Welcome to the Monday Leaderboard, where we run down the weekend's top stories in the wonderful world of golf. Grab an Arnold Palmer, pull up a chair and get ready for the playoffs … unless you're the defending Masters champion, that is.

Rory McIlroy creates his own playoff bye

Imagine if an NFL team could decide it just felt like skipping ahead to the next round of the playoffs. Or if a past Masters champion decided he'd rather not play on Thursday and jump straight to Friday. Seems a little absurd, right? Sure, playoff byes do exist in other sports, but you generally don't get to make that call once the playoffs actually begin. But that's exactly what Rory McIlroy is doing this year at the FedEx Cup playoffs, skipping the first round at TPC Southwind in Memphis to prepare for next week's BMW Championship.

To be clear: from a competitive perspective, this is entirely the right move for McIlroy. He's ranked second in the FedEx Cup standings, more than 800 points ahead of third-place Sepp Straka, and he hasn't performed well in Memphis in the past. So there's not much to play for, making a self-declared bye not just understandable, but a wise decision. McIlroy is a three-time FedEx Cup champion, most recently in 2022, so he knows what he's doing here.

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

The real issue is the playoff format that permits such a possibility. As long as there's been a FedEx Cup playoff, there's been tinkering with the format; a multi-tournament playoff system that rewards season-long excellence while providing opportunity for postseason charges is a tough challenge to create from both mathematical and competitive perspectives. This isn't quite as bad as, say, 2008, where Vijay Singh had locked up the title before the Tour Championship even began, but still ... having a marquee player be able to nope his way out of an entire tournament and still stay in the hunt seems rather contrary to the aim of the entire enterprise.

Nelly's reign ends

For much of 2024, Nelly Korda owned women's golf, winning seven times and standing toe-to-toe with fellow world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. But 2025 hasn't gone quite so well for Korda, with exactly zero wins to date. As a result, she's projected to lose the No. 1 status she's held for the last 17 months after a T36 finish at the AIG Women's British Open. Jeeno Thitikul, who held the No. 1 slot for two weeks in 2022, will retake the top spot. At least Korda has her cameo as a parole officer in "Happy Gilmore 2" to lean on this year. Small steps.

Bank-shot ace!

Check this out: Mimi Rhodes pulled off a nifty bank-shot ace over the weekend at the AIG …

My. My. Mimi. 💯Hole-in-one for Mimi Rhodes. pic.twitter.com/yEjXrxqmgJ

— AIG Women's Open (@AIGWomensOpen) August 3, 2025

Rhodes banked her ball off that of her playing partner Steph Kyriacou, who had dropped her tee shot on the par-3 5th within two inches of the cup. Rhodes would go on to finish T19 after a final round of 74, but she'll always have that ace to remember.

Cam Young: Mr. 1,000

Somehow, Cam Young — 2021-22 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, author of top-10 finishes in all four majors, top-15 player on the planet — had not yet won a PGA Tour event … until Sunday. Young absolutely annihilated the Wyndham Championship, winning by six strokes and potentially playing himself into Ryder Cup contention. He's also the 1,000th different winner on the PGA Tour, which is a strange stat but notable nonetheless.

Charley Hull's near-masterpiece

Speaking of "Happy Gilmore 2" cameo stars, Charley Hull nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages in the AIG. Miyu Yamashita captured the lead on Friday and never surrendered it, but Hull almost pulled off a magnificent 11-shot comeback. A long birdie at 14 pulled Hull to within one of Yamashita, but then Hull bogeyed 16 and 17 to end her comeback bid. Still, she's clearly rebounded from injury and illness of recent weeks. Light 'em up!

Coming up this week: PGA Tour: FedEx St. Jude Championship (Memphis, FedEx Cup Playoffs); LPGA: hiatus; LIV Golf: Chicago; PGA Tour Champions: Boeing Classic (Washington).

Jacob Camenker, USA TODAY August 4, 2025 at 9:00 PM

In the actual NFL draft, NFL teams always want the No. 1 overall pick. In fantasy football drafts, the desire of fantasy managers varies.

Some prefer to have the top selection, as it gives them their preferred target atop the draft. Others would rather draft near the end of the snake and get an earlier pick in the second round.

As such, the No. 1 overall fantasy pick can be viewed as either a blessing or a curse. But either way, fantasy managers need to make sure they get the pick right. If they don't, their roster depth will suffer as a result.

Who are the best options for the top fantasy selection this season? Below is a look at the only five players fantasy football managers should consider taking atop the draft, starting with a running back who was a league-winner for many last season.

