The NFL star credited his Eagle Scout past for his mental toughness, and cited words of advice that helped him push through last season's adversity

Through his continued partnership with Scouting America, the pro running back strives to educate and inspire the youth to learn the skills to do the same

David Montgomery was prepared.

The Detroit Lions running back reflected on the near season-ending injury he sustained during his team's week 15 matchup against the Buffalo Bills last season, telling PEOPLE exclusively about one past experience that helped him overcome that challenging time: Scouting.

Today, most know him as a former Iowa State standout and current NFL star, but Montgomery is a proud Eagle Scout at the core — and still wears the honor on his sleeve. Not only has it helped him persevere in his own personal and professional life, but now he's inspiring others to do the same.

"For me it's a full circle moment," Montgomery, 28, tells PEOPLE exclusively of his continued partnership with Scouting America as a year-two official recruitment ambassador. "To this day, scouting was a foundational pillar to my life and who I am."

On Dec. 15, Montgomery suffered a torn MCL in his left knee during a second-quarter play in the Lion's game against the Bills at at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. Opting for rehab over surgery, he locked in physically — and mentally — to overcome, returning for the playoffs three weeks later.

"My Scout Master was a big firm believer in, 'Tough times don't last, tough people do', " he tells PEOPLE of the mindset he channeled amid his recovery journey. Rather than "overreact" in the difficult moment, he chose to "take a step back" and reassess.

"I used that moment scouting taught me to kind of be that same way when I was injured," he shares. "I was like, 'Okay, it sucks. It's not ideal. It's not what I want, but it's fine. The world goes on.' You got to keep working and just keep your head down and the cream will rise to the top," he adds.

Scouting America

And that's exactly what the pro football player did, and defied the season-ending expectation.

"I was able to come back towards the end of the year, which was super big for me from a mental standpoint," he shares, crediting his scouting experience — and specifically, the motivational words he remembered from his Scout Master — as his key to overcome.

Understanding how to endure the uncomfortable, the Ohio native says, helps him to "be comfortable" when times get "uncomfortable" in his NFL career.

In his team up with Scouting America, Montgomery strives to teach the youth the importance of showing up, working hard and persevering through challenges. Plus, he hopes to inspire them that scouting and athletes don't just coexist — but rather, fuel each other.

Montgomery was around seven years old when he first became a Scout.

"My mom introduced it to me when I was younger when I was playing pee-wee football. Crazy my life has kind of looked the same the entirety of my life," he marvels. "It's kind of just the same language."

"I think without it I wouldn't be able to be who I am standing here today," Montgomery shares. "It was challenging, but I love scouting and I wouldn't change it for the world."

NEW CUYAMA, Calif. – The largest wildfire currently burning in California grew to more than 72,000 acres. The Gifford Fire burning in Los Padres National Forest in Southern California prompted additional evacuations across two counties on Monday evening, with little relief from dangerous fire weather conditions in sight.

The Gifford Fire has scorched 72,460 acres as of Monday evening and is just 3% contained, according to officials from Los Padres National Forest.

They expect the wildfire to continue to grow as dry conditions persist with no rain in the forecast for the next week. The flames are threatening more than 870 buildings.

Heavy smoke was seen across Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties on Monday, although no air quality alerts are currently in place.

The wildfire started along Highway 166 west of Cayama on Friday afternoon.

The fire is burning within the national forest, consuming thick brush along both sides of Highway 166, with most of the fire in Santa Barbara County.

According to the U.s. Forest Service, additional firefighting resources have been brought in to combat the fire burning in rugged terrain. Firefighters said they will use additional aerial fire suppression Tuesday.

Nearly 2,000 fire personnel are responding to the blaze.

Video shared by the Forest Service shows an air tanker making a water drop on the blaze.

The fire is burning just west of the recent Madre Fire, which became California's largest wildfire of the year on July 3. The Madre Fire was fully contained on July 28 after burning more than 80,000 acres, according to the Forest Service.

