UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — A former corrections officer was sentenced to 15 years in prison Monday for his role in the death of a Black inmate whose beating by a group of guards at an upstate New York prison was captured on bodycam videos.

Christopher Walrath was one of six guards charged with murder in the death of Robert Brooks, who was pummeled at the Marcy Correctional Facility on Dec. 9. Walrath pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in May under the first plea deal among the guards charged with murder.

"In that video, I see you and your fellow officers treating him as if his life holds no value at all, as if you're entitled to brutalize him for sport," Robert Brooks Jr., the victim's son, told the court.

The son said in his victim impact statement that, "I am not OK and I never will be."

Brooks had been serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault since 2017 and was transferred to Marcy from a nearby lockup on the night he was beaten. The videos show Brooks being struck in the chest with a shoe, lifted by his neck and then dropped.

Under questioning in May from Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, Walrath admitted that he and other guards assaulted Brooks, that he put Brooks in a chokehold, and that he struck the inmate's body and groin.

In addition to the six guards charged in February with murder, three more prison workers were indicted for manslaughter and another for evidence tampering. Prosecutors have said three other prison workers have reached agreements.

A guard pleaded guilty in May to attempted tampering with physical evidence and was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge.

Trials were scheduled to begin in October for guards who have rejected plea deals.

Fitzpatrick also is prosecuting guards in the fatal beating of Messiah Nantwi on March 1 at another Marcy lockup, the Mid-State Correctional Facility. Ten guards were indicted in April, including two who are charged with murder.

Both prisons are about 180 miles (290 kilometers) northwest of New York City.

Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni reunited on set of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 27 in New York City

The fan-favorite pair were also joined by SVU alum and Organized Crime star Dann Florek, who has played Capt. Donald Cragen since the 1999 premiere of SVU

SVU season 27 is slated to premiere on Sept. 25.

BenStabler fans, rejoice!

On Sunday, Aug. 3, Mariska Hargitay was joined on the set of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 27 by none other than Christopher Meloni. The fan-favorite pair's reunion delighted fans, who love seeing Hargitay's Olivia Benson and Meloni's Elliot Stabler together again, 14 years after Meloni left SVU following season 12.

In photos from the set, the actors were seen embracing both on-camera and off, as well as joking around with each other.

In a few shots, they sat close on director's chairs and caught up off-camera, and they appeared particularly close while filming one scene, where Meloni, 64, had his arms wrapped around Hargitay, 61, as they looked into each other's eyes.

Meloni teased his upcoming return to SVU in an Instagram post.

On Saturday, Aug. 2, the actor shared three selfies from the set of the long-running series — a solo with Hargitay; a group shot with Law & Order: Organized Crime star and fellow SVU alum Dann Florek; and a solo with Florek.

Florek, who has played Capt. Donald Cragen since the 1999 premiere of SVU, left the show in 2015 and last appeared three years ago in season 23, so his presence on set also excited fans who are eager to see him reunite with Olivia.

Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni are seen on the film set of the TV series "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" on August 03, 2025 in New York City.

"Hangin with friends on a Friday nite," Meloni wrote in the post's caption, tagging both Hargiaty and Florek, 75.

The reunion delighted fans, who filled the comments with love and, as always, begged Meloni to return as a regular on SVU.

Hargitay and Meloni's onscreen reunion comes after the actress finally weighed in on when she'd want to see her character finally get romantic with Stabler.

On Call Her Daddy in June, host Alex Cooper asked Hargitay if she and Meloni's characters will "ever end up together," and she gave a real answer.

"Maybe on the last episode," she said. "I think that's when they should be together."

Still, that necessitates that the story is "right" for the two of them to finally give it a go. "We'll see when we get there," she said.

Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni are seen on the film set of the TV series "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" on August 03, 2025 in New York City.

Of her relationship with her costar, Hargitay said she and Meloni are "soulmates."

"And I think that. I mean, Chris has had a profound impact on my life, my artistry. I think we've had a big impact on each other."

She also reflected on how difficult it was when Meloni left SVU in 2012, as she admitted she was "devastated" by his exit.

