OT Layton von Brandt set official visit date with Florida football

Floridafootball was included on a list of four official visits set for four-star offensive tackle Layton von Brandt, who announced his itinerary on Sunday.

The 6-foot-6.5-inch, 281-pound lineman out of Middletown (Delaware) Appoquinimink in the 2027 cycle named the Gators, along with theNotre Dame Fighting Irish,Penn State Nittany LionsandAuburn Tigersas his OV destinations this summer. He is expected to be in Gainesville from May 28-30 to kick off the schedule.

Von Brandt will then travel for a midweek visit with the Nittany Lions from June 2-4, followed by weekend visits with the Tigers from June 12-14, and the Fighting Irish from June 19-21 to wrap things up. He aims to make his commitment decision sometime around July 1.

The First State product's connection to the Orange and Blue stems from his relationship with offensive line coach Phil Trautwein, who recruited him and earned his commitment at Penn State — a school he decommitted from last October. Von Brandt's first visit to the Swamp back on March 24 came with high expectations that the Gators appear to have fulfilled.

“Florida is a great school with great coaches,"von Brandt told Gators Online. “They already have a great culture. There is just nothing bad to say about Florida.”

Von Brandt was also impressed by Florida's player development resources.

“The developmental aspect at Florida with Coach Traut is still a huge factor for me. Now that I’ve visited, I know I like the culture that Coach (Jon) Sumrall is building. I also like the scheme Coach (Buster) Faulkner runs offensively," he noted.

"Florida is really laid out as a place that has everything there to help you be a pro," von Brandt continued. "Their weight room is awesome. I talked to their nutritionist and had a great conversation. They can offer success with life after football. I think about the degree that you can get from a top-five public school from Florida. There’s a lot of pro-ready stuff at Florida.”

The rising high school senior also appreciated Sumrall's authenticity toward him and his family.

"The way he spoke with me and my family, the way he interacted with the players and the type of guy he is, it's a guy you want to play for,"von Brandt told Swamp247. "It was awesome."

Von Brandt recently listed Florida among his top four schools. "They're definitely one of my top schools right now," he said.

Von Brandt is ranked No. 64 overall and No. 5 at his position nationally according to the247Sports composite,while theRivals industry rankinghas him at Nos. 75 and 5, respectively. He has 22 total offers, including five other SEC schools, along with theFlorida State Seminoles.

Notre Dame currently leads the race for the offensive tackle's talents, having earned a crystal ball prediction from 247Sports while holding an 89.5% chance of signing him according to Rivals. Other schools in the mix on Rivals' list are Penn State (5.5%), Auburn (1.3%) and Florida (1.1%).

Associated Press global investigation into government surveillance efforts wins Pulitzer Prize

NEW YORK (AP) — The expansion of government surveillance efforts in China — and the role that U.S. tech firms played in it — was the foundation ofinvestigative stories from The Associated Pressthatwon a Pulitzer Prize Mondayfor international reporting.

The Pulitzer board recognized AP journalists Dake Kang, Garance Burke, Byron Tau and Aniruddha Ghosal, along with contributor and independent journalist Yael Grauer, for what it called “an astonishing global investigation into state-of-the-art tools of mass surveillance” that also included a story about the expansion of license plate surveillance of drivers in United States by the U.S. Border Patrol.

AP Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace said “this complex and difficult reporting, done by journalists across several continents, embodies the true spirit of the AP: leveraging our global footprint and deep expertise to tell important, impactful stories. It comes at a critical time when the immense and growing power of U.S. tech companies — and their increasingly complex relationship with governments — is in the spotlight and of immense public interest.”

The AP's investigationspanned three years, thousands of pages of documents and numerous interviews. It found that the foundations of the system used by the Chinese government to monitor and police its citizens over recent decades was laid down with the help of American companies. Some of the companies went so far as to use their tech's surveillance capabilities as a selling point.

“This was sweeping and deeply impactful reporting, the kind of work that highlights the unique strengths of AP’s global, multiformat newsroom,” Pace said in an email to staffers. She is among the Pulitzer Board’snew members.

Other stories included a look at how across presidential administrations, the U.S. government allowed tech companies and China to skirt regulations intended to bar that country from access to certain materials like advanced computer chips.

