Louisiana becomes latest hotspot for mystery drug that’s 10 times stronger than fentanyl and tied to 41 deaths

Louisiana is on high alert as experts warn of the spread of apowerful synthetic opioid known as cychlorphine, joining at least 12 states that have issued warnings after finding evidence of the drug, which is linked to at least 41 U.S.deaths.

The Independent US

The drug, sometimes manufactured to resemblecommercial painkillerslike oxycodone, has been identified in Caddo, DeSoto, and Ouachita parishes, according to recent testing from the North Louisiana Crime Lab.

There are currently no human studies of cychlorphine, but experts warn that lab testing shows the drug could be up to 10times more powerful than fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that itself is roughly 50 times more potent than heroin. This has experts worried that if cychlorphine penetrates the U.S. drug supply, it will wreak even more havoc than fentanyl, which killedabout 48,000 people in 2024, according to the most recent government statistics.

“With a drug like cychlorphine that is more powerful then fentanyl, it could take multiple doses of NARCAN — it could take a truck load of NARCAN — to reverse that overdose,” Kenton Leigh, deputy director of toxicology and chemistry at the lab, toldKSLA, referring to a widely available nasal spray used to reverse opioid overdoses.

The lab began warning of danger in March, after a sample from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office was found to contain the drug.

Authorities nationwide are warning about the increasing prevalence of cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid thought to be more powerful than fentanyl (North Louisiana Crime Lab)

“These substances are being encountered in counterfeit pharmaceutical forms, significantly increasing the risk of overdose,” it wrote in a public announcement.

Louisiana isn’t alone; states across the country are flagging cases and deaths tied to the drug.

Cychlorphine, also known by its full name of N-Propionitrile Chlorphine, wastied to 41 deathsbetween July of 2025 and this February, according to health officials in Tennessee. The drug is linked to at least one overdose death in Oklahoma, officials thereannounced in March. In Ohio, between October and January, eight items seized by police contained cychlorphineor a related compound, with six of these seizures tied to overdose cases.

Overall, the Center for Forensic Science Research & Education, a Justice Department partner, has identified cychlorphine in 25 blood specimens from fatal overdoses, with the drug as the sole opioid in nearly half of those cases. The samples were submitted to the center in late 2025 and early 2026, drawing from eight U.S. states and three provinces in Canada.

Public health officials are especially concerned about the drug because drug test kits and law enforcement testing schemes around the country largely aren’t designed to screen for this emerging threat.

"This is the first time we've seen it in South Carolina, which is very scary because none of us knew to test for it,” Naida Rutherford, the coroner in Richland County, South Carolina, told NPRof a recent positive ID of cychlorphine in an overdose death.

A Drug Enforcement Agency lab in Florida first spotted the drug in 2024.

“Through the end of February 2026, DEA laboratories have identified this substance in 22 samples,” the agency toldThe Hill.

The Independenthas contacted the DEA for comment.

Experts believe the drug, likely manufactured in Asia, has grown increasingly prominent as U.S. and Chinese officials alike crack down on other synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

Fentanyl, another synthetic opioid, killed about 48,000 people in 2024, according to the most recent government statistics (DEA)

North Louisiana Crime Lab system director Joey Jones toldThe Shreveport-Bossier City Advocatethat law enforcement and drug distributors are caught in "a never-ending chase that is a cat-and-mouse game."

"These are manufactured in China and distributed through the cartels on our streets," Jonessaid.

With reported cases of the drug across at least 13 states — New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Texas, Washington, Nevada, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Ohio and South Carolina — officials say it is more important than ever to use drugs from legitimate, tested sources.

“It has never been more dangerous to take street-level drugs than right now,” Chris Thomas, chief administrative officer and director of Tennessee’s Knox County Regional Forensic Center, told WATEearlier this month.

Two teams which produced a5-4 instant classiclast week will take center stage on Wednesday for the second act of their Champions League semifinal.

The return game in Munich surely cannot reach thesame height of dramaas the waves of finessed attacks — and overwhelmed defenses — reached in Paris.

Still, coaches Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany will aim for the stars.

“More, even more,” Kompany said in Paris, when asked about his main message to Bayern's players for the decisive second leg.

