Injury to insult: Tigers' Kerry Carpenter hurt on misplay that led to Bobby Witt Jr. inside-the-park-homer

Kerry Carpenter gave Bobby Witt Jr. an opening and the Kansas City Royals’ All-Star shortstop seized it, jetting around the bases for an inside-the-park home runin a 5-1 winover the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

Yahoo Sports

The play occurred in the first inning when Witt sliced an inside fastball from Tigers starter Burch Smith down the right-field line. Carpenter had a long way to run from right-center field to field the ball. But upon getting to the corner, the outfielder collided with the wall in foul territory and the ball caromed away from him.

Carpenter took approximately four seconds to get to the ball, which rolled over to the outfield warning track. That gave Witt the opportunity to sprint for more than a triple. By the time he threw the ball to the infield, Witt had already rounded third base and was on his way to score.

The Royals shortstop easily beat the relay throw, sliding into home head-first for a two-run, inside-the park homer that also scored Maikel Garcia for a 2-0 lead.

Again, those four seconds during which Carpenter chased down the carom were crucial because Witt only needed 14.13 seconds to dash from the batter’s box around the bases back to home plate.

That was the fourth-fastest trip around the bases for an inside-the-park homer since Statcast began tracking runners in 2015. Only the Minnesota Twins’ Byron Buxton and Chicago Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong rushed around the diamond faster.

Here is how that list currently looks:

Byron Buxton: 13.85 seconds - Aug. 18, 2017Byron Buxton: 14.05 seconds - Oct. 2, 2016Pete Crow-Armstrong: 14.08 seconds - Aug. 23, 2024Bobby Witt Jr. - 14.13 seconds - May 9, 2026

Witt also ran around the bases in 14.29 seconds for an inside-the-park home run on Aug. 14, 2023, giving him two of the seven-fastest sprints from home to home during the Statcast era, according to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs.

It was the second dash around the bases for a ball in play in consecutive nights, followingJJ Wetherholt’s Little League grand slaminFriday’s 6-0 winover the San Diego Padres. However, Wetherholt was aided by a far more egregious misplay than Carpenter’s with Fernando Tatis Jr. letting the ball roll under his glove for an error as he attempted to field it.

Kerry Carpenter fought the wall, and the wall won

An unfortunate footnote to Witt’s 14-second dash, especially for the Tigers, is that Carpenter hurt his left shoulder while collding with the wall in foul territory. He initially stayed in the game, batting in the second inning and hitting an infield single. He also returned to right field to play the bottom of the frame.

However, Carpenter left the game in the third inning with Wenceel Pérez taking over in right field. The Tigers soon announcedthat Carpenter was being evaluated for left shoulder soreness and no update was provided afterwards.

Carpenter started the season slowly, batting .208/,293/.446, though he’s tied for the team lead with six home runs in addition to 17 RBI.

If an injured list stint is imminent, he’ll join Javier Baez and Parker Meadows among Detroit’s everyday players. The Tigersalso have Tarik Skubal, Justin Verlander, Casey Mize, Will Mize and Troy Helton among 12 players currently sidelined.

The Tigers (18-22) have lost five consecutive games and eight of their past 11, allowing the Royals (19-21) to jump ahead of themfor second place in the AL Central.

The U.S. government released UFO files. Here's how you can see them

President Donald Trump's administration on Friday, May 8, released a trove of documents and photos related to phenomena known as UFOs through a publicly accessible website.

USA TODAY

The release comes after President Trumppreviously signaledthat he had tasked Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth and other government officials to make public "government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs)."

"Based on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters. GOD BLESS AMERICA!" Trumpsaid on Truth Social in February.

The Pentagon released the files May 8 on its new website,war.gov/UFO. The site also includes a link to additional UFO material athttps://www.aaro.mil/, where unidentified phenomena are referred to as UAPs.

The war.gov/UFO website includes documents and other data listed by agency, location, date and other identifying information. Each listing is clickable and reveals details on the report.

Hegseth said in a statement on the May 8 news release that the Pentagon was "in lockstep" with Trump, "to bring unprecedented transparency regarding our government’s understanding of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena."

