There has been a rich tradition of war movies since the silent days of the silver screen. Films in this genre can captivate our senses with sweeping battlefields and graphic depictions of combat, enlightening us with tales of triumph — and the worst humanity has to offer.

Modern films are especially able to bring the visceral imagery of century-old wars to life, such as in Oscar winners like *1917* (2019) and *All Quiet on the Western Front* (2022). Others use war to tell more expansive human stories and play in multiple genres, like *Da 5 Bloods* (2020).

Here are **'s recommendations for the best war movies streaming on Netflix right now.

George MacKay as Lance Corporal Schofield and Benedict Cumberbatch as Colonel Mackenzie in '1917'

In *1917*, director Sam Mendes fully engages the audience in the harrowing journey of a pair of British soldiers during World War I. Tasked with communicating an important message to a commander in person, lance corporals Will Schofield (George MacKay) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) navigate the chaos of the trenches and an onslaught of enemy fire.

Roger Deakins won an Oscar for his masterful cinematography, with long, unbroken takes, which, as **'s critic writes, "effectively drops the viewer into the center of the story and compels them to stay there, fully immersed in every muddy step, hunger pang, and rifle click." —*Kevin Jacobsen*

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

Albrecht Schuch as Stanislaus Katczinsky and Felix Kammerer as Paul Bäumer in 'All Quiet on the Western Front'

Albrecht Schuch as Stanislaus Katczinsky and Felix Kammerer as Paul Bäumer in 'All Quiet on the Western Front'. Netflix

The classic novel *All Quiet on the Western Front* has been adapted to film twice before, but this version by director Edward Berger is the first in the book's native German. Newcomer Felix Kammerer plays Paul Bäumer, a young German soldier who eagerly signs up to fight in World War I but gradually loses his innocence upon experiencing the hellishness of trench warfare.

Unlike the book and its previous adaptations, this version includes a storyline featuring the officials involved in ending the war. With stunning visuals and an ominous Oscar-winning score, EW's critic observes that *All Quiet on the Western Front* is "an antiwar drama that transcends the bombast of propaganda mostly just because it's so artfully and indelibly made." —*K.J.*

Beasts of No Nation (2015)

Idris Elba as Commandant and Abraham Attah as Agu in 'Beasts of No Nation'

Shawn Greene/Bleecker Street Media/Everett

It's the film that started the Netflix original movie storm. *Beasts of No Nation*, directed by Cary Fukunaga, follows Abu (Abraham Attah), a child soldier fighting in a civil war in an unnamed African country. Idris Elba costars as the Commandant, a despotic leader who preys on Abu.

The movie gained the spotlight after many major theaters boycotted it over the rise of VOD, a fight of the past now. The cast is phenomenal, especially Elba, who terrifies and takes away the humanity of Abu. Despite the positive critical reception, *Beasts *earned no Academy Award nominations but remains a must-see. —*Robert English*

**Director:** Cary Fukunaga

The Bombardment (2023)

Alex Høgh Andersen as Frederik in 'The Bombardment'

Alex Høgh Andersen as Frederik in 'The Bombardment'.

The Danish film *The Bombardment *— also known as* The Shadow in My Eye *— is based on true events. During World War II, the Royal Air Force (RAF) agreed to bomb a Gestapo headquarters located in Copenhagen. But when an accident leads to a local school also being mistaken for a target, the fates of Danish resistance fighters, children, and nuns collide.

The subject matter is challenging and director Ole Bornedal handles it gracefully, shooting his film beautifully, and treating his story's heroes and victims with respect. His contribution represents yet another important piece in the puzzle of World War II — a haunting film immortalizing a little-known story whose subjects deserve to be remembered. *—Ilana Gordon*

Da 5 Bloods (2020)

Delroy Lindo as Paul, Jonathan Majors as David, and Clarke Peters as Otis in 'Da 5 Bloods'

Delroy Lindo as Paul, Jonathan Majors as David, and Clarke Peters as Otis in 'Da 5 Bloods'.

David Lee/Netflix

Spike Lee has already proven himself as a legend of the big screen, so it's no surprise that his tribute to Vietnam War veterans was another hit for the Oscar winner. *Da 5 Bloods* weaves the present and past as four vets return to Vietnam to seek the remains of their fallen squad leader (Chadwick Boseman in one of his final film roles) and their buried treasure.

The film manages to juggle two themes: the emotional toll on the soldiers and a conversation about race in the 1970s and America's role in the war. The result is stunning, with EW's critic calling the director "a filmmaker who remains in total control of his once-in-a-generation gifts and utilizes them to synthesize story and history into something new." —*R.E.*

The Forgotten Battle (2021)

Jamie Flatters as William Sinclair and Tom Felton as Tony Turner in 'The Forgotten Battle'

Netflix/Courtesy Everett

Described as the "Dutch version of Dunkirk," *The Forgotten Battle* is a 2020 war drama directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Set in 1944 and centered around the Battle of the Scheldt during World War II, the movie follows a soldier in the Germany army (Gjis Blom), a Brtiish glider pilot (Jamie Flatters), and a Dutch woman (Susan Radder) who ends up fighting in the resistance.

