Trump to roll back Biden-era refrigerant rules in push to lower grocery costs

WASHINGTON —President Donald Trumpis set to announce the overhaul of two Biden-era Environmental Protection Agency rules for refrigerants in a push tolower grocery costsfor consumers, according to an administration official.

USA TODAY

One action will extend deadlines for groceries and other companies to phase out the use of climate-damaging hydrofluorocarbonsfor refrigeration under the 2023 Technology Transitions Rule.

The move is expected to make more refrigerants ‒ used in freezers, refrigerators and air-conditioning systems ‒ available for supermarkets, homeowners and other businesses, which the White House estimates will produce $900 million in savings, including $800 million at groceries.

The EPA is also proposing to amend the2024 Emissions Reduction and Reclamation programto exempt all road refrigerant appliances used to transport goods from new leak requirements for hydrofluorocarbons. The White House projects an additional $1.5 billion in savings from this change.

President Donald Trump makes an announcement, joined by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin, at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., February 12, 2026.

Trump is scheduled to announce the EPA changes at an Oval Office event Thursday morning, with executives from Kroger, Piggly Wiggly Fareway Stores and other grocery chains on hand.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, in a statement, said the refrigerant rules adopted by the Biden administration "didn’t protect human health or the environment and instead piled on costly, unattainable restrictions beyond what the law requires."

"Our actions allow businesses to choose the refrigeration systems that work best for them, saving them billions of dollars. This will be felt directly by American families in lower grocery prices," Zeldin said.

The Trump administration has repealed or overhauledan assortment of Biden and Obama-era environmental and climate rulesas part of an aggressive deregulation agenda.

The latest move comes as the Trump administration is working to highlight actions aimed at reducing costs for Americans amid surging inflation that poses a political liability for Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections.

The consumer price index surged 3.8% in April, the largest increase in inflation in three years, as a result of increasing oil costs stemming from the U.S. war in Iran.

Grocery prices were up 2.9% in April over the previous year after increasing 0.7% from the previous month.

The ‘silent’ American billionaire behind Arsenal’s once-in-a-generation win is also racking up NFL, NBA and NHL titles

Arsenal'sPremier League winwas the team’s first in 22 years — and it alsomarked the latest trophyfor American billionaire Stan Kroenke's international stable of sports teams.

The Independent US

Through his Denver-based Kroenke Sports & Entertainment holding company, the 78-year-old real estate mogul owns pro football, basketball, hockey, soccer and lacrosse franchises that have each racked up at least one championship since he bought them.

Arsenal's success came after Kroenke became a minority owner of the team in 2007, and steadily increased his share beforebuying outrival co-owner and Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov in a 2018 deal that ended a standoff between the tycoons and valued the team at about $2.3 billion.

The team’s victory led independent sports business writer Joe Pompliano to declare on X that as a sports investor, Kroenke "is on a generational run right now."

But the years leading up to Arsenal becoming champions of the Premier League were marked by intense anger from the Gunners’ fans toward Kroneke, including a protest outside the team’s Emirates Stadium in 2019 over complaints that he was treating Arsenal as an“investment vehicle.”

In 2021, an even larger rallyof more than 1,000 football fans gathered for a “Kroenke out” demonstration sparked by the owner’s role in failed efforts to create a European Super League.

Kroenke is the world's 114th richest person, with a personal fortune estimated at $22.2 billion, nearly triple his 2021 net worth of $8.2 billion, according toForbes.

Last year, he became America's largest landowner with the purchase of 937,000 acres of ranchland in New Mexico, bringing his total portfolio to an estimated 2.7 million acres, according to theLandReportwebsite. His Kroenke Vineyards also produce wines from two sprawling estates in California's Santa Barbara region.

Kroenke's wife, Ann Walton Kroenke, is also a billionaire in her own right as daughter of the late Walmart co-founder James "Bud" Walton, with a personal net worth of $15 billion, according toForbes.

On Wednesday night, another of Kroenke’s teams — the Colorado Avalanche, which won hockey’s Stanley Cup in 2001 and 2022 — is set to face off against the Las Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 of the NHL Central Division conference finals.