A piece looking at surveillance in the United States found that the Border Patrol was secretively using an intelligence program that used license plate information to track drivers' travel patterns, and not just for border crossings. Drivers whose patterns were deemed suspicious by an algorithm could then find themselves stopped and even arrested.

The AP highlighted the difficulty of undertaking the project, and said in its statement that journalists dealt with harassment and off-the-record pushes to keep the project from publishing.

The visually compelling project included multiple photographic and video elements, with notable contributions from AP photographer David Goldman and visual journalists Marshall Ritzel and Serginho Roosblad.

Other contributors included Michael Biesecker and Sam Mednick on a story that focused on how U.S. tech giants quietly empowered Israel to track and kill many more alleged militants more quickly in Gaza and Lebanon through a sharp spike inartificial intelligenceand computing services.

Investors complete purchase of JW Marriott Marco Island Resort

The $835 million sale of the iconicJW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resortis complete.

Still operated by Marriott International, the resort on Marco Island's famous crescent beach is now owned by a joint venture betweenSculptor Real Estate Income StrategyandTrinity Investments. They bought the hotel from insurance companyMassMutual's $481 billion asset management armBarings LLC, which owned the property for more than 40 years.One of the few JW Marriott properties located directly on the beach, Marco Island's resort opened Dec. 18, 1971, as a Marco Beach Hotel and Villas. Built by theMackle brothersand their Deltona Corporation development company, the property was sold to Marriott in 1979. It was sold to MassMutual more than 40 years ago.

“The JW Marriott Marco Island is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic resorts in the United States,” said Sean Hehir, Managing Partner, President and CEO of Trinity Investments, in apress releaseissued Monday, May 4.

Hotel will remain operated as a JW Marriott

"The resort will continue to operate under the JW Marriott brand, maintaining its place within Marriott International’s global portfolio while entering a new phase of planned investment and enhancement," JW Marriott Marco Island Resort spokesperson Lorin Augeri wrote in a press release.

Situated on more than 26 acres along Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast with a quarter mile of private beachfront, the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort has 809 guestrooms and suites, meeting and event space, multiple dining and entertainment venues and access to more than 400 acres of golf and resort amenities.

Who are the companies that bought the Marco Island resort?

Sculptor and Trinity purchased not only the hotel resort on Marco Island but also its two 18-hole golf courses – Hammock Bay and Rookery in Naples. Trinity Investments has made other commitments in Florida properties including The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Grande Lakes Orlando Resort, and EAST Miami. The deal was officially made with Marco Hotel LLC and HB Naples Golf Owner LLC.

The investment companies have big plans for improvements at the resort.

Sculptor Diversified, which focuses on "differentiated, stabilized, income-producing real estate," and Trinity, a global hospitality-focused investment firm, plan renovations, mostly in year two of ownership, Sculptor said in a Feb. 27 SEC filing.

"The renovations will focus on upgrading the property’s amenities (including upgrades to the spa, pool and golf courses) and renovating the guest rooms," according to the filing.

"Planned investments will focus on elevating the guest experience across accommodations, culinary programming, and shared spaces, while preserving the character and natural setting that define the resort," according to the JW Marriott Marco Island's press release.

The resort's last major renovations – $32 million worth – came in 2015 before rebrandingas a JW Marriott. The brand operates more than 100 hotels globally, with select, dedicated luxury beach resorts in key destinations including Marco Island, Los Cabos (Mexico), and Phuket (Thailand). These properties focus on direct beach access and high-end amenities.

At that time,the hotel expandedits restaurant options to 12 restaurants and dining venues, remodeled and built a new tower with 94 adults-only suites and an adults-only bar, along with a gaming and bowling alley open to all guests and the public. The property currently has three towers – the Palms Tower (built in 1972 and renovated in 2016), the Islands Tower (built in 1982 and renovated in 2016) and the Lanai Tower (built in 2019).

“Our resort has long been a place where guests return year after year for the world class service and sense of place that define this property,” said Sharon Lockwood, General Manager at the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort. “While ownership has evolved, what remains unchanged is our commitment to delivering exceptional experiences for our guests, group partners, and local community."

