More than fashion: A pin worn by Venezuela's Rodríguez on state visits riles Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) —Guyanacomplained to Caribbean leaders on Tuesday after Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez wore a controversial pin during official visits depicting the map of Guyana’s western region thatVenezuelahas long claimed as its own.

Associated Press

The pin, which Rodríguez wore on her attire, is in the shape of Guyana’s resources-richEssequiboregion that makes up two-thirds of its territory that's atthe heart of a centuries-old territorial disputewith Venezuela, which neighbors Guyana to west.

The pin has been increasingly worn by Venezuelan government officials, state television anchors, lawmakers and members of the ruling party following the U.S. capture ofNicolás Maduroin a stunningnighttime raid on his residencein Caracas, Venezuela's capital, in early January.

In a note to Terrance Drew, the prime minister of St. Kitts and Nevis and chairman of a Caribbean trade bloc known as Caricom,Guyanese President Irfaan Alisaid the pin asserts “Venezuela’s claim to Guyana’s territory.”

Rodríguez wore the pin when shevisited Barbadoson Monday, and previously, during a visit to Grenada earlier in April, her first overseas trip since she took over afterMaduro's seizure.

In his note, Ali said he fears Rodríguez’s use of the pin on official trips could be misinterpreted as her hosts' “acquiescence or tolerance" of Venezuela's territorial claims.

“Caricom’s principled support for Guyana must be reflected not only in declarations but in the context and conduct of official engagements,” he added, referring to the bloc.

Venezuela has long argued that an 1899 international boundaries commission cheated it out of the area during British colonial rule. The land dispute is currently before the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands.

In his note, Ali also reminded the trade bloc that it has unequivocally supported Guyana’s claim to the region at key meetings and insisted Venezuela should not be allowed to display “symbols and maps” of Essequibo as it would only undermine the case before the international court.

He has also railed against the inclusion of Essequibo on official maps of Venezuela, calling it a ”calculated and provocative assertion of a claim” that Guyana has persistently rejected.

In recent years, Venezuela has sent gunboats to U.S.-runoffshore oilfields licensed by Guyana, demanding that oil production there be halted, threats that the rigs have ignored.

In Caracas, government officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

Drake Maye gives support for Mike Vrabel amid Dianna Russini controversy

New England PatriotsquarterbackDrake Mayeoffered his support for Mike Vrabel in his first comments since the 50-year-old coach'srelationship with former NFL reporter Dianna Russinicame under scrutiny.

USA TODAY Sports

Maye was asked about the drama surrounding Vrabel at an April 29 event promoting the upcoming Best Buddies Challenge: Hyannis Port. His response?

"We’re here for coach. We love coach, what he does for us, what he’s done for us this past year – you can’t speak into words,"Maye told Jonathan Hall of 7News. "Just thankful he’s our head coach. I know he’s dealing with some stuff off the field and out of the coaching world, we’re here for him. And I know he’s going to come back."

Maye's comments come after Vrabel missed Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft to"begin to seek counseling" and be with his family. His decision came after he and Russini were photographed together at an exclusive Arizona resort ahead of the annual league meetings in late March.

The New York Post also published photos of the two interlocking hands and hugging. The outlet laterreleased what appeared to be more photos of the two– these from a New York bar and dating back to March 2020 – on April 23, the day the draft began.

Vrabel addressed stepping away from the Patriots for Day 3 in a conversation with reporters later that day.

"My priorities are my family and this football team – in that order. And there is a balance there that I am going to create," Vrabel said. "My family needs me this weekend, and that's where I'll be."

Since then, several players – including tight endHunter Henryand linebackerRobert Spillane– have been asked about the maelstrom surrounding Vrabel.

Henry made it clear his focus was on preparing for the 2026 season but credited Vrabel with doing "a great job" addressing players amid his off-the-field issues.

"It's been the same Vrabes bringing a lot of energy in the room,"Henry told reporters on April 28. "Obviously, he addressed it, and that's kinda all I'll say about it."

Meanwhile, Spillane noted Vrabel's situation hasn't greatly impacted the team's ability to accomplish work during the NFL's offseason program.

"Coach coaches football and he keeps the main thing, the main thing," Spillane said. "I know he’s dealing with personal issues, but when we’re in the building, we speak football."

NCAA remains on track to expand to a 76-team March Madness bracket for next season

The NCAA is still deliberating expandingMarch Madnesson both the men's andwomen'ssides to 76 teams for next season — a much-expected development that's been in the works for years.

