BOSTON (AP) — Romy Gonzalez homered over the Green Monster on the first pitch faced by a Boston batter, Trevor Story added a two-run shot, and the Red Sox beat the Houston Astros 7-3 on Saturday.

Abraham Toro added a two-run drive — one of three homers the Red Sox hit over Fenway Park's fabled left-field wall — and Story added an RBI double as Boston won its third straight.

Houston's Christian Walker homered for the second straight day, a two-run shot off Walker Buehler in the first inning.

The benches and bullpens cleared when Astros reliever Héctor Neris yelled at the Red Sox dugout and third-base coach Kyle Hudson at the end of the seventh. But order was quickly restored.

After beating the AL West leaders on Roman Anthony's walk-off single in the series opener on Friday night, the Red Sox erased a quick 2-0 deficit when Story hit his drive in a three-run third against Colton Gordon (4-4) that pushed Boston ahead 4-2.

Story's shot hit the top of a billboard over the Monster seats and bounced out of Fenway after Rob Refsnyder's RBI single.

Justin Wilson (3-1) came on in the fifth inning with runners on second and third with Boston leading 6-3 and struck out the only two batters he faced. Aroldis Chapman got the final two outs for his 20th save.

Gordon gave up six runs in four-plus innings.

Key moment

The Astros loaded the bases in the eighth against Jordan Hicks, but Carlos Correa struck out looking on a 99 mph fastball.

Key stat

Boston's bullpen went 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

Up next

Astros LHP Framber Valdez (11-4, 2.62 ERA) is set to face Red Sox RHP Lucas Giolito (7-2, 3.80) on Sunday in the series finale.

The Minnesota Lynx's dominance was on display Saturday with a 111-58 victory over the Las Vegas Aces, but the historic win was mitigated by forward Napheesa Collier leaving the game with a right ankle injury.

Collier twisted her ankle after inadvertently colliding with teammate Alanna Smith under the basket on a rebound attempt with 10.8 seconds remaining in the third quarter and the Lynx up by 43 points. An emotional Collier remained down on the floor at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas and was surrounded by players from both teams before unsuccessfully attempting to stand on her own.

Collier was able to walk off the court with assistance and went to the locker room. She was ruled out the remainder of the game with a right ankle injury, finishing with 18 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals in the largest road win in WNBA history.

Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve said it's "just way too early" to provide an injury update for Collier following the win, but noted that the five-time All-Star will undergo imaging and evaluations per team protocol.

Reeve added, "We'll worry until we know more."

Collier scored 14 of her 18 points in the third quarter before she got injured. The Lynx had amassed such a large lead that Aces coach Becky Hammon pulled her starters with 5:22 seconds remaining in the third as the Aces trailed by 33 points.

When asked if Lynx starter should have been pulled earlier in the game, Reeve said, "No."

"It's the third quarter of a game on someone else's floor. I don't think the game is over. I don't think like that. (Collier) had a sub there and she wasn't going to play the fourth quarter. Sometimes these things happen," Reeve said postgame. "I get it. People are going to rail on me and that's part of sitting in the seat that I'm sitting in. We did what we think was right. Sometimes these things happen and it's unfortunate and hopefully she will be OK."

Minnesota win by 53 points is the second biggest blowout in WNBA history, second only to the Lynx's 59-point victory over the Indiana Fever on Aug. 18, 2017.

Kayla McBride finished with a team-high 24 points after starting 8-of-8 from 3-point range. Minnesota finished with a franchise-high 17 3-pointers in the win, with two coming from Collier.

"You hate to see anyone go down, especially your MVP," McBride said. "When we see Phee go down, we see Phee the person before the basketball player. Just wishing the best for her. Speedy recovery. We just want her to be healthy. She's had such an amazing season and she's just so impactful for us on both ends of the floor."

McBride said Collier was "in good spirits" in the locker room.

Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier (24) dribbles against the Las Vegas Aces during the first quarter at Michelob Ultra Arena on Aug 2, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Collier is the MVP frontrunner. She's averaging a career-high and league-leading 23.8 points through 25 games. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year also ranks among the top five in the league in steals (1.8 per game) and blocks (1.7 per game).

Minnesota faces Seattle (Aug. 5) and Washington (Aug. 8) before three consecutive games against the Liberty (Aug. 10, 16 and 19.)

