The Minnesota Vikings are the last undefeated team left, and general manager Nolan Teasley has surely been busy working the trade lines as he navigates his first trade deadline in an enviable position. Will the Vikings capitalize on their hot start? The belief is the Vikings will be making a move of some kind before the Nov. 10 trade deadline, and a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback knows exactly who Kevin O’Connell’s team should be targeting.

Russell Wilson Wants Minnesota Vikings to Add Jonathan Taylor to Unleash Kyler Murray and Justin Jefferson

The Vikings could address a number of needs, from the interior offensive line, a blocking tight end, another pass-rushing DT, a rotational edge rusher, or a safety to further strengthen the NFL’s best defense. Yet, the better approach may be to add a difference-maker who can unlock the potential within coach O’Connell’s offense, and the perfect target may or may not be available.
Appearing on CBS’ “Set Hut” alongside Chris Long, former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson urged the Vikings to get aggressive and trade for Jonathan Taylor.
“Maybe we knock on the door of Jonathan Taylor and see if we can get that running game going with Aaron Jones and have a two-tandem running back system. He’s got 140 rushes already, 587 yards, this is just this season. You know who knows how to score touchdowns? This guy knows how to score touchdowns, he’s got eight of ’em already and Daniel Jones isn’t playing good in Indy.”

The First-Team All-Pro would give the Vikings one of the best running backs in the NFL, whose combined speed, power, and excellent vision to record at least 1,000 yards from scrimmage in five of the past six seasons. It’s also Wilson’s belief that the three-time Pro Bowl running back would make life easier for Murray and even Justin Jefferson, opening up more opportunities downfield, with the front seven keying in on trying to slow down Taylor too.
“What could he do if you gave Kyler Murray a running back? Let him put under center, downhill runs, play-action. Get the ball deep down the field. Justin Jefferson needs to have at least a go ball a quarter. We gotta be throwing the ball to him no matter what. If there’s two guys on him, still, throw it to him, it’s a him route, it doesn’t matter, but when you got a guy like this, it makes it a one-high defense, 1-on-1 matchups for Justin Jefferson.”
Wilson on How Taylor Trade Would Impact Vikings
No one has more rushing touchdowns than Taylor does this season. This is a player who’s had two seasons recording 18 rushing touchdowns, joining a team that ranks 27th in rushing touchdowns this season.
After the Colts traded potential future Hall of Fame guard Quenton Nelson for a 2027 third-round pick plus a 2028 fifth and dealt DeForest Buckner for a 2027 fourth, it’s anyone’s guess what they’re seeking for Taylor. Nelson and Buckner were both on expiring contracts; meanwhile, Taylor signed a two-year, $44 million extension back in August and is under contract through 2028, meaning the Colts don’t necessarily need to move the 27-year-old.
The Vikings are projected to have 11 selections in the 2027 NFL Draft, including an extra third-round pick (Eagles) and two extra fifths. While it may seem like a heavy price to trade what’s sure to be at least one Day 2 pick, if not two, across the 2027 and 2028 draft classes, Taylor may be the type of blue-chip talent worth paying the price for.
Plus, adding a surefire star running back who’s under contract through the next two seasons would eliminate running back as a top need heading into the offseason, especially considering Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason are both in the final year of their deal in Minnesota. Add it all up, and Taylor may be just what the Vikings are looking for, if the Colts are willing to deal him.
