Several towns in eastern Australia were blanketed with their thickest layer of snow in decades as wild weather swept the area over the weekend.

Cars, roofs and gardens were completely white as a cold air front dropped as much as 16in (40cm) of snow on parts of northern New South Wales on Saturday, the most since the mid-1980s.

Snow also settled in areas of the neighbouring state of Queensland for the first time in ten years, Miriam Bradbury, a meteorologist at Australia's weather bureau, said.

The snow, combined with heavy rain and thunderstorms, has led to more than 1,455 incidents, according to the New South Wales State Emergency Service.

The Bolt Inn at Uralla, New South Wales, has become a refuge for people displaced by the snowstorm

Thousands of homes are expected to remain without power for another 24 hours, while mobile phone outages have been widely reported across the area.

More than 200 vehicles were stranded on roads due to snow, storms had damaged buildings, and major flood warnings were issued.

The rain started to ease on Sunday, but parts of New England in New South Wales were told to evacuate ahead of major flooding expected on Monday.

Ms Bradbury said climate change has made Australia's weather more volatile in recent years, but that this sort of event had only occurred several times in history.

"What makes this event unusual is how much snow we had but also how widespread, covering quite a large part of the northern tablelands," she said.

Many were keen to make the most of the unexpected weather. Footage showed residents making snowmen and enjoying snowball fights, a rare sight in Australia's most populous state.

"It's a very surreal experience. I've never seen snow before in my entire life," Brendan Gough, who travelled hundreds of miles from Queensland to experience the phenomenon, told Reuters.

Police in New South Wales, said a car had become stuck in floodwater on Saturday evening and a female passenger was swept away. The search was continuing on Sunday, they said.

The 27-year-old woman was rescued without injuries, police later said on Monday, adding that the search for other possible victims was underway.

Jack Osbourne is reflecting on his late dad Ozzy Osbourne's eating habits.

During an Aug. 3 TV appearance on the U.K. food show Cooking with the Stars — filmed before his father's death — Jack, 39, spoke about growing up in a house where professional chefs often cooked the family's meals.

"I grew up on potato waffles until we moved to America," he said, recalling how he, Ozzy, mom Sharon and sisters Aimee and Kelly moved to the U.S. from England when he was around 11 years old. "We would get take out all the time — apart from times when we had a chef."

Jack joked that the Black Sabbath frontman never employed any one chef for a long time, as he was a "picky eater" who would suddenly decide: "'No, I don't like it anymore,' even though it's some amazing chef."

Osbourne died on July 22 at 76 years old. Jack publicly mourned his father's death alongside his mother and siblings on the Black Sabbath bridge and bench in Birmingham, England.

Ozzy had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2023. Before his death, he performed his final Black Sabbath concert in early July.

A source close to the family also told PEOPLE that the rocker was to be honored by his family with a funeral befitting the star's infectious spirit.

"They're very grateful for the special family time they had together before Ozzy passed," the source said last week. "They're planning a small, private funeral that will be a celebration of his life. Ozzy would never want a mope-fest."

The source added that the rocker's family is "touched by all the love and support pouring in from around the world."

Although Jack hasn't yet spoken publicly about his father's death, a number of other Osbourne family members have looked back on Ozzy's life — including Jack's ex-wife Lisa Stelly.

Stelly posted a touching tribute on Instagram of Ozzy with his grandchildren throughout the years. From painting in the house to flying in a private jet, the proud mom of three shared several special memories of Ozzy enjoying being a grandfather.

Stelly, 38, reposted the post onto her Instagram Stories, adding "Love you, Papa" in text and Ozzy's 1995 song, "See You on the Other Side."

Daughter Kelly, 40, also posted a photo on her Instagram Stories on Aug. 1, showing a flower display crafted in honor of Ozzy.

An arrangement of purple flowers that spelled out "Ozzy F------ Osbourne" could be seen in the social media post.

The florals were similar to those that were laid at the hearse at Ozzy's funeral.

Kelly previously shared a poignant tribute to her dad on her Instagram Stories on July 24, posting lyrics from the Black Sabbath song "Changes," which she and Ozzy recorded their own version of in 2003.

"I feel unhappy I am so sad," Kelly wrote in her social media post. "I lost the best friend I ever had 💔."

