Gayle King is hitting back after President Donald Trump predicted an end to her career.

The longtime "CBS Mornings" host, 70, told TMZ as she exited the studio Tuesday, Aug. 5, that she was "sorry" he wasn't a fan of her journalism.

"I'm sorry he feels that way," she told the outlet, responding to a recent social media tirade in which the president called her "no talent."

"I like my job," she continued, adding she planned to "continue to do a good job," and that the ire she caught from Trump put her in a club with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift and Stephen Colbert – all entertainers whom the president has criticized over the years.

USA TODAY has reached out to King's reps for comment.

Trump took to Truth Social earlier this week to criticize King. Responding to a New York Post article claiming "CBS Mornings" may face an uncertain future amid parent company Paramount's merger with Skydance Media, the president claimed the news host's career was "over."

"Gayle King's career is over. She should have stayed with her belief in TRUMP," he wrote in a post to Truth Social. "She never had the courage to do so. No talent, no ratings, no strength!!!"

The president's comments follow a major win for his administration. In late July, Paramount settled a lawsuit with Trump over a claim of deceptive editing he brought following a "60 Minutes" interview with his then-political rival Kamala Harris. In the settlement, the entertainment giant agreed to pay $16 million toward Trump's future presidential library.

The settlement came as Paramount eagerly awaited a green light on an $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media, which required approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. The merger has since been approved, a move some critics characterized as a quid pro quo.

Speculation about what Paramount's content will look like under the merger also began to swirl following the cancellation of Colbert's "Late Show," where the host frequently critiques Trump. While Paramount said the decision to pull the plug was purely financial, voices from in and outside the industry argued it was a sign of political acquiescence as the White House cracks down on dissenting voices.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are taking a major next step in their relationship...allegedly!

Rumor has it that the couple have been looking at houses in Cleveland, and "visited at least two opulent homes currently for sale" in the "tony" suburbs according to the Cleveland Scene via Page Six.

The couple were actually spotted in Ohio earlier this summer (Tay was iconically wearing her own merch), and ended up being photographed at JoJo's Bar in Chagrin Falls.

The manager told People at the time that "Taylor and Travis came in and had a wonderful time. They had a great lunch, enjoyed our food, and were really impressed with the team. Travis grew up in Cleveland Heights, so he decided to visit somewhere he was familiar with. He and Taylor were both really pleasant. They sat at the bar for a bit, but also had a private lunch in a private room."

More recently—as in last month—a source told the outlet that Travis and Taylor "have talked about the future a lot," and that "They're in a really solid place and more in sync than ever. They're both all in."

They also chatted about Travis' recent relationship photo dump, saying "Travis posting Taylor on his Instagram for the first time wasn't random, it was intentional. They've been private in their own way, but this was his way of showing how serious things have become. There's no pressure between them, but they're very aligned on where things are going. He makes her feel safe and supported and she brings so much joy into his life. They're really happy."

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Egypt's foreign minister, on a visit to Greece on Wednesday, described the international response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza as shameful and urged powerful Western nations to increase pressure on Israel.

"The international community should be ashamed of the tragic situation unfolding in Gaza and the devastating actions being carried out by Israel," Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told reporters in Athens.

"What is unfolding is a human tragedy, and the suffering witnessed is a stain on the conscience of the international community," he said.

Widespread reports of hunger in Gaza have heightened international concern over the devastating consequences of Israeli military operations launched nearly two years ago, following deadly attacks by Hamas-led militants inside Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

The Egyptian minister described Israel's military campaign in the territory as a "systematic genocide," but reiterated his government's position that it "firmly rejects any displacement of the Palestinian people from their ancestral lands."

Abdelatty held a two-hour meeting with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis to discuss a planned undersea electricity grid connector between the two countries and an ongoing dispute between Greece and Libya over sea boundaries for offshore oil and gas exploration.

Greece and Egypt are also in talks over the legal status of the sixth-century Monastery of Saint Catherine in Egypt's Sinai Desert.

Gerapetritis said that he had received assurances Wednesday of Cairo's continued cooperation on both issues.

NEW YORK (AP) — The toll of wildfires is usually counted in acres burnt, property destroyed and lives lost to smoke and flames. But three studies published Wednesday suggest the cost to human health from the Maui and Los Angeles wildfires was substantially higher.

Two of the papers explore what happened after the Hawaii fire in August 2023 — one of the deadliest U.S. wildfires in a century. A third looks at the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.

The Maui fire was directly blamed for more than 100 deaths. But it also left 1 in 5 with lung damage and as many as half with symptoms of depression, the new research found. The month of the fire saw 13 suicide and overdose deaths, translating to nearly double the normal suicide and overdose death rates.

The study of the Los Angeles fires concluded that in addition to at least 30 deaths attributed to the fire, more than 400 other deaths could be blamed on the event, due to interruptions in health care and other factors.

The studies, published in two American Medical Association journals, add "a really important piece to the understanding of the true health risks from these extreme climatic events," said Dr. Jonathan Patz, a University of Wisconsin environmental public health researcher who was not involved in the papers.

The results conform with existing understanding of the effects of extreme weather events, some experts said.

How to track the indirect impacts of disastrous events has been a continuing subject of academic research and even legislative proposals. There have been estimates of deaths caused by extreme heat, as well as research into the large-scale toll of wildfires driven by climate change.

"But this hones in, especially on (specific) fires," Patz said.

One of the studies, co-led by Ruben Juarez of the University of Hawaii, looked at more than 1,100 adults six to 14 months after the Maui fire. It found lower lung function in people in areas close to the fire compared with those in lower-exposure areas. Overall, about 22% had below-normal lung function.

"It's a stark reminder that wildfires can leave an invisible but lasting scar on respiratory health, long after the flames are gone," Juarez said, in an email, noting that this Friday marks the two-year anniversary of the fire.

