overnight to support emergency services as Kenya Red Cross response units struggled to reach people in need.

Kenya Red Cross Secretary-General Ahmed Idris said search and rescue teams were working tirelessly to assist those stranded.

"We are severely limited by the traffic and the situation on what used to be roads. We are doing our best to reach those in need," he wrote on X.

Public Service Minister Geoffrey Ruku said he was coordinating national disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. He urged Kenyans to be cautious and prioritize their safety.

Some residents blamed the flooding on clogged drainage systems, stating that city authorities ought to have prepared by ensuring there was functional drainage infrastructure ahead of the rainy season.

One resident, Aisha Bajaber, wrote on X: "The whole city is flooded yet again. How long will officials keep ignoring the lack of drainage?"

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said the government would ensure all blocked drainage systems are cleared.

"Nairobi remains a major regional hub and must be kept clean, safe and well-managed to reflect its standing in Africa," he said.

Kenya has faced heavy rains since late February, which marks the start of the long-rains season.

Previous rain seasons have seen flooding, landslidesand mudslides that have left hundreds of people dead and seen thousands of others displaced.

Knicks rout the Nuggets 142-103 as Denver guard Murray leaves with a sprained ankle

DENVER (AP) — OG Anunoby scored 34 points to power the New York Knicks to a 142-103 win over the Denver Nuggets, wholost All-Star point guard Jamal Murrayto a sprained ankle Friday night just when their starting lineup was back together.

Josh Hart added 18 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 19 points and 17 rebounds as the Knicks kicked off a five-game trip in resounding fashion, their starters taking the fourth quarter off to enjoy the rare rout.

The 39-point home loss tied the Nuggets' record set against Chicago in 1998.

Nikola Jokic led Denver with 38 points but the Nuggets suffered their biggest loss of the season — both on the scoreboard and on the court with Murray's injury.

Aaron Gordon (hamstring) played for the first time since Jan. 23 and Cam Johnson returned from a sprained ankle, giving the Nuggets their original starting lineup for the first time since Nov. 12.

It was short-lived.

Although Gordon quickly gave the crowd something to cheer about when he followed his errant 3-pointer with a rim-rattling dunk as part of Denver's 13-4 start, the Nuggets would miss 17 consecutive 3-pointers before Jokic hit one with his team trailing 92-70 on its way to a 105-80 deficit after three quarters.

And that was Gordon's only basket as he went 1 for 7 in 21 minutes.

And the Nuggets lost their All-Star point guard before halftime.

Murray, who had 45- and 28-point performances earlier this week, had 12 points when he got hurt with 1:05 left in the first half. He took the contact from a driving Anunoby and stepped back on Jokic's right foot. Murray tumbled to the floor in pain, grabbing his left ankle. He was helped to the locker room by teammate Jonas Valanciunas, and didn't return.

During the stoppage, Knicks coach Mike Brown challenged the call on the court of an Anunoby charge. The challenge was successful, so Murray was assessed the blocking foul and Anunoby sank both free throws, giving the Knicks a 65-42 halftime lead.

Murray was an All-Star this season for the first time in his nine-year career.

According toTMZ, the writer and performer died in Denver on Monday, following a heart attack. Hibbert's death comes just three months after the passing of one of hisPulp Fictionscene partners,Peter Greene.

Born in Fleetwood, England, Hibbert broke into the industry as a writer onLate Night With David Letterman. He'd then go on to serve the same position onBoy Meets WorldandMad TV, and he also helped pen the script forIt's Pat, a film based on the breakoutSaturday Night Livecharacter of his then-wife, Julia Sweeney.

But Hibbert's most recognized performance was one that never revealed his face. In Quentin Tarantino's 1994 masterpiecePulp Fiction, boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) is running from feared crime boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), when he seeks shelter in a pawn shop. But the owner, Maynard (Duane Whitaker), holds the two men at gunpoint and ties them up in his basement, where Maynard and his pal Zed (Peter Greene) are keeping "The Gimp," a man held in a small box and dressed in leather bondage, including a mask that doesn't allow him to speak. The Gimp is tied up and left to watch over Butch as Maynard and Zed take Marsellus to the other room to sexually assault him, but Butch manages to get free and punch the Gimp, who unsuccessfully tries to yell to get his captors' attention.