During the same podcast episode, Hargitay said she and Meloni "know each other so well" and "love each other so much," which made his departure from SVU particularly difficult, even though he was "ready to go."

"Obviously, the entire world was just devastated. I was devastated," she said.

The shock factor didn't help. "It happened very quickly, and it was surprising. It was over a negotiation," she said. "And I tried everything I could to fix it and change it. He left. I was devastated."

Heidi Klum said she is starting a worm and parasite cleanse with her husband

The model said she'll do the cleanse, using herbal supplements, for a few months

Experts say there is no credible evidence to support that parasite cleanses work

Heidi Klum is hoping to get rid of worms and parasites in her body.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, published August 4, the supermodel and Project Runway host opened up about her lifestyle habits. While the 52-year-old said she doesn't follow any diets, she revealed she's starting a worm and parasite cleanse with husband Tom Kaulitz.

"I'm going to deworm and de-parasite for the first time," she told the outlet. "Everything I'm getting on my Instagram feed at the moment is about worms and parasites. So I'm doing a worm cleanse and parasite cleanse with my husband. I heard that you're supposed to do this once a year, and I've never done it. So I feel like I'm really behind. I don't know what the heck is going to come out."

Klum didn't clarify whether she had any evidence of worms or parasites, but claimed that everyone has them.

"If you are someone who eats raw things every now and then, like, for example, sushi. There are pills [to get rid of them]," she explained. "They have all of these herbs. There's a lot of clove in there. The parasite hates clove. They also hate the seeds from a papaya. We have all this metal inside of us, and it's also very important that you use this de-metaling stuff."

"I'm starting this now, and you have to do this for months," she added. "It's like a whole thing."

Parasitic infections are real and can cause serious health problems. However, they can only be diagnosed by a doctor following proper testing.

There is currently no medical evidence to support that herbal supplements or other ingredients work in getting rid of a parasitic infection. Additionally, cleanses and detoxes in general are often associated with a variety of health risks.

Experts also stress that not all gastrointestinal issues are related to parasites.

"I really hope these cleanses don't become popular," registered dietitian Beth Czerwony told the Cleveland Clinic. "There's just no credible evidence to show that they work, and they can bring big health risks."

"Sometimes, a parasitic infection will clear up on its own," Czerwony said, "but most people need prescription medication treatment. If you have a legitimate parasitic infection, trying to treat yourself holistically with herbs and spices is just not a good idea."

Moscow broke its silence on President Donald Trump's comments ordering two nuclear submarines to "the appropriate regions" in response to "provocative" remarks by a former Russian president.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russian state media on Aug. 4 that the country was "very attentive" to the topic of nuclear non-proliferation and believed "everyone should be very, very cautious with nuclear rhetoric."

Peskov also played down the significance of Trump's comments, saying it was clear to Russia that U.S. submarines were already on combat duty. He said Russia had no appetite for getting into a prolonged argument with Trump.

Trump offers Putin an ultimatum: pressure builds to sanction Russia

Still, Trump's deployment of the nuclear submarines appears to be the first time social media rhetoric has led an American president to apparently reposition parts of the United States' nuclear arsenal. (Trump did not specify whether he was referring to nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed submarines.)

Trump said the move was in response to statements from Dmitry Medvedev, who was the Russian president from 2008 to 2012 and prime minister from 2012 to 2020. He is now the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council. Medvedev, who in recent years has taken to social media to post spiky, rabble-rousing comments aimed at the United States, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that Trump's recent threats to sanction Russia, including a tariffs ultimatum, were "a step towards war."

Trump: Nuclear submarines 'in the region' amid tension with Russia

Seeking a ceasefire

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Putin himself has frequently resorted to nuclear threats. The Kremlin has repeatedly suggested that Moscow could use nuclear weapons under certain circumstances.

The latest spat follows Trump's trip to Scotland, where he said he was reducing his 50-day deadline for Russia to make moves toward trying to end its war with Ukraine – down to a new deadline of 10 or 12 days. That deadline is Aug. 8. Trump warned of "very severe" sanctions on Russia if it does not commit to a ceasefire.