Kroenke has repeatedly faced protests from Arsenal fans who are seen here chanting and holding placards outside Emirates Stadium in London, England, on April 23, 2021 (Getty)

Kroenke bought the Avalanche in 2000 as part of a reported $450 million package deal for the Denver Nuggets and Denver's Pepsi Center, since renamed the Ball Arena.

Three years later, the Nuggets won the NBA championship.

Kroenke's Colorado Rapids soccer team also won the 2010 Major League Soccer Cup and his Colorado Mammoth won the National Lacrosse League championship in 2006 and 2022.

Although Kroenke maintains a generally low profile that'sled to the nickname"Silent Stan," the Missouri native is widely reviled in St. Louis, where he helped relocate the Los Angeles Rams football team in 1995.

The move came after Kroenke became a 40 percent co-owner of the Rams with socialite Georgia Frontiere, who inherited control of the team following the 1979 drowning of her sixth husband, former Baltimore Colts owner Carroll Rosenbloom.

The St. Louis Rams won the 2000 Super Bowl and Kroenke bought Frontiere's 60 percent majority share for $750 million following her 2008 death.

But Kroenke — who in 1993 had tried to bring a new expansion team to St. Louis, which lost the Cardinals to Arizona six years earlier —moved the Rams backto LA in 2016 after clashing with St. Louis officials over his demand for more than $700 million in upgrades to the city's Edward Jones Dome, since renamed The Dome at America's Center.

St. Louis fans were furious, with online headlines calling him “The Most Hated Man in Missouri” and saying, “F*** You, Stan Kroenke, and the Toupee You Rode in Under.” St. Louis native Andy Cohen giving him a double middle-finger salute on his Bravo! cable TV talk show.

It appears those feelings have yet to subside. YouTube’s STL Sport Central posting a 7-minutevideoin 2021 titled “Stan Kroenke is a Liar" that included a clip of him pledging, “We're here to work hard and be very successful in St. Louis,” as well as an unidentified man in a Veterans of Foreign Wars cap being asked what he’d say to Kroenke if given the chance.

“Bye. And don't let the door hit you in the butt,” he answered.

Last year,ESPNreported that many fans attending home-field games of the United Football League’s St. Louis Battlehawks wore T-shirts and waved homemade signs referencing the Rams owner.

“It's a community experience with a shared interest in spring football and a shared hatred of Stan Kroenke," said John Lewis.

During a 2016 interview for Southern California Public Radio'sTake Twoprogram, Kroenke defended his decision to move the Rams out of St. Louis, saying “there's the emotional argument and then there's rational. And rationally, unless you argue that you should make a massive donation just to support with, it doesn't make any sense.”

When asked if he regretted it, he replied: “Well, sure, but it’s emotional.”

Kroenke later built the $5.5 billion SoFi Stadium complex in Inglewood, California, on land that included 60 acres he quietly bought in a deal that became public in early 2014, during discussions over his proposed improvements to the St. Louis stadium.

In 2022, the Rams won the Super Bowl at SoFi, narrowly defeating the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20, in a come-from-behind victory late in the fourth quarter.

American former soccer player Tim Howard said Wednesday onSiriusXMthat Kroenke, his son and team co-owner Josh and manager Mikel Arteta all deserved credit for Arsenal coming out on top of the Premier League.

"I give the Kroenke family a lot of credit because it's in vogue to get rid of managers when you think you know better," he said.

"And the idea is to hire a really good manager and get the heck out of the way. And (Manchester) City have done that, Liverpool have done that and Arsenal have done that — and the others haven't."

Warriors mock draft roundup: Golden State eying Mexican prospect

Basketball experts are pinning down their mock selections over a month away from the 2026 NBA Draft on June 23-24.

USA TODAY

This draft class anticipates having among the best crop of talent to enter the league with players such as AJ Dybantsa, Cameron Boozer, Caleb Wilson and Darryn Peterson.

TheGolden State Warriorshave to decide whether to will draft a prospect or trade their No. 11 pick.

Despite being heavy buyers in the trade market, the consensus is that Golden State will retain their pick and lean into scouting for the right piece. Head coach Steve Kerr looks forward to that selection and believes developing that pick will be a "huge factor" in their 2026-27 season.

