Tottenham's Premier League position is damning and so are the numbers

Tottenham's position in the Premier League is increasingly concerning. So are the numbers.

Spain Champions League Soccer

Check out these stats:

— Six straight losses in all competitions. That's never happened in the club's nearly 144-year history.

— Eleven matches without a win in the Premier League. That's a first at Tottenham, too.

— Four losses in Igor Tudor's first four games in interim control. This has never happened to a Tottenham manager.

It feels like things can hardly get any worse at Spurs, who — let's not forget — won the Europa League last season and were one of the 12 founding members of the ambitious but flawed Super League project that wasquickly abortedin 2021.

But, rest assured, it can get worse.

Still reeling from a calamitous 5-2 loss in the Champions League at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, Tottenham must travel to Anfield for a league match against Liverpool on Sunday with its squad ripped apart because of a mixture of injuries, suspensions, potential concussion issues and a general lack of belief.

The 30th round begins with Spurs — an ever-present in the top flight since the 1970s — two places and one point above the relegation zone with nine games left. By kickoff at Anfield, they could be in it.

Third-to-last West Ham and fourth-to-last Nottingham Forest are both a point behind Tottenham going into home games against Manchester City on Saturday and Fulham on Sunday, respectively. Liverpool-Tottenham is the last game on Sunday.

Key players like James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur and Destiny Udogie remain on the injured list, while captain Cristian Romero and midfielder Joao Palhinha might miss this weekend after being shaken following a clash of heads late in the game against Atletico. Key defender Micky van de Ven is suspended.

Then there's the goalkeeper situation. Guglielmo Vicario's form was so poor that Tudor felt it necessary to drop him against Atletico and hand a first start since October to Antonin Kinsky. The 22-year-old Czech didn't even last 17 minutes before beinghauled offbecause of an error-strewn display.

It means Vicario is likely to regain his starting place but his confidence can't be high, either.

Despite coming under heavy pressure, Tudor appears likely to be in charge this weekend. Tottenham confirmed midweek that the Croatian will conduct a news conference on Friday ahead of the Liverpool game. Then the second leg against Atletico is on Wednesday.

After that, Tottenham's sole focus might just be avoiding relegation.

Key matchups

Arsenal and Man City play on the same day in the latest chapter of the title race.

Holding a seven-point lead, Arsenal is at home to Everton. City plays a few hours later at the Olympic Stadium.

Manchester United and Aston Villa are level on points — in third and fourth place, respectively — ahead of their meeting at Old Trafford.

Players to watch

With the 30th round coming in the middle of a tight turnaround in the Champions League round of 16, expect to see some rotation among the top teams.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola might want to keep Antoine Semenyo in his team, though, with the Ghana international having scored seven goals in 13 games since his January arrival from Bournemouth.

Chelsea striker Joao Pedro has eight goals in his last eight games heading into a home match against Newcastle on Saturday.

Out of action

Liverpool has its own injury concerns for the visit of toiling Tottenham: Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker didn't travel to Turkey for the 1-0 midweek loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League because of an undisclosed problem.

Arsenal is set to again be without midfielder and captain Martin Odegaard, who is nursing a knee injury.

McGinn was absent for seven weeks since a knee injury in a Premier League loss to Everton in January.

"It's massive to have him back," teammate Morgan Rogers said. "He puts a smile on people's faces, he plays with that smile, wears the badge on his sleeve and he brings a lot to our team."

Villa and Lille also met in the Conference League quarterfinals two years ago, when Unai Emery's men advanced on penalties.

Another English side, Nottingham Forest, needs to put relegation worries aside when it hosts Danish club Midtjylland.

In an all-Italia derby, Bologna hosts Roma.

The Europa League format launched last season — 36 teams in a single-standings league format then a tennis-style knockout bracket — lets teams from the same country meet at any point in the knockout phase. Previously, national derbies were possible only from the quarterfinals.

Celta Vigo hosts the first leg against Lyon, the league phase winner.

Real Betis travels to Panathinaikos while Stuttgart meets Porto at home. Another Bundesliga club, Freiburg, is away to Genk.

In the Conference League, Crystal Palace faces AEK Larnaca in London.

Wisconsin, in familiar No. 5 Big Ten seed, seeks rerun vs. Washington

Wisconsin was the fifth seed in the Big Ten tournament in each of the past two seasons, and it reached the title game both times.

Field Level Media

The 23rd-ranked Badgers (22-9) will look to make it three in a row out of the No. 5 post as they open tournament play with a third-round matchup against 12th-seeded Washington (16-16) on Thursday afternoon.

The Huskies advanced with an 83-79 overtime victory against 13th-seeded Southern California on Wednesday. Zoom Diallo led the way with 22 points and 11 assists, Wesley Yates III and Quimari Peterson each scored 15 points and Hannes Steinbach added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Washington, which rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half.