When these three disparate characters find themselves on a collision course, their actions will have an impactful effect on the worldwide conflict. Based on a true story and shot primarily in Dutch and English with some German, the film tells a little known war story in a terse, thrilling, and character-driven style. *—I.G.*

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

Andrew Garfield as Desmond T. Doss in 'Hacksaw Ridge'

Andrew Garfield as Desmond T. Doss in 'Hacksaw Ridge'. Mark Rogers

*Hacksaw Ridge* is a gripping war film whose protagonist is ironically a pacifist. Based on the true story of Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist who served as a combat medic during World War II and consciously refused to use a weapon, the film delves into his belief system leading up to and during the war, and his struggle to stay devoted to his cause.

Andrew Garfield earned an Oscar nomination for his earnest performance as Doss, and the film, while a smidge too sentimental in the home front first half, is riveting in its battle-heavy second. "The latter — a bone-rattling shock-and-awe of blasted limbs and spilled intestines," EW's critic writes, "is infinitely more affecting than the former." *—K.J.*

The Hurt Locker (2008)

Jeremy Renner as Staff Sergeant William James in 'The Hurt Locker'

Jeremy Renner as Staff Sergeant William James in 'The Hurt Locker'. Summit Entertainment

When your job requires you to disable bombs in the heat of battle, you suit up for work each day like it might be your last. In the second year of the Iraq War, Staff Sergeant James (Jeremy Renner) arrives to fill a vacancy in the Bravo Company, but finds that his unwillingness to communicate his plans and gonzo method of defusing bombs doesn't always jive with the rest of his company — especially Sergeant J. T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie).

From former reporter and screenwriter Mark Boal (*Zero Dark Thirty*) and director Kathryn Bigelow, whose work on this film made her the first woman to walk away with the Best Director Oscar, *The Hurt Locker* is realistic, intense, and action-packed, chronicling the many effects war has on the people who fight it. As EW's critic at the time says, "This ain't no war videogame, no flashy, cinematic art piece; there's nothing virtual about this reality." *—I.G.*

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Brad Pitt at Lt. Aldo Raine (right) in 'Inglourious Basterds'

Brad Pitt at Lt. Aldo Raine (right) in 'Inglourious Basterds'. Francois Duhamel/TWC

Quentin Tarantino's take on a World War II action film, *Inglourious Basterds*, presents an alternate version of the conflict as told through two parallel plots to assassinate Hitler. The first assassination is planned by the "Basterds," a unit of Jewish American soldiers led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) who are known for their legendary Nazi killing abilities. The second plot is architected by Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent), a Jewish woman living undercover in France after surviving an encounter with SS Officer Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), a.k.a. "the Jew Hunter."

The action is brutal and bloody, the dialogue is filled with that signature Quentin quip, and the ensemble cast is lousy with standouts. Waltz is chief among them, and his performance of the genteel and charismatic Nazi psychopath rightfully earned him the Best Supporting Oscar trophy at that year's Academy Awards. *—I.G.*

Jarhead (2005)

Jake Gyllenhaal as Anthony Swofford in 'Jarhead'

Jake Gyllenhaal as Anthony Swofford in 'Jarhead'.

Universal Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection

Adapted from Anthony Swofford's 2003 memoir, *Jarhead* is a movie about the mundanity of modern warfare. Swofford, played here by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a Marine sniper who is deployed to the Arabian Peninsula as part of Operation Desert Shield. Desperate for action, he and his unit are sidelined waiting for their assignment, forced to stew in their frustration, fear, and boredom.

Far from glorifying the battlefield, *Jarhead* paints the Marine experience as one of tedium and anxiety, loneliness and machismo-one-upmanship. Gyllenhaal is excellent as the battle-starved Swofford, and director Sam Mendes manages to make a compelling war movie with almost no action. EW's critic writes, "*Jarhead* is an existential docudrama: cool and funny, vivid and remote at the same time."* —I.G.*

Where to watch *Jarhead*: Netflix

**Director: **Sam Mendes

**Cast: **Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Lucas Black, Jamie Foxx

The King (2019)

Timothée Chalamet as Hal/Henry V in 'The King'

Timothée Chalamet as Hal/Henry V in 'The King'.

William Shakespeare's plays *Henry IV* and *Henry V* take the backseat for a new look at the wartorn and political landscape of Henry V's rise to power. Timothée Chalamet stars as the young king, bowl-cut and all, as he navigates the fight for the crown across feudal England and France. Chalamet and costar Robert Pattinson are the film's standouts, with eccentric looks and passionate monologues.

