Why you may see Japanese soccer fans cleaning up the stadium after World Cup games

TOKYO (AP) — If there's one country guaranteed to clean up at theWorld Cup, it's Japan.

WCup Japan Cleans Up Soccer

Scenes of Japanesesoccerfans sweeping stadiums and picking up trash after a match first drew public attention in France in 1998 — Japan's first appearance in the World Cup.

The tradition has continued every four years. It happened at theWorld Cup in Qatarin 2022, and it's certain to continue when Japan opens play in June with group games in Arlington, Texas, and Monterrey, Mexico.

The cleanup astonishes non-Japanese who might be accustomed to leaving stadiums and stepping over half-eaten food, shredded paper wrappers, and cups — empty or with liquid dribbling out.

At the World Cup in Russia in 2018, Japanese players famously cleaned the dressing room after a loss and left a thank-you note in Russian. In 2022, fans left thank-you notes on rubbish bags written in Arabic, English and Japanese.

A Japanese phrase explains why

It's not that complicated. Beginning in elementary school, students are socialized to behave this way — in the classroom, in the school yard or on a playing field.

“Japanese sports fans at world events who clean up the stadium are behaving much the same way they did when they learned how to enjoy sports as school boys and girls,” Koichi Nakano, who teaches politics and history at Sophia University, told The Associated Press.

There is a phrase in Japanese that explains it.

“Tatsu tori ato wo nigosazu.”

The literal translation is: “A bird leaves nothing behind.”

Rendered in English the message is: “Return it the way you found it.”

Many Japanese elementary schools don’t have janitors, so the clean-up work is left to students. Office workers often dedicate time to sprucing up their areas.

Also, there are relatively few trash containers in public spaces in Japan, so people take their waste home with them. This keeps the sidewalks cleaner, saves the cost of emptying trash cans, and keeps away vermin.

“The way most ordinary soccer fans experience soccer at school is no different from other sports, and the emphasis is not just on physical education but also on moral education as well,” Nakano added.

Collective vs. the individual

Raised in Germany, Barbara Holthus is the deputy director of the German Institute for Japanese Studies in Tokyo. A sociologist, she agrees it's prudent not to put Japanese on a pedestal. Japan, like any country, has its own challenges and shortcomings.

“An academically sound explanation is that people in Japan just happen to be socialized different,” she told The AP. “If you grew up with a certain way of how things are being done, you apply that to even cleaning up a stadium afterwards.”

At work here is also the Japanese concept of “meiwaku,” which implies not causing trouble or annoying others. From the Japanese point of view, leaving rubbish piled up in a stadium would be a bother to others.

Japan is a relatively crowded place, and greater Tokyo alone has about 35 million people, almost the population of the entire state of California. People need to get along.

“Japanese learn early on that you don't want to inconvenience other people,” Holthus said.

She said the focus is often on the collective, compared with the West where the emphasis is on the individual and individual rights.

“You don’t want to bother people. It goes to all areas of life in Japan,” Holthus added. “We are raised (in the West) that we don’t have to clean up after ourselves in public spaces because there is going to be some kind of public service doing that.”

And because Japanese people have received widespread praise for the clean-up, the behavior has been reinforced.

“Now that the media has latched onto the story and lavished praise on Japanese fans, they have made it a point of pride to display those values and norms,” Jeff Kingston, who teaches history at Temple University in Japan, wrote in an email.

A Japanese tradition

The clean-up tradition is not limited to soccer's marquee tournament. The same thing happened last year at the Under-20 World Cup in Chile as Japanese fans cleaned up after a match. And even more recently last month at Wembley Stadium in London where Japan defeated England 1-0 in an international friendly.

“It’s one of our traditions,” said Toshi Yoshizawa, who was leading the cleanup in Chile. “We grew up with the teaching that we should leave a place cleaner than when we arrived.”

William Kelly, an emeritus professor of anthropology at Yale University and a specialist on Japan, said the tradition is linked to soccer more than other sports. He speculated it's tied to the establishment of Japan's professional football league more than 30 years ago.

“It (the J-League) was trying to distinguish itself from baseball by emphasizing teams’ community embeddedness and commitment,” Kelly wrote in an email. “Soccer fans felt, and feel, more a part of the club and its stadium.”

Supreme Court considers lawfulness of broad police requests for cell phone location data

WASHINGTON —At 4:50 p.m. on May 20, 2019, an armed man holding a cell phone walked into the Midlothian, Virginia, branch of the Call Federal Credit Union and handed a note to a teller demanding cash.

