SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A day after announcing his imminent departure from Tottenham after 10 years with the club, Son Heung-min was given an emotional farewell Sunday by his teammates, Newcastle players and almost 65,000 fans at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

The pre-season friendly in South Korea between the Premier League teams ended 1-1, with the high point being Son's second-half exit in likely his last game for Tottenham. The 33-year-old captain was surrounded by both sets of players before eventually sitting on the bench in tears.

"First we had the walk around and then the teammates gathered around and he was emotional," Tottenham coach Thomas Frank said. "In the changing room it was more of the same. I just said a few things but not much because it's about Sonny and then he said a few things. It was beautiful."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also paid tribute to the South Korea forward.

"The reaction was instinctive from my players. I think that speaks volumes about him," Howe said. "I think he's seen as one of the game's great Premier League players. It's not just the talent he has but the way he has carried himself over the years."

Son, who has been linked with a move to Los Angeles FC, scored 173 goals in 454 games for the London club but was unable to find the target in what Frank said is likely to be his last appearance.

His trademark "camera" goal celebration was, however, borrowed by Brennan Johnson who put Tottenham ahead after four minutes with a low shot from the edge of the area.

Harvey Barnes leveled for Newcastle seven minutes before the break, cutting in from the left to fire powerfully home.

Maddison injured

With less than 10 minutes remaining, Tottenham's James Maddison was stretchered off after going down injured.

"We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before," Frank said.

The midfielder is likely to miss the UEFA Super Cup between Europa League winner Tottenham against Champions League victor Paris Saint-Germain on Aug. 13. The Premier League season starts two days later.

Lando Norris won a riveting Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, cutting fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri's lead in the championship standings to 9 points in the last Formula 1 race before the summer break.

The race delivered a tense final few laps, with the two title rivals fighting neck and neck for victory until the very last corner of the final lap. Wading through traffic and back markers, Norris fended off a charging Piastri despite having older and worn tires.

"I'm dead. I'm dead! That was tough," Norris said in a postrace interview broadcast on ESPN. "That was tough, the final stint with Oscar catching — I was pushing flat out," he added, calling the result more "rewarding" after that intense fight.

The victory was a statement from Norris, a sign that he isn't ready to loosen his grip on the championship trophy. It was also a confidence boost after an often-troubled season: Norris, who entered the season as the favorite, has often proved himself to be the faster driver, but he's been prone to errors that have cost him valuable points against the steely and more consistent Piastri.

"We're so tightly fought, it's hard to say the momentum's on anyone's side," he said. "It's tough but fun racing against Oscar."

The Formula 1 world championship battle has solidified into a one-on-one showdown between the two McLaren rivals. Heading into the nearly monthlong summer break, Piastri has 284 points to Norris' 275.

Reigning four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull sits in a distant third with 187 points; his hopes for a fifth title are all but finished. He finished a lowly ninth place in Hungary.

Piastri made an ambitious lunge on Norris in the penultimate lap, but overdid it and locked his front wheel, nearly crashing into his teammate. He was given a gentle reprimand by his team on the radio: "Remember how we go racing."

"I pushed as hard as I could," Piastri said after the race. "The car really came alive in the second half of the race."

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella discussed the radio message to Piastri in an interview with F1TV after the race.

"The reminder was for both: one, make sure you don't dive into the inside too aggressively. The other one, don't move under braking," Stella said, adding that he understands both are fighting for the title. "It's fair that they try their best, but all these should happen within our principles."

It was the fourth consecutive race where the McLaren drivers finished first and second, showing the dominance of the papaya-colored team this year, which scored its 200th victory in F1 on Sunday. Mercedes' George Russell finished in third place after a feisty battle for the final podium position.

Leclerc wins pole but loses it in the race

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc captured a shock pole position on Saturday and comfortably led away from Piastri and Norris at the start, after they qualified in second and third place.

Norris got a decent start and pulled to the inside of Piastri before his teammate moved to cut him off, compromising Norris and costing him two positions in the opening corners.

Piastri's move kept him ahead of his rival at the start and gave him preferential treatment for the first pit stop. But Norris' camp spiced things up by gambling on a one-stop strategy, pitting him later, on lap 31. When Piastri pitted again, on lap 46, he came out about 12 seconds behind Norris — but carrying tires that were 14 laps younger to fight with.

