President Trump's nominee to run the country's top auto safety agency may bring more scrutiny to technologies like autonomous driving and robotaxis, putting pressure on companies like Tesla (TSLA) and Alphabet's (GOOG) Waymo. This comes in contrast to expectations that the administration would ease federal autonomous regulations.

Trump's nominee for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) administrator, Jonathan Morrison, previously worked as an attorney at NHTSA and testified before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation on Wednesday as part of the nomination process.

"The state of technology has moved forward now [since prior NHTSA stint], and we need to start working on ways to build public trust," Morrison said when asked about regulating tech like autonomous driving.

Morrison added that there was a "lack of federal leadership in the space," and regulations that could emerge too late in the game would have a "chilling effect" on companies looking to innovate in the space.

Morrison added that he "absolutely" believed federal standards were needed when asked by Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican.

In his prepared remarks, Morrison previewed an even more aggressive approach.

"NHTSA cannot sit back and wait for problems to arise with such developing technologies, but must demonstrate strong leadership," Morrison said in his prepared testimony.

"The technical and policy challenges surrounding these new technologies must be addressed … Failure to do so will result in products that the public will not accept and the agency will not tolerate," Morrison added. Reuters was the first to report on Morrison's prepared testimony.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk's once-close relationship with President Trump indicated to investors and analysts that the federal government would take a gentle stance toward the company's autonomous and robotaxi rollout.

Tesla has expanded its robotaxi testing in Austin, and Musk said the company would expand testing to the San Francisco Bay Area, but reports suggest those applications for those state permits have not been submitted.

Currently, NHTSA is investigating certain issues where Tesla robotaxis violated local traffic laws in Austin, and regulators added that its investigation into Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD)-Supervised/Beta software remains open.

It isn't just Tesla that would be affected by more NHTSA scrutiny. Waymo, the leader in the space, has been expanding robotaxi deployments in the US, and Uber (UBER) is as well with its technology partners.

Tesla, for its part, has not revealed its next steps or when the general public will be allowed to summon a robotaxi in Austin. Musk has said he expects "millions" of robotaxis to be driving around by the second half of 2026, but the CEO has a history of making highly speculative predictions that have not come to fruition.

A more vigilant NHTSA may hamper Tesla's efforts to roll out FSD and robotaxi services, though the pursuit of national standards may actually help Tesla navigate the various state and local regulations that may be preempted if NHTSA puts forth federal guidelines.

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Bank of America is working on launching a stablecoin, and investors can expect the lender to move forward with the cryptocurrency, CEO Brian Moynihan said on Wednesday, without giving a timeline.

Stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value, are usually pegged to a fiat currency such as the U.S. dollar and are commonly used by crypto traders to move funds between tokens.

"We feel both the industry and ourselves will have responses. We've done a lot of work," the CEO of the second-largest U.S. bank said.

"We are still trying to figure out how big or small it is, because in some places there are not big amounts of money movement. So you would expect us all to move, our company to move on that," Moynihan told analysts on a post-earnings conference call.

Moynihan said Bank of America was trying to understand client demand, which was not high at this point, and would roll out a stablecoin at an appropriate time, likely in partnership with other players.

U.S. President Donald Trump has promised to be the "crypto president," popularizing its mainstream use in the country.

A series of crypto industry-friendly bills is expected to progress through Congress this week, paving the way for digital assets to potentially further integrate into traditional finance.

One of the most notable is a bill that would establish a regulatory framework for stablecoins and is likely to advance to Trump's desk for approval.

The banks are still awaiting legal clarity, Moynihan said, explaining why progress has been slower than some investors anticipated.

Morgan Stanley Chief Financial Officer Sharon Yeshaya said on Wednesday the bank was following stablecoin developments closely.

"We're looking both at the landscape, the uses, and the potential uses for our own client base. But, it really is a little early to tell, especially for the businesses we run versus businesses that you might see from competitors, on how a stablecoin would play in," she added.

Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser also said the bank may issue a stablecoin to facilitate digital payments.

"We are looking at the issuance of a Citi stablecoin," she told analysts after reporting earnings on Tuesday. "This is a good opportunity for us."

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who has been a vocal skeptic of bitcoin, said on Tuesday the bank will be involved in stablecoins, without giving details.

House of the Dragon's Alcock, 25, will star as Kara Zor-El, cousin of Kal-El/Clark Kent (David Corenswet), after making a brief cameo at the end of Superman.

Gunn explained in a recent interview with ScreenRant that, putting it simply, "she's a total mess."

"I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background," Gunn said. "He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she's ended up different than her cousin."

A fire at the festival site of the Tomorrowland electronic music festival, Wednesday 16 July 2025, in Boom. The first weekend of the festival takes place at the 'De Schorre' terrain in Boom, from July 18 to 20.

First responders were battling a massive fire that broke out at Tomorrowland's main stage in Belgium, according to photos from the scene and local media.

The blaze broke out just days before the Belgian music festival, which draws tens of thousands each year, was set to kick off on Friday, July 18 in the city of Boom.

Emergency services were on the scene, attempting to prevent further spread of the fire, local outlet GVA reported Wednesday, July 16.

Video footage circulating on social media shows large flames coming from the stage and black smoke billowing into the air. Photos published by Belgium-based GVA showed the staged effectively destroyed.

It was not immediately known whether the fire would cancel or delay the festival.

TOULOUSE, France (AP) — A man protesting the participation of an Israel-based team in the Tour de France ran onto the course as the leaders raced for the finish line on Wednesday.

Norwegian rider Jonas Abrahamsen won the 11th stage in a photo finish just ahead of Swiss rider Mauro Schmid, but their final sprint was accompanied by a man running alongside who wore a T-shirt saying, "Israel out of the Tour," and who waved a keffiyeh, the black-and-white checkered headscarf that has become a potent symbol of the Palestinian cause.

A security guard ran out to apprehend the man.

The Israel-Premier Tech team is racing at this year's Tour with eight team members from other countries. The team acquired the right to enter the Tour de France in 2020 when Israel Start-Up National took over Katusha's WorldTour license and has since claimed three stage victories, though none yet in this year's race.

Team members previously faced protests because of the team's association with Israel, which has killed more than 58,000 Palestinians in 21 months of war, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The war was sparked by the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel that killed some 1,200 people on Oct. 7, 2023.

Israel and Hamas are considering a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal that could pause the war.