Jerry Jones talked for a while Saturday, but had one overall message for Dallas Cowboys fans in the wake of Micah Parsons' trade request: don't panic.

The Cowboys owner told reporters he isn't considering granting Parsons' request and insisted this was still part of the negotiations for the All-Pro pass rusher's next contract in Dallas. From The Athletic's Jon Machota:

"I wouldn't be standing here with you if I didn't think we potentially had a great future with Micah [Parsons] We're in good shape. This is negotiation. But make no mistake about it, life has to go on if something happens to me or anybody else. Life does go on."

Jones also reportedly said Parsons' contract offer from March is off the table — "Micah took it off" — and that "relationship is what it is ... I like Micah" when asked if the relationship was salvageable.

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

And as for his message to a currently upset Cowboys fanbase, via Nick Harris of the Star-Telegram:

"I would say to our fans, don't lose any sleep over this."

Meanwhile, some of those Cowboys fans were letting Jones know what they thought about the situation:

"We Want Micah" chants get louder as practice No. 9 comes to a close. pic.twitter.com/nXr4dE2Nw1

— Joseph Hoyt (@JoeJHoyt) August 2, 2025

As Jones often likes to note, he's been in this kind of situation before and usually comes out of it with a newly extended player, though sometimes at a price a little higher than expected.

In a lengthy statement announcing his trade request, Parsons claimed Jones and the Cowboys have been mostly radio silent in response to multiple attempts by his camp to engage them on contract negotiations. Jones and Parsons met in March to discuss their future, but no deal resulted and the two sides are now reported to be wide apart on terms of a possible deal.

Parsons has not held out from Cowboys workouts or training camps, though he has missed drills recently due to a back injury. Jones said, "I wish the back would get better," in response to the injury, with tongue possibly in cheek.

How expensive will Micah Parsons get for the Cowboys?

Parsons' first contract after his rookie deal has loomed for years, with the price only going higher as his peers land progressively larger extensions. Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby got a three-year, $106.5 million deal in March, with a $35.5 million average annual value that made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns broke that record days later with a four-year, $160 million deal ($40 million per year). And then Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt took the record for himself with a three-year, $123 million extension ($41 million per year).

At 26 years old, Parsons is younger than all three of those players and has been one of the best defensive players in the NFL since his first game with the Cowboys. Odds are high he's looking to set his own record, but even if he somehow doesn't, it's not going to be cheap for Jones.

Parsons is playing this season on the $24 million fifth-year option of his rookie contract and is technically a pending unrestricted free agent, though it can be assumed the Cowboys will hit him with the franchise tag as many times as needed to keep him in Dallas.

EUGENE, OR – No hurdles? No problem for Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

McLaughlin-Levrone ditched the hurdles to run the open 400 this season – and so, far so good.

McLaughlin-Levrone ran around the track with a comfortable lead down the home stretch and crossed the finish line with a season-best of 48.90 to win the gold medal at the U.S. track and field championships.

"I wanted to challenge myself," McLaughlin-Levrone said following the win. "I felt like this is the year I wanted to step out of the box and really push myself in a different way."

Isabella Whittaker placed second (49.59) and Aaliyah Butler got third (49.91) to capture the two other qualifying sports for next month's world championships in Tokyo, Japan.

— NBC Olympics & Paralympics (@NBCOlympics) August 2, 2025

For McLaughlin-Levrone, her main competition Saturday was her quest to achieve the women's 400 American record. Sanya Richards owns the record (48.70) which has stood since 2006.

It would be quite the feat for already the top women's track and field athlete in the country. Her resume includes four Olympic gold medals and she's the current world-record holder in the 400-meter hurdles.

McLaughlin-Levrone's impressive performance -- without being pushed much by the other competitors -- shows she's inching closer at owning another record in an event that she still calls "foreign" to her.

"Everyone talks about the American record of course, that's gonna come when it's supposed to come," McLaughlin-Levrone said. "I think I learned a lot about myself. I think I learned a lot about the 400. But ultimately, every day it's stepping on the track and being the best I can be, figuring out a race that is very foreign to me and taking on new challenges and being comfortable with the 400."

McLaughlin-Levrone's performance currently ranks her third in the world in the 400.