BRISTOL, TN — This town of 28,000 year-round residents is typically a little on the sleepy side. When NASCAR comes to Bristol Motor Speedway two weekends a year, the place explodes with visitors from every corner of the country.

This weekend, though, the explosion in visitors was due to a (maybe) once-in-a-lifetime event sponsored by a different sport.

Major League Baseball partnered with the racetrack to present the MLB Speedway Classic, as the Cincinnati Reds fell to the Atlanta Braves, 4-2, after two lengthy rain delays Saturday pushed the game to Sunday afternoon. Not only did it mark the first regular-season game played in the state of Tennessee, it set the sport's all-time attendance record, as 91,032 fans bought tickets to the contest, many of them hundreds of feet from the action in the massive seating bowl.

Far fewer than that number were in their seats Sunday to witness this bit of history, as many were unable to return for the suspended contest, but the record remains because of the number of tickets sold.

Here are the lessons I learned by attending the soggy event:

Bringing a big event here is risky due to weather

This has to be pointed out before all other lessons. Even before Saturday night's two rain delays and eventual suspension, it was obvious that it was risky to bring a game here at this time of year. Fans who spent the week here in Eastern Tennessee learned something valuable: It rains nearly every day. Hard.

MLB keeps upping the ante with its 'jewel' events

When MLB brought a regular-season game to Fort Bragg in North Carolina in 2016, there were no superstar concerts or celebrity sightings. Even the national anthem was sung by a soldier on active duty at the base. The event proved that MLB could pull off a game in truly unusual circumstances – including constructing a temporary ballpark. Since then, there have been games in London, at the Little League World Series, the Field of Dreams site and the old Negro Leagues ballpark in Birmingham. With each new event, MLB has sought to make a bigger impact. It doesn't get any bigger than Bristol Motor Speedway.

There's much more than just baseball

In addition to huge-name performing acts, fan zones, local food and numerous attractions, MLB always brings a charitable component to these jewel events. In addition to donating the artificial playing field from this game to nearby East Tennessee State University, MLB's Ambassador of PlayBall James Lowe (also known as "Coach Ballgame") led a skills workshop for over 200 youth players on Friday. "Our goal was to inject joy and plain ol' common sense in baseball, not a win-at-all-costs attitude toward the game," Lowe says. "The kids really enjoyed it."

Some players liked this break from the routine more than others

Reds manager Terry Francona implied that some of his players were grumbling about interrupting their series in Cincinnati to come to Eastern Tennessee. "For one time a year, if it's good for the game, we need to put a smile on and do it," he explains. Others welcomed the departure from their normal routine.

Before the game, Braves first baseman Matt Olson said he was looking forward to trying to hit a ball onto the racetrack. "It's a really cool set-up here. I just can't believe they did this just for one game," Olson said.

Fans are crazy about these unique events

Look no further than all the different license e plates in the massive parking lots surrounding the track Trey Kelley of Cedartown, Georgia says the draw of coming here, "was the experience of getting to see baseball in a different place. Bristol is really a special venue."

Bristol Motor Speedway really knows what it's doing

A major difference between bringing the event here versus all of the other jewel-game locations is that MLB had to do all of the heavy lifting of organizing and communicating at those other sites. Here, there was already a full staff of PR and communications professionals. They handle all of the NASCAR events, and they are exceptional at their jobs.

After last year's emotional game honoring Negro Leagues players, did it make sense for MLB to come to a NASCAR track?

A criticism often heard when this game was announced a year ago is that it is, well, an odd choice on the heels of honoring the Negro Leagues in Birmingham last June. It's a bit much to consider it tone-deaf, because it appears that there was no connection between last year's game and this one. Each year's location is selected independently from all previous games.

Playing in a venue with 150,000 seats allowed MLB to answer critics

If you look back at past jewel events, by far the biggest criticism from fans was their inability to buy seats due to the very small seating capacities. This event didn't sell out until earlier this week, giving fans ample opportunity to buy as many tickets as they wanted, answering the critics. At Bristol, "we knew we could go really big," says Jeremiah Yolkut, MLB's Senior Vice President of Global Events.

If this racetrack has 150,000 seats, why did MLB stop selling tickets around 90,000?

For those who attended this game, it was obvious that wide swaths of the seating bowl simply couldn't see the playing field at all. The seats are great for racing, but not baseball, so there was no need to sell them. Those sections were covered with colorful tarps instead.

