Goma in eastern Congo is hanging by a thread a year after the city fell to Rwanda-backed rebels

GOMA, Congo (AP) — One year after M23 militants stormed into Goma, the rebel group still controls the main city in easternCongoand is tightening its grip.

The scars from the fighting between the Congolese army and M23 in January 2025 remain visible, but life has gradually returned to normal: Markets are functioning and people are adapting, but there is no real economic recovery. Bank closings, followed by the shutdown of the international airport, have severely crippled economic activity, plunging thousands of households into poverty.

Rwanda-backed M23 is the most powerful of over 100 armed groups vying for a foothold in mineral-rich eastern Congo, near the border withRwanda. The conflict has created one of the world's most significant humanitarian crises, with more than 7 million people displaced, accordingto the U.N. agency for refugees.

Following a sharp escalation of fighting early last year, M23 rebels took over Goma, which remains in their hands today.

In downtown Goma, the banking district is one of the most striking symbols of the new reality, with once-bustling buildings now shuttered. ATMs are out of service, and the bank signs are off.

That leaves people almost completely dependent on mobile phone money transfer services. It is a way to survive — but an expensive one.

"Today, we pay up to 3.5% for each withdrawal," explains Grâce Omari, a resident of the Chaumage neighborhood. "These are significant sums for families who have almost no income left."

Still, at the nearby Kituku Market, the city's main trading center, crowds were visible on Monday, the traditional market day.

Local boats docked at the pier, unloading food products from the surrounding rural areas, which are quickly displayed in the stalls. Seated behind their stalls, women were selling vegetables, flour, secondhand clothing and basic necessities. But their movements are mechanical, their gazes sometimes weary. Here, activity has never ceased, but it has lost its substance.

Espérance Mushashire, 44, a mother of 12, has been selling vegetables for years. She remembers a time when she lived with dignity. But that's not the case anymore, she says — many customers only come to inquire about prices, and then leave.

"We buy at high prices, but we hardly sell anything. Customers have no money left. Our children don't even go to school anymore," Mushashire said.

In the Mugunga neighborhood on the outskirts of Goma, daily life unfolds with an almost resigned quietness.

"The situation deteriorated," said Agathe Hanghi, a local resident. "Before, I sold things, I earned money, and that allowed me to eat and get medical treatment. But now, there's no money left. All my savings are gone, and what little was left, (the M23 rebels) came and took from here at home."

Like in many families, Hanghi's children no longer go to school. Priorities have been reduced to the bare essentials: food, shelter, survival.

She added: "We don't know what to do anymore."

At the university, an economics professor teaches his students, attempting to analyze a situation that defies conventional models. Deo Bengeya describes an economy paralyzed by the absence of financial institutions.

According to him, without banks, recovery remains impossible: no credit, no investment, no safeguarding of savings. Households consume what they have, when they can, without any prospects.

"The economy of the city of Goma after its fall is in a very critical state," Bengeya told The Associated Press. "The purchasing power of the population has fallen, some residents have fled the city, wages have fallen, and unemployment has risen."

A year after Goma's fall to the rebels, the inhabitants move forward in small steps, driven by a single certainty: the obligation to continue living, even when the future seems uncertain.

Timberwolves beat the Warriors 108-83 to snap a five-game losing streak as top stars rest

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rudy Gobert had 15 points and 17 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Golden State Warriors 108-83 on Monday night in a game missing much of its usual star power.

The Warriors were playing without startersStephen Curry (knee) and Draymond Green (back), while Minnesota's Anthony Edwards was a late scratch to rest an recurring right foot injury.

Julius Randle led Minnesota with 18 points and Bones Hyland chipped in 17. Naz Reid and Donte DiVincenzo each scored 15 for the Timberwolves, who snapped a five-game losing streak, their longest skid since they lost five straight in December 2022.

Quinten Post led Golden State with 13 points. Brandin Podziemski scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Gui Santos had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, who shot a season-low 23.1% (9 for 39) on 3-pointers.

One night after the Warriors snapped Minnesota's 103-game streak of scoring at least 100 points — the third-longest in NBA history — the Timberwolves overcame a cold start from the floor and 23 turnovers.

Minnesota took control of the game with a 21-4 run to end the second quarter. Randle scored 10 points in the run, which gave the Timberwolves a 53-38 halftime lead.

The Timberwolves started out cold, making just two of their first 12 shots and missing seven of their first eight 3-pointers. That opened the door for a 13-0 Golden State run and an early 16-8 lead for the Warriors.

Hyland led a Minnesota surge with three transition layups and Reid's first 3-pointer helped the Timberwolves take a 21-20 lead after one quarter.

