PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — President Donald Trump is not getting a British Open to the Turnberry course he owns in the near future, an issue the R&A's new chief executive said Wednesday was more about transportation than politics.

Turnberry is regarded as the most beautiful of the links on the Open rotation, set along the Ayrshire coast in Scotland across from the Ailsa Craig. It last hosted the Open in 2009, before Trump bought the resort.

Mark Darbon, who took over at the R&A this year from Martin Slumbers, said Turnberry had not been taken off the list of potential British Open sites, but transportation and other issues had to be addressed.

"I think we've been extremely clear on our position in respect of Turnberry. We love the golf course but we've got some big logistical challenges there," he said. "You see the scale of their setup here and we've got some work to do on the road, rail and accommodation infrastructure around Turnberry."

Darbon said the R&A met with Eric Trump and other leaders of Trump Golf a few months ago and the talks had been constructive.

"I think they understand clearly where we're coming from. We talked through some of the challenges that we have so we've got a good dialogue with them," he said.

Slumbers had previously said the R&A would not be going to Turnberry until it was comfortable the topic would be about golf and not the owner.

Turnberry has only hosted the British Open four times, first in 1977 with the famous "Duel in the Sun" when Tom Watson beat Jack Nicklaus. But the Open is getting bigger, and the roads are limited getting to Turnberry.

There has been speculation Trump, whose golf courses have never hosted a men's major, might ask the British government to intercede in getting the Open back to Turnberry.

"We have an ongoing dialogue with the UK government given that we're a major event that creates significant value into the UK economy," Darbon said. "We've spoken to them specifically about Turnberry and I think they've made it clear that the decision around where we take our championship rests with us.

"I would find it difficult to predict whether there will be any discussion on The Open if the President is making a visit here."

Turnberry is not the only Scottish links being ignored by the R&A. Muirfield, located along the Firth of Forth east of Edinburgh, is reputed to be the purest of links courses. Its first Open was in 1892, and there have been 15 others, most recently in 2013 won by Phil Mickelson.

Only St. Andrews has hosted more Opens than Muirfield.

But it has not been back there since 2013 as the R&A has been geared toward taking golf's oldest championship to courses that can hold big crowds. It is expected 278,000 spectators will be at Royal Portrush this week, the second-largest behind St. Andrews. The last Open at Muirfield had 142,000 spectators.

The Open will be at Royal Birkdale next year, and then St. Andrews in 2027. The site for 2028 has not been announced. Muirfield has never gone more than 11 years — except for interruptions from World War I and World War II — between Opens.

"We love the golf course at Muirfield. We're in a discussion with the venue right now," Darbon said. "There's some things that we need to evolve at Muirfield — the practice ground in particular is a challenge for us with a modern Open and there's some work we need to do with the venue to facilitate some of the infrastructure that we require.

"But it's a good dialogue and we'd love to be back there in the future."

Jimmy Graham may not have officially retired from the NFL, but the longtime tight end is keeping busy after rowing over 584 nautical miles in 10 days.

The 38-year-old's latest pursuit saw him train for the past 18 months to take part in the Arctic Challenge, a journey across the Arctic Ocean with three other team members in hopes of setting a Guinness World Record.

The crew of Graham, Andrew Tropp, and Hannah and John Huppi — the first mixed-gender team of four to row across the Arctic Ocean and the first all-American team to row across a polar ocean, broke the previous record held by a team of four of 15 days, 5 hours and 32 minutes, which was set in 2023.

As you could imagine, the conditions were rough, with the team forced to drop anchor twice during their journey. Not to mention the cold, rain and wind causing issues with recharging their electronics.

Update from @TheJimmyGraham on "The Arctic Challenge," their historic row across the Arctic Ocean:"The team has officially entered the fjord - just hours from the finish line. After nearly 1,000 km of the Arctic Ocean, the end is finally in sight! Exhausted, soaked, but… pic.twitter.com/lretSULhqE

— New Orleans Saints (@Saints) July 14, 2025

The team began their trek on July 4 from Tromsø, Norway, and arrived in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, on July 14. According to the Arctic Challenge, the average travel time south to north is about 16.5 days.

This journey also wasn't without purpose. The crew set a goal of raising $1 million — one dollar for every meter across the Arctic Ocean — for Covenant House New Orleans and Laureus Sport for Good New Orleans.

