RuPaul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon has brutally mocked JK Rowling's views on transgender people.

The author, 60, has been publicly criticized for her controversial statements about transgender people, including celebrating the UK Supreme Court's April ruling that trans women are not legally women under the Equality Act. However, the Harry Potter author has denied being transphobic.

Many famous faces have hit back at Rowling's views, including Monsoon, who identifies as non-binary. During Thursday's episode of comedian Ziwe's podcast, he asked Monsoon if Rowling would "make a good Roxy Hart in Chicago," the Broadway musical.

The drag performer responded: "Who is this? Who is this Jake? Who is he? JK Rowling."

When Ziwe said Rowling "is a she," Monsoon then mocked the author's name. Rowling notably goes by her initials, JK, which stands for Joanne Kathleen.

"That is not a feminine name in the slightest," they said about Rowling. "I know that oftentimes, female authors use initials so that people assume it's a male writer."

Monsoon continued to throw shade at Rowling's views about transgender rights and issues.

"I have to presume that J.K. Rowling was unsatisfied with the way that the world saw her, and then she transitioned herself into a new personality so that the world would perceive her the way she wanted to be perceived," they continued.

After a moment of silence, Ziwe responded to the remark with: "Gagging," prompting Monsoon to burst out laughing.

Rowling has previously opened up about going by the pen name, telling CNN in 2017 that it wasn't her idea to use it. Instead, it was her publisher who was trying to "disguise [her] gender."

"I was so grateful to be published, if they told me to call myself Rupert, I probably would have done to be honest with you," she said. "But now, I actually quite like having a pen name, because I feel that's — to an extent, that feels like an identity and then I'm — in private life, I'm Jo Murray. And it feels like quite a nice separation."

Rowling also uses the pen name Robert Galbraith when publishing her ongoing detective series, Cormoran Strike. She uses the pseudonym because she "wanted to take [her] writing persona as far away as possible from [her]," as noted on her website.

Since December 2019, Rowling has also hit the headlines for her views on transgender issues. She came out in support of Maya Forstater, who worked as a tax expert at the Centre for Global Development, an international think tank, and was sacked after tweeting that transgender people cannot change their biological sex.

Since then, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, the trio of child actors who played Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the film series, have all publicly shunned Rowling over her apparent anti-transgender views. The author has said she would not forgive them for criticizing her, telling them to "save their apologies."

Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, was recently asked whether Rowling's views "impact you at all or impact your work in the world of Harry Potter at all."

"No, I can't say it does," he replied. "I'm not really that attuned to it."

In May, Rowling announced the launch of the J.K. Rowling Women's Fund. The legal fund, which doesn't specifically mention transgender people, will support "individuals and organizations fighting to retain women's sex-based rights in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces," its website says.

However, many bookstores in San Francisco later responded to the fund in with protest by pulling Harry Potter books from stores' shelves.

Legendary singer and guitaristCarlos Santana, 78, was largely unknown to mainstream audiences when he took the stage at age 22 for his now-iconic Woodstock '69 performance. In a resurfaced and wild interview with journalist Dan Rather, the "Black Magic Woman" musician revealed that a drug trip—courtesy of the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia—nearly derailed his historic set.

"I don't even know how I walked, and next thing I know we're playing this set, and I think I'm going by what Shirley MacLaine calls muscle memory," he confessed.

"When we got to 'Soul Sacrifice,' I noticed that the neck of my guitar was like an electric snake. It wouldn't stand still, you know. So I'm making some seriously ugly faces trying to keep it from slithering so much."

Santana's 11-minute performance of "Soul Sacrifice" is widely considered the standout of Woodstock '69. Featuring a jaw-dropping drum solo by then-teenage drummer Michael Shrieve, the set catapulted Santana to international fame.

CAIRO (AP) — A boat capsized Sunday in waters off Yemen's coast leaving 68 African migrants dead and 74 others missing, the U.N.'s migration agency said.

The tragedy was the latest in a series of shipwrecks off Yemen that have killed hundreds of African migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in hopes of reaching the wealthy Gulf Arab countries.

The vessel, with 154 Ethiopian migrants on board, sank in the Gulf of Aden off the southern Yemeni province of Abyan early Sunday, Abdusattor Esoev, head of the International Organization for Migration in Yemen told The .

He said the bodies of 54 migrants washed ashore in the district of Khanfar, and 14 others were found dead and taken to a hospital morgue in Zinjibar, the provincial capital of Abyan on Yemen's southern coast.

Only 12 migrants survived the shipwreck, and the rest were missing and presumed dead, Esoev said.

In a statement, the Abyan security directorate described a massive search-and-rescue operation given the large number of dead and missing migrants. It said many dead bodies were found scattered across a wide area of the shore.

Despite more than a decade of civil war, Yemen is a major route for migrants from East Africa and the Horn of Africa trying to reach the Gulf Arab countries for work. Migrants are taken by smugglers on often dangerous, overcrowded boats across the Red Sea or Gulf of Aden.

Hundreds of migrants have died or gone missing in shipwrecks off Yemen in recent months, including in March when two migrants died and 186 others were missing after four boats capsized off Yemen and Djibouti, according to the IOM.

More than 60,000 migrants arrived in Yemen in 2024, down from 97,200 in 2023, probably because of greater patrolling of the waters, according to an IOM report in March.

"This is the best way to end the meet," Walsh said. "And I feel like we have such a good opportunity when you have this stacked group of women closing it out on a relay like this.

"We're going to leave Singapore with a smile on our faces."

From a team perspective, the Americans recorded nine gold medals -- one better than Australia.

France finished third followed by Canada, which saw McIntosh win all of its golds.

Stephen Colbert is taking his hosting skills to another CBS property.