Warriors: Visit Utah on Wednesday.

Timberwolves: Face the Mavericks in Dallas on Wednesday.

Seven Malaysia soccer players suspended by FIFA are cleared to play pending appeal

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Seven foreign-born players for Malaysia's national soccer team have been cleared to keep competing after the Court of Arbitration for Sport temporarily halted FIFA-imposed bans while their appeal is reviewed, Malaysia's soccer federation said Tuesday.

Last September, FIFAfined the Football Association of Malaysia350,000 Swiss francs ($450,000) for fake documents filed to naturalize the seven players, who were also fined and suspended for a year. The players stemmed from Argentina, Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain but had been naturalized in an apparent breach of FIFA rules and played in a qualifying game for the 2027 Asian Cup that Malaysia won against Vietnam.

The Malaysian federation later took the case to sport's highest court based in Switzerland after FIFArejected its appeal.

The federation said in a statement Tuesday that the Court of Aribitration for Sport had approved their request for a stay of execution, allowing the seven players to continue participating in all football-related activities until a final ruling is made. The players involved are Facundo Garcés, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, João Figueiredo, Gabriel Palmero, Jon Irazabal and Héctor Hevel, all of whom have featured for the Harimau Malaya national team.

"This means that the 12-month suspension from all football activities imposed by FIFA on the seven players has been temporarily lifted," the federation said in a statement. "They are now allowed to continue their careers and participate in football-related activities until CAS makes a final ruling."

It did not say when a final ruling is expected.

Malaysian officials had claimed all seven players had a grandparent born in Malaysia, making them eligible to represent the country under FIFA rules. However,FIFA has saidits own investigators found contrasting information after they were "able to obtain the relevant original documents" from the origin countries of the players.

Iva Jovic received tips from Novak Djokovic, but those couldn't help her against Sabalenka

Iva Jovichas received playing tipsthroughout the Australian Open from Novak Djokovic. They worked very well until Tuesday, when top-seededAryna Sabalenka defeatedthe 18-year-old American 6-3, 6-0 to end her run at Melbourne Park.

"Hopefully throughout the year I can keep having more moments with him because it's been amazing," Jovic said of Djokovic, the star Serbian who has won 24 Grand Slam singles titles, 10 of them at the Australian Open.

But evenDjokoviccould not have saved Jovic against Sabalenka in the quarterfinal match.

To be fair, Jovic has been doing just fine on her own, rising quickly in the WTA rankings.

She finished 2024 ranked just inside the top 200. Predicted rankings published Tuesday by the WTA showed her climbing to No. 20 — her highest spot.

Jovic had a chance against Sabalenka in the first set. Sabalenka took a 3-0 lead, but Jovic stayed in the set and had three breakpoint chances in the ninth game trailing 5-3. She lost 6-3 and lost her momentum, losing the second set 6-0.

Jovic referred to a comment that she attributed toAndre Agassispeaking about Djokovic, noting his ability to change styles and keep opponents off balance.

She said Agassi compared Djokovic with "a boxer and the way that he's going in for punches and then faking them out a little bit. I think the way (Djokovic) approaches the match is very impressive."

Jovic is the California-born daughter of a Serbian father and Croatian mother who immigrated to the United States.

It was Jovic's first appearance in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, but she seemed poised from the start.

"I think that I kind of went into the match obviously not knowing too much about how it was going to look like in person, having not really hit with her in the past," Jovic said. "Our first meeting as well."

"I kind of tried to just bring that middle ground, and I think I have to be able to adapt to the game and what's necessary for different play styles. I wasn't able to do that" against Sabalenka.

Jovic revealed her conversations with Djokovic earlier in the tournament. Djokovic confirmed he gave the young American some feedback, saying he was happy to help a player with Serbian heritage.

The 38-year-old Djokovic has stayed in touch.

"Yes, he did text me with some more tips throughout the rounds. I don't even know what day it is anymore!" Jovic said. "So we've been in communication, and I feel like we've built a little bit of a relationship now, which is amazing, and I wish him all the best for the rest of the tournament."

She plans to have more opportunities of her own at Grand Slams in the future.

'It's the quarterfinals but, you know, ultimately I hope to be in many quarterfinals," she said. "So I don't think this win or loss today is going to make or break my career."

A lawsuit alleging thatMarilyn Mansonsexually assaulted a former assistant and which was dismissed last month has been revived.

L.A. Superior Court Judge Steve Cochran granted a motion to reconsider the lawsuit Ashley Walters had brought against Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, Monday in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom.