This kind of adventure isn't unusual for Graham, who served as lead navigator during the trip. He owns 10 different aviation licenses and is an avid cyclist.

While football might be in the past, Graham has been planning his future, as he told Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan on his podcast in January 2024.

"It just really gives me something to look forward to and something that athletically I can push myself in a new direction," Graham said. "And I don't have to take hits anymore. I can just sit there and just get to work."

A five-time Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro in 2013, Graham recorded two 1,000-plus yard receiving seasons and led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 2013 with 16.

After sitting out the 2022 season, Graham returned to New Orleans on a one-year deal in 2023, his last in the NFL. He played in 13 games and scored four times.

The Pac-12 and Mountain West conferences are headed back to court after failing to reach a settlement agreement in mediation over $55 million in "poaching" fees.

The conferences failed to reach an agreement by Tuesday's deadline in mediation that began in May. The Pac-12 has requested a hearing on the pending motion to dismiss on Sept. 9.

"The Pac-12 remains committed to moving forward with legal action in response to the Mountain West's attempt to impose so-called 'poaching penalties,' provisions we believe are unlawful and intended to obstruct our ability to act in the best interests of our student-athletes and member institutions," the Pac-12 said in a statement.

The Pac-12 and some of the schools it is adding filed lawsuits last year, claiming the poaching clause it agreed to when it signed a scheduling agreement for its football teams for last season was invalid.

The clause called for payments to the Mountain West of $10 million for the first team that left, with the amount growing by $500,000 for every additional team. That was on top of the $17 million-plus exit fees schools were responsible for as part of a different agreement.

"The Mountain West provided the Pac-12 institutions with a lifeline, offering a full football schedule for the 2024 season," the Mountain West said in a statement. "The Pac-12 willingly signed the scheduling agreement with full knowledge of the contractual provisions and is attempting to avoid its legal obligations. The Mountain West will aggressively protect the interests of our member institutions and is fully prepared to hold the Pac-12 accountable."

Colorado State, Utah State, San Diego State, Fresno State and Boise State are all set to join the Pac-12 starting in 2026. The conference added Texas State last month to reach the eight-team minimum to be eligible for an automatic bid for its conference champion in the College Football Playoff.

Oregon State and Washington State are the only remaining members following an exodus last year that threatened the conference's future. The two schools reached a scheduling agreement with the Mountain West schools so they could piece together a football schedule last season.

The Mountain West has added UTEP, Hawaii and Northern Illinois for football starting in 2026.

The 153rd Open Championship is less than 24 hours from teeing off, and a key question is what weather challenges the world's top golfers will encounter at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Royal Portrush is notorious for its unpredictable weather, featuring frequent rain and strong winds, which can potentially influence who ultimately wins the Claret Jug.

On Wednesday, prior to the first round, participants experienced a mix of clouds and sunshine, with light wind gusts ranging from five to ten mph. The high temperature was 67 degrees, while the low dropped to 57 degrees. The first round is expected to bring less favorable weather, with periods of rain and winds reaching 10 to 20 mph. There is a 90% chance of rain, with potential rainfall totaling up to a quarter of an inch.

Here are the latest weather updates and forecasts for Thursday, the first day of the 2025 Open Championship:

With the 2025 college football season just weeks away, it's time to re-familiarize yourself with the myriad transfers that happened during the offseason. After we went through the 10 biggest QB transfers of the offseason, here are 10 other players who are in line to make big impacts in 2025.

LSU WR Nic Anderson (from Oklahoma)

Anderson heads to LSU after he missed nearly all of the 2024 season because of a quad injury. He appeared in just one game for the Sooners last season and didn't have a catch. In 2023, Anderson had 38 grabs for 798 yards and 10 TDs as he averaged over 20 yards a reception. Without Anderson on the field, Oklahoma's offense struggled mightily a season ago.

Anderson should be fully recovered from the quad injury and should also be ready for the season after he was in a single-car wreck on Friday. LSU coach Brian Kelly said Monday at SEC media days that Anderson would miss a week of offseason workouts after he was kept overnight in a hospital for observation.

Zachariah Branch transferred from USC to Georgia. (Photo by Steve Limentani/ISI Photos/Getty Images) (Steve Limentani/ISI Photos via Getty Images)Georgia WR Zachariah Branch (from USC)

Branch can be one of the most dynamic players in college football with the ball in his hands. He averaged 20.8 yards a punt return in 2023 and over 18 yards a kick return as a freshman with the Trojans. As teams realized how good he was returning kicks, they worked to neutralize him in 2024. Branch had 13 punt returns for just 74 yards.