Sha'Carri Richardson arrested in alleged domestic violence incident, police say

It's only a matter of time before she achieves the American record, and possibly, becomes the best 400-meter runner in the world as she is with the hurdles in front of her.

USA TODAY Sports is on the ground at the U.S. track and field championships and has the highlights from day three at Hayward Field:

Jacory Patterson wins men's 400

Patterson used to work at UPS and now he's a national champion.

The sprinter won his first ever national championship in the 400, running a 44.16. Patterson currently ranks third in the world as he now sets his sights on Tokyo.

"It feels like a dream. I put in the work," Patterson said. "I give all thanks to the man above and my support system. They are the ones who got me here."

Patterson used to split time between training on the track and working shifts at UPS. He's since earned enough money to focus on the 400.

"My last day was June 5," Patterson said with a smile.

Russell separated from the field midway through the race and clocked in at 12.22 to win gold in the women's 100-meter hurdles.

Grace Stark (12.31) and Alaysha Johnson (12.36) came in second and third, respectively.

Russell gestured as if to put a crown on herself after winning the race in convincing fashion. The defending Olympic champion is ranked No. 1 in the world in the 100 hurdles.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame added four members Saturday, with Jared Allen, Sterling Sharpe, Antonio Gates and Eric Allen enshrined as the Class of 2025 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

The four new inductees received their signature gold jackets during a dinner Friday night. Prior to the quartet giving acceptance speeches on stage, the ceremony honored host Chris Berman, who emceed the Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony for the 25th time. Pittsburgh Steelers legend Lynn Swann, Class of 2001, presented Berman with a silver anniversary football.

Coach Marv Levy, also part of the 2001 class, was recognized for his 100th birthday, which is Sunday. Thurman Thomas, Class of 2007, who played for Levy from 1988-97 with the Buffalo Bills, called him "the best coach I ever had."

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

Jared Allen was the first of the inductees to take the stage. He was presented by his father, Ron Allen. Wearing a cowboy hat, Allen joked that he felt bad about giving bad advice — such as eating three jalapeno peppers before a game — to parents who asked for tips to a successful football career.

Finally enshrined in his fifth year of eligibility, Allen thanked his wife for elevating him and their two daughters, whom he called "his legacy."

From Yahoo Sports' Frank Schwab:

"[Allen] was entertaining as a player, with 136 career sacks during stints with the Vikings, Chiefs, Bears and Panthers, and also unapologetically himself. His famous calf-roping celebration after sacks was a part of who he was, and maybe the most memorable part of a great career."

Up next was Sterling Sharpe. Appropriately, he was presented by his brother, Shannon Sharpe, Class of 2011. The two now comprise the first brother tandem to be inducted into Canton.

Sharpe thanked his mother for giving him the name "Sterling," which helped him stand out as a young Black man in rural south Georgia and inspired him. He also thanked the women in his life for helping him get to where he is, including his two sisters.

Schwab on Sharpe:

"Sharpe won the NFL's receiving triple crown in 1992, leading the NFL with 108 catches, 1,461 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 108 receptions set an NFL single-season record. He broke that record the following season with 112 catches. In his final season, he caught a league-best 18 touchdowns."

Sharpe, who was forced to retire in 1994 because of a neck injury, was followed by Eric Allen, who was presented by his oldest son, Austin. Allen thanked his mother and grandmother for teaching him kindness and instilling a work ethic, and also thanked his three sons.

Allen played three seasons for the New Orleans Saints and four with the Oakland Raiders, but singled out the Philadelphia Eagles and owner Jeffrey Lurie. Allen was drafted by the Eagles and played seven seasons with the team.

Schwab on Allen:

"Allen was one of the best cover corners of his era. He wasn't the biggest player, at 5-foot-10, 184 pounds, but he was quick and had tremendous anticipation. When quarterbacks threw his way, he often ended up with his hands on the ball. Allen had 54 interceptions and returned eight of them for touchdowns. He led the NFL in pick 6s in 1993 and again in 2000."

The ceremony's final speaker was Antonio Gates, who was presented by Los Angeles Chargers owner Dean Spanos. With 116 touchdown catches, Gates is the NFL's all-time leader in that category for tight ends. He made sure to thank quarterbacks Doug Flutie, Drew Brees and notably Philip Rivers, who threw 89 of those TD passes.