At one point brandishing the gun, the man ordered the manager to open the safe. He walked out with $195,000.

Police officers were initially stumped when trying to figure out the identity of the robber, setting off a chain of events that led to a Supreme Court hearing on Monday, the latest in a series of cases on how new technology interacts with the Constitution's protection of individual rights.

The detective in charge was able to identify Okello Chatrie as the prime suspect by obtaining data from Google about cell phone users in the vicinity of the bank at the time of the crime.

A federal judge had approved what is known as a "geofence warrant" that allows police officers to seek such information even when they do not have a specific suspect in mind.

Google initially identified 19 users, but the officer ultimately narrowed his search down to Chatrie, whose phone had its Google "Location History" setting switched on. This feature is used for apps such as Google Maps. The data showed he was in or near the location in question ten minutes before the robbery and then departed soon after.

After further investigation, Chatrie ultimately pleaded guilty to federal charges of armed robbery and brandishing a firearm, and he was sentenced to almost 12 years in prison. But he reserved the right to appeal on the issue now before the Supreme Court: Did the broad request to Google violate his right to be free from unlawful searches and seizures under the Constitution's Fourth Amendment?

The Supreme Court has, in several previous cases, had to deal with similar questions about how the Fourth Amendment applies to new technology, ranging fromwiretapsandthermal imagingtoGPS tracking devices. In a similar case, the courtruled in 2017that warrants are required to obtain location information derived from data picked up from cell phone towers.

The Chatrie case involves a broader, open-ended search, which privacy advocates refer to as a dragnet that pulls in information from sometimes hundreds of innocent people. A geofence warrant was infamously used to identify supporters of President Donald Trump who broke into the Capitol on Jan 6, 2021.

"It's the stuff authoritarian nightmares are made of," Jake Karr, a lawyer at the Knight First Amendment Institute, said in an interview.

The Trump administration, represented by Solicitor General D. John Sauer, is defending the practice, arguing that no search took place at all, meaning a warrant is not required. That is despite the fact that officers did have one in Chatrie's case.

If the court were to find that geofence searches do not require a warrant, it would open the door to government abuse that could infringe upon free speech rights by, for example, targeting protesters, Karr added.

The Justice Department argues, among other things, that people do not have an expectation of privacy when it comes to such information, in part because Chatrie voluntarily shared it with Google.

Even assuming a warrant is required, the one issued in Chatrie's case was lawful because law enforcement had "probable cause to believe that Google had information that would help identify the cellphone-using robber," Sauer wrote in court papers.

Although the case could have broad ramifications in the law, Google has since changed its storage policies. Now, location history is stored on an individual's device, not by Google itself on its servers. That means the company "can no longer respond to geofence warrants based on Location History data," its lawyers said in a brief filed in the case.

Cortes' 106.3 mph liner off the glove of Evan Carter on the warning track in center field scored Tyler Soderstrom and Brent Rooker, who drew consecutive two-out walks off Kumar Rocker.

Athletics starter J.T. Ginn exited due to right arm soreness with one out in the fourth and a 2-0 lead.Rooker was back in the lineupin the cleanup spot as the designated hitter after missing 14 games with a right oblique strain. The two-time All-Star went 0 for 4.

Cortes had three of the Athletics' 10 hits as each team stranded 11 runners and went a combined 2 of 22 with runners in scoring position.

Jacob Lopez was the second reliever after Ginn and gave up the first Texas run in the sixth. Josh Jung doubled and scored when Lopez's throw got past first baseman Nick Kurtz on Evan Carter's half-swing sacrifice bunt.

The left-hander then walked Jake Burger and was replaced by Sterner, who gave up a bunt single to Josh Smith to load the bases.

Sterner (1-2) struck out Danny Jansen and Sam Haggerty before leadoff man Brandon Nimmo flied out to center, drawing several fist pumps from the right-hander as he walked to the dugout.

Jack Perkins, the sixth pitcher for the Athletics, struck out one in a perfect ninth for his second save in two chances.

Rocker (1-2) gave up six hits and two runs with three strikeouts in six innings.

Nick Kurtz's intentional walk in the ninth gave him an Athletics franchise record with at least one walk in 16 consecutive games. It's the longest streak in the majors since Barry Bonds walked in 17 straight games for San Francisco in 2007.

The Athletics have yet to announce their starter opposite Kansas City's Kris Bubic (2-1, 4.08 ERA) in the opener of a three-game series at home Tuesday.

