TODAYThe actor -- who was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2023 -- also shares how he and his wife told their six children about his cancer diagnosis, and opens up about their reactions.

James Van Der Beek is sharing an update on his battle with colorectal cancer.

During an interview with TODAY.com, the 48-year-old actor revealed that he'll likely be living with the disease for the "rest of my life." Van Der Beek -- who was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2023 and publicly shared the news last year -- described his cancer battle as a "full-time job."

"I'm just on the journey. ... It's a process. It'll probably be a process for the rest of my life," the Dawson's Creek alum said.

Van Der Beek -- who has not publicly disclosed whether he's undergone typical treatments such as chemotherapy or surgery -- noted that he's made many lifestyle diet changes amid his battle with the disease, including yoga, keto diet, and "finding beauty of just taking things a little bit more slowly and prioritizing rest and really allowing that to be the job."

The 48-year-old reflected on starring in the Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, telling TODAY.com that "the greatest thing about work is cancer doesn't exist between action and cut."

"It was fun to drop in and just have a blast because it's such a great cast, a great production, and everybody out there is really talented," he added.

Last November, Van Der Beek revealed his colorectal cancer diagnosis while speaking with People.

"I have colorectal cancer. I've been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family," he said in an exclusive statement.

"There's reason for optimism, and I'm feeling good," he added.

Per the American Cancer Society, Colorectal cancer starts in the colon or the rectum, which make up the large intestine in the digestive system.

Van Der Beek previously shared that the first symptoms he experienced were bowel changes, before he then underwent a colonsocopy, which ultimately led to his diagnosis.

"I got screened at 46," the Varsity Blues star told TODAY.com. "I didn't realize they had dropped it to 45. I thought I was way ahead of the game."

"Even just the slightest little change, it could be something, but ... don't think that not having symptoms means you don't have to get screened, especially for something that is this curable when caught early," he shared. "That's really what I want to get across."

"I ate as well as I could. I was healthy. I was in amazing cardiovascular shape," he explained. "There was no reason in my mind that I should have gotten a positive diagnosis."

After publicly revealing his diagnosis last year, Van Der Beek said he's even received support from strangers -- several of whom have shared that his diagnosis have inspired them to get screened.

"Guys I see at the gas station, people come up to me at a coffee shop, I appreciate it every time," he said. "That's been stuff that really makes me cry. When people say, 'I got checked, I got a colonoscopy, I got a polyp removed,' ... just to save somebody that journey."

Meanwhile, Van Der Beek opened up about how him and his wife, Kimberly, shared the news of his cancer diagnosis with their six kids during an appearance on the Today show.

The One Tree Hill alum -- who shares Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 11, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 6, Jeremiah, 2, with Kimberly -- said, "I'm far from an expert, but our approach was just be as honest as possible, as honest to the degree of their understanding, right?"

"Because they know. They can sense that Dad's having a tough day. They know if Dad's in pain," he continued. "They know, and so by not telling them I think you'e confusing them even more."

View this post on Instagram

Van Der Beek went on share advice for other parents who may be experiencing a similar struggle, and are finding a way to tell their children about their diagnosis.

"Just allow yourself to be surprised by their resiliency," he explained. "When you tell them what you're doing, and you tell them the approach, they can see it and they can feel it, and I think it's also your journey is their journey."

"Don't rob them of the opportunity for them to show up for you, emotionally," he added. "I have kids making me tea. 'Dad, what do you need?' There's been a lot of beauty that's come out of it, but I would love to save everybody this journey, which is why I'm saying get screened."

During his appearance on the morning show, Van Deer Beek shared that he's "feeling great."

"Today, I'm feeling great, yeah. It's been a journey," he said, adding, "There are just so many ups and downs and so many unknowns. Cancer is, I call it a full-time job."

Moore shares sons Ozzy, 2, and Gus, 4, as well as daughter Lou, 10 months, with husband Taylor Goldsmith

Mandy Moore's family enjoyed some time by the water on their recent trip to Mexico.

