"He was not great on the ball however we felt he might develop into an enormous, robust centre-half and we agreed to permit him to coach at the academy."

Unfortunately, Arsenal's academy chief Liam Brady was not impressed and advised Massey to let Muamba go.

But a cheeky request from the ace ended up saving his Arsenal profession.

Massey continued: "After I did so (letting Muamba go), I informed him that as he lived in Walthamstow I might advocate him to his nearest skilled club, Leyton Orient, my former workforce. As Fabrice didn't have access to transport for training and the video games this is able to also be an appropriate place to play soccer.

"The following day I was in my room when a knock came on the door and Fabrice poked his head round to ask once I was going to contact Orient and arrange a trial for him. Such enthusiasm and angle are just what any young participant wants.

"I requested him what he was doing the following Wednesday evening and when the answer was nothing, I advised him that before I might advocate him to Orient, I would really like him to play in another Arsenal academy recreation.

"I was in need of a centre-half for a match towards Norwich's under-14s. It was an end-of-season fixture at Highbury. We beat Norwich 5-0 and Fabrice had a superb recreation, a lot in order that I invited him to return again for pre-season training. This meant we might have one other take a look at him."