Officials said the Madre Fire's burn scar should help contain the northeastern portion of the Gifford Fire as those fuels have already been consumed.

Additional evacuations were issued Monday evening across both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties after initial orders were issued over the weekend.

Both counties have established evacuation centers.

Forest Service officials said three people were injured because of the fire. One civilian was taken by helicopter to the hospital for burn injuries. Two contractors were injured in a UTV rollover incident. All the victims were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Fire weather conditions will continue to deteriorate this week.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, no rain is expected in the area within the next seven days and humidity will remain low.

According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, Southern California faces elevated fire behavior with gusty winds in the week ahead. Under these conditions, abnormally elevated fire behavior and growth are possible.

Forecasters are tracking smoke moving across Southern California from the Gifford Fire.

Jon Hoefling, USA TODAYAugust 5, 2025 at 7:29 PM

The 45th Ryder Cup is still more than a month away, but the captains and co-captains for Team USA have already been selected.

The captain is an underrated part of the Ryder Cup event. Sure, they don't have any outcome in the results directly, but their decisions could have a drastic effect on the event when all is said and done. Knowing when to use your best golfers, who to match up against who, and when to deploy the big guns can be the difference between a point or a half point, which could make all the difference by the end of the weekend.

Here are the Ryder Cup captains for 2025, plus everything to know about the highly-anticipated tournament.

FedEx Cup: How do the FedEx Cup Playoffs work? What is the format? Who qualifies? What's new in 2025?

Who are the captains for the 2025 Ryder Cup?

The American team will be captained by Keegan Bradley, 39. He will be the youngest U.S. captain in Ryder Cup history. Gary Woodland, Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker will serve as vice captains for the team.

On the European side, Luke Donald returns as captain after leading the European team to victory in 2023. Donald will be the first repeat captain since Bernard Gallacher captained the European team in three consecutive tournaments (1991, 1993, 1995). Europe's vice captains include Edoardo Molinari, Thomas Bjørn, José María Olazábal and Francesco Molinari.

Donald represented Europe as a player four times throughout his career, with Europe winning the tournament every single time. He also contributed points consistently, providing 10.5 points across 15 matches.

When is the 2025 Ryder Cup tournament?

The Ryder Cup will be a three-day tournament between September 26 and 28. This year, the event will be held at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.

When will Ryder Cup rosters be announced?

The team rosters for the Ryder Cup will be revealed this month following the BMW Championship and Tour Championship. The top six players in the Ryder Cup standings following the BMW Championship, which concludes on August 17, will automatically qualify for the team. The final six players on each team will all be chosen by team captains. Those picks will be announced following the Tour Championship, which concludes a week later on August 24.

NEW YORK (AP) — The first career save for Nic Enright was a particularly meaningful one.

Enright, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in late 2022 and is scheduled to complete his treatments later this year, allowed an unearned run in the 10th inning Monday night to close out the Cleveland Guardians' 7-6 win over the New York Mets.

"He was almost crying on the field just now," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "If you read his story, it's pretty inspirational."

Cleveland selected Enright in the 20th round of the 2019 amateur draft out of Virginia Tech. He received his diagnosis Dec. 22, 2022 — 15 days after the Miami Marlins took him in the Rule 5 draft.

After four rounds of immunotherapy in early 2023, Enright made nine minor league rehab appearances for the Marlins before being designated for assignment and returning to the Guardians in late May.

He missed most of last season due to a right shoulder strain, but went 2-1 with a 1.06 ERA in 16 appearances with Triple-A Columbus.

The right-hander has one more round of cancer treatment scheduled for November.

"I made the decision when I was diagnosed in 2022 with Hodgkin lymphoma that I wasn't going to let that define my life and dictate how I was going to go about my life," Enright said. "It's something where, for anyone else who is going through anything similar, (it shows) I haven't just holed up in my house and felt sorry for myself this whole time."