The NCAA released a brief statement Tuesday in the wake of an ESPN report that cited unnamed sources saying a decision to add eight teams to the bracket is a mere formality that's expected in May.

“Expanding the basketball tournaments would require approval from multiple NCAA committees, including the men’s and women’s basketball committees, and no final recommendations or decisions have been made at this time,” the statement said.

Earlier this month at the Final Four, NCAA President Charlie Baker said the committees would, in fact, return to discussing the expansion once this year's tournament was over.

The tournaments have been at 68 teams since 2011, when four play-in games were added to the beginning of the first week of play. The new format would add eight more at-large teams and take eight more teams out of the main bracket for play-in games.

The expansion isn't expected to generate a lot more income because it will only add games early in the first week. The current TV deal runs through 2032 and could be tweaked slightly.

Regardless of finances, the expansion would give power conferences more chances to place teams in the bracket — a growing concern as those conferences seek more power and control over college sports in the era of name, image and likeness compensation and the transfer portal.

The Egypt forward, whois leaving the club at the end of this season, sustained what appeared to be a hamstring problem in thewin over Crystal Palacelast Saturday.

Liverpool coach Arne Slot confirmed on Friday that Salah will play again during this campaign.

“Usually he’s earlier fit than other players after a minor injury — because he has a minor injury — so we expect him indeed to be back in the final part of the season, but not for Sunday,” Slot said.

“It's a big relief that his injury is minor, so that he's able to play for us, that he's able to play at the World Cup. If there's any time a player that deserves to have (that) kind of big send-off, it's definitely Mo.”

Salah announced in late March that he's leaving the clubone year earlier than expected. This is his ninth season at Anfield.

The 33-year-old Salah has endured a lackluster campaign that includeda public rowwith Slot. He's scored just seven Premier League goals after topping the chart last season with 29.

Liverpool has four games left this season, which concludes May 24 when Brentford visits Anfield.

Slot's team trails third-place United by three points with both sides on track for Champions League spots.

Salah key player for Egypt

Egypt is inGroup G at the World Cupand opens against Belgium on June 15 before facing New Zealand and Iran. Egypt has never won a World Cup match in any of its three appearances.

Their most recent appearance was at the 2018 edition in Russia, where Salah was slowed by a shoulder injury sustained in the Champions League final weeks earlier, when Liverpool lost to Real Madrid.

More than 1,000 homes evacuated in Plymouth after suspected WWII device found

More than 1,000 homes have been evacuated and schools have been closed in Plymouth after a suspected World War Two device was discovered at a building site.

A 400-metre cordon has been put in place in the Southway area of the city and residents in have been told to stay with friends or family, or go to an evacuation centre set up at Southway Youth and Community Centre.

Royal Navy unexploded ordnance (UXO) specialists have worked through the night to asses the device and to determine the safest way to make it secure.

“It is important to note that the UXO specialists will not be able to make the device safe until they are reassured that the area has been evacuated. Whilst we appreciate that it is inconvenient, we do ask that people support this evacuation, for the safety of themselves and others,” Plymouth City Council has said.

Austin Reaves hopes to return to Lakers for pivotal Game 5 vs Rockets after nearly 4 weeks out

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Austin Reaves and the Los Angeles Lakers will wait until game time Wednesday night to determine whether he is ready to return from nearly four weeks on the sidelines with a strained oblique muscle.

Reaves expressed cautious optimism Tuesday when he spoke to reporters for the first time since getting hurt April 2 at Oklahoma City. The Lakers' second-leading scorerwas listed as questionablefor the past two games of their first-round playoff series against Houston, but ultimately didn't play whileLos Angeles split the conteststo take a 3-1 series lead.

“I want to get back out there as fast as I can,” Reaves said at the Lakers' training complex. “I feel good. Trending in the right direction. I can't wait to get up (Wednesday) and attack another day.”

Lakers coach JJ Redick gave no hints about the team's mindset around Reaves, saying his availability will be "based on whether he’s good to go. We’ll talk through that.”

Reaves has tried to stay even-keeled during the second major injury absence of his otherwise outstanding season. He averaged 23.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds, but played in just 51 games largely thanks to the oblique injury and a strained left calf that sidelined him for 19 straight games from Christmas to February.