Schwab on Gates:

"Gates' path to the Hall of Fame is literally unlike any other. The longtime Chargers tight end is the first one to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a player without appearing in a college football game, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. There's at least a little more history for undrafted players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Before Gates, 22 players went from undrafted to a bust in Canton."

The Pro Football Hall of Fame now has 382 members, including the Class of 2025.

All of them were arguably overdue to be honored for their careers and enshrined in Canton. Yet that likely won't be remembered amid the fond memories of being recognized for their achievements and getting the opportunity to publicly acknowledged those who helped lift them to football immortality.

Safid Deen, USA TODAY August 3, 2025 at 2:21 AM

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Lionel Messi knew he was injured the moment he tripped and fell on the pitch, rolling over to slap the ground in frustration.

Messi slowly walked from the penalty area across midfield, in front of Inter Miami's bench as his frustration slowly boiled over. He slapped the back of his hips once, then slowly dropped to the pitch.

Messi laid on his back, looking up at the sky – as fans grew concerned inside Chase Stadium before he sat up so a trainer could begin working on the inside of his inner right thigh.

Messi suffered the upper-leg injury less than 10 minutes into Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match against Liga MX side Necaxa on Saturday, Aug. 2.

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano will likely address Messi's injury status after the match.

Messi has dealt with recurring muscle injuries in the upper leg area during the later stages of his career, including Inter Miami's run in the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this summer.

Against Necaxa on Saturday, Messi tripped while running past Necaxa defenders Raúl Sánchez and Alexis Peña toward the penalty area in the 6th minute of the match.

Messi waited until there was a stoppage in play to take a moment to rest on the pitch before he was evaluated. He took off the captain's armband and was substituted out in the 11th minute, replaced by midfielder Federico Redondo, and walked on his own toward Inter Miami's locker rooms.

It was the second match in four days for Messi, who returned to action after having a week off. He skipped the MLS All-Star Game on July 23, then served a one-game suspension for skipping it on July 26.

Messi had two assists leading Inter Miami to victory in their first Leagues Cup match against Atlas on July 30, but he complained of fatigue in the first half of the game due to his layoff.

"Even if (the rest) seems better, for me it's worse because I need to compete. I feel good physically the more matches I play and get into rhythm," Messi told Apple TV. "The other day they didn't let me compete, and I felt it in the first half, but the important thing is that we won."

Before Messi's layoff, he played every minute in 22 of 23 matches with Inter Miami.

Lionel Messi (10) is looked at by trainers after he was injured during the game against Necaxa.

Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas said during a recent press conference: "Load management is on Lionel Messi. … When he steps on the pitch, he will step off when the final whistle blows."

Messi's injury is a clear blow to Inter Miami – which sits in fifth place in the MLS Eastern Conference with 42 points despite winning the Supporters' Shield last season.

It's also a blow to the Leagues Cup tournament, which thrives off Messi's presence. Messi led Inter Miami to the Leagues Cup title in 2023, but did not play in the 2024 tournament due to an ankle injury suffered during Copa America.

Leagues Cup executive director Thomas Mayo told USA TODAY Sports that Apple TV has experienced over 100% increase in viewership during the first week of the 2025 tournament, with Inter Miami's opening match ranking in the Top 3 on MLS Season Pass this year.

After the Necaxa match, Inter Miami will play Pumas on Aug. 6 in their final match of the Leagues Cup group stage.

Inter Miami will play two regular-season matches – at Orlando City on Aug. 10, and at home against the L.A. Galaxy on Aug. 16 – before the Leagues Cup quarterfinals on Aug. 19 and 20, if they qualify for the knockout stage.

This story will be when more information becomes available.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi exited Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa on Saturday night after suffering an apparent injury in the opening minutes.

Messi appeared to get tripped going for the ball in the eighth minute, fell to the ground and slammed his fist in frustration before walking toward midfield as play continued.

He then sat on the pitch as trainers came and worked on his upper leg/right thigh area for a couple of minutes.

He was subbed out in the 11th for Federico Redondo and immediately headed to the locker room.

Miami went up 1-0 a couple minutes later on a goal by Telasco Segovia, which was assisted by Rodrigo De Paul.