Arsenal hosts Atletico Madrid on Tuesday with thescore 1-1.

The rewards for a semifinal victory are a place in the final on May 30 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

Stellar semifinals

Champions League semifinals are often more memorable than the title matches.

One year ago, an exciting Inter Milan-Barcelona contest was widely praised like the PSG-Bayern opener has been. A 3-3 first leg in Barcelona was just an appetizer forInter’s roller coaster 4-3 winin extra time at San Siro.

In 2022, Real Madridsomehow rallied in stoppage time of the second legto deny Manchester City victory. Two Rodrygo goals forced extra time that was settled by Karim Benzema’s penalty for a 3-1 win. The wild first leg had finished4-3 to Cityin Manchester.

A vintage knockout phase in 2019 was capped by astonishing comebacks on back-to-back nights in the semifinal second legs byLiverpool against BarcelonaandTottenham at Ajax.

It is perhaps eight years since a truly compelling back-and-forth final, when substitute Gareth Bale’s goals — the first an iconic bicycle kick — liftedMadrid to a 3-1 winover Liverpool in Kyiv.

While PSG excelled in the final last year, the5-0 rout of Interwas never competitive.

Arena of entertainers

Munich was the scene of PSG's finest game last season against Inter to fulfill itsQatari owners' questto become European champion for the first time.

The Allianz Arena is also where six-time champion Bayern won all six home games in the Champions League this season, scoring 20 goals including four past Real Madrid in aquarterfinals, second-leg thrillerthree weeks ago.

Munich is the only candidateto host the Champions League final again in 2028. UEFA should confirm that decision in September.

Atletico in England

Coach Diego Simeone takes his Atletico team to north London for a third game this season. Third time lucky?

Atleticolost 4-0 at Arsenalin a league-phase game in October and survived a 3-2 loss at Tottenham in the second leg of the round of 16 that easily could have been a bigger margin. Atletico also started this Champions League campaign in England in September — andlost, 3-2 at Liverpool.

It all adds up to five games lost by Atletico in its 15-game Champions League campaign so far, while Arsenal has the last remaining unbeaten record.

Neither team has been European champion. It's 10 years since Atletico played in the last of its three finals, losing to Real Madrid, and 20 years since Arsenal lost its only final, against Barcelona.

Penalty debates

All four semifinalists were awarded, and scored, a penalty kick last week. A fifth wasawarded to Arsenal but then overturnedafter the referee was sent to his pitchside monitor to review replays.

Since the Video Assistant Referee system made its World Cup debut in 2018, the trend in top-tier games has been toaward ever more spot-kicks.

None of the five decisions last week was universally praised, and the two handball incidents showed how UEFA’s view differs to many coaches, players and fans.

UEFA’s director of refereeing Roberto Rosetti has previously said “we don’t like soft penalties” and cautioned against “microscopic VAR interventions” — which seemed to be happening last week.

For each handball, the ball first deflected from the body of, respectively, Bayern’s Alphonso Davies and Arsenal’s Ben White before contacting an arm which was not held tight to the side of their bodies. That is typically not a penalty in the English Premier League but almost certainly is in UEFA competitions.

Rosetti plans to meet soon with refereeing officials from Europe’s main leagues to seek more clarity and consistency next season.

Harper's Bazaar F1

It’s hot down in Miami, where the worlds of race-car driving, fashion, and entertainment have flocked together for the Formula One Grand Prix. But when it comes to staying cool without compromising your dinner look,Hailey Bieber’s got it covered.

Heading to Casa Tua for a Frame event hosted byAlexandra Leclerc, Bieber beat the heat with a breezy Saint Laurent halter top that just so happened to be ripe with fashion history. The silk blue style, with its choker necktie, billowing silhouette, and colorful print, was designed by Tom Ford as part of his final collection for the house. It showed during the Autumn/Winter 2004 season, before he left the label in Stefano Pilati’s hands.

Rather than styling the piece with the matching maxi skirt from the runway, Bieber dressed it down with a pair of jeans. She kept her hair off her face in a high, slicked-back bun, and added lightweight hoops to her ears. For makeup, she embraced the glow of the heat, adding blush and highlighter to her natural complexion.