Texas' Jack Leiter (1-1, 4.97) is scheduled to take the mound Monday at home against Max Fried (3-1, 2.40) to kickoff a three-game series with the Yankees.

“Despite these referees, we’re still leading 1-0,” Galatasaray posted in Turkish on its official X account during what would be a 3-0 win in the Istanbul derby Sunday.

“We see what you’re doing, your plans, the evil inside you,” the club wrote, adding on its English language account: “Don’t let the score distract you from the fact that TWO clear penalties for Galatasaray have been ignored by the referee and the VAR room in the first half.”

The in-game criticism came days after Galatasaray said it was suspending relations with the Turkish Football Federation in a dispute about picking referees for games.

The Gala-Fener rivalry is one of the most intense in world soccer though it has been one-sided on the field in recent years.

Sunday's victory left Galatasaray seven points clear with three rounds left as it seeks a fourth straight league title. Fenerbahce has not been champion since 2014.

Galatasaray took the lead on Nigeria striker Victor Osimen’s goal in the 40th minute — after Fenerbahce missed a penalty — and then got its own spot kick in the second half. Barış Alper Yılmaz scored that in the 67th and Lucas Torreira added a third in the 83rd.

Fenerbache goalkeeper Ederson was sent off when the score was 1-0.

Complaints about referees and their integrity are common in the Turkish Super League.

Jose Mourinho, as Fenerbahce coachlast season, was banned for four games by the federation for criticizing match officials.

MLB power rankings: Phillies can't stop the bleeding as NL East hole grows

Chuckle at theNew York Mets, if that's your thing. Gawk at the five-car pileup that is theBoston Red Soxorganization, which decided to kneecap its paragon of stability.

USA TODAY Sports

Yet if you're looking for the messiest big-market failure as April draws to a close, thePhiladelphia Philliesmight fill the bill.

They didn't lose a dozen games in a row, like the Mets, just 10. Yet a one-night reprieve gave way to perhaps their most discouraging setback yet - a 6-2 loss to the front-running Atlanta Braves in which starter Aaron Nola was very bad and the lineup utterly powerless to counteract lefty Chris Sale.

Nola has a $172 million guaranteed deal and they can't simply make his 6.03 ERA go awaylike they did Taijuan Walker. And in a season of league-wide parity, they now own the biggest deficit in the major leagues - 10 ½ games behind the Braves - and dropped another 10 spots in USA TODAY Sports' power rankings.

A look at our updated rankings:

1.Los Angeles Dodgers(-)

2.New York Yankees(+1)

  • Luis Gil was sent to the minors, but Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón are on the comeback trail.

3. Atlanta Braves (+1)

  • Only the 1997 team can top their 20-9 record at this stage.

4.San Diego Padres(-2)

  • Lucas Giolito finally finds a home in diminished Padres rotation.

5.Chicago Cubs(+6)

  • Ten-game win streak halted by Dodgers, who did not need any special rules to do so.

6.Cincinnati Reds(-)

  • Losing Eugenio Suárez to the IL hurts less when Sal Stewart remains unstoppable.

7.Pittsburgh Pirates(-)

  • Konnor Griffin hits first homer on night Paul Skenes threatens to throw perfect game. Exciting times!

8. Detroit Tigers (+1)

  • Spencer Torkelson homers in five straight games, first Tiger to do so since legendary Marcus Thames in 2008.

9. Tampa Bay Rays (+6)

  • Junior Caminero's two-homer night included drives of 435, 450 feet.

10.Arizona Diamondbacks(-)

  • Very quietly, Mike Soroka off to 4-0, 2.60 ERA start.

11.Milwaukee Brewers(-6)

  • In a three-way tie for last with 19 homers.

12. Cleveland Guardians (-4)

  • Angel Martínez's first career multi-homer game comes with a pair of blasts off Max Scherzer.

13.Seattle Mariners(-)

  • Kade Anderson watch: One earned run, 30 strikeouts in 18 ⅔ innings at Class AA.

14.Miami Marlins(-)

  • Win every other day and it's real easy to build big leads over the Phillies and Mets.

15. Texas Rangers (+1)

  • Don't look now, but Josh Jung has a .920 OPS.

16. Toronto Blue Jays (+1)

  • Pitching the eighth inning means Jeff Hoffman loses his light show intro.

17. New York Mets (+1)

  • Move up a spot only because the Phillies are more embarrassing.

18. Baltimore Orioles (+1)

  • Kyle Bradish averaging nearly three walks per start.

19. Athletics (+1)

  • Have won four consecutive series away from Yolo County.

