Thompkins, who was 74 on the time, stated he moved from New York to Charlotte, North Carolina when he retired.

In 2004 he paid simply over $154,000 for a home with the Davis Lake Group Affiliation.

A number of years later he had his niece and her son and daughter come to stay with him at the residence.

He explained that he stopped paying part of his HOA dues because the affiliation didn't let him register the youngsters on the clubhouse, based on CBS affiliate WBTV.

Davis Lake Group Association began legal action towards Thompkins, based on courtroom paperwork seen by WBTV.

These papers reportedly showed the courtroom granted the HOA a lien on Thompkins's property in April 2011 for "overdue affiliation assessments."

"I didn't freak out behind the lien placed on the property because Wells Fargo has the first mortgage," Thompkins stated.

The home-owner stated he took out a reverse mortgage on the home and assumed this may shield him from foreclosure.

Although Thompkins had taken out a reverse mortgage he would still have been the legal home-owner, based on Compass Mortgage.

Thompkins stated he was unaware that withholding HOA dues might lead to a lien or foreclosures.

Davis Lake Group Affiliation had filed several documents and courtroom data showed that the home-owner didn't present as much as hearings, based on WBTV.

The HOA later required possession of the home and the deed.

The house had been foreclosed and courtroom data reportedly stated "no legitimate purpose introduced at the listening to as to why the Association shouldn't foreclose."

His house was put up for public sale and bought for $three,913,25.

Thompkins, who was battling heart illness, kidney failure, and hypertension at the time, described the experience as "traumatic."

"I did obtain a discover from them saying there was an auction and hearing of some type. I by no means saw that notice. My niece signed for it," he stated.