"I think we're in a different place now. Right, there's no question. And I've talked to Mike (Dunleavy, the Warriors GM), I mean, I don't know the draft, but he feels really strongly that we're going to get a good player. It could be a 19 year old, it could be someone older,"Kerr told reporters.

The Warriors have been linked to a number of players, such as Michigan forward Yaxel Lendeborg, Arizona guard Brayden Burries and Michigan center Aday Mara.

USA TODAY Sports' Bryan Kalbroskypredicts Karim López going to the Warriors as the first-ever Mexican-born NBA draft selection. Kalbrosky described Lopez as "physically gifted, athletic, and universally seen as the top prospect from this class currently playing overseas."

"He exploded for 32 points (11-of-13 FG) with eight rebounds, two blocks and one steal against Melbourne on Jan. 30. Despite his age, he played a huge role for his team defensively for a team that won the NBL Ignite Cup. López measured well, weighing just shy of 222 pounds and 38-inch max vertical," Kalbrosky wrote.

Whoever is brought in, Kerr emphasized the Warriors' commitment to that players' development.

"It's obvious where we are with the injuries toMoses (Moody) andJimmy (Butler), you look at our depth on the wings, that guy has to play, and he's got to earn it, you know, but we're committed to absolutely, you know, the development of our young players," Kerr said. "(We're) trying to do this thing in a way that allows for success down the road. Down the road meaning the end of next season and beyond, and we're excited about that."

Here are mock draft predictions from sports experts, specifically for theGolden State Warriors:

NEED TO KNOW

  • She wore a custom lace wedding dress by British designer Giles Deacon

  • Pippa's wedding look had a few similarities to her older sister Kate's Sarah Burton bridal gown

Pippa Middletonbecame theworld’s most famous bridesmaidafter her sisterKate Middleton’s 2011 nuptials, but it was her ownwedding dressin which she truly shone.

On May 20, 2017, Pippa walked down the aisle tomarryhusband James Matthewsin a bespoke silk cotton lace gown with a corseted bodice, cap sleeves, a high neckline and a heart-shaped keyhole back designed by Giles Deacon.

Pippa topped the look off with a Stephen Jones veil and a pair of ivory-and-pearl Manolo Blahnik pumps.

Ahead, everything to know about Pippa Middleton's wedding dress, including the unexpected accessory she recycled from her sister's royal wedding.

She chose a British designer

Pippa paid homage to her British roots by walking down the aisle in a stunning creation byBritish designer Giles Deacon. He launched his own label, GILES, in 2003 and earned a British Fashion Designer of the Year award in 2006.

Prior to designing Pippa’s 2017 gown, Deacon’s made his sartorial mark at the 2012 London Olympics, whenVictoria Beckhamperformed with the Spice Girls in his custom minidress with a dramatic train, and at the 2013 Met Gala, for whichSarah Jessica Parkersported one of his floral garments for the evening’s"PUNK: Chaos to Couture” theme.

Deacon expressed his delight at working on his most famous commission, sayingin a statement, "I was thrilled to work with Pippa on her dress.”

“She has a great eye,” he later toldBusiness of Fashionof Pippa, adding, “She knew whatshewanted.”

Pippa's dress featured hand-embroidered pearls and hidden seams

While Pippa’s gown appeared to have completely seamless stitching, Deacon toldBusiness of Fashionthere was actually a lot of behind-the-scenes work that went into hiding them — which is exactly what he was going for.

“I wanted that ‘’How-was-that-done?’ factor,” he told the publication.

As for how he accomplished the effect, Deacon revealed that Pippa’s silk cotton lace was “all hand-pieced.” Said Deacon: “[That’s] why you don’t actually see a seam.”

The designer’s team also hand-embroidered pearls along the neck, bodice and corset to emphasize its smooth lines.

Her dress was inspired in part by a 1960s movie

Deacon cited a scene in a 1963 Luchino Visconti film calledThe Leopardas inspiration for Pippa’s gown in a May 2017 interview withBusiness of Fashion.

“I always loved the dancing scenes inThe Leopard,” he said. “I know they were all hoop crinolines in the film, but there’s something gorgeous about having that great movement, with the skirt spinning round, keeping its shape.”

Pippa’s dress followed suit, with a tulle train at the back of the skirt that the designer said enabled it to float and pleats at the front that allowed it to move more freely. “There’s incredible movement,” Deacon explained to the publication.