Among the reports and recordings were 1972 recordings from Apollo 17 astronauts who said they saw strange lights and other sights during their trip to the moon and back.

What did Apollo 17 astronauts report in space?

The Apollo 17 astronauts were thelast humans to set foot on the moon, and the three crew members reportedvery interesting sights during the mission.

While scouring the lunar surface for intriguing rock samples in 1972 to take back to Earth, the astronauts also reported witnessing mysterious phenomenon inspace, including flashing lights that one crew member said lit up the sky “like the Fourth of July.”

The revelation was included in atrove of new files the government releasedFriday, May 8 related to reports of UFOs, which are now more officially referred to as the less stigmatized "unidentified anomalous phenomena." The release marks the latest chapter amid a resurgentpublic interest in UFOs, which has been spurred by a number ofhigh-profile Congressional hearingsin recent yearson the topic.

What was NASA's Apollo 17 moon mission?

TheApollo 17mission in 1972 was NASA's ninth and final crewed U.S. mission to the moon under the iconic program.

The Apollo 17 astronauts were largely tasked with collecting lunar regolith samples, but the crew also apparently witnessed a number of strange sightings above the lunar surface.

New documents released by the Pentagon reveal that the Apollo 17 astronauts reported observing unidentified phenomenon during three consecutive days of their mission. Atranscript of communicationsreleased in the disclosure detail the crew members' exchanges with the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

On the first day of operations, crew member Ronald Evans reported observing “very bright particles or fragments” drifting and “tumbling” nearby. Harrison Schmitt, the lunar module pilot, further described the phenomenon as looking “like the Fourth of July.”

The next day, commander Eugene Cernan reported spotting “some sets of the streaks" accompanied by an intense light flashing between his eyes, which he compared to a train headlight. Within the next three hours, Cernan said he observed more flashing, as well as a rotating phenomenon that he said seemed to correspond to objects in space.

On day three, Schmitt exclaimed that he had observed a flash on the lunar surface north ofGrimaldi(crater).

To explain some of phenomena they observed, the astronauts assumed the source could have been separated stages of the Saturn V rocket thatpropelled them to the moon.

Pentagon to investigate photo from Apollo 17

Archival imagery from the Apollo 17 mission to the moon shows three lights visible above the lunar terrain, highlighted in a box and enlarged from the original photo.

The Pentagon also included a previously-released photo that shows three bright lights visible in a triangle formation above the lunar terrain that it said is now under investigation.

"There is no consensus about the nature of the anomaly," the Pentagon said in the disclosure files. "New preliminary US government analysis suggests the image feature is potentially the result of a physical object in the scene."

Other NASA missions, including Gemini VII, also included in UFO files

Apollo 17 is apparently far from the only NASA mission during which unidentified objects were observed in space.

Included in Pentagon's first release are files from Apollo 11 and 12, as well as Gemini VII andSkylab, an orbital outpost that was a predecessor to theInternational Space Station.

The Earth-orbiting Gemini VII mission in 1965 was NASA's 10th-ever crewed spaceflight. Here's what was said in a transcript of communications shared in thenewly-released filesduring the mission between crew membersJim Lovelland Frank Borman with what's now known as the Johnson Space Center in Houston:

  • Borman reported sighting a "bogey" – referring to an unknown aircraft – and a debris field.

  • Lovell described observing a “brilliant body in the sun against a black background with trillions of particles on it.”

  • An attached document also includes handwritten notes detailing the encounter, annotated with the phrase “UFO Sighting by Borman."

Apollo 11, 12 astronauts witnessed unidentified phenomenon, Pentagon report states

Apollo 11 made history in 1969 as the first mission to successfully land astronauts on the moon. But areleased debriefingdated July 31, 1969 suggests the crew may have also witnessed three UFO sightings.

The observations highlighted in the document – all made during the crew's return trip to Earth – include an object on the way toward the moon that the astronauts speculated may have been the Saturn V launch vehicle. The astronauts also witnessed two, flashes of light inside the crew cabin, and a sighting of a bright light tentatively assumed to be a laser.

During Apollo 12 in 1969 – the fourth crewed mission under the program and the second to land astronauts on the moon – astronauts twice reported observing unidentified phenomenon above the surface, according to thefiles.

