Shedeur Sanders has been inching closer to making his NFL regular-season debut, but that won't be the case in Week 8.
The Cleveland Browns' quarterback in inactive with a back injury, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. He took part in a pregame workout before the team announced he would be absent for their contest against the New England Patriots.
Sanders slid up the depth chart, becoming QB2 after Cleveland traded Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals. Bailey Zappe will instead serve in that spot during Week 8, backing up the rookie, Dillon Gabriel.
The former Colorado Buffaloes star earned a roster spot during training camp, despite having an uphill climb after sliding to the fifth round.

Cleveland made room for Sanders by trading Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders during the offseason. However, it was Gabriel that was given the first chance as the starter, with Sanders still working behind the scenes.
It's unclear how long the back issue will sideline the rookie, but his path to getting into game action has become a lot clearer over the first couple months of the season.