The Tangled actress, 41, shared an adorable photo of her family of five on Instagram on Thursday, July 31, as she recounted her time spent at the beach on vacation. In the sweet photo, Moore could be seen sitting in the surf alongside her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, while her son Oscar "Ozzy," 2, hung on around her neck.

Sitting beside the star, her 4-year-old son August "Gus" was pictured squishing his hands into the sand and looking down. Goldsmith propped up the couple's newest addition, 10-month-old daughter Louise "Lou," as she sat in his lap.

Other snaps showed the family enjoying the beach and watching sunsets. "Nothing beats a beach vacation with some of your besties (here's looking you at you @whatsgabycookin)," Moore wrote in her caption. "What an epic few days, @fspuntamita! We can't wait to come back (Gus hasn't stopped talking about it)!!"

Moore recently appeared on Kylie Kelce's podcast Not Gonna Lie and was asked by the podcaster if she got a lot of opinions about having her baby daughter Lou when she was 40.

"Yes and no. I mean, I feel like having my third child at 40, this term 'geriatric pregnancy' that's thrown around. I think at least in my experience, so many of my friends are having kids later in life, whether it's by choice or it's by circumstance or biology," Moore began.

https://ift.tt/LwveIBf

"I think the thing that I had the most trouble with is just like this system in general kind of treating us as this anomaly that we're like too old and we're too complicated or high risk, and really, it's like, 'Nope, we're just human beings.'"

"And I feel like it's just such an outdated label," she continued. "So it's less about how I think the people and the perceptions they may have had, like the people in my life, it was just more about the healthcare system in general. It feels like such an outdated one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to just women in general."

Earlier this year in May, Moore celebrated her first Mother's Day as a mom of three by sharing an Instagram post dedicated to her mom, Stacy Moore, who also has three children. The carousel contained four throwback images of Mandy with her mom, one of which also included her grandma, Eileen.

"Happy Mother's Day to all the moms and mother figures in our lives, including my own mama who juggled 3 kids effortlessly (HOW!??)," she captioned the post, before reflecting on her personal experience with motherhood.

"Being a mom is the single greatest gift of my life and while you're never off the clock worrying or stressing or planning, the quiet, unmistakable joy triumphs over everything else," the actress continued. "I'm endlessly grateful to the moms in my life who model what it takes, lend an ear, make the best suggestions, and generally make me feel less alone on the journey."

Foo Fighters and Nine Inch Nails have swapped drummers.

Just two months after letting go of Josh Freese, the Foos have tapped Nine Inch Nails' Ilan Rubin to get behind their kit, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed. And, on the same day, Nine Inch Nails confirmed to EW that Freese will replace Rubin and come back as their drummer, completing the switch and returning balance to the world.

"Let's f---ing go," Nine Inch Nails wrote on X, sharing a photo of Freese sitting in a chair with a bounty of Nine Inch Nails memorabilia behind him.

Freese, who performed with the "Closer" rockers from 2005 until 2008, will join the group on their Peel It Back tour, which began in June and is slated to run through September. It is unclear if he is back as a full-time member of Nine Inch Nails or just playing for this tour.

The musician opened up about rejoining the band in a poignant Instagram post on Thursday. "Leaving Nine Inch Nails at the end of 2008 was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make," he wrote. "My wife and I were expecting our third child, and I knew I needed to step away from life on the road to be home with my family."

He went on to explain that performing with Nine Inch Nails always left him feeling an unprecedented "level of intensity, pride, and satisfaction after each show that I've rarely experienced" in any other group.

"Now, being back on tour with Trent and the crew — helping them do what they do best night after night — is something I'm incredibly excited about," he added. "To be part of that energy again feels amazing."

Freese concluded, "If you get a chance to catch one of these shows over the next six weeks, I promise, they're going to be absolutely unforgettable, Hope to see you out there."