Global real estate services investment company arranged deal and financing

JLL, a global commercial real estate services and investment management company with annual revenue of $26.1 billion, arranged the sale and $690 million in financing for Sculptor and Trinity.

JLL’s Hotels & Hospitality Grouprepresented the seller, Barings, in the transaction, the company said in a press release. JLL also worked on behalf of the borrowers to secure a five-year, floating-rate loan through Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase & Co., which is securitized in a stand-alone Commercial Mortgage-Backed Security (CMBS) offering. A CMBS is a fixed-rate, non-recourse loan secured by a first-position mortgage on income-producing commercial properties such as the JW Marriott Marco Island Resort.

"Luxury beachfront resorts of this caliber remain among the most sought-after assets in the hospitality sector," said JLL Americas Chief Executive Officer Kevin Davis, "particularly properties like the JW Marriott Marco Island that combine scale, irreplaceable coastal positioning, championship golf amenities and recurring membership income − attributes that generate stable cash flows and provide insulation against market volatility while offering meaningful upside potential."

MassMutual had good things to say about its successor.

“The JW Marriott Marco Island is a high‑quality investment that has delivered long‑term value for our policyowners while serving as a pillar of the Marco Island community,” said Eric Partlan, MassMutual Chief Investment Officer. “Since acquiring the resort more than four decades ago, we have worked with our global asset manager, Barings, to ensure the property’s standing as a premier destination, and believe Sculptor Real Estate and Trinity are well positioned to continue as stewards of this iconic property and members of the Marco Island community.”

The deal isexpected to add significantly to Marco Island's tax rolls.

The sale price is a lot more than the property's current assessed value of $177 million and $64 million ($244 million total) for the two parcels, said Marco Island Interim City Manager Casey Lucius. Now that the deal has closed, the properties will be reappraised.

"Currently the JW Marriott pays approximately $305,000 in taxes to the City of Marco Island," Lucius said in an interview in March. "This will increase substantially once the property is reappraised under new ownership."

Lucius estimated the JW Marriott's taxes to the city will be about $1 million total after a reappraisal.

This week,Hailey Biebershared a new photo of her son,Jack Blues Bieber, during their recentplaytime together. In the picture, Jack is sitting on the asphalt in what looks like a driveway, looking up at two adults who appear to be posed on a golf cart. On the ground, the toddler’s name is written in big bubble letters.

Jack is modeling some adorable activity style. He has on a white and red striped T-shirt with a blue collar and a pair of blue pants. On his head, he has a beige baseball cap with a brown corduroy brim.

In April, while speaking toInterview, Hailey talked a bit about dressing her son.

“I find baby and kids clothes difficult,” she admitted. “A lot of it is very patterned and has a lot of little animals or figurines on it, or it’s a T-shirt that says, ‘I love my mommy.’ There’s nothing wrong with any of that, but I like dressing him more on the simple side. I like putting him in big baggy sweats or jeans and a white T-shirt or a little hoodie. Justin’s team has made him tons of custom Skylrk [Justin Bieber’s fashion brand] stuff, which is so cute. My vibe with him is cozy and yummy and cute and simple.”

She also talked a bit more about being a mom and what her favorite part of the experience is.

“Just seeing this little human evolve before your eyes,” Hailey shared. “They grow so fast and they change so much and there’s always so much excitement. You’re watching them experience life for the first time, so you kind of feel like you’re experiencing it that way with them.”

As for having more kids, she and Justin are not sure when that will be.

“I definitely want more than one, but I’m taking it one at a time,” she said. “Some days I want two. Some days I want five.”

Karlyn Pickenswas selected No. 1 overall by the Carolina Blaze in the 2026 AUSL Draft on May 4, making her the second No. 1 overall draft pick inTennessee softballhistory.

The two-time SEC Pitcher of the Yearreceived one of 17 AUSL golden ticketshanded out this spring, and Pickens, who's from Weaverville, North Carolina, will head back to her home state to begin her pro career.

Pickens joins Lindsay Schutzler as the only No. 1 picks in program history. Schutzler was drafted No. 1 overall by the Chicago Bandits in the 2007 National Pro Fastpitch Draft.