Here's what was said in excerpts from the Apollo 12 "technical air-to-ground voice transcriptions," based on the files:

  • On day 5, Alan Bean, the pilot of the lunar module, described observing particles and flashes of light “sailing off in space” that he characterized as “escaping the moon.”

  • On day 6, Mission Commander Charles “Pete” Conrad described observing floating debris outside the lunar module, which had been illuminated by the module’s onboard tracking light.

Do the files include Michigan sightings?

The reports released on Friday don't appear to includeMichigan-specific UFO information.

The National UFO Reporting Center, based in Davenport, Washington, includes dozens of reports on UFO or UAP activity in Michigan, including 15 in 2026.

The most recent UFO report from Michigan, reported onMay 2,says an individual near Reed City saw a very bright light "higher than a plane should be" that lasted for about 5 minutes.

"The object entered my frame of vision heading southeast in a sort of squiggle line fashion is the best way to explain it. It was almost like it wanted to look like a satellite but it couldn’t maintain a steady speed or course of direction. Speeding up and slowing down as it almost looked like a drunk driver swerving across the sky for a lack of better terms," the report said.

A differentreport from April 24,near Bridgeport, said an individual saw a "large Ferris wheel" object in the sky that followed them and hovered over their driveway before it "shot off."

The report included two blurry photos.

For Packers and Luke Combs, historic Lambeau shows are 'bucket list'

Luke Combs will roll intoLambeau Fieldthis week as one of Time magazine’s100 most influential people of 2026, the first country artist to have two songs surpass 1 billion streams on Spotify and a two-time Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year.

USA TODAY

That the home of theGreen Bay Packersis even on his radar is flattering in itself, but the chance to get to play there meant so much to the superstar that he went next level to help make it happen.

“Luke changed his stage to play here,” said Gabrielle Dow, Packers vice president of marketing and fan engagement.

The 36-year-old North Carolina native will make Lambeau Field history May 15 and 16 when he becomes thefirst act to play back-to-back nightsat the stadium withhis My Kinda Saturday Night Tour. It’s only the fifth major tour to ever play Lambeau and thefirst in seven years.

The seven previous stops on the stadium tour – all at college football stadiums, except for the Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium – have featured a massive in-the-round stage in the center of the field. The Packers, however, require an end zone stage to better preserve the field and the growth of the grass.

“So he went out and created an end zone stage to play here,” Dow said. “That’s really special and unique.”

Luke Combs' April 25 concert at the Ohio Stadium drew 97,367 fans, marking the largest single-night concert attendance at the stadium.

It was Combs who first contacted the Packers about playing Lambeau, Dow said. They had several conversations about why he wanted to perform there.

“He’s kind of fulfilling his bucket list,” she said. “He wants to play Lambeau Field. That is something he talks about.”

But for an artist to add their name to the short list of headliners who have played under the stars at Lambeau – Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and Kenny Chesney (twice) – it's not as simple as just the desire to do it. The mystique that sets Lambeau apart as a football venue is also at play when it comes to selecting touring acts.

More:Going to Luke Combs at Lambeau Field? Everything you'll want to know

“We’re very particular about who is performing in this building, and you had better be able to sell out and fill our stadium. That’s one reason. Secondly, is the act iconic enough to play here as well?” Dow said.

“We get solicited and offered up to host tons of different events but ... we kind of look at that and go, ‘OK, is this somebody who should be part of our brand? That would sell out the building? That is historical enough to play at Lambeau?’”

The aim is for Lambeau Field to be regarded as a bucket list venue for artists, Dow said.

After playing back-to-back shows at the Resch Center in 2022, Luke Combs is making the leap to back-to-back nights May 15 and 16 at Lambeau Field for his My Kinda Saturday Night Tour.

Hosting NFL draft was good test run for back-to-back concerts

Megan Roberson, manager of booking and event operations for the Packers, caught the My Kinda Saturday Night Tour April 25 at Ohio Stadium in Columbus to help get a better understanding of operations and security to ensure the Packers put their best foot forward when they host. The concert was outstanding, she said, and she thinks Combs is a perfect fit for Lambeau.