Georgia is looking for a game-breaker at wide receiver and Branch has that potential. However, he really never flashed it on offense at USC. He had 78 catches for 823 yards and just three TDs over 23 games with the Trojans.

Ohio State RB CJ Donaldson (from West Virginia)

The former West Virginia running back has rushed for 30 TDs over the past three seasons. In 2024, he had 163 carries for 734 yards and 11 scores. Donaldson could play an even bigger role for the Buckeyes in 2025 as Ohio State needs to replace both TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins after they were the best running back duo in the country a season ago.

Michigan RB Justice Haynes (from Alabama)

Haynes was Alabama's third-leading rusher in 2024 with 79 carries for 448 yards and seven touchdowns. No matter who starts at QB for Michigan in 2025 — whether it's freshman Bryce Underwood or Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene — the Wolverines figure to have a run-heavy offense once again. And with both Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards off to the NFL, Haynes could have a big year.

Justice Haynes was Alabama's third-leading rusher in 2024. (Photo by Mike Mulholland/Getty Images for ONIT) (Mike Mulholland via Getty Images)Miami CB Xavier Lucas (from Wisconsin)

Lucas was a four-star recruit in the class of 2024 and signed with the Badgers out of high school. After a season in Madison, he's back in south Florida and also the subject of one of the biggest transfer stories of the offseason. In June, Wisconsin filed a lawsuit against Miami for tampering over Lucas' transfer. Wisconsin claims that Miami interfered with a binding revenue-share contract that it had signed with Lucas. How the lawsuit plays out in the coming months could have a significant impact on player movement going forward.

Florida State WR Duce Robinson (from USC)

Robinson had 23 catches for 396 yards and five TDs in 2024 after averaging nearly 22 yards a catch as a freshman in 2023. Florida State desperately needs more offensive firepower after a disastrous 2024 season. The school felt the loss of Keon Coleman on the outside and also had horrendous quarterback play. With Robinson, former Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos and others arriving in Tallahassee, the offense should be much better in 2025. It can't get any worse.

Auburn WR Eric Singleton Jr. (from Georgia Tech)

Singleton had 104 catches for 1,468 yards and nine touchdowns over two seasons with the Yellow Jackets. He also added 21 rushing attempts for 131 yards and a TD in 2024. If Auburn can get improved quarterback play from Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold, Singleton could form a great receiving duo with Cam Coleman. He had 37 grabs for 598 yards and eight scores as a freshman last season.

Oregon S Dillon Thieneman (from Purdue)

Thieneman was one of the rare bright spots at Purdue over the past two seasons. He had 106 tackles and six interceptions as a freshman in 2023 and had 104 tackles as a sophomore in 2024. He didn't have an interception, though he had seven passes defensed and you can understand why opposing offenses wouldn't want to throw in his direction. He will immediately anchor Oregon's secondary as the Ducks go for back-to-back Big Ten titles.

Missouri Edge Damon Wilson (from Georgia)

Wilson had six tackles for loss and three sacks in 14 games for the Bulldogs in 2024. Georgia's front seven is exceptionally deep — he should see more playing time at Missouri. The Tigers have boasted a strong defensive front in recent seasons and need to replace the pass rush production of Johnny Walker Jr. He had 9.5 sacks in 2024 and was the only Mizzou player with more than three.

Oregon OT Isaiah World (from Nevada)

World was the best offensive lineman in the transfer portal and will be counted on to keep Oregon's rushing offense humming in 2025. The Ducks added Tulane RB Makhi Hughes in the transfer portal to help replace Jordan James' production. James rushed for 1,267 yards and 15 TDs in 2024 while Hughes had 1,401 yards and 15 scores with the Green Wave.

Other notable players: Oregon RB Makhi Hughes (from Tulane), Missouri RB Ahmad Hardy (from Louisiana-Monroe), Texas A&M WR Kevin Concepcion (from NC State), Auburn OT Xavier Chaplin (from Virginia Tech), LSU WR Barion Brown (from LSU), Missouri WR Kevin Coleman (from Mississippi State), Nebraska Edge Williams Nwaneri (from Missouri), Ohio State TE Max Klare (from Purdue), Nebraska WR Dane Key (from Kentucky), Ole Miss Edge Princewill Umanmielen (from Nebraska)