Pickens is one of thegreatest pitchers to suit up for the Lady Vols.She holds the record for the two fastest softball pitches ever thrown, first breaking the 77 mph record held by Tennessee legend Monica Abbott in with a78.2 mph pitch against Arkansason March 24, 2025.

Then Pickensbroke her own record with a 79.4 mph pitchduring the NCAA super regionals against Nebraska on May 24. The 79.4 mph pitch is equivalent to a 111.7 mph pitch in MLB, according to the AUSL.

The 6-foot-1 flamethrower is a two-time first-team All-American with 784 career strikeouts and four no-hitters. Pickens has been an All-SEC selection every year of her career, including two first team nods the last two seasons. Her senior season was hampered by an arm strain in March, but she still has a 1.44 ERA with a 13-7 record with two shutouts and five saves in 112 innings pitched.

Pickens has thrown 154 strikeouts, only allowed 49 hits, 49 walks and has held opposing hitters to a .126 batting average. She leads the nation in hits allowed per seven innings (3.06), ranks No. 8 in ERA, No. 6 in saves and No. 11 in strikeouts per seven innings (9.6).

As a junior, Pickens had a 1.17 ERA, 306 strikeouts in 226⅔ innings and seven shutouts as she led Tennessee to the Women's College World Series semifinals. The Lady Vols also made an appearance in the WCWS semifinals in 2023 when Pickens was the SEC Freshman of the Year.

Pickens was the first athlete to be signed to an NIL partnership with AUSL in February.

The Blaze play in Durham, North Carolina, at Smith Family Stadium, which is the home of Duke softball. Dana Sorensen is the Carolina Blaze general manager and Kara Dill is the head coach.

Former Lady Vols Aubrey Leach and Payton Gottshall both play in the AUSL. Leach has played for Athletes Unlimited since 2020, and Gottshall was drafted in 2024. Leach plays for the Carolina Blaze and Gottshall plays for the Portland Cascade.

Eagles' 53-man roster projection following the rookie minicamp

ThePhiladelphia Eagleshave begun week three of their nine-week offseason workout program, and they'll be joined byeight NFL draft picksand about 10 undrafted free agents after the record-setting weekend. Philadelphia talked about swinging the pendulum towards the offense, and the Eagles finished Saturday with five offensive players,with their first five picks going to offensive players who'll play key roles in the future. Of the five, onlyMakai LemonandEli Stowersappear set for Day 1 roles. Markel Bell, Micah Morris, and others may not seed the field until 2027 at the earliest. On defense, the Eagles added Texas Tech safety Cole Wisniewski and New Mexico pass rusher Keyshawn James-Newby, with an intriguing International Pathway Program participant, Uar Bernard, sandwiched in between.

With the rookie minicamp and OTAs fast approaching, here is our first attempt at predicting the 53-man roster for the 2026 regular season.

A key trade acquisition, the hard-running Bigsby participated in 16 contests (one start) with the Eagles, recording 356 rushing yards on 63 carries (5.7 avg.) and 2 touchdowns. Will Shipley will try to regain his momentum, while the Eagles added former Texans running back Dameon Pierce for more competition.

DeVonta Smith (1,008) and A.J. Brown (1,003) are the only Eagles WR duo to produce 1,000+ receiving yards each in the same season, but the duo will be split up at some point after June 1. Looking to add more to the offense, the Eagles traded up to secure Makai Lemon. The explosive Hollywood Brown had 49 catches for 587 yards and 5 TDs last season. Darius Cooper is the player most impacted by Brown joining the roster. At the same time, Johnny Wilson will look to regain his training camp form from 2025, before he suffered a significant knee injury. This depth chart could drastically change around June 1. The addition of Dontayvion Wicks via trade makes things even more interesting.

