If you grew up listening to Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, it probably doesn't take more than a few notes to send you straight back in time. But no matter how many covers you've heard over the years, chances are you've never heard one quite like this.

Outside the gates of Buckingham Palace, amid the formality of the Changing of the Guard, the Coldstream Guards broke tradition in a truly spectacular fashion.

The band played the unmistakable riff of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" for the crowd. Dressed in their signature red tunics and towering bearskin hats, the King's Guard delivered a jaw-dropping tribute to the late Prince of Darkness.

Listen to a clip in this TikTok video from July 30:

The moment, shared by @theprojecttv, came just days after Osbourne's death at age 76. The iconic rocker, whose legacy spans from the birth of heavy metal to the hit reality show The Osbournes, died on July 22.

The unexpected performance struck an emotional chord with fans around the world. Many applauded the powerful and respectable tribute, with some saying it was a unique blend of tradition and rock that Osbourne would have approved.

Osbourne's legacy will live on not only in his music but also in the hearts of fans who recognized a working-class hero who never stopped fighting. A new exhibit at the Birmingham Museum, Ozzy Osbourne (1948–2025): Working-Class Hero, now invites fans to pay tribute in person and leave messages in a growing book of condolences that will be available until Sunday, August 3.

In a world where royal bands typically stick to marches and classical themes, the King's Guard broke the mold, reminding us that true legends deserve unexpected honors.

WASHINGTON — One of Donald Trump's most visible and potentially enduring legacies as president could be the 90,000-square-foot ballroom that he is planning to build, replacing the East Wing edifice traditionally used for the first lady's offices.

The project, set to begin in September, looms as the biggest transformation of the White House complex since Harry Truman's day. Perhaps fitting for the onetime New York real estate developer who branded buildings worldwide with his name, Trump has taken to remaking the White House in accord with his tastes since beginning his second term.

The president told NBC News in an interview that the new ballroom will forgo the need to shuttle guests to tents pitched on the South Lawn for events that are too large for the White House to accommodate.

"When it rains or snows, it's a disaster," the president said over the phone, lamenting that tents are positioned "a football field away from the White House."

Trump said that some of the world's "finest architects" are involved, and a White House official added that Trump has viewed renderings of the ballroom. The work is expected to finish before the end of his term.

Trump estimated that taking down the East Wing and putting the ballroom in place would cost about $200 million. The East Wing was completed in 1942 under Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration, according to the White House Historical Association.

Trump said the project would be "his gift to the country," funded by himself and private donations.

Since returning to office, Trump has set about making an imprint on his White House surroundings. He told NBC News he is replacing what he described as a "terribly" remodeled bathroom in the Lincoln Bedroom with one that is truer to the style of the 16th president's era.

Elsewhere on the grounds, he has put in a pair of towering flag poles and paved over a grassy patch of the Rose Garden. Wet grass poses problems for women in high heels walking through the garden, he has said.

"I was always a great real estate developer, and I know how to do that," Trump said.

Partial to one precious metal in particular, Trump has added gold accents throughout the Oval Office.

"He has a vision to make the White House as exceptional and beautiful as possible for future presidents and administrations," the White House official said. "He is very hands-on and involved in all of this."

Trump checks in on construction workers on the White House grounds weekly and spends 20-30 minutes with them, asking questions, the same official said. He even invited some of those working on the Rose Garden project into the Oval Office recently.

Another White House official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, added: "The president is very directly involved, even more so than the first lady."

Much of Trump's aesthetic can be undone if a future president wishes. Every new president makes changes to the Oval Office décor. The Rose Garden paving can always be torn up and the grass restored. When Trump goes in 2029, the gold could follow.

"Whoever succeeds Trump, if they're not into gold, the gilding will start to come down," said Barbara Perry, a professor of presidential studies at the University of Virginia's Miller Center.

Yet the ballroom could stand for decades as Trump's creation, much as "the Truman Balcony" addition in 1948 is linked to Truman.

"I'm doing a lot of improvements," Trump said. "I'll be building a beautiful ballroom. They wanted it for many, many years."

The White House released new details about the ballroom on Thursday, after NBC's interview with the president and follow-up questions posed by the network. Trump had chosen McCrery Architects as the lead architect, according to the White House. And Trump has held meetings with White House staff members, the National Park Service and others in recent weeks.