Freese originally joined Foo Fighters in May 2023, serving as the successor to their longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins after he died unexpectedly at age 50 in 2022. He announced in May that he'd been informed by the band that they had "decided to go in a different direction with their drummer" and would no longer need his services, leaving him "a bit shocked and disappointed."

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl later thanked all of their past drummers — including Freese — for their contributions to the band in a letter celebrating the 30th anniversary of their self-titled album earlier this month.

"It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete," the singer wrote. "So we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen."

Rubin joined Nine Inch Nails in 2009 following Freese's original departure from the band and has served as their touring drummer ever since. He was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2020.

In addition to touring with NIN, Rubin is also the drummer for Blink-182 singer Tom DeLonge's other rock band, Angels & Airwaves, and has worked with Danny Elfman. He joins Foo Fighters as the "My Hero" rockers prepare to embark on a slate of shows in Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico this fall.

Earlier this month, the band also dropped the anthemic tune "Today's Song," which marked their first new music since the release of 2023's But Here We Are.

International outcry over images of emaciated children and increasing reports of hunger-related deaths have pressured Israel to let more aid into the Gaza Strip. This week, Israel paused fighting in parts of Gaza and airdropped food.

But aid groups and Palestinians say the changes have only been incremental and are not enough to reverse what food experts say is a " worst-case scenario of famine" unfolding in the war-ravaged territory.

The new measures have brought an uptick in the number of aid trucks entering Gaza. But almost none of it reaches U.N. warehouses for distribution.

Instead, nearly all the trucks are stripped of their cargo by crowds that overwhelm them on the roads as they drive from the borders. The crowds are a mix of Palestinians desperate for food and gangs armed with knives, axes or pistols who loot the goods to then hoard or sell.

Many have also been killed trying to grab the aid. Witnesses say Israeli troops often open fire on crowds around the aid trucks, and hospitals have reported hundreds killed or wounded. The Israeli military says it has only fired warning shots to control crowds or at people who approach its forces. The alternative food distribution system run by the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has also been marred by violence.

International airdrops of aid have resumed. But aid groups say airdrops deliver only a fraction of what trucks can supply. Also, many parcels have landed in now-inaccessible areas that Palestinians have been told to evacuate, while others have plunged into the Mediterranean Sea, forcing people to swim out to retrieve drenched bags of flour.

Here's a look at why the aid isn't being distributed:

A lack of trust

The U.N. says that longstanding restrictions on the entry of aid have created an unpredictable environment, and that while a pause in fighting might allow more aid in, Palestinians are not confident aid will reach them.

"This has resulted in many of our convoys offloaded directly by starving, desperate people as they continue to face deep levels of hunger and are struggling to feed their families," said Olga Cherevko, a spokesperson for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA.

"The only way to reach a level of confidence is by having a sustained flow of aid over a period of time," she said.

Israel blocked food entirely from entering Gaza for 2 ½ months starting in March. Since it eased the blockade in late May, it allowed in a trickle of aid trucks for the U.N., about 70 a day on average, according to official Israeli figures. That is far below the 500-600 trucks a day that U.N. agencies say are needed — the amount that entered during a six-week ceasefire earlier this year.

Much of the aid is stacked up just inside the border in Gaza because U.N. trucks could not pick it up. The U.N says that was because of Israeli military restrictions on its movements and because of the lawlessness in Gaza.

Israel has argued that it is allowing sufficient quantities of goods into Gaza and tried to shift the blame to the U.N. "More consistent collection and distribution by U.N. agencies and international organizations = more aid reaching those who need it most in Gaza," the Israeli military agency in charge of aid coordination, COGAT, said in a statement this week.

With the new measures this week, COGAT, says 220-270 truckloads a day were allowed into Gaza on Tuesday and Wednesday, and that the U.N. was able to pick up more trucks, reducing some of the backlog at the border.