The Rhode founder sat next to Leclrec, who was captured in a red-and-white gingham set from her collection for Frame. On top, she wore acap-sleeve teewith a keyhole detail, and to pair, she selected thematching capris.

A content creator, art curator, and founder of the Corazones Unidos Fund, Leclrec worked with the denim brand on a capsule collection inspired by her life in Monaco (and her beloved dog). It was only fitting that she should celebrate the new launch during F1, where her husband, Charles Leclerc, was competing for Ferrari.

Benavidez KOs Ramirez in the 6th to win the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles

LAS VEGAS (AP) — David Benavidez hasn't given up the dream of facing Canelo Alvarez — and now he might have leverage.

Benavidez Ramirez Boxing

Benavidez put on a show with Alvarez sitting ringside on Saturday night, moving up 25 pounds in weight and dominating former sparring partner Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez.

He twice sent Ramirez to the canvas, including knocking him out at 2:59 of the sixth round to win the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles and become the first boxer to win championships at 168, 175 and 200 pounds.

Benavidez (32-0, 26 knockouts) not only remained undefeated, but showed why he was a -600 favorite over Ramirez (48-2, 30 KOs).

In the co-main event, WBA super middleweight championship fight, Jaime MunguĂa (46-2, 35 KOs) upset title holder Armando ResĂ©ndiz (16-3, 11 KOs) by winning a resounding unanimous decision. ResĂ©ndiz was a -200 favorite, but MunguĂa — the former WBO junior middleweight champ — was the aggressor from the start and won by scores of 117-111, 119-109 and 120-108.

“It feels great to have this championship belt with me, but this is just the beginning," MunguĂa said. "I’m excited for what comes next. We are ready for big challenges and great fights.”

Benavidez has chased Canelo with hopes of setting up a showdown, but Alvarez never agreed to it and it has been looking unlikely to happen.

Maybe now it's different, and Benavidez didn't waste the opportunity to make the case yet again.

“I see Canelo in the building. Let me just ask the fans this. Do you guys want to see Canelo versus David Benavidez?" the man known as “The Mexican Monster” asked, drawing a roar from the crowd.

“Enough said. That means we can’t leave that fight on the table. I have respect for Canelo. He’s a great champion. I’m a great champion, too. Let’s do it.”

Benavidez said he would be willing go back down in weight to make it happen.

“I’m still champion at 175," Benavidez said. “I’m champion at 175 and 200. So if they want to come get it at 175, let’s get it at 175.”

Boxing fans, or least those who support Benavidez, haven't forgotten how Canelo has yet to take on the match. Alvarez, wearing a black MunguĂa T-shirt, was booed all three times he was shown on the large video board. Benavidez, who was born in Phoenix and lives in Miami, later was cheered while shown going through prefight preparations.

He then gave his fans plenty more to cheer about and they reciprocated by regularly chanting his nickname “Monstruo” in the Cinco de Mayo weekend showcase fight.

Benavidez, even when being backed down by Ramirez, delivered his signature rapid-fire combinations, usually pelting his opponent's head. A right hand to Ramirez's head in the fourth staggered him, and Benavidez went for the knockout but settled for the knockdown at the end of the round when Zurdo went down to his left knee.

Then two rounds later, Ramirez again went to a knee. This time, the fight was over.

“We came up together," Benavidez said. "We came up sparring together. I got him ready for his world championship fights. He got me ready for my world championship fights. I just want to say I love Zurdo Ramirez, but, you know, it is what it is in here. There’s only one ‘Monster.’”

And now the 29-year-old Benavidez can make a credible argument after dominating the 34-year-old Mexican that he one of the sport's best pound-for-pound boxers if not right at the top.

The statistics underscored how much Benavidez owned the fight.

According to Compubox, he landed 151 punches at a 46.2% to 89 for Ramirez, who reached his target on 19.8% of attempts. The power punches were 137-64 and the percentage 56.8-27.7.

“I knew I wasn’t going to be able to overpower him because it was my first time coming up to 200 pounds," Benavidez said. “So I knew I had to use the gifts that God gave me: speed, power, movement, punch selection and IQ. That’s exactly what I did.”