Officials will meet with the "appropriate organizations" to keep intact the White House's "special history … while building a beautiful ballroom that can be enjoyed by future administrations and generations of Americans to come," Susie Wiles, White House chief of staff, said in a statement.

The private funding arrangement for the ballroom worries at least one congressman. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., a member of a House Appropriations panel that oversees the executive office of the presidency, said in an interview Thursday: "It appears that he's trying to do this perhaps with private donations, but that could be a little odd."

"Is this going to be a White House ballroom sponsored by Carl's Jr.?" Pocan asked rhetorically.

Given the magnitude of the project, Pocan said that the president should bring the plan before Congress for discussion.

"This is a major renovation and clearly should come before the committee," Pocan said. "This would fall under the definition of having proper oversight. It's a perfectly great conversation to have in a subcommittee meeting."

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer of New York, noted at a press briefing Thursday that Congress has not appropriated funding for the ballroom, saying: "Listen, I'm happy to eat my cheeseburger at my desk. I don't need a $200 million ballroom to eat it in. Okay?"

A common impression may be that the White House is a historic building frozen in amber, but it has been rebuilt, renewed and refreshed again and again since 1800, when John Adams became the first president to move in.

In most cases, presidents who undertook substantial renovations faced public blowback. In an essay posted on LinkedIn in June, Stewart McLaurin, president of the historical association, documented the fallout over the past two centuries to "give context and set precedent for more recent changes and adaptations."

With the building about to collapse on his head, then-President Truman carried out a complete gutting of the White House interior from 1948-52 to shore up the structure with steel beams and concrete.

"Preservationists mourned the loss of original interiors, while media outlets questioned the project's cost during post-war economic recovery," McLaurin wrote.

The East Wing, the space earmarked for the new ballroom, was itself targeted for criticism in Roosevelt's time.

"Congressional Republicans labeled the expenditure as wasteful, with some accusing Roosevelt of using the project to bolster his presidency's image," McLaurin wrote.

"However," he wrote, "the East Wing's utility in supporting the modern presidency eventually quieted critics."

At this early stage in the planning, the verdict on Trump's ballroom vision is mixed. Some White House alumni sympathized with Trump's wish to make the complex more comfortable for visitors who often include heads of state.

Anita McBride, who was chief of staff to first lady Laura Bush, said in an email to NBC News: "I think it's going to be an enhancement that will be welcomed by future occupants. No more big tents damaging the lawn or expensive build outs needed for major events. Clearly makes it easier to invite more people, too, when current state room capacity is limited."

Rufus Gifford, who was chief of protocol of the U.S. in the Biden administration, likened Trump's renovation to a renter overhauling an apartment. He shouldn't make such dramatic structural changes to the iconic building on his own, Gifford said.

"The American people are Trump's landlords right now," Gifford said.

Trump, the erstwhile builder, seems to be relishing the return to his roots. Discussing his penchant for choosing paintings to decorate the West Wing, he said: "To me, it's enjoyment; to other people, it's work."

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The suspected gunman who killed three people outside the largest casino in Reno, Nevada, before police officers shot and arrested him has died.

Dakota Hawver, a 26-year-old Reno resident, died in the overnight hours, police announced Thursday morning. Hawver had been hospitalized in critical condition since the shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort.

Two of the three people killed in Monday's shooting were visiting from Southern California for a bachelor party, while the third victim was a 66-year-old man who lived in the area, authorities said.

Investigators haven't found any connections between Hawver, the casino or the victims, according to police in the neighboring town of Sparks who are leading the investigation. They said the motive is still unknown.

Two other people wounded in the shooting remained hospitalized but were expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both 33 years old and from Southern California, were fatally shot from behind while waiting in the valet area for a ride to the airport, police said.

Reno resident Angel Martinez was shot and killed by the suspect as he drove through the parking lot. Police said the shooter had been hiding behind a parked vehicle.

Investigators determined the suspect fired around 80 rounds from a 9mm handgun that he had legally purchased two years ago. He has no criminal record and no history of mental health problems, officials have said.

The shooting unfolded early Monday, when the gunman walked up to the valet area, pulled out the gun and pointed it at a group of people, police said. His weapon initially malfunctioned, but he was quickly able to get it to shoot before running through the parking lot, where he encountered an armed casino security guard.

