Robert Irwin's sister Bindi, who won Dancing with the Stars in 2015, was there to support her younger brother as he made his ballroom debut on the season 34 premiere

Robert said that his family is "everything to me" as he reflected on Bindi's support, and that of her husband Chandler, daughter Grace and their mom Terri Irwin

There was really just one person on Robert Irwin's mind as he made his Dancing with the Stars debut.

The 21-year-old and his partner Witney Carson impressed judges Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli on Tuesday, Sept. 16 — Hough praised Irwin's debut as "the best first dance I've ever seen on the show" — but after the show, the star revealed how his sister Bindi Irwin's presence in the ballroom was what meant everything to him.

"I can't help but get emotional when I talk about my family, I just — they are everything to me," Robert told Extra.

After his performance, he spoke to Bindi, 27, and he revealed that she told him, "I love you and I'm really proud of you," which he said "just means everything."

"This process is the most incredible whirlwind adrenaline rush — it's the most beautiful thing and the most incredible thing I've ever gotten to be part of, and to have them there is everything to me," he said of his family's support, as his mom Terri Irwin, Bindi's husband Chandler Powell and their daughter, Grace, were all in attendance. "I'm so lucky."

Robert then admitted that what really "made the night" for him was "the look on my niece's face." "She looked at me and she was like, 'Yes!' And I'm like, 'If Grace is happy, I've won,'" he told the outlet.

While his dad, famed Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, who died following an unprovoked attack by a stingray in 2006, could not be there to support him as he made his ballroom debut, Robert previously told PEOPLE said he wants to "make him proud."

"I just hope to keep his legacy alive, his spirit, his sense of just love for life," he said. "And so if I can bring that kind of energy into the ballroom and honor him and his legacy, then I've done my job."

As for what Steve would think of Robert competing, he admitted, "I don't know. I have no idea."

"He'd always go, 'I don't care if people remember me, I want people to remember my message and what I stand for.' And I think people remember his message and him," he said. "I mean, he just showed what it was to truly live life at 100% and above anything else, he was just the greatest dad, always there for us."

Robert also has the bonus of Bindi's own experience in the ballroom, as she won season 21 with Hough.

"The advice she's given me that I've really tried to cling to is just make it your own and just enjoy [it] because it's so fleeting," he told PEOPLE. "It goes by so fast. She was there the whole way. I mean, she was there the entire show, and won, and she still said it felt like a blink."