The baseball field at Bristol Motor Speedway.Gorgeous merch, but ridiculously priced

These events are heaven for souvenir collectors, and the creative use of racing graphics made the merchandise irresistible. The prices, to be honest, were ridiculous. I bought a shirt and a cap, and the total including tax was $169. That is no way to treat fans.

The Appalachian League matters

When MLB reduced the number of affiliated Minor League teams from 160 to 120 four years ago, it wiped out leagues like the New York-Penn League, and relegated circuits like the Pioneer League and Appalachian League to un-affiliated status. But franchises in the Appy League lived on, thanks in part to entities like Boyd Sports that agreed to acquire half of the teams in this ten-team league. The players are no longer pros, supplied by big-league teams. Instead, they are college students, much like in the Cape Cod League.

And do the communities supporting the players and the players themselves believe that this league matters? One look at the jubilation exhibited by the Bluefield Ridge Runners after the final out of the Appy League championship game Friday night tells you all you . Even if there's no room for these teams in the affiliated world, the sport needs the Appy League. "It's a special league. I'm sorry we don't have it for our young players anymore," observes Braves manager Brian Snitker, whose first games as a pro were for Kingsport in this league.

Despite what most people assume, playing here is a two-way street

This is the most important lesson. MLB emphasizes the fact that it prioritizes holding these jewel games in places where MLB has rarely or never been played. However, after spending the week going to Appy League games and dining in local eateries, I came to the conclusion that it was more important for baseball fans from across the country to experience life here, than for folks living here to experience MLB.

Some may have looked at this as "fly-over country," but locals are as genuine and welcoming as you'll ever encounter – and their sense of community is unmatched. The big win is allowing fans from all over to experience how these folks live, not that MLB brought the sport to them.

It would be great for MLB to continue this trend of bringing jewel games to places that benefit fans to visit.

William Byron nursed his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to the finish line at Iowa Speedway as his whole NASCAR Cup Series team held its breath that there was enough fuel left in the car to take the checkered flag.

After running out of gas while running third at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last week and while leading the race at Michigan International Speedway earlier this summer, Byron managed to save enough fuel to make it to the finish line and to hold off Chase Briscoe, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney to win the Iowa Corn 350 on Sunday, Aug. 3.

"How about that for some fuel mileage," a relieved Byron said after climbing out of his car on the start/finish line. "We've had our share of things not going our way with fuel mileage. We've been through a lot this year. It's been a lot of growing pains. It's been tough on us, but it feels really good today to get a win.

"Luckily, the fuel was enough at the end. I think I ran out there. That's why I stopped."

— FOX: NASCAR (@NASCARONFOX) August 3, 2025

Byron, who started second behind Briscoe, led a race-high 141 of 350 laps.

He took his final lead after passing his teammate Chase Elliott on a restart on Lap 277, but multiple cautions shook up the fuel strategy for many teams. Byron had made the earliest pit stop among the drivers chasing him down in the closing laps, forcing both the driver and the No. 24 team to walk a tightrope between having enough speed to keep the lead and enough gas to make it to the end.

Byron began the season with a victory in the season-opening Daytona 500 in February, but despite leading the points standings for most of the season, Daytona remained his lone win of 2025.

"Our confidence in each other never wavered," Byron said. "Our speed's been better than it's ever been, and that's a big reason why we stayed confident. We needed just one to go our way, and today it did."

Briscoe finished second, Keselowski third, Blaney fourth and Ryan Preece fifth. Last week's winner Bubba Wallace rebounded from damage earlier in the race to finish sixth. Alex Bowman, Carson Hocevar, Joey Logano and Austin Dillon rounded out the top 10.

Briscoe has now finished second in three of the last four races — Iowa, Dover and Sonoma — and thought he was in the catbird's seat to pick up the win with Byron low on fuel.

"It's unfortunate, I was trying everything I had, I just didn't have anything left in the tank," Briscoe said. "It just kind of died there at the end of the run.

"I don't know, we've been in position enough, running second like that, you're going to end up winning some of them. It just hasn't went our way the last three or four of them."

With his contract dispute ongoing, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook showed up for Sunday's mandatory practice but did not participate. Instead, the 25-year-old stood off to the side and spent a short amount of time on an exercise bike.