20.St. Louis Cardinals

  • Outfield prospect Joshua Baez has six homers at Class AAA.

21. Los Angeles Angels (-)

  • Catcher Logan O'Hoppe suffers wrist fracture.

22. Philadelphia Phillies (-10)

  • What if they're simply this bad?

23. Boston Red Sox (-1)

  • Alex Cora their first manager to get fired during the season since Jimy Williams in 2001.

24. Minnesota Twins (-)

  • Have lost nine of 10, perhaps an inevitable bit of regression.

25. San Francisco Giants (-)

  • Daniel Susac's injury puts onus on Patrick Bailey to hit, once again.

26. Washington Nationals (+1)

  • Foster Griffin tosses seven shutout innings and looks more and more like a real find.

27. Houston Astros (-1)

  • Christian Walker's revival (seven homers) one of the few bright spots.

28. Kansas City Royals (-)

  • It took more than 100 at-bats, but Bobby Witt has himself a home run.

29. Colorado Rockies (-)

  • Overworked bullpen prompts Chase Dollander's first start of season - and he pitches seven shutout innings.

30.Chicago White Sox (-)

  • Noah Schultz strikes out eight in third major league start..

Wave remains atop the NWSL standings with a 3-2 road win over the Summit

The San Diego Wave scored three second-half goals for a 3-2 victory over the Denver Summit, spoiling the expansion club's debut at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in front of a sold-our crowd Saturday.

Associated Press

In other National Women's Soccer League matches Saturday, Gotham FC dominated visiting Bay FC 3-0, North Carolina won 1-0 at Houston, and host Chicago beat Boston 2-0.

Yazmeen Ryan played a pinpoint pass into the box to find Melissa Kössler to give Denver a 1-0 lead and the first home goal in the club’s history. It was Kössler's fourth goal of the season.

After seeing her initial shot cleared off the line by Kristen McNabb, Natasha Flint headed home the rebound to make it 2-0 in the 32nd minute.

In the second half, it was all San Diego (5-1-0). Lia Godfrey scored in the 49th minute to trim the lead to 1-2. She leads all rookies with four goals this season and set a new club rookie record.

Off of Godfrey's corner kick, defender Kennedy Wesley smashed a header through the hands of goalkeeper Abby Smith for the equalizer in the 57th minute.

The comeback was completed in the 65th minute for the visitors on an own goal from defender Carson Pickett.

It was the first time San Diego has ever come-from-behind to win from a halftime deficit in the club’s history (0-23-6).

The loss in at the Commerce City, Colorado, stadium snapped a three-game shutout streak for the Denver Summit (1-3-2).

Reiten's debut sparks Gotham attack

Rose Lavelle scored a goal and drew a penalty to lead Gotham (2-2-2) in the shutout of Bay FC.

In the 20th minute, Karlie Lema attempted to clear the ball, but it deflected off Bay goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz for an own goal. Lavelle doubled the lead in the 41st minute with her first goal of the season.

In first-half stoppage time, Lavelle was fouled in the box on a sliding challenge from Maddie Moreau. Esther González converted the penalty kick to make it 3-0.

Gotham came into the match on a four-match winless streak and only two goals scored all season.

Norway international and former Chelsea winger Guro Reiten earned the start in her debut.

Bay (2-3-0) leading scorer Alex Pfeiffer was unavailable due to a knee injury. The club has now been held scoreless in back-to-back matches.

Sanchez scores lone goal North Carolina road win

For the third straight game, Manaka Matsukubo recorded a goal contribution for the North Carolina Courage, this time on the road against the Dash.

In the 42nd minute, Matsukubo provided the service to Ashley Sanchez for her fourth goal of the season and the lone goal of the match.

In the 77th minute, Ally Schlegel took a heavy touch. In an attempt to recover the ball, she exposed her cleat and made contact with Danielle Colaprico which resulted in a direct red card. North Carolina (2-2-1) played down a player the rest of the way.

Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan made two saves to preserve the shutout win for her second clean sheet of the season.

The Houston Dash (3-2-0) were held scoreless for the first time this season.

Boston drops fifth straight match

Jordyn Huitema scored her second goal of the season to lead the Chicago Stars.

Huitema scored in the 10th minute after a corner kick and a failed clearance. On a breakaway, Ryan Gareis would find Nádia Gomes for the 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.

After a head-to-head collision, Huitema was taken off as a concussion substitute in the 72nd minute.

This was the first time Chicago (2-4-0) held their opposition off the scoresheet this season.

Expansion Boston (0-5-0) has yet to win this season.
