An 11-year-old boy has died after being shot while playing a doorbell ditch prank in Houston on Saturday night, police said.

The boy and several other kids were ringing doorbells and running from multiple homes in an east Houston neighborhood, according to CNN affiliate KHOU. As the boy ran from a house on Racine Street just before 11 p.m., someone chased after him and shot him in the back, according to KHOU.

The boy was transported to hospital and was pronounced dead on Sunday, according to police.

One person was detained at the scene for questioning and has since been released, police said. Investigators are reviewing surveillance video and working with the Harris County District Attorney's Office on possible charges, KHOU reported.

"It'll more than likely be a murder charge," Sgt. Michael Cass, a homicide detective with the Houston Police Department, told KHOU, noting the boy's death does not appear to involve self-defense because the shooting "wasn't close to the house."

"Ding dong ditching" is an age-old prank that's risen in popularity in recent years as a social media challenge. TikTok videos often feature variations where pranksters pound on or kick people's front doors.

In a Dallas suburb at the end of July, a man fired multiple shots into a fleeing car after someone banged on his door, according to police. The man was arrested on charges of aggravated assault.

Some "ding dong ditch" pranks have turned deadly in the past.

In May, an 18-year-old high school senior in Virginia was shot and killed while filming a "ding dong ditch" to post on TikTok, The New York Times reported. The man accused of shooting the teen was charged with second-degree murder.

In 2020, three 16-year-olds were killed when a man rammed his car into their vehicle in retaliation for pulling a "ding dong ditch" prank on him. The man was convicted of three counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 2023.

Authorities across the country have raised concerns about the door knock challenge, warning of both the potential danger and legal consequences for those involved.

"Think it's funny to bang on doors and run? Think again," the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office in Indiana wrote in a Facebook post in August. "What might seem like a prank can lead to serious legal trouble, property damage, or worse – someone getting hurt."

"That's a good way to end up dead, especially in Florida," Sheriff Mike Chitwood of Florida's Volusia County Sheriff's Office told CNN affiliate WESH in July, after arresting a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy for kicking a local resident's door one night.

The teens were captured on a doorbell camera creeping up to a family's home and kicking the door before running away, WESH reported. Authorities took two hours to find them.

"You're endangering your future with this TikTok challenge," Chitwood said. "You're going to be charged with a felony." The two teens were charged with burglary, according to WESH.

MOSCOW/NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India's Narendra Modi told Vladimir Putin on Monday that India and Russia stood shoulder to shoulder even in difficult times after the Kremlin chief cast the Indian prime minister as his "dear friend" and gave him a lift in his armoured limousine.

China and India are the biggest purchasers of crude from Russia, the world's second largest exporter. Trump has imposed additional tariffs on India over the purchases but there is no sign that India or China are going to stop the purchases.

On the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in China's port city of Tianjin, Modi held Putin's hand as they walked towards Chinese President Xi Jinping. All three smiled as they spoke, surrounded by translators.

Later, Modi posted a picture on X of him and Putin inside the armoured Russian Aurus limousine used by the Kremlin chief. Modi told Putin at the bilateral meeting that India and Russia had stuck together even in hard times.

"Even in the most difficult situations, India and Russia have always walked shoulder to shoulder," Modi said. "Our close cooperation is important not only for the people of both countries but also for global peace, stability and prosperity."

At the bilateral meeting, Putin addressed Modi in Russian as "Dear Mr. Prime Minister, dear friend."

"Russia and India have maintained special relations for decades, friendly and trusting. This is the foundation for the development of our relations in the future," Putin said.

Modi said he welcomed recent efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

"We hope that all parties will move forward constructively. A way has to be found to end the conflict as soon as possible and establish permanent peace," Modi said.

Putin often travels with the Aurus on foreign trips and has occasionally offered rides to fellow leaders - or even gifted the vehicle, as he did to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2024.

BEIJING (Reuters) -China hopes Indonesia can take effective measures to protect Chinese nationals in the Southeast Asian country, foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday when asked about recent protests in Indonesia.

China understands and respects the Indonesian government's decision to cancel a trip by President Prabowo Subianto to Beijing, Guo also told a regular press conference. Prabowo had been due to attend a "Victory Day" parade in Beijing on September 3.

Prabowo's representative will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit and the military parade, Guo said.

Drew Barrymore has happily shifted her focus to her hit daytime talk show, but she made a surprising admission about a celebrity who just might lure her back to Hollywood.

With her bubbly personality and infectious charm, there's no doubt why the Charlie's Angels star won over audiences when she launchedThe Drew Barrymore Show in 2020.

However, in a recent episode, the actress admitted that despite the success of the CBS show, she was open to returning to the big screen, especially if this one particular actor were her co-star.

In one playful segment, Ross Mathews flipped the script and put Barrymore in the hot seat as the guest of her own show, firing off some sizzling questions.

"Question for you — who could get you back on the big screen?" he asked.

"Oh, I didn't see that coming," she laughed, giggling as if caught completely off guard.

"Same person, Adam Sandler. Always Adam," she said, as the audience erupted in cheers, showing their support for her former co-star.

On the other hand, her next statement sparked more excitement after she named another Hollywood star who might join them in a possible project.

"However, Adam knows that I really wanna work with him and Jennifer Aniston together," the former child star revealed. "They both know that."

The fun never stopped as the 50-year-old host said that they "have thought of ideas" and even "joked" about doing the '70s sitcom Three's Company.

However, Barrymore revealed that she toyed with the idea of doing a remake of Death Becomes Her, the 1992 comedy fantasy film starring Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis.

The actress' surprising remark sent fans into a frenzy, sparking chatter about what a project with the trio could look like.

"Drew's smile at the beginning. That would be the best trio in a movie! I'll bring the popcorn!" one wrote.

"Yes!!!! Please!!!" a commenter expressed excitement.

"The trio we love to see," another added.

The same goes for a different commenter who said, "MUST happen."

"Best idea ever to do Death Becomes Her, omg all three of you in it," a fan gushed, saying they can't wait for the dream project to come true.

"Just love this! Want this to happen," agreed another.

"Please! I love you and Adam Sandler together and I think the 3 of you would be so much fun to watch!" a user said.

Barrymore and Sandler have starred in multiple projects together, most of which were sure hits.

The first was the 1998 film The Wedding Singer, which turned out to be a fan favorite and a classic rom-com.

Six years later, they reunited for another rom-com, 50 First Dates. Released in 2004, the award-winning actor played Henry, a marine veterinarian who unexpectedly fell in love with Lucy, who suffers from short-term memory loss, portrayed by Barrymore.

Their third movie together was Blended. Released in 2014, it showcased the duo's undeniable chemistry that fans loved.

As for Aniston, she and Sandler headlined Just Go With It and the two installments of the action-comedy Murder Mystery.