The gown had similar elements to Kate’s

Pippa’s ivory wedding gown featured several elements that were similar to the ivorySarah Burton-designed dress Kate wore on her big day.

Both sisters chose a corseted bodice with a lace overlay, though their necklines differed quite a bit: Kate’s featured a deep, plunging V, while Pippa’s more modest mockneck was reminiscent ofGrace Kelly’s bridal look

The shape of their skirts was also nearly identical, with both Kate and Pippa opting for pleated A-line silhouettes.

Last but not least, both women covered their hair with long, intricate veils, though Kate’s was much longer than her younger sister’s, as was her gown, which featured a sprawling9-foot train.

Pippa previously wore her “something old” at Kate's royal wedding

If Pippa’s wedding earrings looked familiar, it’s because the British socialite wore them six years prior for theroyal wedding, effectively serving as her “something old.”

Commissioned from British jeweler Robinson Pelham by her mother and father for Kate’s nuptials, they featured a pear-cut diamond drop and a floral motif.

She wore a bespoke diamond headpiece

Robinson Pelham was also responsible for the understated tiara the bride wore atop her head.

Dubbed the Maidenhair Fern tiara, it was crafted with 18-karat white gold and diamonds, per company cofounder Zoe Benyon, who spoke toVogueabout the headpiece.

“It’s all about balance,” Benyon told the outlet in 2017. “You do not want the dress and tiara to fight, so one has to take a back seat.

Benyon also revealed that the tiara was tailored to Pippa’s face shape. As she explained: “Tiaras are like sunglasses; not every one suits every shape of face.”

  • “That was so mishandled,” Teller said of the viral piece, which “felt like such a violation of what actually transpired”

Miles Tellercame under some criticism in 2015.

In a new interview withIndieWire, Teller, 39, addressed an oldEsquireprofileabout the then-rising star, which concluded he was "kind of a dick.” Asked about having "to counteract some bad press" throughout his career, theMichaelstar brought up the old profile.

“That was so mishandled. The reason why I have not done profiles is because I said, ‘Wow, if I'm not doing this interview on camera, this person can misquote things or put things out of order or say things that didn't happen,' ” the actor said.

TheEsquirepiece “felt like such a violation of what actually transpired,” added Teller. “I told my team, ‘Guys, I don't think I'm doing this again, because I'm reading this and this doesn't sound like me to me.' ”

UK finance ministry presses supermarkets to cap food prices, sources say

(Corrects reference to finance ministry from foreign ministry in paragraph 6)

Reuters

LONDON, May 19 (Reuters) - Britain's finance ministry is pressuring major supermarket groups to introduce voluntary ‌price caps on key products, such as eggs, bread and milk, in ‌return for easing some regulations, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

Confirming a Financial Times report that the ministry had proposed relaxing some new packaging rules and possibly delaying changes to rules around healthy food in exchange for price caps, the people said the grocers had reacted with anger and were pushing back.

The proposals come as Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government seeks ‌to address an ongoing cost of living crisis and follow a similar move by the Scottish National Party, which holds power in Scotland's devolved parliament.

"If this happened, nobody would invest in the UK," one of the people said.

"If you want food price inflation to decline, you need to start looking at the cost of regulation on business," they said, highlighting the government's moves to raise employer taxes, the national minimum wage, introduce new packaging ‌levies and propose the reformulation of thousands of food lines.

A spokesperson for the British finance ministry said: "The chancellor (Rachel Reeves) has been clear we want to do more to help keep costs down for families, and will set out more detail in due course."

British grocery inflation was 3.8% in the four weeks to April 19, according to researcher Worldpanel by ‌Numerator.

The Bank of England said that businesses it had spoken to last month expected food price inflation to reach 6% to 7% later this year, reflecting the economic fallout from the Iran war.

The British ‌Retail Consortium, which represents Britain's major supermarket groups, including market leader Tesco and Sainsbury's, said it opposed price caps.

"Rather than introduce 1970s-style price controls and trying to force retailers to sell goods at a loss, the Government must focus on how it ‌will reduce the public policy costs which are pushing up food prices in the first place," BRC CEO Helen Dickinson said.
