Inauguration live updates: Zohran Mamdani takes office as NYC mayor

New York City MayorZohran Mamdani's four-term term leading the nation's largest city begins Jan. 1 with a seven-block long street party and guest appearances at his inaugural ceremony from the leading lights of the left.

The 34-year-olddemocratic socialistwill be sworn in outside City Hall bySen. Bernie Sandersafter an introductionby Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Mamdani is the 112th person — but thefirst Muslim and the first person of South Asian descent— to lead the nation's largest city.

In 2025, Mamdani stunned political establishment by defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo first in theDemocratic primaryand again in theNovember general election. He ran on aprogressive platform to address affordability, reshaping a mayor's race thatresonated even in the White Housewith Republican PresidentDonald Trump.

When is Mamdani inaugurated?

After midnight on New Year's Day, New York Attorney GeneralLetitia James gave Mamdani his oath of officeduring a smaller gathering with his family.

At 1 p.m., Sanders, I-Vermont, a fellow democratic socialist and Brooklyn native, is set to swear in Mamdani during a public ceremony on the steps of New York City Hall in Lower Manhattan. City Comptroller Mark Levine and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams are also scheduled to be sworn in.

A public block party will take place after the ceremony.