The Eagles' offensive line suffered multiple injuries in 2025 but will look to rebound under the new offensive line coach. The Eagles have hired Chris Kuper as offensive line coach.The Vikings didn't retain Kuperafter four years in the same position. During Kuper's tenure, Minnesota ranked 32nd in pressure rate allowed on the interior in three of the last four seasons, including 2025, a ranking that led to his dismissal. Landon Dickerson was excellent in 2024 but finished the 2025 regular season with a 60.3 PFF pass-blocking grade, which ranked only 51st among 81 qualifying guards. Jordan Mailata didn't replicate his elite 2024 campaign, but he was still Philadelphia's best offensive lineman. His 83.8 PFF overall grade ranked seventh among all offensive tackles. Lane Johnson, 35, is a future Hall of Famer with a resume that includes six Pro Bowls, two first-team All-Pro nods, and a pair of Super Bowl wins. Johnson's value is clear: the Eagles were 8-2 with him in the lineup this season,versus 3-4 without him. During his tenure in Philadelphia, the team's record is 94-41-1 when he plays and 15-27 when he doesn't.

Philadelphia has an elite trio with Carter, Jordan Davis, and Moro Ojomo, with Byron Young and Ty Robinson as capable backups. Despite two badly injured shoulders, Carter was the Eagles' lone Pro Bowl starter. In 12 games this season, he had 33 tackles, 41 QB pressures, 11 quarterback hits, and three sacks. Ojomo's 71.0 PFF grade was the 80th best in the NFL last season, but he's much improved, and Ojomo saw his snap count increase to 60 percent in his third year. He started nine games for the Eagles this season and played in all 17, finishing second on the team in sacks.

Ojomo will enter the final year of his deal with a $3,624,446 cap hit. Jordan Davis just signed a three-year, $78 million deal.

Ebiketie joins Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka as athletic, hybrid pass rushers who can get after the opposing quarterbacks. The Eagles could still add Brandon Graham to this group. A solid run defender and explosive pass rusher, Smith missed seven games in 2025, logging 31 tackles, 3 sacks, one forced fumble, 33 QB pressures, 24 QB hurries, and a 67.7 PFF grade in 12 games. The 5th-year option, as it currently stands, is $14 million for 2027. Hunt became the first Eagle to lead the team in both sacks (6.5) and INTs (3) in the same season. He is the second Eagle to have 6.0+ sacks and 3.0+ INTs in a season, joining Seth Joyner (1991-92). Tryon-Shoyinka earned a 72.2 overall PFF defensive grade, and a pass-rush grade of 67.6, with a run-defense grade of 66.2. Tryon-Shoyinka generated 8 total pressures, 0 sacks, 6 hurries, and 2 QB hits. Against the run, he recorded 10 solo tackles. Tryon-Shoyinka has never produced more than 5.0 sacks in a single season and logged only 2.0 in 2024. The former Washington first-round pick only played 142 snaps in 2025.

Last spring, the Eagles traded up a spot in the draft to pick Jihaad Campbell, whose playing time slowed when Dean returned to the lineup. Dean has departed, and Campbell will miss the off-season due to shoulder surgery. Linebacker depth is one of the strengths for the Eagles, and they'll have Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Smael Mondon Jr. looking for breakout moments. Chance Campbell is on the roster, and the Eagles just added former Ravens linebacker Chandler Martin on a two-year deal.

After losing Jaelan Phillips, Reed Blankenship, and Nakobe Dean, the strength of this defense will be at cornerback. Philadelphia has gone from uncertainty at the position to being absolutely loaded afterlanding Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolenon a one-year deal worth up to $15 million. The move allows Cooper DeJean to remain a versatile weapon. At the same time, Michael Carter II could transition to safety, which allows the Birds to keep Jakorian Bennett and Kelee Ringo in reserve roles.

The Eagles' revamped defense will give some of the top passing offenses a run for their money, matching up with outside pass catchers and in the slot. Woolen possesses unmatched measurables for a cornerback as he's tall, athletic, physical, fast, and has top-flight ball skills. Even more impressive, he produced the second-highest lockdown percentage (65%) in the NFL this past season.According to NBC Sports Philadelphiaand Sharp Football, the Eagles used man coverage on 24.5% of their snaps last season. That ranked 12th in the NFL, whereas theSeahawks' man usage (15.2%) ranked 27th.

The Eagles traded Sydney Brown to Atlanta and quickly re-signed Marcus Epps and added J.T. Gray. Mukuba is a guaranteed starter in Year 2, despite returning from a season-ending injury as a rookie. The second safety spot is up for grabs after Reed Blankenship's departure. Epps is a solid contributor, but he's aging and not a dominant game-changer. Gray is a special teams standout, while Sam and Johnson are back after spending 2025 on the practice squad.