Piastri then overtook Leclerc, making it a two-person race at the front between the championship rivals. He closed up behind Norris and attacked him, but failed to get past.

"After I saw Lando going for a one [stop], I knew I was going to have to overtake on track, which is must easier said than done around here," Piastri said. "I tried a few things. It was a gamble either way. And today unfortunately we were just on the wrong side of it."

Hungary was the race that foreshadowed their rivalry one year ago. Piastri pulled ahead at the start, but Norris took the position back at the pit stops due to strategic decisions by McLaren. Then the team ordered Norris to slow down and let Piastri overtake him for the win — which he did after resisting it for many laps. It was a dramatic and controversial sequence that led to Piastri's first Grand Prix victory in Formula 1. Overall, Norris comfortably beat the younger Piastri throughout the 2024 season, but fell short to Verstappen in his bid for the championship.

This year, the McLaren drivers have been more evenly matched. A series of midrace radio messages between the McLaren drivers and their race engineers crystallized the battle.

After dipping a wheel into the gravel, Lando was told to "just keep the focus — you don't want those mistakes." It came one race after Norris was similarly put on a different tire strategy but made a few crucial errors that prevented him from challenging Piastri.

Piastri, meanwhile, was asked midrace whether he wants the strategy to focus on challenging Leclerc for the win or fending off Norris for second place. Piastri's response was telling: "If you still think beating Lando is realistic, then: doing that."

"I don't really care about Leclerc," Piastri added on team radio a few laps later. "I just want the best chance to try and beat Lando. That's the important thing at the moment."

It's all about the world championship.

Verstappen says he's staying at Red Bull

The race weekend also put an end to two of the biggest open questions in the sport.

Verstappen, the reigning four-time world champion, told reporters he will stay with the embattled Red Bull team next season, finally settling persistent questions about whether he will jump ship to Mercedes.

Ferrari announced it is re-signing team principal Frédéric Vasseur to a "multiple-year contract," ending some recent speculation about the Italian team's leadership.

But all was not well with the team this weekend. Leclerc voiced his frustration with the team's decision-making midrace as his hopes of victory faded. Leclerc ultimately lost third place on lap 62, when Russell overtook him.

And Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, qualified 12th in Hungary before calling himself "useless" while speaking to reporters. Hamilton finished in 12th place.

The next F1 race is on Aug. 31 in the Netherlands.

WNBA-leading Minnesota acquired DiJonai Carrington in a trade Sunday from the Dallas Wings for Diamond Miller, Karlie Samuelson and the Lynx's second-round pick in 2027.

Carrington averaged 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 20 games for the Wings, who acquired her from Connecticut in February as part of a four-team trade. This is the fifth WNBA season for the 5-foot-11 guard/forward.

Miller, the No. 2 overall pick by the Lynx in the draft two years ago, is averaging 4.1 points a game this season. Since scoring 12.1 points a game as a rookie in 2023, the 6-3 forward from Maryland has averaged only 3.5 points in 47 games the past two seasons.

Samuelson hasn't played since June 29 because of surgery on her left foot after playing only 16 games for the Lynx, who got the 6-foot guard from Washington in April. She played four games for Dallas in 2019.

The Wings waived 6-7 center Teaira McCowan, a seven-year WNBA veteran, to make room on the roster for the additions. McCowan averaged 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 17 games this season.

Minnesota is 24-5 this season. The Wings, with No. 1 overall draft pick Paige Bueckers, have lost eight of their last 10 games and are 8-21.

Did you feel the earthquake? Text us and tell us about it at (404) 793-7182.

Just after 10 p.m. on Saturday night, a surprising jolt shook the New York City metro area as a 3.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey.

The epicenter of the quake was only eight miles from Central Park – close enough for thousands of New Yorkers to feel the ground tremble.

While the U.S. Geological Survey says the quake wasn't strong enough to cause much damage, its location in such a densely packed region made it more impactful.

The agency's "Did You Feel It?" map shows a wide range of reports, spanning the area around the New York/New Jersey border.