"When we get down, this is a high character team," Washington coach Danny Sprinkle told Peacock after the game. "Adversity hasn't defined us all year. We've had guys quit. We've had guys get injured, and these guys keep battling."

The Huskies fell behind by three points early in the extra session, but a 7-0 run capped by a 3-pointer from Peterson put Washington on top 80-76 with 59 seconds left. Diallo went 2 of 2 at the line in the final seconds and Steinbach made 1 of 2 to seal the victory.

"Zoom was terrific," Sprinkle said. "Playing with four fouls the last 12:30 of the second half. I think he had a double-double that second half. It was tremendous. Everybody stepped up. ...

"It came down to getting stops and guarding without fouling in that last five minutes of regulation, really eight minutes of regulation, and then overtime. Just kept finding a way to win."

The Badgers defeated the Huskies 90-73 on Feb. 28 in Seattle as Braeden Carrington came off the bench to score a career-high 32 points, making a school-record nine 3-pointers.

"We don't need them to make (17) threes like they did in the first meeting," Sprinkle said. "We didn't play with any force that game. Give Wisconsin credit. They played great, but hopefully we play with a lot more energy (Thursday)."

Badgers coach Greg Gard and his staff had to prepare for multiple potential quarterfinal opponents.

"They've all put their heads together to continue to come to me with how we want to adjust game plans from player to player and game to game," Gard said of his assistant coaches. "It took a little while for us to kind of get it up and really rolling in the right direction, but I think it's made us much more efficient, much more effective."

All-Big Ten second-team selection Nick Boyd leads the Badgers with averages of 20.1 points and 4.0 assists per game. John Blackwell, chosen to the All-Big Ten third team, puts up 18.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

"They've got two of the best guards in the league, and they're going to be coming with a chip on their shoulder because they both could have easily been first-team all-league," Sprinkle said of Boyd and Blackwell."

Gina Gershon opens up about why she couldn't watch

Gina Gershonhas complicated feelings aboutShowgirls.

Entertainment Weekly Gina Gershon in 'Showgirls'Credit: MGM

In an appearance onThe Julia Cunningham Show, Gershon revealed that she couldn't watch the cult favorite "for years" because of how difficult it was to work on. She shared that she "thought it was going to be a different movie than it was," leading to multiple disagreements with directorPaul Verhoevanduring filming.

"I would get very tense and anxious when I thought about certain things and and stories," Gershon said.

'Showgirls' director Paul Verhoeven in 2021Credit: Daniele Venturelli/WireImage

Gershon said she had "a little bit of PTSD" from playing Cristal Connors, the star of a topless dance revue in Las Vegas and rival to aspiring dancer Nomi (Elizabeth Berkley). She recalled arguing with Verhoeven over her character's accent, the direction of the film, andthe inclusion of the gruesome rape scene.

"I wanted to have 'accent, accent,' and then when you see her backstage, she has no accent," Gershon said, referring to Cristal's exaggerated country twang. "She like talks, she's like a Jersey girl or something. Everything fake. I wanted every single thing fake."

She also shared that she was "so offended" by the brutal sexual assault scene involving kindhearted seamstress Molly (Gina Ravera). Gershon said that she advocated for having it taken out ahead ofShowgirls' release. However, three decades later, she said she now understands its inclusion.

"It is really a comment on like ugly America, and on capitalism and power struggles and dynamics and all those things, that of course that rape scene has to be there," she said. "It's the grossest thing in there — and the powerful men, they're all protected."

Gershon said she was "in survival mode" while shootingShowgirlsbecause she was afraid it would end her career if her performance was lacking. While the film was panned upon release, it has since experienced a cultural reappraisal, garnering homages from the likes ofAriana Grande.

Now that she understands the message inShowgirls, Gershon has a better appreciation for it. But she told Cunningham she would've liked Verhoeven to be more communicative about his vision for the movie.

"I wish he had just clued me in saying 'This is why this is there,'" she said.

Despite the fact that the film was not what she expected, Gershon said it was a good learning experience that taught her to be adaptable.

"I just changed my approach to the whole character," she said. "So that was kind of interesting. It was a good lesson."

The Thailand-flagged cargo ship Mayuree Naree engulfed in black smoke in the Strait of Hormuz

DUBAI/BASRA, Iraq, March 11 (Reuters) - Explosive-laden Iranian boats appear to have attacked two fuel tankers in Iraqi waters, setting them ablaze and killing one crew member on Wednesday, after projectiles struck four vessels in Gulf waters, said port, maritime security and risk firms.

