Springfield High’s Addie Maddox arrived right on cue.

The sophomore forward twice found the back post in the second half to lead the Senators to their second straight Central State Eight Conference girls soccer title in a 2-0 victory over Chatham Glenwood at a rain-soaked Lee Field on Tuesday, May 5.

Maddox knows the drill.

“I think it’s just more knowing that if I wasn’t there, then there would not have been a shot and goal,” Maddox said, “so that really just kind of pushes me to always try my best to be there.”

Maddox ranks second on the team with 15 goals, not to mention 12 assists. She provided as many as four goals in a 7-0 win over Sacred Heart-Griffin on April 9.

“She’s a gamer,” SHS coach Pat Phillips said. “She kept her shots down. She was in the right place and made the correct runs on those two goals.”

“We talked about sharing the ball and we know we’ve got multiple kids who can score,” Phillips said. “Tonight was definitely Addie’s night and she took advantage of her chances. "

Phillips said his team coalesced after a difficult stretch of games that featured Rochester and Pleasant Plains as well as two games in Iowa over the weekend.

SHS (13-3-1, 7-0-1 CS8) earned the No. 1 seed in the Class 2A Mattoon Regional. The Senators meet either No. 8 Jacksonville or No. 9 Alton in the regional semifinals on Tuesday, May 19.

“This past weekend, I think we worked a lot,” Lyons said. “We played some really tough teams and I think we had good outcomes against them, so I think that just helped us kind of come together and realize that we need to step up and we can step it up. I think that’s what we did tonight.”

Chatham Glenwood, a No. 2 seed, faces No. 7 Highland in the 2A Quincy Regional semifinals on Tuesday, May 19.

The Titans (9-4-6, 6-1-1) nearly evened the match with a few chances in the final 20 minutes, including a shot from sophomore Addison Matthews that drifted just wide of the far post.

Glenwood coach Jay Lipe said it will only prepare the team for the playoffs.

“We had chances,” Lipe said. “They did a good job — cleared one ball off the line and their goalkeeper (Lydia Auble) handled everything clean, then they made the most of the couple chances there in the second half and finished us off.”