2025 POSITION RANKINGS: QB | RB | WR | TE | K | D/ST | Overall

No. 1 pick options in fantasy football1. Saquon Barkley, RB, Philadelphia Eagles

Barkley was the top fantasy running back last year as he generated just the ninth 2,000-yard rushing season in NFL history. He figures to once again be a highly productive runner after averaging 3.8 yards before contact per carry — a whopping 0.5 yards better than any other running back — behind a stellar Philadelphia offensive line.

The only concern with Barkley? He had a league-high 378 touches during the regular season and added another 104 to his ledger in the postseason. Since 2010, running backs with at least 337 touches in a season have seen an average decline of 113.9 PPR points, and 3.9 fewer PPR points per game, the following season.

2. Ja'Marr Chase, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

Chase won the receiving Triple Crown in 2024, leading the league in catches (127), yards (1,708) and touchdowns (17). He could certainly do it again, given the chemistry he has shown with long-time teammate Joe Burrow and the Bengals' high-volume passing attack.

Receiver production is generally more consistent year-to-year than running back production, so few would fault anyone for taking Chase No. 1 overall, especially in PPR leagues. But in half-PPR or standard formats, it is difficult to pass on a high-end running back given how quickly top-tier talents at the position come off the board in snake drafts.

3. Bijan Robinson, RB, Atlanta Falcons

Only two running backs had more catches than Robinson's 61 in 2024: De'Von Achane (78) and Alvin Kamara (68). That gives Robinson one of the highest PPR floors among fantasy running backs, and his on-the-ground production (1,456 yards, 14 touchdowns) is nothing to sneeze at, either.

Like Barkley, Robinson surpassed the dreaded 337-touch mark in 2024 with 365. Robinson, 23, is much younger than the 28-year-old Barkley, which might aid him in avoiding a decline. However, he also plays in a more volatile offense that will be entrusting second-year QB Michael Penix Jr. as a full-time starter for the first time.

4. Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Detroit Lions

Gibbs showed fantasy managers his potential as a workhorse over the final three weeks of the 2024 NFL season. With David Montgomery out, Gibbs averaged 25.7 touches and 162.3 total yards per game while scoring six total touchdowns.

While Gibbs' ceiling is that of the No. 1 overall fantasy running back, Montgomery still figures to eat into his workload. Montgomery's size (5-11, 224 pounds) will likely make him Dan Campbell's preferred goal-line option. That might limit Gibbs' upside, but it's worth noting he had the fewest touches (302) among the consensus top-three fantasy running backs for 2025.

5. Justin Jefferson, WR, Minnesota Vikings

Jefferson has only once finished worse than the No. 6-rated wide receiver in fantasy. That came in 2023, when he played just 10 games because of a hamstring injury. As long as Jefferson remains healthy, he should be one of the best fantasy football wide receivers, which puts him in the running for the No. 1 overall pick.

Still, Jefferson seems more likely to be an early-to-mid first-round selection. The Vikings are breaking in a first-year starter at quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, so any early growing pains could impact Jefferson out of the gate. So, too, could a mild hamstring strain that is keeping Jefferson out of the early stages of Minnesota's training camp.

(AP Photo/Jeff Chiu, File)

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers went back to a familiar face when coach Kyle Shanahan looked to revive a defensive unit that had gone from dominant to mediocre in recent years.

The Niners brought back Robert Saleh for a second stint as coordinator in hopes that he could once again build back the defense in similar fashion to what he did in 2019 when San Francisco's stingy defense helped carry the team to the Super Bowl.

"His commanding presence in defensive meetings is what we needed," star defensive end Nick Bosa said.

The 49ers aren't the only contender that made a change at play-caller on offense or defense headed into 2025. How all of those work out will go a long way to determining which teams are playing deep into January.

Some teams were forced to make changes they didn't want to with Detroit needing to replace both coordinators after Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn got head coaching jobs and Super Bowl champion Philadelphia needing to replace offensive coordinator Kellen Moore after he became Saints head coach.

Tampa Bay is in a similar boat for a second straight season after losing an offensive coordinator to a head coaching job with Liam Coen leaving for Jacksonville one year after Dave Canales left for Carolina.

Other teams such as Houston, Cincinnati and Seattle made changes in hopes of finding a spark.

Here's a look at some of the key new coordinators around the NFL:

49ers DC Robert Saleh

The 49ers ranked 29th in the league in scoring defense last season, allowing 25.6 points per game, and were tied for the seventh-fewest takeaways with 17 as the unit looked nothing like the dominant ones under Saleh and DeMeco Ryans from 2019-22.

