Behind-the-scenes of Chanel's Iconic Purse campaign with Penelope Cruz
EARLIER THIS MONTH at Chanel's fall-winter 2024/25 ready-to-wear show, the esteemed French Maison unveiled a sensual marketing campaign movie starring Penélope Cruz and Brad Pitt — paying homage to the French New Wave basic Un Homme et Une Femme ('A Man and a Lady') by French filmmaker Claude Lelouch.
Chanel artistic director Virginie Viard — a longtime fan of cinema, and the New Wave particularly — needed to reference Lelouch's masterwork, with all its lingering want and sensuality. The film itself also happens to be set in Deauville, the seaside resort the place Coco Chanel opened a hat boutique in 1912 and subsequently introduced her first high fashion designs the following yr. And in yet one more contact of kismet, the unique movie sees the titular lady carrying a Chanel handbag as she embarks upon a journey of sensuous love — the bag itself the private favourite of the actor, Anouk Aimée.
Taking inspiration from Un Homme et Une Femme for Chanel's Iconic Handbag campaign was only pure, then, for Viard, who tapped the Maison's longtime pal Cruz to stroll in Aimée's footwear for the brief movie.
Because the campaign is formally launched, Chanel has provided a glimpse into its creation, with a behind-the-scenes interview with Cruz — who cites A Man and a Lady as "certainly one of [her] favorite movies of all time". For her, the inclusion of that telltale Chanel handbag within the unique movie was the right fit.
"Anouk Aimée was a Chanel lady, that character. So it makes complete sense that the bag was there in the midst of the desk in their dialog in the restaurant," she says.
Within the video, Cruz speaks of her longtime affection for the long-lasting film, how excited she was to behave alongside Pitt, and her adoration for Viard's "dopamine" inducing designs — as well as how surreal it feels to be a Chanel lady herself.
"Once I was a bit of woman, it was only a dream to be able to at some point have a Chanel bag," she displays, gratefully.