While the case was dismissed last month by Cochran himself, the judge now cited a California law enacted this month, Assembly Bill 250, which allows more time for alleged victims to file claims.

Walters had originally filed her lawsuit in 2021. She alleged that she met Warner through social media when he reached out. She said she then went to his home for a potential collaboration that he pitched and was pushed onto his bed, as he attempted to put her hand in his underwear, according toRolling Stone. Walters said she left, but later agreed to be Warner's assistant and was subjected to additional abuse.

Warner has denied the allegations against him. His attorney, Howard King, reiterated Warner's denial in a statement toEntertainment Weeklyafter the latest legal development.

"Ashley Walters has been given the right to pursue a narrow claim of sexual assault under the newly enacted law, a claim that will not survive the next motion for summary judgment," King said. "While Ms. Walters made several now-irrelevant claims about so-called workplace harassment, she has no pending claims for sexual assault as defined in the penal code, as would be required under the new law, nor is she permitted under the ruling to add new claims."

He continued, "The undeniable fact is that Mr. Warner never committed any sexual assault which undoubtedly is the reason the District Attorney declined Ms. Walter's request that Mr. Warner be criminally charged."

In January 2025, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced that, following a four-year investigation, it wouldnot bring criminal chargesagainst the "Beautiful People" singer.

"We recognize and applaud the courage and resilience of the women who came forward to make reports and share their experiences, and we thank them for their cooperation and patience with the investigation," officials said at the time. "While we are unable to bring charges in this matter, we recognize that the strong advocacy of the women involved has helped bring greater awareness to the challenges faced by survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault."

Warner has also faced allegations of sexual assault and abuse from women, including actresses Esmé Bianco and former fiancée Evan Rachel Wood, which he has also denied.

Walters' lawyer Bina Ahmad gave a statement toDeadline: "We are thrilled for Ms. Walters. She has never given up fighting for justice."

Ahmad added, "She has had to overcome a lot of obstacles, as so many survivors are forced to do. Mr. Warner has tried time and again to avoid accountability for his abuse against Ms. Walters. But now, thanks to AB 250, abusers like Mr. Warner can no longer hide behind the statute of limitations."

Streamer IShowSpeed samples food and learns traditional dances in African tour

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The American streamer and YouTuber IShowSpeed is in the final leg of a 28-day tour of Africa aimed at showcasing the continent's cultural diversity, which is often overshadowed by images of poverty and violence.

"I've done so many incredible things in my life," he said during a stop in Botswana. "But this trip is different. It opened my eyes. Africa is not what I thought."

The tour of 19 countries across southern, eastern and North Africa began in Angola in late December. He attended the Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco on Jan. 18, then visited Senegal, celebrating thenational soccer team's victorywith fans, and Nigeria, where he passed 50 million YouTube subscribers and marked his 21st birthday. On Monday, he visited Ghana, trying jollof rice, meeting a traditional ruler and receiving a massage at the shea butter museum.

"I am back home, there ain't no better feeling," the content creator, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., said upon arriving in Ghana, revealing that his ancestry traces to the West African country. He is expected to arrive Tuesday in Namibia, likely the tour's final stop.

For his "Speed Does Africa" series, Watkins streamed live on YouTube. In videos lasting up to nine hours, he sampled local dishes, learned traditional dances and challenged athletes, often shouting in excitement. Large crowds of his followers swarmed him at many of his destinations.

Changing perceptions of Africa

Since the tour began, dozens of African American internet users have expressed support in widely shared videos.

Pape Seye, a 40-year-old resident of Dakar, Senegal, highlighted Watkins' visit to theHouse of Slaveson Gorée Island, a symbol of the Atlantic slave trade that sent millions of Africans into bondage. "Americans, especially Black Americans, need to know that our histories are tied, that many of our ancestors might have been deported from Gorée," he said.

Some critics have been more skeptical. Beninese influencer Nelly Mbaa, known online as Afro Chronik, said Watkins embodies a Western expectation that young Black men be valued for spectacle rather than intellect. She said he is followed not for subtle humor but for performing "an absurd, exaggerated and grotesque character."

"If he were to abandon this persona — the constant grimacing, shouting and controversial remarks — his audience would likely disappear," Mbaa said.

IShowSpeed has more than 50 million YouTube subscribers, 45 million Instagram followers and 47 million on TikTok. He has built his brand on loud, exaggerated and sometimes aggressive reactions that became his online persona but also sparked controversy. In 2022, he was banned from professional online gaming competitions after a sexist outburst against a female player and briefly suspended from YouTube for showing sexual content in avideo game.