Graphic showing earthquake felt across New York City

New York City Emergency Management confirmed there was no major damage reported.

This quake was a far cry from the stronger 4.8-magnitude quake that hit New Jersey in 2024. However, earthquakes of any size are somewhat rare in the Northeast, making this one notable despite its lack of destruction.

Weather.com lead editor Jenn Jordan explores how weather and climate weave through our daily lives, shape our routines and leave lasting impacts on our communities.

Live updates: MLB Speedway Classic resumes after Braves-Reds suspended by rain

Steve Gardner, USA TODAY August 3, 2025 at 11:30 PM

After the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves were unable to make it through the first inning on Saturday night, the two teams return to Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 3, to complete MLB's inaugural Speedway Classic.

The history-making clash is the first-ever major league game in the state of Tennessee and the first to be held at a NASCAR track. But the record 85,000-plus fans expected to be in attendance only got a small taste of the action as persistent rain delayed the start of the game for over two hours and forced MLB officials to suspend the contest with the Reds leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

Cincinnati scored a single run for the second consecutive inning with Matt McLain -- who scored the game's first run on Saturday night -- driving in the Reds' second one on a sacrifice fly.

Catcher Tyler Stephenson drew a one-out walk, went to second on a single by Ke'Bryan Hayes and moved to third on a walk to TJ Friedl. McLain's fly ball to center field was deep enough for Stephenson to come home and cut the deficit to one run.

Top 2nd: Braves 3, Reds 1

Braves right fielder Eli White flipped the script in the top of the second inning as Atlanta mounted a two-out rally.

Following singles by Michael Harris and Ozzie Albies, White -- playing in place of injured All-Star Ronald Acuña Jr. -- deposited Brent Suter's changeup into the left field stands for a three-run homer.

Much better conditions are on tap for the resumption of MLB's Speedway Classic. Sunday afternoon's forecast from The Weather Channel calls for mostly cloudy skies and the possibility of occasional light showers. Temperatures will hover in the low 70s.

Reds' Tyler Stephenson pays tribute to 'Talladega Nights'

Even though the two teams didn't even finish the first inning, there was one winner last night: Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson.

The inevitable comparisons between baseball and NASCAR throughout the broadcast couldn't compare to Stephenson's catching gear he had specifically created for this game.

Stephenson paid tribute to Will Farrell's firesuit from the movie "Talladega Nights" with his Wonder Bread-inspired chest protector. And he continued the theme with some colorful cleats.

"I was just thinking of stuff to do and reached out to the EvoShield people," Stephenson told MLB.com. "I was thinking of a NASCAR theme – and 'Talladega Nights.' It's a classic movie. They did a great job and decided to wear it."

Braves, Reds make lineup, roster changes

The suspension of the Speedway Classic on Saturday night has forced both teams to make some pitching changes before they return to the field.

The Braves have promoted right-hander Hurston Waldrep from the minors and will have him take over on the mound with one out in the bottom of the first inning. Waldrep had been scheduled to start on Sunday for Class AAA Gwinnett.

The Reds have promoted pitcher Lyon Richardson from Class AAA Louisville and optioned outfielder Will Benson to give them an additional arm for the game. Manager Terry Francona said veteran reliever Brent Suter will take over when the Reds take the field in the top of the second.

Speedway Classic weather issues

Reds second baseman Matt McLain rounds third base on his way to score the first run of the Aug. 2 Speedway Classic against the Braves at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The Speedway Classic was set to start at 7:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, but rain began falling during pregame activities and the tarp was unrolled at 7:19 p.m. It remained there until skies cleared around 8:50 p.m.

The game eventually started at 9:40 p.m. ET, but since Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider had already gone through his pregame warmup routine, the team decided to scratch him in favor of reliever Austin Cox.

The Reds stuck with their original starter, Tennessee native Chase Burns, who retired the Braves in order in the top of the first.

But the skies began to open up once again – quickly turning the playing field into a quagmire as the Reds scored on Austin Hays' one-out RBI single. Play was halted immediately after that and ultimately suspended for the night.

August 3, 2025 at 9:19 PM

(Reuters) -The tariffs U.S. President Donald Trump imposed last week on scores of countries are likely to stay in place rather than be cut as part of continuing negotiations, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Sunday.