Aid missions still face 'constraints'

Cherevko said there have been "minor improvements" in approvals by the Israeli military for its movements and some "reduced waiting times" for trucks along the road.

But she said the aid missions are "still facing constraints." Delays of military approval still mean trucks remain idle for long periods, and the military still restricts the routes that the trucks can take onto a single road, which makes it easy for people to know where the trucks are going, U.N officials say.

Antoine Renard, who directs the World Food Program's operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, said Wednesday that it took nearly 12 hours to bring in 52 trucks on a 10-kilometer (6 mile) route.

"While we're doing everything that we can to actually respond to the current wave of starvation in Gaza, the conditions that we have are not sufficient to actually make sure that we can break that wave," he said.

Aid workers say the changes Israel has made in recent days are largely cosmetic. "These are theatrics, token gestures dressed up as progress," said Bushra Khalidi, Oxfam's policy lead for Israel and the Palestinian territories.

"Of course, a handful of trucks, a few hours of tactical pauses and raining energy bars from the sky is not going to fix irreversible harm done to an entire generation of children that have been starved and malnourished for months now," she said.

Breakdown of law and order

As desperation mounts, Palestinians are risking their lives to get food, and violence is increasing, say aid workers.

Muhammad Shehada, a political analyst from Gaza who is a visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said aid retrieval has turned into the survival of the fittest. "It's a Darwin dystopia, the strongest survive," he said.

A truck driver said Wednesday that he has driven food supplies four times from the Zikim crossing on Gaza's northern border. Every time, he said, crowds a kilometer long (0.6 miles) surrounded his truck and took everything on it after he passed the checkpoint at the edge of the Israeli military-controlled border zones.

He said some were desperate people, while others were armed. He said that on Tuesday, for the first time, some in the crowd threatened him with knives or small arms. He spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing for his safety.

Ali al-Derbashi, another truck driver, said that during one trip in July armed men shot the tires, stole everything, including the diesel and batteries and beat him. "If people weren't starving, they wouldn't resort to this," he said.

Israel has said it has offered the U.N. armed escorts. The U.N. has refused, saying it can't be seen to be working with a party to the conflict – and pointing to the reported shootings when Israeli troops are present.

Uncertainty and humiliation

Israel hasn't given a timeline for how long the measures it implemented this week will continue, heightening uncertainty and urgency among Palestinians to seize the aid before it ends.

Palestinians say the way it's being distributed, including being dropped from the sky, is inhumane.

"This approach is inappropriate for Palestinians, we are humiliated," said Rida, a displaced woman.

Momen Abu Etayya said he almost drowned because his son begged him to get aid that fell into the sea during an aid drop.

"I threw myself in the ocean to death just to bring him something," he said. "I was only able to bring him three biscuit packets".

Gavin Casalegno's Dunkin' ad draws backlash for referencing "genetics," with critics calling it a dog whistle for upholding Eurocentric beauty standards

Critics compare the promotion to Sydney Sweeney's controversial American Eagle spot amid eugenics discourse

Some fans defend the ad as harmless and tied to his Summer I Turned Pretty character

Dunkin's new commercial starring Gavin Casalegno is the latest ad to spark heated debate over its alleged underlying tones following the Sydney Sweeney and American Eagle campaign controversy.

The Summer I Turned Pretty actor, 25, is featured in an ad promoting one of the breakfast chain's newest Refresher drinks, the Golden Hour Refresher. The video, posted to Dunkin's social channels on July 29, stars Casalegno poolside, where he hails himself as "King of Summer."

"This tan? Genetics," he says, as he strolls around the pool. "I just got my color analysis back. Guess what? Golden summer, literally!"

As he sits on a pool lounge chair, he adds, "I can't help it. Every time I drink a Dunkin' Golden Hour Refresher, it's like the sun just finds me. So if sipping these refreshers makes me the king of summer? Guilty as charged."

