Fury dominates Makhmudov in latest comeback and calls out Joshua

LONDON (AP) — Tyson Fury showed little rust in dominating Arslanbek Makhmudov for a unanimous decision victory Saturday and immediately challenged a ringside Anthony Joshua to fight him next.

Associated Press

“Let's give the fight fans what they want,” Fury bellowed after going 12 rounds in his latest comeback.

A long-awaited Fury-Joshua heavyweight showdown would be one of the biggest fights in British boxing history.

Joshua sat ringside and appeared to be using his phone to film portions of the fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He didn't commit to anything when Fury (35-2-1) yelled into theNetflixmicrophone: “Do you accept my challenge?”

Joshua said, “I'll punch you up,” and “I’m the landlord. You work for me.”

As for Saturday's fight, the self-described “Gypsy King" had a fairly slow start but otherwise dictated the pace with his left jab and in later rounds landed frequent lead uppercuts on Makhmudov (21-3). Two judges scored it 120-108 and the other 119-109.

The 36-year-old Joshua, a former world champion, later told Netflix in an interview: “Contracts will be sent over. You’ll probably see us in the ring.”

He noted he's still “sorting some things out” following the death of two close friends in afatal car accident in Nigeria. Joshua was a passenger in the vehicle.

The 37-year-old Fury, the former two-time heavyweight champion, called it quits shortly afterlosing to Oleksandr Usykin December 2024 for a second time — his only two professional defeats.

“If AJ don't want it, then lets get Usyk in the trilogy,” Fury said at Saturday's post-fight press conference.

At Fury's request, his ring walk was preceded by a tribute tothe late Ricky Hatton, the Manchester native and former world champion who died last year at age 46.

The message “RIP Ricky” was stitched on the back of Fury's shorts.

Benn handles Prograis

Conor Benn earned a 10-round unanimous decision over Regis Prograis to bolster his case for a title shot againstWBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia.

Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) took command in the middle rounds with punishing body shots against 37-year-old Prograis (30-4, 24 KOs), a former two-time world champion at super lightweight (140 lbs).

Saturday's bout was at a catchweight of 150 lbs.

All three judges scored it 98-92 for the 29-year-old Briton, who sustained cuts over both eyes from head clashes.

Nathan Lane Says “Death of a Salesman” Revival ‘Could Be My Farewell to Broadway’

NEED TO KNOW

  • The demanding role requires Lane to perform nearly three hours nightly, navigating intense emotions and minimal breaks

  • Lane, 70, hinted this production could mark his farewell to Broadway after more than 40 years on stage

Nathan Laneis taking on one of theater’s most demanding roles, and he’s not ruling out that it could be his last.

The three-time Tony Award-winning stage icon, 70, is currently starring as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’sDeath of a Salesman, a role he toldThe Guardianhe spent decades preparing to feel ready to tackle.

“It’s taken this long to feel worthy of doing it,” Lane said in the interview about the drama, published on Wednesday, April 8. “I’m doing eight shows a week and I haven’t keeled over.”

That grind, he admits, is no small feat. “This eight-a-week stuff, it’s crazy,” Lane shared. “A play like this takes a toll and costs you to do it. It’s also the reason you want to do it.”

The role’s intensity is part of its legend.

In Miller’s 1949 classic, Willy Loman is a struggling traveling salesman unraveling under the weight of his own expectations, chasing an American dream that no longer fits. The character is widely considered one of the most demanding in theater, requiring actors to remain onstage for most of the nearly three-hour play while navigating emotional collapse, memory and delusion in real time.

That grueling performance leaves little room to breathe. “It’s hard to explain unless you’re doing it," Lane said. "Nobody understands."

Even his intermission offers little relief.

“It’s, like, 10 minutes,” he said. “I pee, I have a cup of tea, I put the jacket back on and I go out and fight my way to the death.”

Over the years, Willy Loman has been defined by towering performances, beginning with Lee J. Cobb, who originated the role, and later interpretations by actors includingDustin Hoffman,Brian DennehyandPhilip Seymour Hoffman.

Lane, for his part, is well aware of that legacy, referencing “Cobb’s wounded lion, Dustin’s tiny tyrant” and “Dennehy’s bipolar mountain of a man” when considering how others have approached the character.

Each performance has reshaped Willy Loman — a man who must balance charm, denial and quiet desperation, often all within the same scene.