The action is gritty, "a series of grand battleground set pieces," EW's critic cites, recalling images of *Game of Thrones*' Battle of the Bastards. And according to Chalamet, these war scenes and duels are suffocating and intense, "properly messy and dangerous." —*R.E.*

Where to watch *The King*: Netflix

**EW grade:** B

**Director:** David Michôd

**Cast:** Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, Joel Edgerton, Lily-Rose Depp, Ben Mendelsohn, Sean Harris

Mosul (2019)

Jose Haro/Netflix/Everett

Set in war-torn Mosul, this Arabic-language war movie centers on the skirmishes fought between an Iraqi SWAT team and ISIS insurgents during the 2016 Battle of Mosul. After 21-year-old police officer Kawa survives an ISIS attack, he agrees to accompany a SWAT team on their quest to free Mosul from militants. As Kawa navigates the ravaged city and fights alongside the other officers, he struggles to find answers to his questions about the purposes of the SWAT team's secret mission. **

Inspired by a 2017 article about the battle within Iraq to destroy ISIS, *Mosul *premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, and received positive feedback for offering a new perspective on the violence in the region. Nuanced and thoughtful in spite of the violence, the film ends with a surprisingly heartwarming twist. *—I.G.*

Munich — The Edge of War (2021)

Jeremy Irons as Neville Chamberlain in 'Munich — The Edge of War'

Jeremy Irons as Neville Chamberlain in 'Munich — The Edge of War'. Everett Collection

*Munich — The Edge of War* is a fictional accounting of a pivotal historical period. Based on Robert Harris' bestselling novel, the film follows two old college friends — Hugh Legat, a British civil servant, and Paul von Hartmann, a German diplomat — as they find themselves drawn into the center of Europe's political powder keg.

A good, old-fashioned spy story with deep stakes, the film examines Neville Chamberlain's (Jeremy Irons) role in the time leading up to World War II in a new light. A historical thriller that is sure to captivate, you won't regret devoting two hours of your time to *Munich — The Edge of War.* *—I.G.*

Torfinn Nag as Colonel Konrad Sundlo and Holger Handtke as German General Eduard Dietl in 'Narvik'

Torfinn Nag as Colonel Konrad Sundlo and Holger Handtke as German General Eduard Dietl in 'Narvik'.

Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection

Seven months after World War II began, a small town in Norway found itself in Hitler's crosshairs. Narvik was rich in the iron ore the German army required for its many wartime needs, and for 62 days in the spring of 1940, the Norwegians and Allied forces attempted to repel a German invasion.

A little-known Norwegian historical film that gives a human face to the Battles of Narvik, *Narvik *follows Corporal Gunnar Tofte, his wife Ingrid, and their son Ole as the three struggle to survive the German attack. The movie presents a fascinating look at the ethical negotiations required by both soldiers and civilians during war, and the performances and cinematography are especially excellent. *—I.G.*

Number 24 (2024)

Philip Helgar as Edvard Tallaksen in 'Number 24'

Philip Helgar as Edvard Tallaksen in 'Number 24'.

There's no better representative of Norway's World War II resistance movement than Gunnar Fridtjof Thurmann Sønsteby — or "Agent No. 24" as he is known to the Gestapo agents hunting him. The recipient of Norway's highest military decoration, Gunnar's story as a leader in Norway's fight to sabotage their German occupiers is told across parallel timelines.

In the present, Gunnar (Erik Hivju) is Norway's greatest war hero, asked to give a presentation to school children about his activities during the war. The film then flashes back to his time as a 25-year-old (played by Sjur Vatne Brean) deciding to join the resistance. Director John Andreas Andersen toggles between these two realities, using a question and answer session with his student audience to unlock the secret drawer of memories that Gunnar struggles to keep shut tight. A terse war thriller and tribute to one of Norway's bravest and most successful resistance fighters, *Number 24 *is must-see reminder of what it looks like to fight fascism at all ages. *—I.G.*

Where to watch *Number 24*: Netflix

Operation Mincemeat (2022)

Colin Firth as Ewen Montagu in 'Operation Mincemeat'

Colin Firth as Ewen Montagu in 'Operation Mincemeat'. Giles Keyte/See-Saw Films/Netflix

What do you get when you combine two former Mr. Darcys and a war drama? You get *Operation Mincemeat* starring Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen, based on real events that took place during World War II. **

Without giving too much away, imagine what it would look like if James Bond writer Ian Fleming helped the British Army to pass misinformation to the Nazis intended to convey a plan to invade Greece. Add in a love triangle and some high-stakes wartime strategy, and you have a story so absurdly engaging, it's hard to remember that it's true. Featuring excellent performances from both Firth and Macfadyen, *Operation Mincemeat* is well-written and self-aware enough to find humor within the horrors of war. *—I.G.*

Outlaw King (2018)

Chris Pine as Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick in 'Outlaw King'

Chris Pine as Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick in 'Outlaw King'.

David Eustace/Netfix

This medieval war drama transports us back to the early 1300s in Scotland, where Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine) gradually ascends to King of Scots. Hoping to free Scotland from England's tyranny, he leads his country in battle against the English army.

While not groundbreaking in its approach, *Outlaw King* is a reliably bloody (and muddy) epic full of heavy skirmishes. Director David Mackenzie "films it beautifully in the natural light of candles, torches, and overcast skies," writes EW's critic, "and there's a solidness to the old-fashioned conventions of his storytelling." —*K.J.*

Where to watch *Outlaw King*: Netflix

**EW grade:** B+

**Director:** David Mackenzie

The Patriot (2000)

Mel Gibson as Benjamin Martin in 'The Patriot'

Mel Gibson as Benjamin Martin in 'The Patriot'.

Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection

The screenwriter behind *Saving Private Ryan* and the director behind *Independence Day* team up for *The Patriot*, an epic action film set during the Revolutionary War. Mel Gibson stars as a former war hero forced back onto the battlefield and into *Taken *mode after one of his sons (played by Heath Ledger) is captured by the British.

A singularly turn-of-the-century blockbuster, *The Patriot* is ultranationalistic, eschewing historical realities in favor of extended battle sequences and heavy production value. However, EW's critic at the time writes that the movie's "second hour, in which father and son come to know each other as men through word and deed, carries far more weight than any way cool shot of a cannonball carrying off a soldier's head." *—I.G.*

Where to watch *The Patriot*: Netflix

World history since 1945 has created several opportunities for crises to transform into World War III, and one of those incidents took place in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the early '60s. A true story you've probably never heard, *The Siege of Jadotville* follows an Irish company led by Cmdr. Pat Quinlan (Jamie Dornan) deployed to keep the peace in the region after the execution of the Congolese Prime Minister portends civil war.

When a U.N. attack against the capitol prompts retaliation against the Irish forces, Quinlan and his men are forced to repel the attackers, but find themselves outnumbered and without reinforcements. A scrappy war drama adapted from the 2005 nonfiction book *The Siege at Jadotville: The Irish Army's Forgotten Battle*, *Siege *is an interesting and gripping look inside a little-known skirmish that could have gone global. *—I.G.*

Where to watch *The Siege of Jadotville*: Netflix

One of World War II's lesser-known stories is the heroic tale of the Six Triple Eight. During the conflict, the 6888 was the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve overseas. Their mission was to improve morale by establishing a functional postal service capable of delivering three years' worth of backlogged mail to troops and their loved ones.

Tyler Perry adapts and directs the true story of the Central Postal Directory Battalion into a dramatic and inspirational war movie. Kerry Washington stars as Maj. Charity Adams, the unflinching leader who battles racism and low expectations to do her duty and do right by her fellow soldiers. Hailed as Perry's most ambitious cinematic feature to date, *The Six Triple Eight *is an empowering film, told from a perspective not often seen in World War II movies. *—I.G.*

There are many excellent movies about the Iraq War, but *Thank You for Your Service* doesn't focus on the conflict. An adaptation of a non-fiction book about veterans returning from service and reintegrating into society, the film investigates the role PTSD and broken bureaucratic systems play in soldiers' lives after discharge.

Miles Teller stars as Sgt. Adam Schumann, a husband and father of two who is struggling to process his trauma and guilt. EW's critic writes that the movie is "successful at capturing the Iraq War's effects on American lives," and praises Teller's performance, stating that "in many ways Adam is still just a boy in man's clothes." *—I.G.*

A satirical war comedy that EW's critic calls a "smart, sharp spitball of a film," *War Machine *spoofs the United States' conflict in Afghanistan. Loosely inspired by a 2010 article profiling the military leader responsible for commanding America's forces in the region, *War Machine *stars Brad Pitt as a fictitious character named Gen. Glen McMahon who has been personally assigned by President Obama to lead America's war efforts.

McMahon believes the war can be won, but struggles to get the troops he needs to complete the task. Pitt leads an accomplished cast of comedic and character actors, and while the film's satire doesn't always accomplish its goal, the performances make up for the movie's uneven moments. —*I.G.*

Welcome to your mental vacation. We hope you enjoy an action-packed itinerary. Your trip will take you from CIA headquarters to a dystopian future Earth, and everywhere in between. The characters you'll meet on your journey have little use for small talk and prefer to lead with their feet and fists, but don't be offended: It's not you, it's them.

With denouements set around the world and redemption arcs that eschew the erudite in favor of pure, physical effort, this list of the best action films currently streaming on Netflix has something for everyone on your couch to enjoy.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

Mike Myers as Austin Powers in 'Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me'

Mike Myers as Austin Powers in 'Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me'.

K. Wright/New Line

Mike Myers' comedy dominated the '90s, but his central contribution to culture came courtesy of the Austin Powers* *franchise. Powers, a British spy living in the swinging '60s, volunteers to be cryogenically frozen after his nemesis, the aptly named Dr. Evil (also Myers, played with an accent that is suspiciously reminiscent of fellow Canadian and *Saturday Night Live* boss, Lorne Michaels), escapes in a rocket. When Dr. Evil returns to Earth in the '90s, Powers is unfrozen and tasked with hunting him down — but after 30 years in a freezer, can he evolve his energy from groovy to grunge?

Featuring Heather Graham as CIA agent Felicity Shagwell and Seth Green as Dr. Evil's estranged son, the film is a lighthearted, foul-mouthed, satirical take on vintage spy films. *—Ilana Gordon*

Baby Driver (2017)

Ansel Elgort as Baby in 'Baby Driver'

Ansel Elgort as Baby in 'Baby Driver'.