What seemed to be a light-hearted, summertime campaign from the brand ultimately led to questions from online users on the intended messaging in light of the American Eagle ad that became a talking point in heated online discussions on eugenics signaling.

Here are all the details on Casalegno's Dunkin' campaign.

Sara Jaye Weiss/Getty Images for DUNKIN'

Gavin Casalegno shoots for DUNKIN's Golden Hour RefresherGavin Casalegno's Dunkin' commercial: Why are people upset?

The latest ad starring Casalegno comes on the heels of an American Eagle ad featuring Sweeney. In the fall campaign titled "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,", the actress is seen lying down and zipping up her jeans, saying, "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color."

When the camera pans up to her face, Sweeney adds, "My jeans are blue," followed by a voiceover that says, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans." Critics claim the use of "jeans" is a double entendre in reference to her "genes," which led many to draw connections to eugenics and the open promotion of a superior bloodline.

Defined by the National Institute of Health (NIH), and debunked as a pseudoscience, eugenics "is broadly defined as the use of selective breeding to improve the human race."

Casalegno references his "genetics" while highlighting his tan, which critics have slammed as reinforcing Eurocentric beauty standards, as suspected of the American Eagle campaign.

"Why are ads so obsessed with genetics all of a sudden?" a TikTok user commented on Dunkin's post. Another user questioned, "Genuinely, what does a drink have to do with genetics?"

In light of the ongoing American Eagle discussion, the Dunkin' ad's timing has not gone unnoticed, with critics calling it ill-timed.

What else are critics saying?

The discourse surrounding the Dunkin' ad has quickly spread to Reddit, where many swarmed the celebrity-focused subreddit r/Fauxmoi to comment on the script of the ad altogether, calling it "word salad."

"I'm failing to see the connection from genetics to colour analysis to sunshine to he loves to drink dunkin drink??" a Redditor wrote in response to another commenting, "Wouldn't shock me if they had AI write it up."

Critics are calling the specific phrasing a dog whistle to netizens who believe in a superior skin tone and eye color, as Casalegno makes mention of his golden tan coming from his "genetics."

"While the Dunkin' ad's mention of genetics is subtler, it has struck a nerve for praising traits associated with white beauty ideals while mentioning genetics," explained Elena Cavender from AdWeek. "In the ad, Casalengo says, 'This tan? Genetics. I just got my color analysis back and guess what? Golden summer.' Color analysis refers to the beauty trend of picking colors that look best on based on skin tone."

Why are some defending the campaign?

Though the backlash seems to be overwhelming, there are fans of the star and the show who have expressed that the outpour of negative comments towards the ad and Casalegno is forced and "a stretch," especially for those who may not watch the Prime Video series, The Summer I Turned Pretty.

"This ad is not about eugenics, it's about the golden summer and the drink," said one TikTok user. "Is it bad timing? Could they have waited? … But there are deadlines they had to meet and they probably wanted to get this out before the end of summer, because he's in the show The Summer I Turned Pretty."

The TikToker goes on to say that "if this had been released before the Sydney Sweeney ad, we would not be having this conversation," and explains that in the show, Casalegno's character, Jeremiah, enjoys the Taylor Swift song titled "Golden" and is known for being the more "outdoorsy, athletic, tan type."

Has Gavin Casalegno responded?

Casalegno has not made a formal statement in response to the controversy around the ad.

Dunkin' and Casalegno have not responded to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

Renee Straker July 31, 2025 at 4:27 PM

As blistering heat gave way to thunderstorms in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, dangerous flash floods swamped roads and trapped drivers in some parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York on Thursday.

Heavy rain pounded the I-95 corridor throughout the afternoon and evening commute, with the potential for more than 2 inches of rain per hour. The storms grounded flights at multiple airports across the region including Reagan National, Baltimore-Washington International, Washington-Dulles International and Newark International.

Here's the latest on the impacts of the torrential rain.