The gunman opened fire on the guard, who returned fire as the shooter fled again before being shot by police and taken into custody.

The Grand Sierra Resort is one of Reno's most prominent venues. It has hosted concerts, sporting events and a campaign rally by President Donald Trump before the 2024 election. Near the California border and just northeast of Lake Tahoe, the town is a popular summer tourist destination.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Thursday that a 35% tariff on all Canadian goods not covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement is still "surely in the cards," ahead of an Aug. 1 deadline imposed by President Donald Trump.

Lutnick said in an interview on Fox Business Network's "Kudlow" that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney could still convince Trump to back down.

"If he makes that call, and if he starts turning on the charm, and if he takes off his retaliation ... and stops the silliness, maybe the president will let it down a bit," Lutnick said. "But right now, 35%, that letter he sent, is surely in the cards."

Trump sent a letter to Carney in July saying the U.S. would impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods as of Aug. 1. The two sides have been working on negotiating a trade deal by that deadline, but Trump said last week they may not be able to reach a negotiated deal, suggesting the unilateral tariff rate could be imposed.

Earlier this week, Carney said talks were at an intense phase, while reiterating that a deal that would remove all U.S. tariffs was unlikely.

Ahead of his headlining set at Lollapalooza this weekend, country star Luke Combs took in the Chicago skyline this week from a very safe distance.

In a video shared by himself and the Skydeck at Willis Tower on Instagram, Combs visited the famous glass-floor observation boxes that stretch out 103 stories above downtown.

While his team stepped onto the platform without hesitation, the singer was unapologetically shaking in his boots.

"Here's the thing, I don't over promise," he said in the clip. "If I'm not gonna do something, I'll just tell you. Never one time when this has been brought up, never once have I been like, 'Oh, for sure I'm gonna do that.' Never one time. You know why? Because it's not gonna happen."

As his crew ventured onto the ledge, some even jumping for photos, Combs watched from a safer distance.

"I'm so excited to not go on that," he joked. "Dude, get a picture of me not going in it. I would much rather have an encounter with a grizzly bear."

The "Fast Car" singer even pitched his own souvenir idea: "I wish there was a sweatshirt that said, 'I bitched out of the Willis Tower.' I would for sure buy that."

Combs is headlining Lollapalooza on Thursday, but don't expect him to enjoy the view from 1,353 feet in the air.

Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor on Thursday lost his attempt to overturn a jury's order that he compensate a woman who accused him of raping her, with Ireland's Court of Appeal rejecting the appeal in its entirety.

The plaintiff, Nikita Hand, alleged that McGregor sexually assaulted her on December 9, 2018. A jury last year ordered McGregor to pay her nearly 250,000 euros ($285,250) in damages.

McGregor, 36, denied the allegation and said he had "fully consensual sex" with Hand. He also denied causing bruising to the plaintiff.

In the appeal heard earlier this month, lawyers for McGregor said the judge erred in directing the jury to decide whether he "assaulted" rather than "sexually assaulted" the victim.

Judge Brian O'Moore said on Thursday that the appeal court had no doubt the overall effect of the trial judge's charge was to tell them the central allegation by Hand against McGregor was that he had raped her.

McGregor's legal team had also argued that the judge should not have allowed a line of questioning during cross-examination regarding McGregor's "no comment" responses in a police interview. That ground was also rejected.

Hand embraced a number of people beside her after the appeal court ruling.

"To every survivor out there, I know how hard it is, but please don't be silenced. … You deserve to be heard, you also deserve justice. Today, I can finally move on and try to heal," Hand said in a statement outside the court.

Hand told the high court in November that she and a friend made contact with McGregor, whom she knew, after a work Christmas party. She said they were driven by McGregor to a party in a penthouse room of a Dublin hotel where drugs and alcohol were consumed.

She said McGregor, who was not in court on Thursday, took her to a bedroom in the penthouse and sexually assaulted her.

Hand's lawyer told the jury that when she was referred to a sexual assault treatment unit the day after the alleged assault, a doctor was so concerned that he directed that photographs be taken of her injuries.

KELLY MCCARTHYAugust 1, 2025 at 12:14 AM

Scottie Scheffler and Tom Brady are not in the same season of life, but the two athletic titans have clashing opinions on how they view the balancing act of parenting and professional sports.