Ahead of a Friday deadline, Trump set rates including a 35% duty on many goods from Canada, 50% for Brazil, 25% for India, 20% for Taiwan and 39% for Switzerland, according to a presidential executive order.

In trade talks since Trump returned to office, the White House has lowered some rates from levels initially announced, including halving import duties set last week as part of a deal with the European Union.

Greer told CBS's Face the Nation on Sunday, however, that this would not be the case on the most recent round of tariffs.

"A lot of these are set rates pursuant to deals. Some of these deals are announced, some are not, others depend on the level of the trade deficit or surplus we may have with the country," he said. "These tariff rates are pretty much set."

Greer also said recent trade talks with Beijing had been "very positive" and were focused on the supply of rare earth magnets and minerals.

"We're focused on making sure that the flow of magnets from China to the United States and the- and the adjacent supply chain can flow as freely as it did before ... and I'd say we're about halfway there."

Listen and subscribe to The Big Idea on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts.

When Shivam Mallick Shah and Lindsey Davis Stover founded the tequila brand 1953, they wanted to make moves in an industry that was becoming increasingly popular among their own demographic while also opening doors for other women.

As the brand proudly states on its website, 1953 is "Founded, Farmed, Distilled, and Led by Women." On Yahoo Finance's The Big Idea podcast, the two entrepreneurs shared how they managed to pull off such a feat in a historically male-dominated industry. (Watch the full episode above; listen-only below.)

"I just kind of got down this rabbit hole of where the women in tequila are, unfortunately, really hard to find. So that kind of led us to this idea," Davis Stover, a Texas native, said on the podcast.

"We were drinking tequila. Every woman we knew is drinking tequila," she continued. "So we wanted to create a company that was founded, farmed, distilled, and led by women at every single level. Even our name, 1953, is the year women earned the right to vote in Mexico. I think that is just the essence of our company and providing opportunities for women."

"People didn't think it was necessary to have a female-led supply chain," Shah said. "They didn't think that it would make a difference in the quality of the product, and they didn't think that, frankly, we could do it. They had a lot of strong opinions on what we could do, and it was different than what we wanted to do."

Shah and Davis Stover tackled their mission by completing their search in an "organic way," talking with people who worked at distilleries and farms in Mexico. Eventually, they found Carmen and Adriana, who ran the family-owned distillery that 1953 would eventually use.

"Their family has owned this distillery for over a hundred years, and they have trained a female master distiller, Rocio Rodriguez, who signs every bottle," Shah explained. "She had this incredible story of having come to this distillery when she was pregnant. She was trained as a chemical engineer, but she was worried about losing her job. Carmen and Adriana's families decided to build a nursery so she could come to work and bring her whole self, which has, of course, changed her life, but it changed so many people's lives."

Though their journey to creating a brand with a strong female focus had its roadblocks, the biggest hurdle was finding a woman-owned agave farm. Traditionally, agave farms in Mexico are passed down from father to son, but Carmen and Adriana helped the entrepreneurs find the farm they partner with today.

"We could not find an agave farm owned by women," Shah said. "Carmen and Adriana helped us find a gentleman who only had four daughters. We met with them, and we talked about what we were trying to build. We asked him if he would consider passing his farm down to his daughters if we guaranteed purchase of agave from their farms for 1953."

After a family meeting in which the four women discussed the proposition with their husbands and father, they ultimately agreed, deciding to take on the responsibility and risk to help complete 1953's women-led supply chain.

"They had grown up on this farm, and they knew it like the back of their hand, but they never saw themselves as CEOs. They never saw themselves as the people in charge of running the farm," Shah explained. "What made them think differently was the high school down the street and all the girls who were in that high school, just like they used to be, and wanting to let those girls know that there was nothing they couldn't do. ... It was a motivation we all shared, and we knew we had an alignment of our values, which told us we were in the right place. And that really completed our supply chain."

Every Thursday, Elizabeth Gore discusses real-life stories and smart strategies for launching a small business on The Big Idea podcast. You can find more episodes on our video hub or watch on your preferred streaming service.