Patz called the finding "an important new contribution."

Kristie Ebi of the University of Washington echoed that, noting that there is a growing understanding that wildfire smoke can be more toxic than standard air pollution.

"It's not just leaves and branches and trees" that are burned, she said. "It's buildings. It's gasoline stations. It's old houses that have asbestos in them. It's automobiles. There are lots of components of wildfire smoke."

She said the study suggests "this toxicity is affecting people's long-term lung function."

Of course, the researchers don't know exactly how much smoke each person was exposed to, and other studies would need to be done to explore cause-and-effect, she added.

The study also found 40% saying their health had declined since the fires, with close to half talking about increased fatigue and weakness, eye irritation and lung-related symptoms.

Jonathan Purtle of New York University was the lead author of another study, which calculated rates of suicide and overdose deaths in Maui and Hawaii's four other counties. That research team found a 97% increase in suicides and overdose death rates on Maui during the month of the wildfires. The total number of suicide and overdose deaths was 13 that month — most of them suicides. That's a significant increase, Ebi said.

They also found a 46% increase in such deaths in all five counties, which may have been influenced by displaced Maui residents migrating to other islands, the authors said.

The increases did not last: Rates fells in the following months, the researchers found.

The third study was led by researchers in Finland. They used mathematical modeling to estimate that there were 440 more deaths in Los Angeles County from Jan. 5 to Feb. 1 than what would normally have been expected, and said those are related to the fires.

Norwegian police confirmed that Alec Luhn was found alive Wednesday morning and is being transported to a hospital via a rescue helicopter. He appeared to be in good condition other than an injury to his foot.

Luhn, 38, who has worked for The Guardian, The New York Times and The Atlantic, was reported missing on Monday to the Norwegian authorities after he did not appear for a scheduled flight from Bergen to England.

Authorities confirmed that Luhn is now on his way to Haukeland University Hospital in a rescue helicopter with no injuries major reported other than one to his foot.

Luhn had been on vacation with his family in the days before he set out on the hike. In England, Luhn lives with his wife, Veronika Silchenko, an Emmy-winning television journalist, who posted on social media urging anyone who may have seen Alec to get in touch.

Luhn had set out alone on the hike on July 31 from the town of Odda on the northeast edge of the Folgefonna, a wilderness park in western Norway that is home to the country's third-largest glacier.

Local police told Norway's public broadcaster NRK that a volunteer search was launched after he was reported missing and a rescue team, as well as the police, sniffer dogs and drones renewed the search for Luhn on Tuesday before being called off due to weather conditions.

Bad weather the night before had forced the search with a helicopter to be suspended overnight, local police said.

"The weather started to get really bad around midnight. At that time, it was not reasonable to continue the search up in the mountains," Tatjana Knappen, an operations manager at Western Police District, told NRK. Knappen said a strong gale was forecast to continue on Tuesday, but it was hoped there would be a possible window for the helicopter to operate.

Raised in the Midwest, Luhn graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2010 and worked as a foreign correspondent in Moscow for around a decade, primarily for The Guardian and The Telegraph newspapers. He later switched to focus on covering the effects of climate change. Luhn is a Pulitzer Center reporting fellow and currently writes for the Scientific American magazine. Along with a number of awards, Luhn also has two Emmy nominations.

Luhn is an experienced hiker who regularly travels to remote and challenging environments as a reporter, also often spending his vacations seeking out wildernesses, his friends and family said. He has trekked as part of a scientific expedition deep in the wilderness in Alaska and visited the Arctic in both Canada and Russia. He has also worked in conflict zones, including in Ukraine and Somalia.

Sharp-eyed Florida sheriff's deputies prevented a possible mass shooting Tuesday when they arrested a man armed to the teeth with high-powered guns just outside a busy airport, officials said.

Michael Rodrigues, 41, was in a rental car packed with an AR-15, at least two loaded magazines, and several knives parked outside the Palm Beach International Airport in a restricted lot, on Tuesday morning, the Miami Herald reported.

Palm Beach Sheriff's deputies approached the "suspicious" man at 7:10 a.m. as the suspect was getting dressed outside the car — discovering the small armory inside his vehicle after finding one loaded magazine in a glovebox, the outlet stated, citing the sheriff's office.

Some of those deadly weapons were concealed under a blanket in the car, according to the Herald.

Rodrigues was taken into custody without incident.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Wednesday eased a key term of the house arrest imposed on former President Jair Bolsonaro in his coup plot case, allowing family members to visit without prior authorization.

De Moraes' authorization, which followed a request from federal police, means the relatives will be able to visit the residence where Bolsonaro lives with his wife, Michelle, without first asking court for permission. It applies to Bolsonaro's sons and daughter, grandchildren and close relatives of his wife.

The conservative former leader is on trial for allegedly masterminding a coup plot to remain in office despite his election loss to current leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing.

The house arrest order has sharply divided Brazilians, with his supporters saying the case against Bolsonaro is persecution of a political adversary, while Lula supporters say the matter should be decided in court.

The case has gripped the South American country as it faces a trade war with the United States. Bolsonaro has drawn the support of the U.S. government, with President Donald Trump calling the prosecution of Bolsonaro a witch hunt and tying his decision to impose a 50% tariff on imported Brazilian goods to his ally's judicial situation.

The original house arrest order issued Monday allowed only Bolsonaro's lawyers to have unlimited access to his residence.

De Moraes, who is responsible for putting Bolsonaro on trial, had ordered the former president's house arrest for violating precautionary measures imposed on him by spreading content through his sons. The 70-year-old politician denies that and pledges to appeal the decision.

The court last month had ordered Bolsonaro to wear an electronic ankle monitor and obey a curfew while the proceedings are underway.