Not much information was ever given about the character and how he ended up in that situation, until Tarantino peeled back a curtain in 2020. "It doesn't quite play this way in the movie, but, in my mind when I wrote it, the Gimp's dead,"he revealed to Empire. "Butch knocked him out and then, when he passed out, he hung himself. In terms of backstory, he was a hitchhiker or somebody that they picked up seven years ago, and they trained him so he's the perfect victim."

For his part, Hibbert embraced the bonkers role and the legacy that came with it — even if it didn't prove to be life-changing. "I never made a big deal of it,"he told Vulturein 2014. "I wish I had, but I've never figured out a way to monetize it or make it a thing. I've never sent out Christmas cards with the Gimp or anything. And whatever else I've done before or will do in show business, I don't think I'll ever have a cooler credit than that. I love the fact that I did that."

In reversal, Florida Bar says it is not investigating Trump loyalist Lindsey Halligan

The Florida Bar said Friday it is not investigating former Justice Department attorneyLindsey Halligan, walking back an earlier statement saying aprobe was underway.

In early February, a Florida Bar official responded to a request for a probe into the Trump loyalist over her time in the administration by writing, "We already have an investigation pending."

A day after NBC News and other outlets reported on the letter Thursday, the Florida Bar said that while there is a "monitoring file," there is no investigation into Halligan.

"In response to an inquiry from a complainant, The Florida Bar wrote a letter to the complainant erroneously stating that there is a pending Bar investigation of member Lindsey Halligan," a Florida Bar spokeswoman said in a statement Friday. "There is no such pending Bar investigation of Lindsay Halligan."

The bar said it received a complaint against Halligan and then followed what it called standard practice by "monitoring the ongoing legal proceedings underlying the complaint."

The complaint to the Florida Bar came from the Campaign for Accountability, a nonprofit watchdog group. The group said that by falsely claiming to be a U.S. attorney, Halligan committed a variety of ethical violations.

Halligan, who had no prosecutorial experience before leadingunsuccessful casesagainst former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, left her roleas interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in January after a judge said shewas "masquerading" as the district's top federal prosecutor.

The Campaign for Accountabilityfiled complaintswith both the Florida and the Virginia bars in November, and itfollowed upwith the Florida Bar last month.

Attorney General Pam Bondi, who previously served as Florida's attorney general, criticized the earlier news reports of an investigation.

"The Florida Bar 'investigation' of Lindsey Halligan is totally fake news," she said Fridayin a post on X. "Lindsey not only did nothing wrong — she did a great job!"

Asked for comment on the Florida Bar's reversal, Halligan responded to NBC News Friday by writing, "Where's my apology?"

She also sent a screenshot of aTrump post on Truth Socialwhere he reposted Bondi's defense of Halligan.

Big Ten wrestling tournament bracket, results, standings, highlights from Day 1

Some of the best wrestlers throughout the NCAA will convene at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania this weekend for theBig Ten wrestling tournament.

USA TODAY Sports

This year, the Big Ten has introduced a new preliminary seeding system that ranks 14 starters in all 10 weight classes. Penn State, which has won the last three Big Ten wrestling tournament championships, leads all schools with six No. 1 seeds, though four different schools feature a No. 1 seed.

Penn State's Luke Lilledahl (125 pounds), Marcus Blaze (133), Shayne Van Ness (149), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Rocco Welsh (184) and Josh Barr (197) all enter as No. 1 seeds in their respective classes. Elsewhere, Nebraska's Antrell Taylor (157) and Christopher Minto (174) are No. 1 seeds, while Ohio State's Jesse Mendez (141) and Michigan's Taye Ghadiali (285) round out top seeds.

The seeding system isnot without its criticisms, however, as undefeated 174-pounder Levi Haines of Penn State is the No. 2 wrestler behind Nebraska's Minto, whom he defeated in February. Elsewhere, No. 1-ranked senior Lucas Byrd of Illinois, the defending national champ, is the No. 2 seed behind Blaze, an undefeated freshman.