Although Reaves finished the game in which he got hurt in Oklahoma City, he knew the injury was significant because he registered it over his own high pain tolerance. NBA scoring champion Luka Doncic also left that game with a strained hamstring, and neither high-scoring guard has played for the Lakers since then.

But their teammates have donemuch better than many expectedwithout them, and Reaves is impressed.

“Basically the message from that day forward was that they were going to do everything as a team to give us an opportunity to come back and play, and they’ve done exactly what they said," Reaves said.

LeBron Jamesand his supporting cast won the first three games of its first-round series and pushed the favored Rockets to the brink of elimination, evenstealing Game 3 in overtimeafter trailing by six points with 30 seconds left in regulation.

“It’s been a lot of fun, just seeing the determination, the togetherness, and just the joy of them playing basketball together (and) competing every single possession," Reaves said. “It’s been a lot of fun. Me and Luka talk about it every time we’re watching — just how hard we’re playing, the attention to detail and the togetherness.”

Doncic isn't yet close to a return, but both teams could be without their top scorers once again in Game 5.Rockets star Kevin Duranthas missed three of the four games in the series with injuries, and he didn't participate in practice in Houston on Tuesday before the team flew to Los Angeles.

Pistons-Magic takeaways: Detroit's problems are coming to a head as Orlando aims to dunk No. 1 seed

Can we just talk about Orlando Magic forward Jamal Cain's dunk on Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren?

Yahoo Sports

I mean, seriously, look:

Do we even care about the game? Like, who actually won? I genuinely don't remember.

That is one of the nastiest throw-downs ever and not just in a playoff context. Cain kept climbing and dunked on Duren, a man built like a Greek god, so hard the All-Star center backpeddled after coming down back to Earth.

(OK,the Magic took a commanding 3-1 series lead by winning 94-88, but that's definitely just a B-story to Cain's jam.)

In all seriousness, let's dive into Orlando's big win Monday night as it tries to become the seventh No. 8 seed to knock off a No. 1 in NBA history.

Cade Cunningham's turnovers are a team issue

As Cunningham entered Game 4, he had totaled 19 turnovers in the the series.

By halftime, he was up to 25 after turning it over six times in the first half.

While Cunningham is ultimately responsible for hanging on to the ball, the Pistons' roster construction isn't doing him any favors.

With both Duren and Ausar Thompson being almost entirely non-threats from the outside, Orlando has the freedom to double- and even triple-team Cunningham, swarming him whenever his feet are inside the 3-point line.

While Tobias Harris has done a solid job of adding spacing and overall scoring, the bottom line is simple: It shouldn't be this difficult for the Pistons to generate offense through Cunningham, but they have no other creators on the roster.

Perhaps they should have made a play for someone at the trade deadline, instead of sitting still.

But here they are, shooting 37.8% from the floor and 20% from 3 in a crucial Game 4 as their season appears to be slipping away.

Wendell Carter Jr. is eating Jalen Duren's lunch

Throughout the regular season, it was never in doubt who, among Carter and Duren, had the best season. Duren was an All-Star, a double-double machine and one of the most exciting young players in the league.

Carter, who is far more of a role player than a featured star, apparently didn't get the memo.

During this series, the 6-foot-10 Carter has constantly outhustled, outworked and outdone Duren. It's not always reflected in his raw line (Carter had 12 points and 11 rebounds in Game 4), but his effort has put a spotlight on Duren as he enters free agency this summer.

Duren has struggled mightily all series, scoring a grand total of 39 points over the course of the four games, finding it difficult to get up shots, getting beat by Carter on backdoor lobs and overall having one heck of a troublesome series, which could cost him millions this July.

Dear Jamahl Mosley, make better use of Paolo Banchero

I may sound like a broken record here, but giving Banchero the ball high out on the floor and asking him to "do stuff" (which I'm guessing is his directive, because there doesn't seem to be anything close to a plan), is aching for punishment.

Banchero isn't a natural shooter, nor is he particularly effective as a spacer.

He is, however, ridiculously good near the rim, and when he ducks in for layups and dunks, he draws a ton of fouls and converts plays.

Orlando has one of the most inconsistent offenses in the league, and its plan is to use its most versatile offensive player, who is an athletic 6-10, 250-pound powerhouse, as an outside-in option?

It's been nonsensical for a while now, and it only looks worse after Banchero shot 4-of-18 from the floor and missed all four of his 3-point attempts Monday night.