Wilson Webb/Sony

An action crime thriller two decades in the making, director Edgar Wright puts the pedal to the metal with *Baby Driver*, transforming what could have been just another heist film into a stylistic masterpiece with a soundtrack to match. The movie follows a young getaway driver named Baby (Ansel Elgort) whose attempts to extricate himself from a life of crime go awry after he is forced to participate in a post office robbery.

Baby is a fantastic character — a young, Southern kid with tinnitus and a tragic past — surrounded by violent sadists, and the film is part mixtape, part love story, and part *Reservoir Dogs*-style murder romp. EW's critic writes that *Baby Driver* "is a candy-colored action movie opera, where the music doesn't just accompany the action — it fuels it." *—I.G.*

Inspired by the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking incident, where four Somali pirates seized a U.S. cargo ship sailing through the Indian Ocean, *Captain Phillips* features a tour de force performance from Tom Hanks as Capt. Richard Phillips, a man who stands his ground armed only with his thick Massachusetts accent. Meanwhile, then-newcomer Barkhad Abdi, who plays the desperate hijacker leading the raid on Phillips' ship, balances violence with vulnerability in an Oscar-nominated turn.

The kind of film where you find yourself rooting for the heroes while still empathizing with the villains, *Captain Phillips*' actors and script are tough enough to navigate the most dangerous waters. *—I.G.*

David Lee/Netflix

Wars and wounds collide in Spike Lee's 2020 film *Da 5 Bloods*, a meditation on race, generational trauma, and American intervention. Toggling between the past and present, the film follows four Black war veterans as they return to Vietnam, intent on recovering a locker of gold bars and the body of their fallen friend and squad leader, Stormin' Norman (Chadwick Boseman), both of which were lost during a napalm strike.

Guided in their quest by Tiên, the ex-girlfriend of one of the former soldiers, and forced to confront landmines — both real and emotional — the remainder of the squad must reconcile the horrors of their past with the difficulties of their present if they hope to escape Vietnam for a better future. Incorporating archival newsreel for additional context, *Da 5 Bloods* is a war film with action sequences, but many of the battles pit man against his memory. *—I.G.*

The characters in *Groundhog Day* and *Palm Springs* might have thought they were stuck in the worst time loops possible, but they were never forced to die in the same battle over and over again. In *Edge of Tomorrow*, Tom Cruise stars as Major Cage, a public affairs officer who is more accustomed to running his mouth than discharging his weapons.

After Cage is dispatched to the front lines against aliens known as Mimics who have overtaken Earth, he finds himself repeatedly dying in the same fight — and the only person who believes him is war hero Sgt. Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who once experienced something similar. Doubted by the Army, including General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson), it's up to Vrataski and Cage to devise a plan to use Cage's looping abilities to destroy the Mimics and save humanity. *—I.G.*

*Godzilla Minus One* won the 2024 Oscar for Best Visual Effects, but the film is so much more than a monster movie with incredible CGI. Set in Japan, a country ravaged by the after-effects of World War II, the film follows a failed kamikaze pilot as he is haunted both by his performance during the war and a gargantuan monster with a heat ray capable of razing Tokyo.

A love story disguised as a horror movie, *Godzilla Minus One* offers stunning performances, a fascinating historical perspective, and — of course — the kind of city-trampling mayhem one would expect when selecting a *Godzilla *movie. You know they did a good job when the filmmaker has you sympathizing with both the monster and the citizens rallying to defeat it. *—I.G.*

Regina King as Trudy Smith, Idris Elba as Rufus Buck, and LaKeith Stanfield as Cherokee Bill in 'The Harder They Fall'.

David Lee/Netflix

Though it suffers at times from Netflix's in-house mandate for too-clean disposable content, this stylish revisionist Western boasts an undeniably stacked and magnetic cast. Jonathan Majors stars as the raffish outlaw on a quest to hunt down those responsible for his requisite personal tragedy. Meanwhile, a characteristically hypnotic Idris Elba is the baddest man in the West, with a gang including the equally formidable likes of Regina King and LaKeith Stanfield.

Luckily, Majors has everyone from the great Delroy Lindo to Stanfield's *Atlanta* costar Zazie Beetz on his side, as *The Harder They Fall* presents an Old West populated by many of the greatest Black actors working today. While co-writer/director Jeymes Samuel (aka The Bullitt)'s script centers on the oft-ignored real figures of the Black West, his film is, at its thoroughly entertaining heart, a rip-roaring display of action setpieces and acting excellence. Style over substance? Sure. But *The Harder They Fall* has style to burn. *—Dennis Perkins*

Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Jasin Boland/Warner Bros.

It took 30 years for George Miller to make a follow-up to his original *Mad Max* trilogy, the last of which — *Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome* — premiered in 1985. But the three decades in between iterations of the franchise were not wasted, and *Mad Max: Fury Road* hits the gas immediately, sprinting off into a dystopian desert wasteland for a high-speed pursuit that wastes no time on exposition.