“He’s such a good human and really prides himself on his values and being a family man and is really proud of his wife and his children, and I think that really aligns with theGreen Bay Packerscommunity,” Roberson said. “Not only did he want to come for one night, he wanted to come for two nights.”

Dow said the Packers fan base gravitates toward good country music, as evidenced by game days and fan and season ticket holder surveys. Ticket sales are also routinely robust for country acts at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon, where Combsplayed back-to-back nights in 2022, Milwaukee’sSummerfestand at country festivals in the state.

The first of 20 to 25 trucks with the tour are expected to arrive at Lambeau Field the morning of May 11 to start the load-in process.

Having the stage in the end zone allows the track to be used for part of it, rather than having it on the 50-yard line, right in the bull's-eye of where much of the game is played, Dow said. A special flooring will be put down to protect the field.

Hosting back-to-back concert nights is new for the Packers, who typically have a week between home games to get the stadium ready for the next crowd. But Dow said hosting 200,000 people a day across three days of the2025 NFL draftwas a great test run.

“The draft was like a concert, times 20,” Dow said.

Once concertgoers are out of the stadium after the show ends at 11 p.m. Friday, cleaning crews will begin work on turning everything around in time for the parking lots to open at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

The Packers are hoping for more than 40,000 people Friday, which was added after the original Saturday date was announced, and what likely will be a sellout crowd of 55,000-plus on the second night, Roberson said.

She expects those going Friday to take the afternoon off from work to tailgate before music starts at 5:20 p.m. The lineup of guest acts (in order) both nights is Thelma & James, Jake Worthington, Ty Myers and Dierks Bentley.

On Saturday afternoon, the Combs team is hosting the Whiskey Jam Tailgate from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in theTitletown district. It will feature music byHarper GraceandAniston Pate, vendors and photo opportunities. Roberson anticipates it will be a big draw.

She expects the tailgating scene both days to have all the energy and excitement of a Packers game day but just look a little different.

“Forego the jerseys for your cowboy hats and cowboy boots,” she said.

The Packers are excited to welcome fans who perhaps have never been to the stadium before, Dow said. Concert crowds are sure to be in for some "Beautiful Crazy" goose bump moments that only Lambeau Field can deliver.McCartney’s performanceof “Live and Let Die" and its barrage of pyro and fireworks in 2019 comes to mind for her.

"It’s electrifying," she said. "I think when you have those memorable moments and those once-in-a-lifetime moments of seeing your favorite artist, on someone’s bucket list, at Lambeau, in an iconic stadium, it’s kind of a surreal experience.”

So what might the Packers have up their sleeve to welcome Combs, a dad of three young boys, Tex, Beau and Chet, to their home? That’s top secret for now, but if you’re thinking a custom jersey with his name on the back, you might what to think again.

“We have something more unique,” Dow said. “We’ve done our homework. I think we even have something for his kids ... It will not be like any other team or venue.”

Kelly (2-3) allowed a run on three hits and Paul Sewald worked a perfect ninth for his eighth save in as many chances. It was Arizona's third win in 11 games.

Mets starter Clay Holmes (4-3) allowed a two-run single to Ildemaro Vargas in the third inning, but was otherwise sharp, allowing two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

He got little help from the Mets' offense. New York had three hits a night after pulling outa 3-1 winin 10 innings over the Diamondbacks.

Kelly was much better after allowing 19 earned runs over 13 2/3 innings his previous three starts.

The right-hander allowed Brett Baty's run-scoring single in the second inning and stranded two in the fifth after Tyrone Taylor's two-out double. Kelly struck out six and walked three.

Arizona's starters have pitched at least six innings in five straight starts for the first time since doing it in six straight last September.

Holmes held the Angels to an earned run in 6 2/3 innings his last start and was sharp again.

The right-hander worked around Adrian Del Castillo's leadoff double in the second inning before running into trouble when Arizona loaded the bases in the third. Vargas lined a two-run single, but Holmes retired the next nine batters until being lifted following Nolan Arenado's two-out single in the sixth.

Holmes had six strikeouts and two walks. He's allowed two or fewer earned runs in all eight starts this season.