Ahead of the deadline, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, a real estate mogul and cryptocurrency trader who has turned into Trump's de facto roaming emissary, is expected to visit Russia on Aug. 6.

Peskov said Russia views Witkoff's visit as "important, substantial and helpful," and he raised the possibility that Witkoff might see President Vladimir Putin for talks. Witkoff has made multiple trips to Moscow at Trump's behest.

Deputy head of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev delivers a speech during a session of the educational marathon "Knowledge. First" in Moscow, Russia, April 29, 2025.

After one of his trips, he returned with a portrait of Trump gifted by Putin. During another visit, Witkoff, who does not speak Russian, arrived without a translator and relied on one supplied by the Kremlin. His last trip was in April.

Trump told reporters that if his Aug. 8 deadline arrives and Russia has not agreed to a Ukraine ceasefire, "there'll be sanctions. But they seem to be pretty good at avoiding sanctions," he added.

"You know, they're wily characters. … So we'll see what happens."

TEL AVIV — When Hamas released a video of Evyatar David, he looked so frail and emaciated that his father did not recognize his voice, the Israeli hostage's brother said Monday.

David, now 24, was partying at the Nova music festival in southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, when militants kidnapped him and 250 others nationwide during their sweeping terrorist attack in which 1,200 were killed.

Hamas prompted further international outcry this weekend when it posted footage of a markedly frail David alongside that of starving Palestinians — suffering from chronic food shortages under Israel's military operation and intensified blockade — in what his family sees as an attempt to use him as a propaganda tool.

"It breaks my parents' hearts," his older brother, Ilay David, 28, told NBC News on Monday in Tel Aviv about Galia and Avishay David.

He said he can't bring himself to watch the video, but his family has likened his brother's physical condition to images from the Holocaust. "It looks like pictures we all know from history class 80 years ago," said David, who before the attack worked as a youth counselor but now is focused full time on bringing his brother home.

The hostages were "being kept in a near-death situation," David said, adding that his brother "can barely speak" and he was so weak that their father couldn't recognize his voice.

He added that his brother "needs medical care right now, and if I am not able to speak about him, advocate for him, he may not survive."

The widespread starvation now playing out in Gaza has killed at least 170 people, 90 of them children, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. There are around 20 hostages believed still alive after almost three years in captivity, according the latest Israeli tally.

From left, Ilay David, Evyatar David, their parents Galia and Avishay David, and sister, Ye'ela David. (Family photo)

Among them is David, who his brother described as a "brilliant guitar player" with the "kindest soul I know."

Ilay David added: "I love him, and he's my best friend."

David spoke out after President Donald Trump's envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, met with families of the hostages on Saturday and emphasized the administration's commitment to returning those still inside Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also spoke "at length" with David's family on Saturday night, expressing "deep shock" at the recordings released by Hamas, his office said in a statement. He blamed Hamas for "deliberately starving" hostages and Palestinians by "preventing them from receiving aid."

Almost 61,000 people have been killed since the start of Israel's military campaign, according to Palestinian health officials. Recent international outcry about widespread malnutrition in the enclave has prompted Israel to pause fighting and let some aid in — but aid agencies say it's not enough.

David's brother blamed the terror group for using "him cynically in their own starvation campaign," and calling it the "peak of cruelty."

Ilay David said they are "worse than al Qaeda" and "worse than ISIS," two of the major terrorist groups that have brought misery to the Middle East in recent decades.

Evyatar David "still has faith, still has hope, that's what holds him sure," his brother said. "When he comes back — not if he comes back — we're going to take care of him, support him and he will be greater than before."

Matt Bradley reported from Tel Aviv, and Alexander Smith from London.

Two people were killed and another six were injured in a shooting at a party in Los Angeles on early Monday, Aug. 4, local police said.

At around 1 a.m. local time on Aug. 4, Los Angeles police responded to a report of gunfire on the 1100th block of 14th Place, Los Angeles Police Department Police Information Officer Norma Eisenman told USA TODAY. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found two people dead and six others who had been struck by bullets. Six people were transported to a local hospital, Eisenman said.