The latest attacks on ships linked to the U.S. and Europe mark an escalation in the conflict between Iran and U.S.-Israeli ‌forces, raising the number of ships struck in the region since fighting began to at least 16.

Shipping in the Gulf and along the narrow Strait of Hormuz, which carries around a fifth of the world's oil, has come ‌to a near-standstill since the U.S. and Israel began strikes on Iran on February 28, sending global oil prices surging to highs not seen since 2022. [O/R]

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have said that if attacks on Iran continued, they would not allow "one litre of oil" to be shipped from the Middle East to the U.S., Israel or their partners.

Trump warned Washington would strike Iran harder if it blocked oil exports, and said oil companies should use the strait because "just about all of (Iran's) navy is gone."

The vessels targeted in Wednesday's late-night attacks in the Gulf near Iraq were the Marshall Islands-flagged Safesea Vishnu and the Malta-flagged Zefyros, which had loaded fuel cargoes in Iraq, two Iraqi port officials said.

Iraq's State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO) said the Safesea Vishnu was chartered by an Iraqi company contracted with SOMO, and that Zefyros was loaded with condensate products from Basra Gas Company. Both were attacked in the ship-to-ship loading area within Iraqi territorial waters, SOMO said.

IRAQI OIL PORTS CLOSED

Iraq's oil ports have completely stopped operations following the assaults, while commercial ports continue to function, Iraq's state news agency said, citing the ‌head of the state-run General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI).

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the crew of one ship had been evacuated and were reported safe.

"A boat belonging to the Iraqi Ports Company rescued 25 crew members from the two vessels, and the fires are still burning on both ships," Farhan al-Fartousi, GCPI's director general, told Reuters.

Iraqi rescue teams continue searching for other seafarers.

"We recovered the body of a foreign crew member from the water," one port security official said.

The Safesea Vishnu's commercial operator and beneficial operator are Safesea Transport Group and Safesea Group, respectively, according to data from Lloyd's List Intelligence.

Those U.S.-based companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

One Iraqi port security source said Zefyros is flagged in Malta and provided Reuters with a list of crew names.

Lloyd's List Intelligence data showed UK-based Cygnus Tankers Limited as the commercial operator and the George & Vassilis Michael family group of companies, a key player in Greek shipping, as the beneficial owner of a tanker matching that name and flag registry.

REVOLUTIONARY GUARDS HAVE SAID SHIPS WILL BE TARGETED

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have repeatedly warned that any ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz will be ‌targeted.

Two projectiles of unknown origin struck the Thai-flagged Mayuree Naree dry bulk vessel as it sailed through the strait earlier on Wednesday, causing a fire and damaging the engine room, the ship's Thai-listed operator Precious Shipping said in a statement.

"Three crew members are reported missing and believed to be trapped in the engine room," Precious Shipping said.

"The company is working with the relevant authorities to rescue these three missing crew members," it said, adding that the remaining 20 crew members had been safely evacuated and were ashore in Oman.

Images provided by the Thai navy showed smoke pouring out of the back of the ship.

Iran's Guards said in a statement carried by the Tasnim news agency that the ship was "fired upon by Iranian fighters", suggesting the first direct engagement by the Guards who have previously fired missiles or drones.

The U.S. Navy has refused near-daily requests from the shipping industry for military escorts through the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the war on Iran, saying the risk of attacks is too ‌high for now, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Trump has said the U.S. is prepared to provide naval escorts whenever needed.

THREE OTHER SHIPS SUSTAIN MINOR DAMAGE

The Japan-flagged container ship ONE Majesty also sustained minor damage on Wednesday from an unknown projectile 25 nautical miles (46 km) northwest of Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates, two maritime security firms said.

Its Japanese owner Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and a spokesperson for Ocean Network Express, its charterer, said the vessel was struck while at anchor in the Gulf and an inspection of the hull revealed minor damage above the waterline.

All crew are safe, ‌they said, adding that the vessel remains fully operational and seaworthy. The owner said the cause of the incident remained unclear and was under investigation.

A third vessel, a bulk carrier, was also hit by an unknown projectile approximately 50 nautical miles (92.6 km) northwest of Dubai, maritime security firms said.

The projectile had damaged the hull of the Marshall Islands-flagged Star Gwyneth, maritime risk management company Vanguard said, adding that the vessel's crew were safe. Owner Star Bulk Carriers said the ship was hit in the hold area whilst anchored. There were no crew injuries and no listing.

Early on Thursday, UKMTO said an unidentified projectile struck a container ship, causing a small fire, 35 nautical miles north of Jebel Ali ‌in the UAE. The crew were reported safe.

The Guards' statement included a reference to another ship, which it said was hit by projectiles - usually a reference to drones - on Wednesday morning. Reuters was not immediately able to confirm that report.