We pick up with Mad Max (Tom Hardy, assuming the mantle of his predecessor, Mel Gibson), who has been taken prisoner by an evil warlord. Unbeknownst to the warlord, his lieutenant — Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) — is about to break his wives out of the Citadel. The results play out in violent fashion, capturing, as EW's critic writes, "the same Molotov-cocktail craziness of Miller's masterpiece, 1981's *The Road Warrior.*" *—I.G.*

20th Century Fox Film Corp./Everett

When *Mr. & Mrs. Smith* premiered in 2005, it was preceded by its reputation. Five months earlier, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston announced their separation after seven years of marriage, which was allegedly initiated after Pitt met and fell in love with his co-star, Angelina Jolie, during production on *Mr. & Mrs. Smith*. The celebrity buzz was more than enough to coax audiences into theaters, and once they got there, they were greeted by a film that was half action movie, half therapy session.

The story follows an unhappy couple (Pitt and Jolie), both of whom are undercover assassins working for competing companies — and have received an assignment to kill the other. Screenwriter Simon Kinberg was inspired by the five-step process employed in couples counseling, a template he used to help ground the Smiths' otherwise exceptional lives into something far more relatable. *—I.G.*

Two years before Bong Joon Ho wowed the world with *Parasite, *the South Korean director partnered with Netflix to make *Okja*. A pig-centered movie that leans decidedly more toward *Animal Farm* than *Babe*, the movie follows Mija, a South Korean teen who bonds with Okja, the "super pig" she's helped raise — only to have Okja taken from her after he is crowned the winner of an agrochemical company's competition for best pig. With Okja headed for the slaughterhouse, Mija travels from South Korea to New York City on a mission to save her friend and to help expose the inhumane practices of the Mirando Corporation and its leader, Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton).

A mixture of science, fantasy, action, and adventure, *Okja *is one of those movies you have to see to believe. As EW's critic writes, *Okja* is "the antithesis of cookie-cutter, made-by-committee filmmaking. Prepare to be amazed, grossed out, provoked, punchdrunk, and tickled." —*I.G.*

Immortality comes with a price, as seen in *The Old Guard*. Andy (Charlize Theron) is part of a group of centuries-old warriors who have been gifted the power to heal from any wound. Unable to die, this team utilizes their talents by working as mercenaries for various mortal employers. Are they heroes or villains? It depends on what century they're living in. But when one particular mission exposes their extraordinary abilities, the group must band together to avoid capture by Big Pharma, who hopes to study, replicate, and monetize their gifts.

Aided by the group's newest member, a U.S. Marine (Kiki Layne), Andy and her team fight for their freedom in this action-packed film based on an acclaimed series of graphic novels. Theron is in peak fighting form, even as her character begins to slow after centuries of regenerating. Will Ferrell as Det. Allen Gamble and Mark Wahlberg as Det.Terry Hoitz in 'The Other Guys'. Macall Polay

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg team up for a buddy cop action comedy that will be relatable to anyone who doesn't thrive under pressure. Ferrell and Wahlberg play Allen Gamble and Terry Hoitz, two NYPD detectives who have been relegated to desk duty. Gamble (Ferrell) loves his orderly existence while Hoitz (Wahlberg) rages against his new assignment, which he acquired after mistakenly shooting Derek Jeter. But when the most Alpha cops on the force die in the line of duty, it's up to *The Other Guys* to investigate the biggest crime the city has seen in years.

Ferrell and Wahlberg are perfectly cast as an odd couple duo and director Adam McKay is a pro at satirizing a genre that has turned law enforcement officers into superheroes. EW's critic writes that the film "is aimed at all of us out there who long for excitement yet cling to safety because we're more desk jockey than supercop ourselves." *—I.G.*

Set in early 14th-century Scotland during the Scottish Wars of Independence (also known as *Braveheart* times), Scottish King Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine) finds himself leading a rebellion against the English King Edward I, an act which causes him to be labeled an outlaw. Based on an untold true story, *Outlaw King *follows Robert and those loyal to him as they embark on a guerilla mission to retake the lands stolen from them by the English, even as the English brutally murder their families. Long before Seth Rogen was making pot paraphernalia, he was making stoner films — and *Pineapple Express* is one for the ages. A crime comedy, the movie follows Dale (Rogen) and his drug dealer Saul (James Franco) as they flee town after Dale accidentally witnesses a corrupt cop and a drug lord execute a rival gang leader.

Rogen and his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg wrote the script — likely with the help of a few *Pineapple Express*-infused brainstorming sessions — and the movie excels in its more physical moments. Watching the film even feels like being high, thanks to the stylistic choices made by director David Gordon Green. EW's critic writes, "he brings the movie his own loping, run-on style, which turns out to be a perfect expression of the stoner rhythm." *—I.G.*

If there was a pill that could give you five minutes of pure power, would you take it? Such is the premise behind *Project Power*, a science fiction action film produced by Netflix. In a good example of strange bedfellows,* Project Power* follows a trio consisting of a police officer (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a soldier (Jamie Foxx), and a drug dealer (Dominique Fishback as seen in *The Deuce*), as they work together to halt distribution on a new kind of drug that has recently hit the streets of New Orleans.