The play also holds deep personal significance for Lane, who recalls being drawn to it as a child with after a 1966 televised broadcast of Cobb's performance.

“Other children were watchingGilligan’s Islandand I was more drawn to Miller’s indictment of capitalism,” he joked.

Lane made his Broadway debut in the 1982 production ofPresent Laughterand has since built one of the stage’s most celebrated careers. Equally revered for his comedic brilliance and dramatic range — from his scene-stealing performance as Max Bialystock inThe Producersto his haunting Roy Cohn inAngels in America— he has remained a defining presence in American theater, with a career that continues to evolve even now.

But more than four decades in his stage career, Lane is unclear about what comes next — or whether there is a next chapter on stage at all.

“Oh, Jesus, who the hell knows?” he toldThe Guardian. “This could be my farewell to Broadway.”

Russia's Supreme Court on Thursday effectively criminalized the activities of the Nobel Peace Prize-winningrights group Memorial, the latest step in an unrelenting crackdown on dissent and civil society organizations in the country amidits war in Ukraine.

Russia Crackdown

Separately, police in Moscow raided the offices of the prominent independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, whose chief editor Dmitry Muratov was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2021. The newspaper said its lawyers were not allowed inside the office.

The ruling against the human rights group followed a closed hearing on a petition from the Justice Ministry to designate what it called “the Memorial international civic movement” as extremist and ban its activities in Russia.

Memorial said in a statement issued earlier in the day that there is no such entity but that the ruling still “would allow the authorities to crack down on any Memorial projects, their participants and supporters.”

A long history of human rights activism

Memorial is one of the oldest and the most renowned Russian human rights organizations. It was awarded the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, less than a year after President Vladimir Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine, alongsideBelarusian activist Ales Bialiatski, who was imprisoned at the time, and the Ukrainian organization Center for Civil Liberties.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee condemned the actions against the group, calling them “an affront to the fundamental values of human dignity and freedom of expression" and urged Russia to “cease all harassment of Memorial and its members.”

Amnesty International's Eastern Europe and Central Asia deputy regional director Denis Krivosheev said in a statement that the court ruling was targeting not just Memorial but “criminalizing human rights work itself.”

Memorial was founded in the late 1980s to ensure that the victims of the Soviet Union's political repression would be remembered, and grew to a network of smaller organizations both in Russia and abroad.

The group had been declared a “foreign agent,” a designation that brought additional government scrutiny and carried strong pejorative connotations, and over the years was ordered to pay massive fines for alleged violations of the ”foreign agent” law. Russian courts ordered its two main entities — the human rights center and the International Memorial — to shut down in December 2021.

Undeterred, the group continued to operate. In 2023, its members founded an international Memorial association in Geneva. Earlier this year, that association was banned in Russia as “undesirable,” a label that exposes anyone involved with it to prosecution.

In February 2024, Memorial's co-chair Oleg Orlov was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for speaking out against the war in Ukraine. He was released in a massive East-West prisoner exchange in August 2024 along with other imprisoned dissidents.

Increasing pressure on Memorial

An extremist designation puts even more pressure on the group, as involvement with extremist activities is a criminal offense in Russia punishable by prison terms.

Jan Raczynski, chair of the International Memorial that was forced to shut down in 2021, told The Associated Press that he was surprised and bewildered to learn from the news about the Justice Ministry's petition.

He said Memorial has been well-known for many years on par with “perestroika" and “glasnost” — Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s policies of political reform and openness. Raczynski noted that Soviet physicist and human rights advocate Andrei Sakharov, a 1975 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was its first chairman.

Raczynski likened the Supreme Court's closed hearing to the repressions studied by the group.

“This is very similar to what we’ve been doing for almost 40 years now, these closed trials of people, in absentia, usually without a defense," he said, adding that it was difficult to predict what would happen next.

"I just know that for many hundreds of thousands of people in Russia, this is a very anxious time, because Memorial has helped a lot of people, and now they don’t understand what is happening,” Razcynski said.

He denounced allegations that Memorial was extremist, saying the group has always stood against violence, and vowed that its work will continue “one way or another.”

The Russian state news agency Tass cited the Supreme Court’s press service as saying Memorial’s activities “are clearly anti-Russian in nature, aimed at destroying the fundamental foundations of Russian statehood, violating territorial integrity, and eroding historical, cultural, spiritual, and moral values.”

Memorial said the case against the group “is yet another attempt to intimidate all dissent in the country and silence civil society" that will not succeed.