Enright made his major league debut May 25 and has a 2.01 ERA in 19 appearances for the Guardians, whose bullpen is in flux with All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase on paid leave as part of a sports gambling investigation.

Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith pitched the eighth and ninth innings Monday before Enright entered with a two-run lead. He gave up a two-out RBI single to Brett Baty before retiring Luis Torrens on a fly out to the warning track in right.

"I definitely held my breath as I saw Nolan (Jones) kind of keep running," Enright said. "But I had faith. As he kind of got closer to the wall, I realized it was losing steam."

Enright was showered with beer by teammates in the locker room.

"I was so happy, oh, I was going nuts in here," Guardians starting pitcher Slade Cecconi said with a smile. "I was going absolutely berserk. He came in running up the stairs, smile on his face."

Enright thanked his wife, his parents and the rest of his family for their support throughout an interview at his locker. He got the ball from the final out and plans to set aside his uniform and hat as well as a lineup card.

"Really, really cool," Enright said. "These last couple of years, especially, I've gone through a lot of adversity and just everything that's gone on. And so for me, it's being able to reflect on those in these moments. I think that helps being able to slow the game down. Because it hasn't exactly been a red-carpet rollout for my career trajectory."

Meghan L. HallAugust 5, 2025 at 8:37 PM

The 2025 WNBA trade deadline is quickly approaching, and there are several players to monitor as movement heats up.

For the last several weeks, things have been fairly quiet on the trade front. In June, the Seattle Storm traded center Li Yueru to the Wings, and the Las Vegas Aces picked up Wings forward Nalyssa Smith in exchange for the team's 2027 first-round draft pick. However, on Sunday, the action picked up again.

The Minnesota Lynx acquired Wings guard DiJonai Carrington in a three-player trade that also included Minnesota's 2027 second-round pick. Carrington's could signal another wave of moves. As the August 7 deadline approaches, here are some names to monitor:

Marina Mabrey, guard, Connecticut Sun

Mabrey made headlines over the offseason with a trade request. Connecticut brought Mabrey to the team during the 2024 season with the hopes of adding her to its quest for a championship. The title didn't happev and, in the offseason, the Sun parted ways with every starter and their head coach. Predictably, she asked for a trade, but Connecticut denied her request. That led to her agent ripping the franchise publicly, insinuating the team was forcing her to play when she didn't want to be there.

Things have calmed down since then, and now a trade doesn't feel likely to happen. Still, it wouldn't be surprising if Mabrey brings the request back to the table.

Aaliyah Edwards, forward, Washington Mystics

Edwards was drafted by the Mystics with the sixth overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft. However, after starting 15-plus games last season, her minutes have diminished and so has her production. The former UConn Huskies forward is averaging career lows in nearly every major category, including minutes (13) and points (six). Edwards began the season with an injury, which forced the Mystics to turn to rookie Kiki Iriafen a lot sooner. Iriafen took advantage and carved out a lane in Washington's starting lineup.

Edwards was left on the outside looking in as Washington turned to Iriafen and veterans Shakira Austin and Stefanie Dolson. In July, ESPN reported Washington had begun accepting offers for the second-year forward. If she is moved, the Valkyries or Chicago Sky, who could use productive depth, make sense.

Other WNBA trade candidates -

Alysha Clark, guard, Seattle Storm: Clark has struggled since re-joining the Storm earlier this year, following three seasons between the Mystics and the Las Vegas Aces. She was pulled from the starting lineup after seven games and is averaging three points per game, production that hasn't been seen since her rookie season.

Damiris Dantas, forward, Indiana Fever: It's hard to gauge what the Fever's plan is for Dantas. Her minutes have been all over the place and so has her production. That said, the Fever seem to have patience. A move probably isn't likely, but for a team wanting to continually stay in the contender conversations, reorganizing the bottom of the roster isn't out of reach.