(MORE: See The Full Forecast)

Maryland

Multiple water rescues were reported in Joppatowne, Maryland, about 40 minutes outside of Baltimore early Thursday afternoon. Photos on social media showed washed out streets, and officials have asked drivers not to attempt to drive through standing water. Emergency officials in Harford said northern parts of the county got 3 inches of rain in 30 minutes.

Baltimore City Schools dismissed their summer programs at 2 p.m. Thursday due to the flooding threat. By around 5 p.m. local time the rain was coming down at 3 to 5 inches an hour in the Baltimore area.

A ground stop was issued at Baltimore-Washington International Airport due to the storms, until at least 6 p.m.

Pennsylvania

In Reading, Pennsylvania, cars were seen stranded in rushing floodwaters Thursday afternoon. Flash flood warnings were in effect in parts of Berks, Bucks, Montogmery and Lehigh counties.

New Jersey

In New Jersey, acting Governor Tahesha Way declared a State of Emergency ahead of the potential flash flooding across that state. Her announcement warned of as much as 7 inches of rain in some areas, along with damaging wind gusts.

By early Thursday afternoon, there were reports of flooding shutting down parts of highway US 22 in both directions in North Plainfield.

New York

In Queens, New York, vehicles were seen submerged along the Clearview Expressway. New York Police said the expressway was "fully closed" in both directions at North Boulevard. Heading into rush hour, significant portions of the borough were impassable due to flooding.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State of Emergency for New York City, and the surrounding counties. Gov. Hochul encouraged employers to dismiss workers early since the flooding was expected to impact the evening commute.

The Long Island Railroad announced on X that service was suspended in both directions on the Port Washington Branch line due to high water. Video shared on social media showed floodwaters pouring over a stairway at a station in Great Neck, New York.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority also warned subway and bus riders to give themselves extra time for their commutes because of the heavy rain.

This is a developing story. Check back here for updates.

The Girls creator just delivered her most honest take yet on how the entertainment industry transforms women's relationships with their bodies, revealing how careers can become consumed by cosmetic procedures and appearance anxiety.

Speaking on the Shut Up Evan podcast, the 39-year-old writer-director shared a raw perspective that many women in entertainment can relate to but rarely voice so candidly. While discussing recent paparazzi photos from her film set, Dunham explained how the industry pressures women into constant physical modification.

"There are people who grew up feeling free in their bodies, who suddenly when they start to work in a field like this, their entire life becomes about nips and tucks," Dunham explained, highlighting how Hollywood can corrupt even the most confident women's self-image.

Her comments came after being caught in paparazzi crossfire while filming alongside Natalie Portman. Dunham found herself photographed wearing a baggy Uniqlo t-shirt and boxer shorts – comfortable work attire that could have sent image-obsessed performers into months of anxiety. Instead, she used the moment to illustrate her point about maintaining perspective.

The New York native reflected on how appearance fixation can derail professional focus entirely. As host Evan Ross Katz noted, suddenly women find themselves "waking up and instead of focusing on directing the film, it's what am I wearing to set today."

Dunham's experience with paparazzi harassment during her Girls era provided particularly brutal context. She recalled a photographer once screaming "You're no Sarah Jessica Parker" at her – a moment she now wears as a badge of honor, responding with gratitude rather than devastation.

Her willingness to discuss these pressures while acknowledging that "everyone has to do what they have to do to feel happy in their bodies" shows remarkable nuance. She's not shaming anyone's choices but rather exposing how the industry creates environments where appearance becomes all-consuming.

What makes Dunham's commentary so valuable is her insider perspective combined with her commitment to body acceptance. Having navigated Hollywood success while refusing to conform to traditional beauty standards, she offers unique insight into the psychological toll of constant scrutiny.

Her message resonates beyond entertainment – any woman in a visual profession can relate to the pressure of being constantly photographed and judged on appearance rather than work quality.