After practice, when asked why he did not participate, Cook offered just three words: "Oh, nothing. Business."

Sunday marked the first time Cook did not participate since requesting a contract extension during the offseason. The two-time Pro Bowler, who shared the league lead with 16 rushing touchdowns last season, wants to become one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL.

Cook also was asked whether he was holding out or planning to suit up for Monday's practice.

Again, Cook kept his response short: "Business."

The Bills provided no comment on Cook, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. Cook -- who did not attend Buffalo's voluntary offseason team activities but did participate in the mandatory three-day minicamp as well as the first eight practices of training camp -- was not on the team's list of injured players leading up to Sunday's practice.

Entering his fourth year in the league, Cook has put together back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. His 2,638 rushing yards are the most among his peers in the 2022 draft class. Yet he is not on the list of Bills' 2022 draftees -- wide receiver Khalil Shakir, linebacker Terrel Bernard and cornerback Christian Benford -- who have been rewarded with extensions. The Bills traded their first-round pick from that season, cornerback Kaiir Elam, to the Dallas Cowboys in March.

"Sometimes you can't get on the same page or sometimes you're trying to fit it in," Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane told reporters at the start of camp. "There's times guys have left here that we really wanted. We just couldn't make it work.

"But I can tell you, I'm hopeful, when we're sitting here at next year's training camp, that James Cook is out there practicing and still representing the red, white and blue."

RuPaul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon has brutally mocked JK Rowling's views on transgender people.

The author, 60, has been publicly criticized for her controversial statements about transgender people, including celebrating the UK Supreme Court's April ruling that trans women are not legally women under the Equality Act. However, the Harry Potter author has denied being transphobic.

Many famous faces have hit back at Rowling's views, including Monsoon, who identifies as non-binary. During Thursday's episode of comedian Ziwe's podcast, he asked Monsoon if Rowling would "make a good Roxy Hart in Chicago," the Broadway musical.

The drag performer responded: "Who is this? Who is this Jake? Who is he? JK Rowling."

When Ziwe said Rowling "is a she," Monsoon then mocked the author's name. Rowling notably goes by her initials, JK, which stands for Joanne Kathleen.

Jinkx Monsoon jokes JK Rowling's pen name is 'not feminine' after the author was criticized for her trans views (Getty Images)

"That is not a feminine name in the slightest," they said about Rowling. "I know that oftentimes, female authors use initials so that people assume it's a male writer."

Monsoon continued to throw shade at Rowling's views about transgender rights and issues.

"I have to presume that J.K. Rowling was unsatisfied with the way that the world saw her, and then she transitioned herself into a new personality so that the world would perceive her the way she wanted to be perceived," they continued.

After a moment of silence, Ziwe responded to the remark with: "Gagging," prompting Monsoon to burst out laughing.

Rowling has previously opened up about going by the pen name, telling CNN in 2017 that it wasn't her idea to use it. Instead, it was her publisher who was trying to "disguise [her] gender."

"I was so grateful to be published, if they told me to call myself Rupert, I probably would have done to be honest with you," she said. "But now, I actually quite like having a pen name, because I feel that's — to an extent, that feels like an identity and then I'm — in private life, I'm Jo Murray. And it feels like quite a nice separation."

Rowling also uses the pen name Robert Galbraith when publishing her ongoing detective series, Cormoran Strike. She uses the pseudonym because she "wanted to take [her] writing persona as far away as possible from [her]," as noted on her website.

Since December 2019, Rowling has also hit the headlines for her views on transgender issues. She came out in support of Maya Forstater, who worked as a tax expert at the Centre for Global Development, an international think tank, and was sacked after tweeting that transgender people cannot change their biological sex.

Since then, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, the trio of child actors who played Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the film series, have all publicly shunned Rowling over her apparent anti-transgender views. The author has said she would not forgive them for criticizing her, telling them to "save their apologies."

Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, was recently asked whether Rowling's views "impact you at all or impact your work in the world of Harry Potter at all."

"No, I can't say it does," he replied. "I'm not really that attuned to it."

In May, Rowling announced the launch of the J.K. Rowling Women's Fund. The legal fund, which doesn't specifically mention transgender people, will support "individuals and organizations fighting to retain women's sex-based rights in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces," its website says.

However, many bookstores in San Francisco later responded to the fund in with protest by pulling Harry Potter books from stores' shelves.