Kalani Brown, center, Phoenix Mercury: The Phoenix Mercury traded for Brown when they brought over Satou Sabally in a blockbuster trade in February. It was widely assumed the former Wings center would take over playing the five spot with franchise player Brittney Griner off to Atlanta, but that hasn't been the case. Brown has started one game in 2025, and her minutes have been inconsistent since early June.

Country Star Zach Bryan Burns Flag 9 Months After Dramatic Breakup originally appeared on Parade.

Nine months after his tumultuous breakup from Barstool Sports personality Brianna "Chickenfry" LaPaglia,Zach Bryan is done talking. Instead, he's flag-burning.

The 29-year-old "Something in the Orange Singer" took to his Instagram Story on Monday, August 9, to share a video of himself lighting a Barstool Sports flag — one emblazoned with the brand's famous "Saturdays Are for the Boys" tagline — on fire. A few seconds after it ignites, Bryan takes his golf club and hit half of the already-incinerated flag across his property. In the next video, he hops on board his tractor, apparently to go retrieve it.

Bryan set the whole flag-burning process to the tune of Tyler Childers' "Bitin' List" — specifically the lines: "To put it plain, I just don't like you / not a thing about the way you is / And if there ever come a time I got rabies / you're high on my bitin' list."

In addition to the telling lyrics, the country crooner's use of a Childers song could also be reference to the scathing diss track Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy and Josh Richards dropped about Bryan in the wake of his split from LaPaglia.

In October 2024, Bryan and LaPaglia broke up after months of dating, with the musician announcing their breakup in a lengthy post on social media. LaPaglia, for her part, soon went on her Barstool BFFs podcast, whom she hosts with Richards and, at the time, big boss Portnoy, who founded the sports brand. On the pod, LaPaglia accused Bryan of emotional abuse and further alleged that offered her $12 million to not discuss their split, which she turned down.

Portnoy and Richards, for their part, came up with a wildly NSFW diss track about Bryan in defense of LaPaglia.

Among the many lyrics aimed at the "Oklahoma Smokeshow" crooner, one line they rap in particular, is: "Your whole style's Morgan Wallen, Tyler Childers, Copy Paste."

Though October 2025 will mark a year since Bryan and LaPaglia's split, it looks like the drama is far from over — especially as Bryan's new fire-filled social media stunt comes on the heels of a jab he reportedly made at LaPaglia just last month.

After a fan speculated that a new lyric on his song "River Washed Hair" could be about LaPaglia — "And I think I might pack a bag in the night / Find me some small town out West / Start over, find closure and just say 'I'm sorry' / To that sweet girl who tore off that dress," Bryan sings on the track — he took a shot at LaPaglia when shooting down the speculation.

"Lmfao I said 'sweet,'" Bryan wrote in a comment that has since been deleted, per Taste of Country. "This is not about whatever she has going on hahahahahaah."

'You call that an emergency fund?' 5 money basics most adults are failing right now

Anna Serio-AliAugust 5, 2025 at 10:58 PM

'You call that an emergency fund?' 5 money basics most adults are failing right now (Westend61 via Getty Images)

The last time anyone tried to teach me money skills was my last semester of high school. Suffering a serious case of senioritis, I remember only that my teacher had a habit of buying makeup she didn't need on a nearly maxed-out credit card!

I'm lucky to know a lot more about managing money in my personal finance career. But here's the sobering reality: Only half of all Americans are financially literate, according to the World Economic Forum. And the kicker? Most think they are financially savvy. Make that math add up.

But no need to panic: By nailing down a few of these financial fundamentals — and teaming up with the right financial pros — you can join the half who have their money figured out.

1. Building a disaster-proof emergency fund

A healthy emergency cushion can mean the difference between "this sucks" and "this ruins everything." But what's healthy supposed to look like in your bank account? A lot of it comes down to your living situation, including your monthly costs, spending habits and people in your household.

Start by calculating your monthly expenses — not what you think you spend, but what you actually shell out on your mortgage or rent, groceries, insurance, credit cards or loans or anything else you can't cut from your budget.