That led to Shanahan making another change at coordinator, bringing back Saleh after he was fired as head coach of the New York Jets to replace the fired Nick Sorensen.

During Saleh's last two full seasons with the Jets in 2022-23, New York ranked first in yards passing allowed per game (178.9) and yards per play allowed (4.7), and second in total defense (301.7 yards per game).

The Niners are hoping similar results will get them back to the postseason after a 6-11 record in 2024.

Lions OC John Morton and DC Kelvin Sheppard

Detroit became the third team in the past 15 seasons to lose both coordinators to NFL head coaching jobs in the same offseason with it also happening to Philadelphia following the 2022 season and Cincinnati after 2013. Both those teams went back to the playoffs the following season, losing in the wild-card round.

The Lions have their sights set higher after making it to the NFC title game in 2023 and losing in the divisional round as the top seed last season. Whether that happens will depend heavily on if Morton can keep the offense in the top five in scoring for a fourth straight season after Johnson helped make it one of the most dynamic in the league with his trick plays and schemes.

Morton has only one year of play-calling experience in the NFL in 2017 with the Jets, finishing in the bottom 10 in scoring with an offense that lacked the playmakers he has in Detroit.

Sheppard should be helped by getting star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson back healthy after he missed the final 12 games last season with a broken leg.

Eagles OC Kevin Patullo

QB Jalen Hurts will have a fourth play-caller in as many years with Patullo getting promoted from passing game coordinator following Moore's departure.

The offense improved under Moore in 2024 after stagnating the previous season when Brian Johnson replaced Shane Steichen as OC.

Patullo has plenty of talent with one of the top offensive lines, record-setting running back Saquon Barkley and two talented wideouts in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith to support Hurts.

Buccaneers OC Josh Grizzard

Tampa Bay's offense got even better last season when Coen replaced Canales with both the running game and screen passing showing major improvement.

Grizzard will try to build on that as he moves from passing game coordinator to OC. He was heavily involved with the third down offense last season when the Bucs led the NFL by converting 50.9%.

Texans OC Nick Caley

Coach DeMeco Ryans made a change after last season even though Houston made it back to the divisional round. That came in spite of the offense taking a big step back thanks in large part to shoddy line play that hindered the growth of QB C.J. Stroud.

Caley comes over after spending the past two seasons on Sean McVay's staff with the Rams and is being counted on to bring some of Los Angeles' successful wrinkles to Houston to help make Stroud's job at quarterback easier. He will need to do it with an overhauled offensive line that lost stalwart Laremy Tunsil in the offseason.

Bengals DC AL Golden

The Bengals went to the college ranks to hire Golden away from Notre Dame to replace Lou Anarumo. Cincinnati reached the Super Bowl with Anarumo leading the defense in the 2021 season but regressed the past few years and were ranked in the bottom 10 in most categories last season.

Golden spent the 2020-21 seasons as linebackers coach for the Bengals and brings a man-heavy scheme to the NFL.

Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak

Seattle hired Kubiak to replace Ryan Grubb in hopes that his scheme heavy on zone blocking and play-action passing can help the Seahawks offensive line.

Kubiak was OC in New Orleans last season when the Saints got off to a fast start before injuries led to a downfall.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane told The on Monday he isn't sure how long the contract standoff with James Cook will last after the running back declined to participate in practice for a second straight day.

Cook wore a white hat, red Bills pullover and blue shorts upon briefly entering the practice field, before ducking into a portable bathroom about 12 minutes before practice was scheduled to start. He then left the field, exiting through the trainer's tent and did not re-appear for at least the first hour of practice.

This marks the second day Cook has not participated in practice in the fourth-year player's next step in escalating his bid to extend the final year of his contract. On Sunday, Cook worked out on a stationary bike before watching practice from the sideline while wearing a white sweatsuit.

A second-round pick in the 2022 draft, Cook was the NFL's co-leader with 16 touchdowns rushing in his second full season as a starter.

Cook risks being fined by the team for declining to practice, and with Buffalo preparing to open its preseason schedule hosting the New York Giants on Saturday.

Cook repeatedly used the word "business" when asked about his decision to not practice, in speaking to a small group of reporters on Sunday.

Cook's agent has not returned messages seeking comment.

Earlier Monday, Beane appeared on WGR-Radio and said the team wasn't aware of Cook's decision to not practice Sunday until shortly before the session began. Beane also reiterated the two sides have been in constant contact in a bid to bridge the gap.

"I'd love to see Jimbo out there today. I don't know that answer at this point this morning, whether that will happen or not," Beane said.