Earlier this month, world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler made very clear where his priorities lie -- first as a family man for his wife and son, second as a professional golfer -- just days before winning his fourth major championship of his PGA career.

Why Scottie Scheffler says winning at golf is 'not a fulfilling life' ahead of British Open

In a July 15 press conference before the tournament began at Royal Portrush Golf Club, Scheffler delivered a deeply honest speech on success, sharing his poignant perspective that underscored the duality of motivation and fulfillment that he said is "something I wrestle with on a daily basis."

"At the end of the day it's like -- this is not a fulfilling life," Scheffler said at the time, referring to winning at golf. "And all of a sudden you get to No. 1 in the world, and you're like, 'What's the point? Why do I want to win this tournament so bad?' Because if I win -- it's going to be awesome for about two minutes."

Alex Pantling/R&A via Getty Images - PHOTO: Scottie Scheffler of the United States celebrates victory on 18th green with his son Bennett Scheffler, wife Meredith Scheffler at The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club on July 20, 2025, in Portrush, Northern Ireland.

In May, at just 29 years old, Scheffler, a two-time Masters champ in 2022 and 2024, won the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Golf & Country Club. After his July 15 press conference, he also secured his first Open Championship title at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Scheffler now only needs a U.S. Open win to complete the PGA career grand slam.

Speaking to that success, he told reporters, "If my golf ever started affecting my home life or it ever affected the relationship I have with my wife or with my son, that's gonna be the last day that I play out here for a living. This is not the be-all, end-all. This is not the most important thing in my life. And that's why I wrestle with, 'Why is this so important to me?' Because I would much rather be a great father than I would be a great golfer."

Brady, regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time with seven Super Bowl titles and countless stats in the football record books, had a few thoughts about Scheffler's comments, which he expanded on in his weekly newsletter, 199, on Tuesday.

Gisele Bundchen opens up about Tom Brady divorce, co-parenting and more

"Scottie said he'd rather be a better father and husband than a good golfer. And my question is: why are those mutually exclusive?" Brady wrote in his newsletter. "Sure, they're different blocks on the pyramid, but they're part of the same pyramid. They're connected! For instance, I think part of being a great father is being a great example of doing what it takes to take care of your family. I chose to do it by playing football."

He then argued that giving his all to his job was synonymous with being a great dad and family man.

"The hours of practice, the moments when I was laser focused -- those were times when I believe I was doing the best possible thing for my family and my kids, by prioritizing my profession and teaching, by example, what it takes to be really good at your job," he wrote.

Brady and his ex-wife, supermodel Giselle Bündchen, were married for 13 years and share two children. Brady also shares a son with actress and model Bridget Moynahan.

Both Brady and Bündchen spoke candidly during their marriage about the impact his career had on the family dynamic.

In a 2021 episode of his podcast, "Let's Go," Brady, then the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, said, "My wife has held down the house for a long time now, and I think there's things that she wants to accomplish. You know, she hasn't worked as much in the last 10, 12 years, just raising our family and kind of committing to being in a life in Boston and then moving to Florida."

In 2022, Bündchen told British Vogue that Brady's "focus is on his career, mine is mostly on the kids. And I'm very grateful that he lets me take the reins when it comes to our family."

In February 2022, after two seasons with the Buccaneers, Brady announced his retirement from the NFL, then 40 days later flipped the script and unretired to return for his 23rd season in the league. At the time, Brady missed 11 days of training camp as the team gave him an excused absence to attend to personal matters.

In October 2022, during what was Brady's final NFL season, Brady and Bündchen announced their divorce.

Sports psychologist Dr. Leah Lagos told "Good Morning America" that "there's no one size fits all where every athlete has to prioritize their family over sport, or every athlete has to prioritize their sport over their family."

"But knowing which kind of prioritizations and your preferences and just being very authentic about those and harnessing those with truth becomes very powerful," she added.

"GMA" co-anchor and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan, who played for the New York Giants for 15 years, also weighed in on Brady's and Scheffler's comments, as well as the balancing act that comes with being a professional athlete.

"I don't know why it's an argument. Different things work for different people," he said Thursday. "I honestly think the sports are different. Golf, you go for a week and a lot of time they take their family. Football, you're in and out."

"I think they're both at different stages of parenting as well. I do think, regardless of how great you are at your job, you are an example to your kids. I see both arguments. Neither is wrong. Both are great," Strahan added.