If you're looking for an action thriller that moves fast, *Project Power*, an EW critic writes, "makes it easy to suspend your disbelief and your imaginary degree in biochemistry, and just let it ride." *—I.G.*

Though 2022 saw the triumph of *Everything Everywhere All at Once*, there existed another film that was also a pageant of absurd, maximalist thrill that left MCU blushing in its wake. Part buddy-comedy, part action-thriller, part historical drama, part musical, S. Rajamouli's Telugu-language blockbuster set in the 1920s — which won the Oscar for Original Song ("Naatu Naatu"), making history as the first song from an Indian feature film to win in that category — is a semi-historical story centered around the unlikely camaraderie between two Indian revolutionaries, Komaram Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan), who band together against British imperialism.

An explosion of electrifying spectacles, *RRR *successfully melds over-the-top action sequences — from battling tigers to swinging motorcycles — campy dance numbers, and emotional story lines into one cohesive theatrical experience. *—James Mercadante*

Angelina Jolie loves a war story, but her second foray into feature directing represents a return to classic World War II cinema, and is far more patriotic than one would expect given her brand. The film in question, *Unbroken, *is adapted from the 2010 nonfiction book by Laura Hillenbrand about World War II hero Louis Zamperini. A former Olympian who ran track before enlisting in the Air Force, Zamperini was captured as a Japanese POW and his journey through captivity is as tumultuous as one might expect. *Unbroken *sometimes seems almost old-fashioned in its presentation and subject matter, but Zamperini's story of heroism remains triumphant, and Jolie doesn't shy away from its most abusive and abhorrent moments. *—I.G.*

Fans are convinced that Travis Kelce's ex, Kayla Nicole, may have taken a subtle swipe at her former partner and his fiancée Taylor Swift.

Taking to Instagram on Friday, October 31, Nicole, 33, shared a post showing off her Halloween outfit for 2025.

In the post, the influencer showed she had dressed up as Toni Braxton for the holiday, specifically recreating the singer's look from her "He Wasn't Man Enough" music video.

It was the song choice that sent her followers into a tail spin, with several interpreting it as a subtle dig at Kelce, 36. (Nicole and Kelce dated from 2017 to 2022.)

Travis Kelce and Ex-Girlfriend Kayla Nicole's Relationship Timeline: The Way They Were

"The shade is real 😂" wrote one follower. Another added, "This is how you have the last laugh.. ☺️👏🏽👏🏽"

Another follower wrote, "Somebody gon check on TayTay? 🥴"

The song, which was released in 2000, was a hit for Braxton, who won a Grammy the following year for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for the track.

"Listen, girl / Who do you think I am? / Don't you know that he was my man? / But I chose to let him go / So why do you act like I still care about him?" part of the song's lyrics read.

In other parts of the song, the lyrics continued, "What you thinkin'? / Stop blamin' me / He wasn't man enough for me / If you don't know, now here's the chance / I've already had your man."

Kayla Nicole. (Photo by John Lamparski/Getty Images)

Swifties have previously theorized that The Life of a Show Girl's new song "Opalite" is subtly shading Nicole with its lyrics.

"You couldn't understand it / Why you felt alone / You were in it for real / She was in her phone / You were just a pose," Swift, 35, sings on the track. "And don't we try to love love / And give it all we got / You finally left the table / And what a simple thought / You're starving 'til you're not."

Some fans believe Swift is subtly referencing Nicole, with many pointing to a resurfaced social media clip of Kelce and Nicole interacting at dinner during their relationship.

"Oh, my God. Get off your phone," Kelce said in one resurfaced clip. "Get off your phone. … You're not even drinking your wine anymore, can we go?"

Travis Kelce's Dating History: From 'Catching Kelce' Winner to Taylor Swift

Nicole has also recently been accused of subtly taking a jab at Swift following the singer's 12th studio album release, which featured "Opalite" among its track list.

The album dropped on October 3. Just one day later, the influencer shared a cryptic post via her Instagram Stories.

Nicole shared a throwback clip of Eva Marcille's America's Next Top Model audition from cycle 3 in 2004.

"How do you compare yourself to other girls out there?" host Tyra Banks asked Marcille, now 40, in the footage.

Marcille quickly responded, "I don't compare myself to other girls. I'm Eva. I'm no comparison to anyone else."

Although Nicole did not explain the post or offer up any additional context at the time, some Swifties believed it may have been her way of addressing the song.

Swift and Kelce have been dating since summer 2023 and announced their engagement in August.

Spoiler alert! We're discussing important plot points and the ending of "Bugonia" (in theaters now) so beware if you haven't seen it yet.

Emma Stone is digging her alien era.

In director Yorgos Lanthimos' dark sci-fi comedy "Bugonia," pharmaceutical CEO Michelle Fuller (Stone) is kidnapped by conspiracy-theorist cousins Teddy (Jesse Plemons) and Don (Aidan Delbis) because Teddy believes her to be from outer space and bent on taking over the Earth. That's partly revealed to be true: Michelle is the Andromedan empress who's infiltrated mankind but her intentions aren't entirely bad.

A high-powered CEO (Emma Stone) gets kidnapped when some conspiracy theorists believe she's an alien in "Bugonia."

