A private text conversation betweenTaylor SwiftandBlake Livelyhas been made public, as Lively andJustin Baldoni's legal battle continues to play out in court and in headlines. Among a barrage of emails, texts and depositions that were unsealed in theLively-Baldonilegal case is an exchange that allegedly showsSwiftsiding with Lively against the "It Ends With Us" director.
The messages have gained so much attention not because of their bearing on the case, celebrity watchers say, but because they show a rare, unedited glimpse of an A-list friendship and serve as a reminder that what we say in private doesn't always stay private.
Taylor Swift,Blake Livelyand why we're obsessed with their texts
Within the hundreds of exhibits that were unsealed Jan. 20, is an alleged December 2024 text exchange between Lively and Swift in a filing obtained by USA TODAY. In the exhibit, previously filed by Baldoni's team, on Dec. 5, 2024, Swift appeared to send Livelya screenshot of People magazine's reportingon Baldoni speaking out on "trauma" from a prior relationship, along with the message: "I think this b---- knows something is coming because he's gotten out his tiny violin."
Lively seemed to respond, "(It) rings different when he doesn't end the story by saying 'Did I always listen when they said no? No.' Like he did with me. But that must not (have) tested well in the focus group."
The conversation – taking place in the days leading up toSwift's final Eras Tour show– appeared to start with Lively checking in with Swift, asking "is everything OK?" as she "felt like a bad friend lately." Swift responded that Lively was "not wrong" to feel things were off. "I feel distanced from you even more than we are geographically," Swift's message said, because Lively's recent communications "felt like I was reading a mass corporate email sent to 200 employees." Swift's message added, "You don't need to apologize. Just come back please 🙏"

In a separate exchange weeks later, Swift sent a link to a report of Baldoni being dropped by his agency and told Lively, "You won. You did it. And you ... helped so many people who won't have to go through this again."
The messages sparked discourse online, with somecalling the texts cringeworthy.Others called out Swiftfor siding with Lively privately, despite her team releasing a public statement distancing the pop star from the legal drama.
These texts have captivated the public because of how unfiltered they are.
"We get glimpses into celebrities real lives, but only what they want to show us," says Rob Shuter, host of the podcast"Naughty But Nice with Rob Shuter"and a former celebrity publicist. "This is real. This is just the two of them. These were never ever meant to be read. And the fact that they are is what is driving this story."

Swift revealed her secretto social media. Here's what we can learn from it.
The messages also touch on an experience that anyone, famous or not, can relate to: Venting to a friend about someone you both don't like.
"You don't have to be famous to know what it's like to be really annoyed by somebody at work and ... text your friends after work," Shuter adds. "The fact that Taylor and Blake are doing that, it's so revealing. It's so interesting. But it shouldn't be, because they are human beings. And I think that, as a society, we put celebrities up on a pedestal, and we forget that even Queen Elizabeth had to go to the bathroom."
The real lesson in the Taylor Swift, Blake Lively text fiasco
Lively and Swift aren't the only public figures with texts making waves lately. The internet has also been captivated byreports of private text messagesallegedly exchanged between PresidentDonald Trumpand European leaders over Greenland.
Both stories, Shuter says, speak to "the power of text messages" and offer a stark reminder: Don't put anything in writing that you wouldn't want everyone to read.
"Anybody now can take a screen grab," he says. "It's not private."

And, once texts get out, you can't put the genie back in the bottle.
Melvin Williams, a professor of communication and media studies at Pace University, says the spiteful nature of Swift and Lively's texts doesn't reflect well on either woman − and both have probably lost some fans as a result.
"A core appeal of Taylor Swift's brand is her parasocial relationship with fans," he says. "Thus, for fans to read text messages of Taylor Swift engaging in deceptive behavior directly contrasts with their image of her, resurrects past questions about Swift's authenticity and behind-the-scenes behaviors, and raises questions concerning the singer's complicity in the Blake Lively andJustin Baldonidebacle."
Taylor Swift, Travis Kelceand why their engagement is a bigger deal than you realize
When it comes to texting, Shuter offers celebrities, and everyone else, the same advice: If you wouldn't post it, don't send it.
"I don't send a text message or an email that ... I could not take a screen grab (of) and post it on Instagram," he says. "I think people are much more careful."