“Memorial and other civil society organizations, which are being destroyed in Russia, will continue their work abroad,” it said. “Memorial will outlive the Putin regime and will be able to openly return to Russia.”

A criminal case reported against Novaya Gazeta

After news emerged about the police raid against Novaya Gazeta, the Russian news agency Interfax, citing law enforcement officials, reported that a criminal case has been launched against the renowned newspaper on charges of illegal collection and use of personal data.

Tass cited law enforcement as saying the raid was connected to a case against Novaya Gazeta journalist Oleg Roldugin, who also co-founded another independent Russian newspaper, Sobesednik. Novaya Gazeta on social media said it couldn't confirm or deny whether this is the case, but noted that Roldugin's home also was raided, he has been taken in for questioning, and a lawyer was later allowed to see him.

The newspaperhas faced growing pressuresince Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Its website has been blocked in Russia, its media license was revoked in 2022, and many of its journalists fled abroad and regrouped in a separate publication called Novaya Gazeta Europe. That publication has been banned in Russia as “undesirable.”

Muratov, Novaya Gazeta's longtime editor who still lives in Russia, shared the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize with Maria Ressa, a journalist from the Philippines. He was declared a “foreign agent” by Russian authorities.

The newspaper was itself born from the legacy of Gorbachev's Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. He used part of his prize money to fund what later became Novaya Gazeta, which launched in 1993.

Steelers 7-round mock draft: Could Pittsburgh land Garrett Nussmeier?

ThePittsburgh Steelerswill enterthe 2026 NFL Draftwith some significant questions, but they will have plenty of opportunities to answer them.

USA TODAY Sports

The Steelers are set to have a league-high 12 selections in this year's draft. That will include five top-100 selections, a number buoyed by the team's three third-round picks.

Pittsburgh's bevy of draft assets will allow it not only to plug its major holes along the offensive line and at receiver, but also to add some young talent to serve as eventual successors to its veteran defensive talents.

Of course, the team will also consider drafting a quarterback. The expectation remains thatAaron Rodgerswill return for one more season, but if he doesn't re-sign, adding a top signal-caller to challengeWill Howardfor the starting job will quickly become the team's top priority.

Here's a look at how the Steelers could use all 12 of their selections in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.

Pittsburgh Steelers 7-round mock draft

Round 1, Pick 21: OT Kadyn Proctor, Alabama

Broderick Joneshasn't panned out as the Steelers hoped since they selected him in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The 6-5. 311-pound blocker graded 66th among 84 qualified tackles last season, perPro Football Focus, after committing six penalties and allowing one sack across 632 snaps last season.

Proctor would be a high-upside replacement for Jones, who is entering the final year of his contract in 2026. The 20-year-old has great movement skills and a massive 6-7, 352-pound frame that could allow him to blossom into a formidable left tackle.

Round 2, Pick 53: WR Zachariah Branch, Georgia

The Steelers traded for Michael Pittman Jr., who will pencil in as a versatile No. 2 receiver across fromDK Metcalf, but adding a quick separator and field-stretching deep threat would be sensible.

Branch is undersized at 5-10, 180 pounds, but he is an explosive playmaker who should be a big-play threat out of the slot and as a kick returner. Rodgers would love being able to hit the Georgia product with quick screens and slants – should he return to the Steelers for another season.

Round 3, Pick 76: DT Darrell Jackson Jr., Florida State

Cameron Heywardis still playing at an All-Pro level, but it's fair to wonder just how much longer the soon-to-be 37-year-old will be able to do that.Adding a successor to him and a long-term partner forDerrick Harmonshould be high on Pittsburgh's list of priorities during the draft.

Jackson has great size at 6-6, 315 pounds with a huge wingspan and hands, but needs to hone his technique to find consistent success at the next level. Doing so behind Heyward during his rookie season could be an ideal option for both parties.

Round 3, Pick 85: LB Deontae Lawson, Alabama

Patrick Queenendured a difficult 2025 season, as the Steelers' top linebacker missed 31 tackles and allowed a 115.5 passer rating in coverage, perPro Football Focus. Pittsburgh may be willing to write that off as a one-year blip on the radar, but adding insurance behind the 26-year-old as he enters the final year of his contract would be wise.

Lawson is a very good sideline-to-sideline athlete who could emerge as a star if he can improve his play recognition and instincts. He was a three-year starter at Alabama and a two-time team captain, traits the Steelers would certainly value while considering him as a mid-round selection.