Michelle's introduction in the movie − starting off being awkward around her employees – "was so sort of perfect," Stone says. "You don't know whether that's her being not human or her being an inhuman CEO."

The cousins shave her head to keep her from communicating with her mothership (via hair), a vessel Teddy believes is coming in four days to coincide with a lunar eclipse. Teddy tries to force Michelle into admitting she's not human. Truths are revealed and the situation turns explosively bonkers before a rather bleak finale.

These are the biggest spoilers from "Bugonia," from Stone's take on the ending to that fitting needle drop in the film's final moments.

What happens in the ending of 'Bugonia'?

Don (Aidan Delbis, far left) and Teddy (Jesse Plemons) keep Michelle (Emma Stone) chained up in the basement in "Bugonia."

The wild final act features Michelle explaining to Teddy that, yep, she's a royal Andromedan and humans are a creation of her race, put on Earth after the aliens accidentally killed off dinosaurs in their arrival. But over millennia, mankind has evolved in unfortunate ways, as humans continually combat each other and poison the planet.

Michelle offers to take Teddy to her ship − via a transporter in her office closet − but he's wearing a suicide bomber vest and he accidentally blows himself up. That's the last straw, because Michelle decides it's time to end humanity: On her ship, she pops the bubble on a model of Earth, leaving the planet suddenly full of corpses as everyone dies.

"Jesse always thinks I'm crazy for this," Stone says, but Michelle "really does, I believe, want very much to save the world. It's devastating to her in the end to have to make peace with the fact that they have become a poison to the planet and that the planet needs to move on. So even though there are some villainous moments within her, deep down, she does care about the promise of humanity and yet has been consistently disappointed by the reality of what people do to themselves and do to each other."

For Stone, Michelle's monologue that connects humans and Andromedans reflects a lot of real-world themes, "this draw to addiction and to destroying other people and destroying yourselves and poisoning everything, whether it's yourself or the planet," she says. "I do think a lot of that is true. There is a sort of death drive that can exist in our human form. But there's also a great capacity for hope and positivity. It's just which side is going to win out in any given moment."

What's up with Emma Stone's full-body sweater in 'Bugonia'?

Emma Stone gets a business wardrobe to wear early in "Bugonia" before rocking something out of this world at the end of the movie.

With the Andromedans, Lanthimos says he wanted to come up with "something we hadn't seen before, not a cliche science-fiction kind of visual." Because they're an ancient civilization, he wanted to use "a lot of organically created things" and even their mothership "looks almost like a sea creature in the depths of an ocean."

Then there's the Andromedan wardrobe, which consists of what looks like knitted full-body sweaters and a hat. "It was really incredible in its construction, but it was like a cage underneath and it trapped all heat," Stone says. "We were on a soundstage, and so all of the Andromedans were like, 'Oh, my God!' It was so heavy. It had the look of cozy while being the polar opposite but so brilliant."

Plemons' most interesting accessory was more gruesome: A bust of his decapitated head goes flying when his bomb vest goes off, and he's got "a great photo" of Stone holding it, "which I will cherish forever."

What's that song heard in the 'Bugonia' finale?

In its final moments, the movie shows scenes of dead people all over the world as Marlene Dietrich's 1960s cover of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" plays in the background.

Screenwriter Will Tracy recalls hearing that tune as part of a playlist Lanthimos had going on the set, and at the time, the director wanted to "see how it feels," Lanthimos says. "Everyone kind of felt that it was right."

Lanthimos hopes the visual aspect of humanity's end combined with the emotional underpinnings of the song inspires audiences to figure out their own interpretations of the stark ending.

"Like if they feel hopeful at the end or sad or hopeless or whatever, I think there's room for everyone to decide for themselves or leave with a certain kind of feeling," Lanthimos says. "And then think about it again and maybe find some hope if they didn't originally."

After a record-winning Emmy's sweep, *Schitt's Creek* still had one big to-do on its checklist: drop the final season on Netflix, where many of the show's fans had first discovered the Pop TV/CBC comedy.

That treat came a bit early, but for everyone watching the sixth season for the first (or tenth) time, we have an extra reward for you: co-creator and star Dan Levy (who plays David) returned to *EW's BINGE* podcast for a special bonus episode. Levy breaks down the biggest controversies of the season, shares a poignant memory from Emmy's night about co-star Annie Murphy (Alexis), reveals that an alternate ending of the series was shot, and speculates what David and Patrick (played by Noah Reid) would dress up as for Halloween.

We also revisit some of our favorite interviews from the *EW On Set* podcast, which had weekly companion episodes for every week of season six's original airing, including a never-before-heard riff by Catherine O'Hara (Moira) about a viral video she was obsessed with, extended and uncut interviews with Murphy and Dustin Milligan (Ted) about their characters' long-distance struggle, and Eugene Levy (Johnny) and special guest star Victor Garber (who steps in for one episode as Moira's former soap opera nemesis) talk about first meeting during a 1972 production of *Godspell* in Toronto. Plus, we assemble all of our favorite celebrity name drops from throughout the season, and the best Moira-isms.