Police had previously responded to the same location around 11 p.m. local time on Sunday, Aug. 3, Eisenman said. During that visit, police arrested an individual for possession of a firearm and cleared the area.

Eisenman said the two people who died included a man between 20 and 30 years old, and a woman around 50 years old.

Jay BusbeeAugust 5, 2025 at 12:50 AM

Welcome to the Monday Leaderboard, where we run down the weekend's top stories in the wonderful world of golf. Grab an Arnold Palmer, pull up a chair and get ready for the playoffs … unless you're the defending Masters champion, that is.

Rory McIlroy creates his own playoff bye

Imagine if an NFL team could decide it just felt like skipping ahead to the next round of the playoffs. Or if a past Masters champion decided he'd rather not play on Thursday and jump straight to Friday. Seems a little absurd, right? Sure, playoff byes do exist in other sports, but you generally don't get to make that call once the playoffs actually begin. But that's exactly what Rory McIlroy is doing this year at the FedEx Cup playoffs, skipping the first round at TPC Southwind in Memphis to prepare for next week's BMW Championship.

To be clear: from a competitive perspective, this is entirely the right move for McIlroy. He's ranked second in the FedEx Cup standings, more than 800 points ahead of third-place Sepp Straka, and he hasn't performed well in Memphis in the past. So there's not much to play for, making a self-declared bye not just understandable, but a wise decision. McIlroy is a three-time FedEx Cup champion, most recently in 2022, so he knows what he's doing here.

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

The real issue is the playoff format that permits such a possibility. As long as there's been a FedEx Cup playoff, there's been tinkering with the format; a multi-tournament playoff system that rewards season-long excellence while providing opportunity for postseason charges is a tough challenge to create from both mathematical and competitive perspectives. This isn't quite as bad as, say, 2008, where Vijay Singh had locked up the title before the Tour Championship even began, but still ... having a marquee player be able to nope his way out of an entire tournament and still stay in the hunt seems rather contrary to the aim of the entire enterprise.

Nelly's reign ends

For much of 2024, Nelly Korda owned women's golf, winning seven times and standing toe-to-toe with fellow world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. But 2025 hasn't gone quite so well for Korda, with exactly zero wins to date. As a result, she's projected to lose the No. 1 status she's held for the last 17 months after a T36 finish at the AIG Women's British Open. Jeeno Thitikul, who held the No. 1 slot for two weeks in 2022, will retake the top spot. At least Korda has her cameo as a parole officer in "Happy Gilmore 2" to lean on this year. Small steps.

Bank-shot ace!

Check this out: Mimi Rhodes pulled off a nifty bank-shot ace over the weekend at the AIG …

My. My. Mimi. 💯Hole-in-one for Mimi Rhodes. pic.twitter.com/yEjXrxqmgJ

— AIG Women's Open (@AIGWomensOpen) August 3, 2025

Rhodes banked her ball off that of her playing partner Steph Kyriacou, who had dropped her tee shot on the par-3 5th within two inches of the cup. Rhodes would go on to finish T19 after a final round of 74, but she'll always have that ace to remember.

Cam Young: Mr. 1,000

Somehow, Cam Young — 2021-22 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, author of top-10 finishes in all four majors, top-15 player on the planet — had not yet won a PGA Tour event … until Sunday. Young absolutely annihilated the Wyndham Championship, winning by six strokes and potentially playing himself into Ryder Cup contention. He's also the 1,000th different winner on the PGA Tour, which is a strange stat but notable nonetheless.

Charley Hull's near-masterpiece

Speaking of "Happy Gilmore 2" cameo stars, Charley Hull nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages in the AIG. Miyu Yamashita captured the lead on Friday and never surrendered it, but Hull almost pulled off a magnificent 11-shot comeback. A long birdie at 14 pulled Hull to within one of Yamashita, but then Hull bogeyed 16 and 17 to end her comeback bid. Still, she's clearly rebounded from injury and illness of recent weeks. Light 'em up!

Coming up this week: PGA Tour: FedEx St. Jude Championship (Memphis, FedEx Cup Playoffs); LPGA: hiatus; LIV Golf: Chicago; PGA Tour Champions: Boeing Classic (Washington).