"But hopefully we'll get him back out there soon," he added. "This is my ninth season here, and we've never had a player miss due to a contract or anything like that, so that's disappointing for me. It's not something we want."

The 25-year-old Cook made no secret this offseason of his desire for a new contract that would pay him in the range of $15 million a year in what would make him among the league's highest-paid players at his position.

Though Cook skipped all of the team's voluntary sessions this spring, he had previously taken part in each of the Bills mandatory practices, including their first eight of training camp before Sunday.

Cook's absence from practice comes at a time the Bills are already short on bodies due to injuries. As many as 15 players missed or were limited in practice on Sunday due to injuries, including receivers Khalil Shakir (ankle), Joshua Palmer (groin) and Curtis Samuel (hamstring).

The Bills do have depth at running back with returning backups Ray Davis and Ty Johnson as well as Frank Gore Jr., who spent his rookie season last year on the practiced squad.

From left: Alex Warren's "Ordinary," SZA and Kendrick Lamar's "Luther" and Justin Bieber's "Daisies" are topping the charts. But are any of them "song of the summer" material? - Getty Images

The summer of 2025 is severely lacking in "Espresso."

Gone are the sweaty days when "Not Like Us" lit up parties nationwide, uniting Drake dissers everywhere. There are manchildren and daisies and animated anthems from "KPop Demon Hunters," but nothing that's made as big of a cultural dent as "Birds of a Feather" or anything from "Brat."

There is no song of the summer this year. And if there is, it's probably a bummer.

The top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 are occupied largely by downers. At No. 1, Alex Warren's vaguely Christian ballad "Ordinary" is best suited for a quiet study session, not a raucous party. Morgan Wallen, fresh from God's country, can't feign enthusiasm on his recent half-baked singles. Even pop prince Justin Bieber is keeping it low-key on his new album, which relies on sparse, downbeat guitars. (This, coming from one of the men behind 2017's song of the summer, "Despacito.")

And then, if the most popular songs in the country aren't somewhat dour or mellow to a fault, they're holdovers from 2024 (or older). This year, it seems we left pop bombast in 2024.

"We're coming off a huge wave of amazing stuff," said Mike Errico, a songwriter and instructor at New York University's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. "A lot of what 2025 has come out with — they're kind of down, kind of low energy. It's good, but it's not going to light up a room."

The state of the song of the summer is in crisis. There's still time to find a definitive song that unites both snobs and casual listeners — Sabrina Carpenter's new album arrives at the end of August, after all — but so far, the song of summer 2025 is one long sigh.

2024 was just special

Save us, Sabrina Carpenter. The "Espresso" hitmaker is releasing new music in August — could she win song of the summer two years in a row? - Mario Anzuoni/Reuters

Last summer, we met exciting new pop stars like Chappell Roan. Underdogs like Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter, who worked steadily for years as cult favorites, finally broke out. And maybe you heard that two of the most famous women in the world — Taylor Swift, Beyoncé — released projects last year?

"2024 was exceptional," Errico said. "I don't think you see that a lot — really humongous hits, with insanely long lives on the charts."

This year's popular new music has been decidedly downbeat, with ballads and ponderous country songs topping the charts, Errico said. Even Bieber's "Daisies," charting high in the weeks after its release, is relatively pared back for the one-time collaborator of fiery artists like Skrillex and Quavo.

"A lot of stuff was low energy," Errico said of this year's new music. "It's good for dim rooms, but I don't think that's associated with the 'song of the summer.'"

Ideally, a song of the summer is "bright, poppy, upbeat," Errico said — a celebration in miniature that's easy to dance along to. It's a song that won't grate even when you hear it one million times over one summer. This year "did not deliver that," he said.

"Maybe we shot our bullets in 2024 all at once," he said.

This summer's most popular songs aren't new

"Do we need a song of the summer to be brand spankin' new?" Errico pondered. "Can it be something from, oh, 10 months ago?"

Release dates haven't held back some of the year's most popular songs from continuing to soar. Four of the top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 were released in 2024, including Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)," a scrappy, easily singable country song that's been charting for over a year, and "Luther," Kendrick Lamar's laid-back jam with SZA.

Everybody at the bar still gettin' tipsy — Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" is still inescapable a full summer after its debut. - Daniel Cole/Reuters

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars' 2024 dulcet duet "Die with a Smile" has survived for nearly a year in the top 10 — meanwhile, the spiky, danceable cuts from Gaga's new album "Mayhem" have disappeared. (There's also Teddy Swims' inexplicably popular "Lose Control," which is now over two years old.)

