“Zootopia 2 ”Speeds Past $1 Billion at Global Box Office in Record Time for a PG-Rated Film

The new animated sequel, after opening on Nov. 26, has crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office globally. Perthe Walt Disney Company, it's officially the fastest PG-rated film ever to do so.

Disney's sequel to 2016'sZootopiahad alreadybroken recordsas the fourth-highest global opening ever, the biggest global opening ever for an animated film and the biggest opening weekend for any movie globally in 2025. It broke a previous record — by another Disney animated sequel,Moana 2— for an animated film's biggest global opening weekend. As of Dec. 12, it has earned $230 million within the U.S.

Since the 2013 release ofFrozen, Disney has amassed five billion-dollar earners, includingFrozen 2,Moana 2,Zootopiaand now the latter's sequel.

Zootopia 2features the return of voice actorsGinnifer GoodwinandJason Batemanas buddy cops Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, respectively, teaming up "to crack a new case, the most perilous and intricate of their careers," per a synopsis. Joining the cast are newcomers Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, Quinta Brunson, Danny Trejo and more.

The movie also features the voices ofShakira, returning from the first film, andEd Sheeran, who together wrote original tune "Zoo," the pop song Shakira's Gazelle performs onscreen.

"Everyone at Disney Animation put their heart, soul and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination, and incredible thoughtfulness," said Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jared Bush in a statement. "This milestone means the world to us, because more than anything, it means audiences are coming to theaters for a shared experience of watching this movie on the big screen, everyone together, from all walks of life around the world — and that is aZootopiadream come true."

The Walt Disney Company's press release also indicates that interest has surged among Disney+ viewers for 2016'sZootopiaand 2022 shorts seriesZootopia+.