If it's just you and your salary, shoot for enough to cover at least three to six months of expenses. If you live in a two-income household, shoot for at least three to six months of expenses. If you're flying solo, put away a little more — say, six to nine months of expenses — to sleep all the more soundly when life gets tight.

Automatic deposits and transfers to your emergency fund keep savings on autopilot with the magic of compounding.

🔍 Learn more: Life-proof your savings: How to build an emergency fund on any budget

2. Making debt work for (not against) you

Debt is a scary word, yet here's the plot twist: You need at least some debt for healthy finances and to grow your wealth. No debt, no credit history. And without a credit history, good luck buying a house, getting an affordable loan, scoring the lowest insurance rates or even landing a job, in some cases.

You build credit each time you pay down a student loan or credit card on time. But real wealth building means using debt to your advantage. After all, for most Americans, their most valuable asset — their home — exists only because they borrowed to buy it.

The secret lies in running the numbers: If you'll reasonably earn more than you'll pay in interest and fees, the debt could be worth it. If it's an investment with a significant chance of losing your shirt, potential high returns could backfire.

That's why financial pros encourage, say, taking on a mortgage to buy a house but not borrowing money to invest in crypto — one helps build financial stability while the other is expensive gambling.

🔍 Learn more: Can you use a home equity loan to buy a rental or investment property?

3. Getting the retirement math right

Only half of Americans think their retirement savings are on track. If you're wondering whether that's you, use these rules of thumb as a reality check:

The 15% rule — Earmark 15% of your income before taxes each working year for your golden years, including matching what your employer kicks in.

The 25x rule — You'll need 25 times your expected annual retirement spending saved up — and don't skip factoring in inevitable inflation.

The 4% rule — Aim to withdraw no more than 4% of your total savings in your first year of retirement, and adjust that amount each year to keep up with inflation.

If these rules make you want to run for the hills, relax: It doesn't mean you'll need to work into your 80s. But it might be time to meet with a financial advisor. A pro can help you find creative and practical ways to catch up and meet your retirement goals.

🔍 Learn more: The 4% rule for retirement: Is it time to rethink this popular withdrawal guideline?

4. Beating back inflation for the long game

Speaking of inflation, we've heard a lot about the price of groceries recently — especially eggs. But it's easy to forget that inflation can nip away at your money in "safe" savings or checking accounts to the tune of 3% or more a year.

Simply upgrading where you park your cash can help you earn higher rates and outpace inflation, making sure your cash actually grows:

High-yield savings accounts and money market accounts are still paying out interest that's higher than the inflation rate — and up to 10 times more than your traditional savings account. It won't make you rich, but your money's just as accessible and insured up to $250,000, thanks to the FDIC, making them ideal for stashing your emergency fund.

Certificates of deposit (CDs) pay out higher rates than traditional accounts with a guaranteed return, but there's a tradeoff: Your money's locked up through your term's maturity — anywhere from a few months to a few years. Touch it early, and you'll pay a penalty.

Investments in stocks, mutual funds, bonds and similar assets can crush your bank's returns over time. Yes, they're riskier than your everyday accounts, but they grow over years, rather than months, making them best for long-term goals like retirement.

🔍 Learn more: How much should you keep in a high-yield savings account?

5. Knowing when to call in the experts

Financial goals turn abstract money into an actual game plan, sharpening your money skills along the way. Want to be mortgage-free in 10 years rather than 30? Budget like a pro to make extra payments on time, and think twice about swiping credit cards or taking on other debt that can set you back.

You'll need to break down your goals by different timelines — a vacation fund this year, saving for college in the next few and eventually retiring from the 9-to-5 grind.

This is where the help of a trusted financial advisor is money well spent. Your first few sessions will be talking through your financial priorities before building a roadmap together to make sure you've got the steps to get there.

With the right professional in your corner, it doesn't matter how skilled you are at balancing a checkbook or spreadsheet. They can handle the strategy while you live your best life.