Mann signed a four-year contract to return to the Eagles, bringing back one of the best punters in the NFL. Elliott reworked his contract, and the team guaranteed his 2026 salary, but he could see competition. The Eagles signed an undrafted free agent long snapper, Rocco Underwood, out of Florida.

The Philadelphia Eagles have begun week three of their nine-week offseason workout program, and they'll be joined byeight NFL draft picksand about 10 undrafted free agents after the record-setting weekend. Philadelphia talked about swinging the pendulum towards the offense, and the Eagles finished Saturday with five offensive players,with their first five picks going to offensive players who'll play key roles in the future. Of the five, onlyMakai LemonandEli Stowersappear set for Day 1 roles. Markel Bell, Micah Morris, and others may not seed the field until 2027 at the earliest. On defense, the Eagles added Texas Tech safety Cole Wisniewski and New Mexico pass rusher Keyshawn James-Newby, with an intriguing International Pathway Program participant, Uar Bernard, sandwiched in between.

Dallas Goedert is back on a one-year deal. Goedert started 15 games, catching 60 passes for 591 yards and a career-high and Eagles franchise high 11 touchdown catches. Philadelphia drafted his successor, landing Eli Stowers in the second round. A Former college teammate of Jalen Hurts at Oklahoma, eaching the end of his rookie contract. Calcaterra played in 62 games with 22 starts. Mundt will play the third tight end, run-blocking role. Cameron Latu will assume the role of fullback. In a reduced role behind Mason Taylor, Smartt caught seven of nine targets for 52 yards while appearing in 15 games for the Jets in the 2025 season.

Smartt played mostly on special teams and drew at least one target in only three of his 15 appearances for the Jets. He spent the previous three seasons with the Chargers and has just one touchdown catch in 53 regular-season NFL games.

Ashwaubenon track and field standout Lera Black waslast week’s winner, making it two straight weeks a Jaguars athlete won the poll after softball pitcher Grace Aichele took home the honor in Week 34.

Black received 6,301 votes, ahead of Green Bay Preble soccer player Kate Reckinger (2,551 votes) and Seymour softball player Kendra Rettler (2,091 votes).

Noah Chervenka, Luxemburg-Casco baseball

Put together an impressive performance on the mound and at the plate in a 2-1 victory at Wrightstown.

The sophomore right-hander allowed two hits, two walks and no earned runs while striking out seven in a complete game win.

He also went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Chervenka went 2-for-3 with two runs and a triple in a 14-5 win over Clintonville to end the week.

He leads the Spartans with a 1.12 earned-run average and is tied with Gavin Lax with a team-high two wins.

Richie Flanigan, Green Bay Notre Dame boys track and field

The junior will play footballat the University of Notre Dame, but nobody should overlook his talent in track and field.

Flanigan helped lead the Tritons to the team title at theAl VandenbergInvitational, winning the shot put with a throw of 54 feet, 8.75 inches and the discus with a throw of 177.

Flanigan placed fourth in the shot put at the WIAA Division 2 state meet last year and eighth in the discus.

Brady Hayward, Pulaski boys golf

The senior earned medalist honors at a Fox River Classic Conference meet at Mid Vallee, shooting a 35. It was two strokes better than Bay Port’s Wil Therriault, Notre Dame’s Jack O’Brien and De Pere’s Grant Lawton.

Hayward finished tied for 17th at the D1 state meet last season, the highest finish of any local player.

Bailey Krouth, Marinette girls track and field

The junior was one of the stars at a North Eastern Conference quad, winning the 100-meter dash in 12.91 seconds and the 200 in 27.37.

Harrison Selk, Green Bay Preble baseball

The junior outfielder had a big week at the plate to help the Hornets go 3-0.

Selk was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI in a 3-2 win over Notre Dame.

He went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, two runs scored, a stolen base and a walk in a 16-0 victory over Green Bay Southwest and followed by going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a stolen base, RBI and a walk in a 12-0 win over Gladstone (Michigan).

Selk is hitting .370 with a .485 on-base percentage and a .966 OPS this season. He leads Preble with nine runs scored and three doubles.