Round 3, Pick 99: QB Garrett Nussmeier, LSU

Rodgers may return to the Steelers for the 2026 NFL season, but if he does, it will likely be the 42-year-old's last season. With that in mind, Pittsburgh could consider adding another young quarterback to join Howard - a 2025 sixth-round pick - behind Rodgers.

Nussmeier has the tools needed to develop into a starter, as he has an NFL-caliber arm and solid mobility. He also comes with a gunslinger mentality that saw him put the ball in harm's way a bit too often during his time at LSU.

If Nussmeier can clean up that issue and get healthy after being hampered by a core injury in his final collegiate season, he should find success in the NFL. Learning behind and from Rodgers could go a long way toward helping Nussmeier – who is the son of New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier – reach his full potential.

NFL COMBINE QB GRADES:Ty Simpson, Garrett Nussmeier improve NFL draft stock

Round 4, Pick 121: G Billy Schrauth, Notre Dame

The Steelers lostIsaac Seumaloto the Arizona Cardinals in free agency. They may be willing to letSpencer AndersonandBrock Hoffmanbattle to replace him, but adding a mid-round pick to join the competition should also be on the table.

Schrauth (6-5, 310 pounds) was a two-year starter and team captain at Notre Dame. He has good play strength and experience at both guard spots, two factors that could help him quickly become a solid starter at the NFL level.

Round 4, Pick 135: RB Nicholas Singleton, Penn State

Kenneth Gainwellsigned with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after leading the Steelers with 73 receptions in 2025. Pittsburgh signedRico Dowdleto help replace Gainwell, but it would still be wise for the team to add another pass-catching option to join Dowdle,Jaylen Warrenand 2025 third-round pickKaleb Johnsonin the team's backfield rotation.

Singleton was a prolific pass-catcher at Penn State, racking up 102 receptions for 987 yards and nine touchdowns across four seasons with the Nittany Lions. He also posted two 1,000-yard seasons as a rusher, so his production, along with his size (6-0, 219 pounds) and explosiveness, could make him a fun addition to Mike McCarthy's roster.

Round 5, Pick 161: CB Ephesians Prysock, Washington

Prysock is another athletic player the Steelers could target for depth purposes. The 6-3, 196-pound cornerback performed well at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, blazing the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds while logging a 39-inch vertical jump and a 10-4 broad jump.

Prysock also posted solid production across his four college seasons at Arizona and Washington, totaling 20 pass defenses and two interceptions. He would be an ideal developmental backup for the Steelers.

Round 6, Pick 216: WR J. Michael Sturdivant, Florida

Sturdivant never quite lived up to the potential he displayed at California in 2022, when he posted 65 catches for 755 yards and seven touchdowns. That said, he has excellent athleticism for his 6-3, 207-pound frame and could be molded into a quality outside receiver in time at the NFL level.

Double-dipping at receiver wouldn't be a surprising move for Pittsburgh, as its depth beyond Metcalf and Pittman is shaky. Sturdivant is a much different receiver than the Steelers' second-round pick in this mock, Branch, and would be a quality understudy for Metcalf.

Round 7, Pick 224: S Robert Spears-Jennings, Oklahoma

Spears-Jennings turned heads by blazing the 40-yard dash in 4.32 seconds at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. That speed could help make him a big-time asset on special teams early in his career as he continues to hone the skills he developed at safety across his two seasons as a starter at Oklahoma.

Round 7, Pick 230: TE Matthew Hibner, SMU

The Steelers releasedJonnu Smith, who was part of Pittsburgh's three-headed rotation at tight end, ahead of free agency. They also lost their H-back – a role that combines the responsibilities of a tight end and full back –Connor Heywardto the Las Vegas Raiders and could stand to add a replacement for his well-rounded skill set.

Hibner (6-4, 251 pounds) logged 55 catches for 804 yards and eight touchdowns during his two seasons at SMU. He's on the older side at 24, but the Steelers won't mind if he can carve out a role as a third-string tight end and H-back.

Round 7, Pick 237: DT Nick Barrett, South Carolina

Keeanu Bentonis a free agent after the 2026 NFL season. The Steelers would probably like to keep him, but adding organizational depth at nose tackle would provide them with insurance in case they can't.

Barrett is a 6-3, 312-pound space eater who could be a solid practice squad stash behind Benton andYahya Black.