"I think it speaks to the power of 2024, that they're still on the charts in 2025," Errico said. "Maybe 2024 isn't over yet."

Songs with cultural clout aren't charting

There is a type of song that makes less of a dent upon arrival but winds up defining the summer, like "360," "Guess" and "Apple" from Charli XCX's "Brat."

This year, that slot appears to be filled by PinkPantheress' "Illegal," which has soundtracked over a million TikToks and counting. It slid off the charts fairly quickly after its May release, but it fills the earworm quotient, and it's the rare viral hit that hasn't yet worn out its welcome. Also in contention are songs from burgeoning pop star and original TikTok idol Addison Rae and Ravyn Lenae, whose "Love Me Not" is a rare bouncy gem in the top 10.

"You're not seeing (these songs) en masse, but maybe that's better," Errico said of the cult hits. "Maybe not everyone should be invited to a single party. Maybe we should have different parties with different playlists that reflect a smaller but more dedicated group of people."

It's possible that when we look back at this summer a year from now, older songs will spring to mind, Errico offered. The CEO kiss-cam meltdown at a Coldplay concert in July became one of the summer's biggest stories, and fans may remember the moment set to "The Scientist" or "Fix You." Ozzy Osbourne's death has already prompted fans to revisit his greatest hits, like the karaoke barn-burner "Crazy Train."

Or maybe, Errico suggested, the song of the summer is one that best exemplifies the quickening encroachment of AI into creative fields, like AI band Velvet Sundown's AI song, "Dust on the Wind." Even the title sounds like a Fleetwood Mac-inspired ChatGPT prompt.

Is the song of the summer dead?

This fruitless search for the song of the summer has made Errico wonder, do we even need one this year? The songs of 2024 are already tiding us over.

"Maybe music needed this minute to chill," he said. "Let's let everybody digest it and come back strong next summer."

Maybe we'll get back to the good stuff in summer 2026. Or maybe late entries like Carpenter; Tyler, The Creator and Chappell Roan (whose new song is a ballad) could run away with the season — or the year.

After all, Errico said: "A good song is good for longer than the summer."

A fire broke out on New York-bound train tracks in New Jersey on Aug. 4, forcing passengers to flee during their Monday morning commute.

Video footage from the incident shows chaos and panic as passengers attempted to exit the smoke-filled train at Newport station, while a fire can be seen burning under one of the train cars.

The fire started shortly before 6:20 a.m. Aug. 4 under an eastbound train at the Newport PATH Station, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) said in a statement to USA TODAY.

Watch: Passengers flee PATH train in New Jersey after fire erupts on tracks13 people treated for smoke inhalation

The transportation agency said passengers were evacuated to the platform while the train filled with smoke.

Thirteen people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, of which nine were later transported to the hospital for further evaluation, PANYNJ said in an update around 9:45 a.m.

Authorities did not say what sparked the fire, except that an investigation into it is ongoing.

The train lines connecting Hoboken in New Jersey to World Trade Center in Manhattan and Journal Square to Midtown Manhattan were suspended as a result of the fire. However, several other lines connecting New Jersey to Manhattan were running, according to updates by PATH on social media. New Jersey Transit buses, New Jersey Transit Rail and New York Waterway were also cross-honoring tickets to assist commuters, the agency said.

Fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a civilian plane Sunday after it entered restricted airspace over President Trump's property in Bedminster, New Jersey, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said, one of seven aircraft to violate the airspace over the weekend.

Three civilian planes flew in the restricted airspace Saturday, and there were four more violations on Sunday, including one that was intercepted by fighter aircraft, NORAD said in a statement.

Flares were deployed to get the pilot's attention, NORAD said on social media, and the plane was safely escorted out of the area by NORAD aircraft.

"The flares — which may have been visible to the public — are employed with the highest regard for the safety of the intercepted aircraft and people on the ground," NORAD said in a separate statement. "Flares burn out quickly and completely and there is no danger to the people on the ground when dispensed."

According to the president's schedule, Mr. Trump was at Bedminster on Sunday and scheduled to leave Sunday evening for the White House.

NORAD, which noted previously that 11 aircraft violated the same airspace over July 4 weekend, urged pilots to pay attention to Notices to Airmen, or NOTAMs, issued by the FAA.

"Ignorance is not a defense," NORAD warned before the weekend when announcing the airspace restrictions.

The command routinely issues temporary flight restriction zones for Mr. Trump's Bedminster retreat as well as his property at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Air Force fighter jets have also intercepted civilian aircraft flying in the temporarily restricted airspace over Mr. Trump's Florida home this year, after the president took office on Jan. 20.