The "Late Show" helmsman will guest star in an upcoming episode of the crime comedy series "Elsbeth," appearing as a late-night frontman, Variety has confirmed.

A CBS rep declined Variety's request for comment.

While it's unknown how Colbert will fit into the weekly mystery, the details of his role have been made public. He will play the leading man of the fictional late-night talk show "Way Late with Scotty Bristol," according to Vulture, which first reported Colbert's involvement.

While the episode was filmed this week, Colbert's "Elsbeth" role has long been in the works, kick-started by an appearance from series star Wendell Pierce on "The Late Show."

During Pierce's interview with Colbert, the late-night host said he had asked CBS to play a corpse on one of the network's crime procedurals. Upon hearing this, Pierce offered to help. He told Colbert, "I can make that happen. I know a guy who knows a guy. We can get you on." The "deal" came right as "Elsbeth" was picked up for a third season.

Elsbeth was created by Robert and Michelle King, and stars Carrie Preston in her "The Good Wife" role, along with Pierce. Other notable guest stars from past seasons include Nathan Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Laura Benanti, Matthew Broderick and Retta.

CBS announced in July that "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" would end after the next TV season. While the network cited the move as a "financial decision," some speculated the cancellation was to appease a Donald Trump-controlled FCC amid a merger between Paramount, CBS' parent company, and Skydance.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Freddie Freeman scored one run and drove in another to snap Los Angeles' 18-inning scoreless drought and lead the Dodgers over the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Sunday.

Andy Pages singled off Mason Englert (0-1) in the sixth to drive in Freddie Freeman, who extended his on-base streak to 18 games with a first-inning single and added another RBI single in the seventh to make it 2-0. He had three hits on the day and seven RBIs in the series, which the Dodgers won two games to one.

Shohei Ohtani doubled and scored on Mookie Betts' sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-7) held the Rays scoreless over 5 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and striking out six. Ben Casparius earned his second big-league save, coming in with the bases loaded in the ninth to get Yandy Diaz out.

Dodgers second baseman Tommy Edman left the game in the fifth with a right ankle sprain.

Tampa Bay starter Joe Boyle held the Dodgers scoreless for five innings, working around three hits and two walks. He struck out two.

Key moment

Ohtani beat out a chopper for a single in the seventh and then stole second and third to be in position to score on Freeman's RBI single.

Key stat

0-for-16. Mookie Betts went hitless in the series and is now hitless in four straight games. He was dropped out of the leadoff spot.

Up next

Monday night in Los Angeles, the Dodgers send Tyler Glasnow (1-1, 3.98 ERA) to the mound against the Cardinals. The Rays will debut Adrian Houser (6-2, 2.10) against the Angels.

Staying connected isn't cheap, especially in certain corners of the country. While some Americans shell out less than $400 a year to keep their phones and Wi-Fi running, others are paying more than $1,600 just for the basics.

A report from Power Choice Texas revealed dramatic regional gaps in connectivity costs. In some states, residents are handing over nearly 3.5% of their income just to stay online and reachable — four times the share paid in the cheapest states.

Price isn't the only problem, either, as some high-cost states don't even deliver the top-tier speeds you'd expect, according to the most recent internet speed test data from HighSpeedInternet.com.

Kansas -

Annual cost per person: $1,576

Percentage of income: 3.48%

Average internet speed: 186.88 Mbps (Ranked 34th)

Kansas residents pay the highest share of income in the country for connectivity. Making things worse, the state lags far behind on speed, ranked 34th out of 50.

Washington -

Annual cost per person: $1,618

Percentage of income: 2.70%

Average internet speed: 201.11 Mbps (Ranked 23rd)

Washington leads the nation in total costs. Residents pay more than anyone else for both internet and phone services, but the state doesn't even make the top 20 for internet speed.

Texas -

Annual cost per person: $1,225

Percentage of income: 2.67%

Average internet speed: 225.74 Mbps (Ranked 8th)

Texas ranks high for costs, but at least delivers performance. The Lone Star State is among the top 10 in average speed.

Pennsylvania -

Annual cost per person: $994

Percentage of income: 2.10%

Average internet speed: 204.66 Mbps (Ranked 20th)

Phone costs drive up the total bill in Pennsylvania. Speeds are near average but still not enough to offset the high percentage of income lost to connectivity.

Virginia -

Annual cost per person: $1,018

Percentage of income: 2.04%

Average internet speed: 230.49 Mbps (Ranked 6th)

Virginia is one of the rare states offering a decent trade-off. Costs are high, but internet speeds rank sixth nationally.

New Hampshire -

Annual cost per person: $992

Percentage of income: 1.99%

Average internet speed: 217.06 Mbps (Ranked 14th)

Connectivity in New Hampshire eats up nearly 2% of income, though speeds are slightly above average.

California -

Annual cost per person: $1,004

Percentage of income: 1.86%

Average internet speed: 223.59 Mbps (Ranked 9th)

Californians pay just over a thousand per year. Speeds are strong, ranking ninth nationwide, but the income bite remains one of the largest.

New York -

Annual cost per person: $1,030

Percentage of income: 1.81%

Average internet speed: 208.05 Mbps (Ranked 17th)

Connectivity in New York costs over a thousand dollars a year. Speeds are slightly above the national average, but don't justify the price tag.

Alaska -

Annual cost per person: $1,006

Percentage of income: 1.79%

Average internet speed: 125.09 Mbps (Ranked 50th)

Alaska has the slowest average speeds in the country, despite exceeding $1,000 in annual costs. A clear case of paying more for less.

Massachusetts -

Annual cost per person: $1,006

Percentage of income: 1.66%

Average internet speed: 218.54 Mbps (Ranked 12th)

Massachusetts residents pay a lot, but relatively high wages help ease the burden. Internet speeds rank a solid 12th.
